Building a dynamic with Css sprites
2007-02-21 01:09:01
(Page 1 of 4 )CSS sprites are a powerful technique that can be used to incorporate rollover buttons, dynamic banners, and similar elements to any web page. Sprit es can also improve the overall performance of a given web site, since they minimize the number of HTTP requests made by the browser. If you're interested in learning how to make this approach work for you, then you should start reading this article right now! This is the second part of the series "Using CSS Sprite s." In three instructive tutorials, this series teaches you how to create CSS sprites in a few easy steps, and shows you how to use them in the context of real world applications. Now, stepping back to the topics that I covered in the first part of the series, you'll recall that I explained the underlying theory that surrounds the concept of CSS sprites. I also offer...

Yoople, A Search Experiment in People Power - Room
2007-02-21 01:09:01
Yoople, A Search Experiment in People Power - Room for Abuse? (Page 4 of 4 )Danny Sullivan correctly points out that any site trying to move themselves to the top of the results by brute force manipulation must have earned at least some basic ranking in Yahoo, or else there isn't anything to drag and drop. Even there, it takes a lot of work. Using a search term other than "pizza," I tried to move one particular result one place up the rankings. Moving it up one rank 13 times by performing the drag and drop and then reloading the search didn't do it - and the result I was trying to get past had only been moved six times. Hardly any of the other results on the first page had been moved at all (then again, the search was for a highly competitive term). This doesn't mean the system can't be abused, however. Another reviewer of Yoople commented that there's nothing in place to verify that the results are being moved by humans. Doing something to make visitors verify that they'...

Yoople, A Search Experiment in People Power - Moving Stuff Around (Page 3 of 4 )The results for pizza have been moved around a lot; it's very easy. If you check one of the earlier pictures you'll see that there's been a lot of jockeying for position between Papa John's, Domino's, and Pizza Hut. But since I'm rather annoyed that Pizzeria Uno didn't even turn up in the first 30 results (which I could only get to by clicking an arrow at the bottom of the page), I'm going to have a little fun.     Look at the second entry. It shows up as the twelfth item in Yahoo's results for pizza, but here I've been able to bump it up to number two! It's worth noting that it took me several moves to get it there; when I tried to move the result that was in the thirtieth position up to number two, Yoople wouldn't let me. When I performed the pizza search again after engaging in my manipulations, Little Caesars once again showed up in position 12. Incidentally, you can also m...

Natural Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - DGM
2007-02-20 01:08:01
Natural Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - By DGM UK SEO is the process of optimising a web site so that it is ranked as highly as possible in the natural listings of a search results page. Search engines send out 'spiders' to score web pages based on content; this is stored in an index. When a user conducts a search, the engine matches that term against the index and displays the listing in accordance with its score.   Relevancy: search engine algorithms are designed to prioritise natural search results based on relevance to a user search. As a result, traffic from natural listings tends to be of a higher quality.   Longevity: once a site is correctly indexed and optimised, the listings are there 'permanently'. Natural SEO therefore provides long-term exposure of your web offering. Furthermore, unlike PPC, SEO listings are not budget-dependent and therefore do not expire when budget is unavailable. Self-perpetuating: a correctly opt...

Visitor Enhanced Optimization (VEO)
2007-02-16 07:04:07
Visitor Enhanced Opti mization (VEO) Imagine creating your website without the search engines in mind. But you already do that, right? You don't name pages that are keyword rich and hyphenated to make the search engines recognize what that page is about, correct? You don't write articles about topics that search engines would reward you for by placing your site at the top of the search result pages, right? And I know that you don't choose keywords based on what sources such as WordTracker and KeyWordDiscovery tell you, true? See a pattern here? There is soo much focus on creating a site that is built to be "search engine friendly" that sometimes it's forgotten that while search engines may bring traffic, it's still a human who is reading and consuming the content that lives on your site. While this may seem obvious to a web designer or marketer, not all of us possess that level of focus when making changes to websites. Instead of trying to create original and uni...

Google TrustRank
2007-02-16 07:04:07
Google Trust Rank There has been an ever increasing awareness to the value of Google's "TrustRank" algorithm. While there are many factors that are "Off-page", there are a number of simple actions you can take to make sure your site earns the trust from Google by employing these easy techniques. The best way to think about Trustrank is to compare it to if you were to purchase a product or service in the real world. There are many built-in factors that we use to pre-qualify a business to see if we are willing to part with our cash for their goods or services. This is the same approach Google takes in order to measure the quality of a site, and doing this will get you out of the so-called "Sandbox" much faster than the typical 4-6 months. While in no particular order, some are most costly than others, but all are worth doing. Register your domain for 10 years. If you can't afford the $70 it costs at GoDaddy then are you really serious about your site?Buy a SSL certificate - t...

The DMOZ Factor
2007-02-16 07:04:07
The DMOZ Fact or There have been soo many discussions about DMOZ in both positive and negative lights on forums that if I had a penny for each one, I could put Bill Gates out of business. Point is, Google still uses DMOZ as it's back-up directory source and until that changes, it will always be important to have your site listed in it's index. Now, despite some other seo urban legends, you can get top rankings in Google without being listed in DMOZ - but it's a quality link if you can get it. So, how much time should you dedicate to getting a DMOZ link? All you need is about 15 minutes in total, and you'll be set. There are two ways you can submit your site to get listed. The harder way is to find the category your site resides in and enter your site there. The easier way is to drill down regionally to where your business location is. Then look for the category you want within that region and submit there. It may not be an exact match, but it is a DMOZ link. So how powerful is...

