RIP, Levanta
2008-05-28 05:57:00 It seemed like such a great idea. Linux is moving from edge and departmental servers to the data center, so why not offer Linux data center automation, complete with virtualization Linux lifecycle management? Well, maybe it's still a great business idea, but Levanta wasn't able to make a go of it. Officially, there's still no word that the San Mateo, Calif.-based company is out of business, but former employees say that the company laid them off on April 1. The list of those who were fired ranges from clerical support to Madhur Kohli, the company's former vice president of engineering.

2008-05-28 05:29:00 Instructions mentioned bellow in general follow up the ones in my previous post, regarding OpenSolaris 2008 /05 DomU at Xen 3.2.1 CentOS 5.1 Dom0 (64-bit). However, Xen 3.2.1 Dom0 had been built on CentOS 5.1 from the source obtained by cloning Mercurial Repository@xensource.com. Install Xen on Ubuntu 8.04 had been performed from Ubuntu Repositories and the patched as usual. More About: Linux , Desktop , Server

Linux vs. Windows: Understanding the Difficulty Divide
2008-05-28 04:31:00 Over the years, I’ve developed a generalized theory about the relative cost of getting things done in Windows versus that of Linux , and as something of a corollary, the reason a lot of people say Linux is too hard, or “not ready for the desktop.” The essence of this theory can be illustrated by a graph that I call The Difficulty Divide. You can see the graph and my theory on Works With U, a site covering Ubuntu Linux. More About: Understanding

Edit and compare giant binary files with lfhex
2008-05-27 13:32:00 Many hex editors try to copy an entire file into memory before they let you edit it, which explicitly limits the size of the files you can view or edit. lfhex is designed to allow you to edit binary files larger than can fit into your computer's memory. While you might normally not be working with binary files that are larger than your memory, it's good to know that your hex editor can scale to such large files when that situation arises. lfhex can load huge files quickly and does not require large amounts of memory to do so. For example, the documentation mentions that loading a 2GB file requires less than 2MB of RAM. More About: Linux , Edit , Compare , Giant , Files

WordPress may be winning the war, but Movable Type is getting back into the
2008-05-27 07:40:00 I've blogged a bit recently on how hard it is to install Movable Type and have it actually work on your own server. After getting and configuring Apache and MySQL (or PostgreSQL or SQlite), making sure you get the static files in the right place and the CGI/Perl files in the other right place, then making sure everything has the proper permissions ... I found it to be way beyond my capabilities. To be fair, I haven't yet tried to install WordPress, but I recently found out something very interesting: There are WordPress packages available in many of the major Linux and BSD distributions, including Debian, Ubuntu and even OpenBSD. Luckily, the same thing is now happening for Movable Type. So if you're using the Debian GNU/Linux distribution -- and I strongly suggest you do -- you can now install Movable Type as a Debian package. More About: Wordpress , Back , Winning

OpenSolaris: nice try, pity about the licence
2008-05-27 06:43:00 Why would anyone try to introduce an operating system into the existing glut unless it pays off in spades? What can a new entrant give us that the multitude of Linux distributions, the Mac OSX and old, hoary Windows hasn't? More About: Nice , Pity , Licence

RadeonHD Driver Delivers AMD 780 Support
2008-05-27 05:46:00 The AMD 780 Series Chipsets have been available for nearly four months now, and supporting the Radeon HD 3200 graphics since day one has been AMD's proprietary Catalyst driver. On the open-source side, there has been the Radeon HD 3200 / 780G support quite quickly through the xf86-video-ati driver due to its use of AtomBIOS, but the support within the RadeonHD driver hadn't arrived until earlier today. Thanks to 22 code commits made to the mainline xf86-video-radeonhd git tree, it's now possible to use this newest AMD integrated graphics processor with this Novell-spawned driver. UK ASUS Eee 900s come with stunted battery, longer warranty
2008-05-24 23:35:00 So according to El Reg, it turns out ASUS is selling its Eee 900 laptops in the UK with 4400mAh batteries -- quite a bit smaller than the 5800mAh batteries that come in the US version. It's insult to injury when you consider that the larger screen necessarily sucks down more juice than on the 700 series, but ASUS explains that overseas users get a tradeoff in exchange: UK warranties last two years, supposedly longer than their US counterparts (although to be fair, we've heard of retailers listing the US Eee's warranty at two years as well). Caveat emptor, and all that. More About: Linux , Asus , Battery , Warranty

Testing the new SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 SP2
2008-05-24 22:15:00 In Novell's new SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 SP2, announced yesterday, you'll find only small, but useful, improvements, most of them for better interoperability with Microsoft protocols and formats. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10 SP2 includes support for fully virtualized Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003. Novell claims system administrators can also migrate these Windows Server guests across physical machines in real-time. Because of the Microsoft/Novell partnership, SLES is the only third-party virtualization solution offering full Microsoft support for its Windows Server guests. In return, the Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V hypervisor, now a release candidate, also supports SLES as a virtual guest. More About: Testing , Suse

A day in the life
2008-05-24 20:27:00 You know what the difference is between a professional blogger and amateurs like us? They write about the community and we are the community. We can write about things they will never be able to cover properly: our own experiences. A view from the inside. Usually, it doesn't take too much effort to write a blog entry like this, because I love writing about what I do. More About: Linux , Life , Day In The Life

Linux Brings Open Source to the .car Era
2008-05-24 18:32:00 Wind River is joining Intel to develop an open source Linux platform to your car and shake up the auto industry by bringing greater innovation, efficiency and development speed to the emerging in-car infotainment market. It's a radical effort to force automakers -- which tend to favor evolutionary, not revolutionary, R&D - to embrace open source as a way to speed up development. If Wind River and Intel pull it off, it would be a crucial step toward spurring innovation and cooperation in the growing but fractured in-car multimedia market.