SEO for Digg
2007-02-16 07:04:07
SEO for Digg Add to:  Technorati | Digg | del.icio.us | Yahoo | Slashdot | BlinkList | Spurl | reddit | Furl | OnlyWire In case you haven't been on the Internet for the past year or so, there has been a tremendous amount of attention being captured by socially-powered sites such as digg. So, what does this have to with the world of Search Engine Marketing? There is something called the Digg effect, which essentially brings a ton of traffic to your site in a small amount of time. (Usually within minutes of a posting). While digg readers despise seo-planted stories, if you do have something topical or free to use or even something that's just "cool", you won't feel the wrath of the digg community, and end up with your post getting buried. So how can you leverage this site? One of the key elements of getting a story on the home page is to have either a ton of people who have "dugg" your posting, or if you happen to know some of the top...

How guys select the girl they want to marry..... A man is dating three women and wants to decide which to marry. He decides to give them a test. He gives each woman a present of $5,000 and watches to see what they do with the money. The first does a total makeover. She goes to a fancy beauty salon, gets her hair done, purchases new make-up and buys several new outfits, and dresses up very nicely for the man. She tells him that she has done this to be more attractive for him because she loves him so much. The man is impressed. The second goes shopping to buy the man gifts. She gets him a new set of STRONG golf clubs, some new gizmos for his computer, and some expensive clothes. As she presents these gifts, she tells him that she has spent all the money on him because she loves him so much.Again, the man is impressed. The third invests the money in the stock market. She earns several times the $5,000. She gives him back his $5000 and reinvests the remainder in a joint acc...

Datatypes Used in Oracle 9i

Data types Used in Oracle 9i (Page 1 of 3 )For those who use databases but are not familar to the Oracle 9i database, perhaps you should read about the datatypes used in Oracle 9i and how they can be used to support object orientation. It is assumed that you have read my previous Oracle article based on creating an Oracle database in the latest Oracle database 9i. Before we can create a table, one should sit down and take the time to get to know the datatypes available for Oracle. Also, upon reading articles relating to the Oracle database, you should have come across the term Abstract datatypes. This article will discuss abstract datatypes in depth so that creating a table, which is designed to include abstract datatypes, will inevitably become more understandable. These abstract datatypes, which I like to call user-defined types, are datatypes that behave like objects.

2007-02-15 01:01:01
Learning About the Graph Construct using Game s , Part III - Depth First Traversals (Page 5 of 6 )A traversal is like walking on the nodes of a graph. The purpose of a traversal is to visit all nodes of a graph. There are several traversal methods such as Breadth first traversal and Depth first traversal. We will concentrate on depth first traversal here, since it is simpler. Using traversals, we will be able to find paths and loops easily in the graph.A depth first traversal tries to go as deep as possible in the graph before visiting nodes near to the starting point. For example in a graph like this:If we start at node a, it will try to go as deep as possible, so a possible scenario could be. a->b->c->d->e->f->g-> ;h (a depth first traversal is clearly not unique, we could have started with the path to c)Depth first traversal is extremely easy to code. For every node, we mark it as visited and recursively call the traversal for each of the unvisited neighboring no...

Learning About the Graph Construct using Game s , Part III - Representing the Problem as a Graph (Page 3 of 6 )To solve this problem, first, we will represent the figure as a graph. Unlike the previous problem, the reduction to a graph is quite clear here. Each point will be represented as a node, and lines will be edges in the graph.Question: should the graph be directed or undirected? Answer: clearly the graph is undirected in this case. There is no specific direction for any of the lines in the figure. Remember from part 1 that, to represent an undirected graph, we actually need to put in two edges for every edge. For an edge connecting u and v, we have to put an edge going from u to v, and another one going from v to u.There are small modifications from the graph we used in the previous two parts. The classes are a little different:class node{  String data;  node2 links;  boolean equals(node t)  {    if(t.data.equals(data)) &n...

I hope this overview of partitioning will provide some answers to What? When? Who? Where ? Why and How? of partitioning in Oracle.  For detailed syntax and documentation refer to Oracle documentation. Learning About the Graph Construct using Game s , Part III - Conditions for a Solution to Exist (Page 2 of 6 )We have just defined the problem. As you may have noticed, this problem is very famous, and is repeatedly published in kids' magazines. But, did you know these paths have a name of their own? They are called Euler tours. Euler discovered a way to solve this problem a long time ago, and found the conditions for a drawing to have a solution.Let's begin at the beginning. What are the conditions for a drawing to have an Euler tour? If we answer this question, finding the tours themselves will be an extremely easy task.In fact, to know if a drawing has an Euler tour we do the following:For every point, count the number of lines coming out of this point. If every single point has an even number of lines coming out of it, then this drawing has an Euler tour.If exactly two points have an odd number of lines coming out of them, while all others have an even number of lines coming out ...

Welcome to the third and final part of this exciting series. Today, to conclude the series, we are going to handle a totally new problem, and see what we can do about it using graphs. As you remember, in the first two parts, we handled the problem of dividing the water in two jugs. Today, we are going to handle a totally different problem. This problem relates to pencils, papers, and strange drawings. The problem.Given this figure. Can you draw it without passing over any line twice, and without raising pencil from paper? Our problem today isn't really restricted to this drawing. Given any figure, can you draw it without passing over any line twice...

Part itioning in Oracle . What ? Why? When ? Who? Where? How? (Page 1 of 3 )Pavi has produced an article for Oracle DBAs interested in finding ways of partitioning the tables as well showing a new form of partitioning using Oracle 9i.Business applications are growing at a faster rate than salaries, and so is the data supporting them, especially e-business applications where the data growth has been around 20-30 percent or more annually. Oracle came up with the idea of Partitioning the Tables.  Yes ! The name sounds right "Partitioning", the literal meaning of Partitioning is "The Act of dividing something into parts" and in our case that 'something' is nothing but.?  You guessed it right! Data.
