2007-02-12 18:56:01 SQL Server 2000, XML and XSL: The Ultimate Comb ination (Page 1 of 5 )All the hype that once surrounded XML is finally starting to die down, and developers are really beginning to harness the power and flexibility of the language. In this article, Mitchell will show us how SQL Server 2000 incorporates XML support using the "FOR XML EXPLICIT" method to retrieve data from a table as a customised XML document. All the hype that once surrounded XML is finally starting to die down, and developers are really beginning to harness the power and flexibility of the language. XML is a data descriptive language that uses a set of user-defined tags to describe data in a hierarchically structured format. The release of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 saw Microsoft jump on the XML band-wagon too: they've included a number of different ways to manipulate data as well-formed XML. Firstly, there's the SQL XML support. Microsoft's implementation of SQL XML provides a simple configuration tool that allows de... More About: Mate , The U
Searchles: The Next Generation of Search?
2007-02-11 00:53:01 Searchles: The N ext Gene ra tion of Search? (Page 1 of 4 )Online companies that include user-generated content as a huge part of their business model have been around for a few years now. This model is even being used with search engines, with del.icio.us as the most prominent example. But there's a new search engine that takes that model even further, and it's definitely worth a look. It's called "Searchles," a mashup of the words "search" and "circles," and it's pronounced "circles." It's because the three-month-old search engine, an offshoot of Dumbfind, emphasizes circles of friends to make it work. "You can think of it as a cross between MySpace and a social bookmarking site like del.icio.us or Furl," explained Dumbfind spokesman Eric Young. "It's all about connecting to your friends and sharing information and making everything easily searchable."Users of Searchles take advantage of a double box system that lets them explore their topic by keyword, tag, or both. 2007-02-11 00:53:01 Searchles: The N ext Gene ra tion of Search? - The Community (Page 2 of 4 )Before actually trying out the search engine, I thought I'd poke around for a bit and see what I turned up. Groups seem to be an important part of Searchles, so I clicked on a link labeled "Groups" and was rewarded with seven pages of them, in no particular order. They were as specific as ones for heart surgeons and as random as one called "science stuff." There's a respectable number of groups related to programming, some that focus on history, and, not surprisingly, a few dedicated to searching and to Web 2.0. I found a few that looked like the kinds of groups I might want to join, so I clicked on their links. Here's a screen shot for the group labeled "technology:" Sorry for the blurriness. Anyway, on the left hand side you can see the handle of the group's owner and a list of group members. In the center you see recent posts, with links to each post; some are news stories, while others are event ann... More About: Search , Next

2007-02-11 00:53:01 Searchles: The N ext Genera tion of Search? - Submit ting a Link (Page 3 of 4 )You don't actually need the bookmarklet to submit a link. I didn't install it because I personally don't like installing anything extra in my browser that I don't have to. If you don't install it and want to submit something, you do have to open a second browser. In this case, just go to Searchles' home page, log in, click on "post a link," and you'll get a screen like this (which I've already filled in): It asks you for the URL, title, tags for the page, and a description. The center box asks whether you want to add this post to any groups. You can also (on the far right) send the post to friends. Right after I submitted the link, I did a search on one of the tags I used for the site, and was delighted to see that it turned up at the top of the results. Not only that, but the link and description turned up on Searchles' home page (and it stayed there until more recent link... More About: Search , Next

2007-02-11 00:53:01 Searchles: The N ext Genera tion of Search? - Good So Far, But Room for Improvement (Page 4 of 4 )I shouldn't put down Searchles for my own uncertainties with new technologies. And to be honest, it's a very promising social search engine, especially for being in existence only three months. But there were some things I really would have liked to have seen that it either doesn't have or weren't obvious. For openers, an on-site tutorial that takes you through everything you can do would have been nice. I know the company posted a tutorial on YouTube, but when I checked that out, there didn't seem to be an audio track; just showing you with the visuals isn't enough (and I did check my equipment to make sure it wasn't just me). I was able to figure out how to add friends and several other things, thanks to links in the appropriate places, but I'm the sort of person that likes to RTFM. Fortunately, when you click help, the site takes you to a page that includes links to several cate... More About: Search , Next
The Hidden World of Click Fraud - The Search Engin
2007-02-11 00:53:01 The Hidden World of Click Frau d - The Search Engines React (Page 4 of 4 )So what are the search engines doing to protect advertisers from fraudulent clicks? Google CEO Eric Schmidt did not help matters when he advocated a market-driven correction, claiming that over time the advertisers will pay less for click throughs as they factor in bad clicks. Advertisers do not seem to be reacting yet.Other solutions that Google has tried in its efforts to contain click fraud include putting click fraud metrics on advertisers' Adsense accounts. Details about this can be seen on http://adwords.blogspot.com/2006/07/estim ating-invalid-clicks.html. It basically tells advertisers what amount of click throughs are believed to be fraudulent, so that advertisers are not charged for said clicks. Google posted percentages of around ten percent, so Outsell Inc's report of 14-21 percent is looking more and more real.Google claim that the numbers being thrown around by third party consultants are to...

2007-02-11 00:53:01 The Hidden World of Click Fraud - Before You Star t Screaming (Page 3 of 4 )This is not happening only in Lagos; think Mumbai, Bangladesh, Calcutta, Shanghai, Pakistan, and Peru. I think the only reason you are getting this information is because I am currently in Lagos. What I am saying is, this is a global phenomenon, not a Nigerian one.Others Speak UpWhen I asked him from where he got the idea, he casually mentioned a name I knew very well (all hearsay, so I cannot provide the URL). The site is probably the biggest on all things Nigerian; apart from that, I had been privy to reviewing the early versions of the site. The graphic designer I interviewed was even more cavalier. According to him "the advertisers have huge budgets, a few hundred dollars will not really hurt them," and anyway "Google keeps most of the money."Head still spinning, I spent the evening with my colleagues reviewing our strategies for bringing traffic to our current blogs and sites, and sharing ...
The Hidden World of Click Fraud - The Webmasters
2007-02-11 00:53:01 The Hidden World of Click Fraud - The Webmaster s (Page 2 of 4 ) Lagos is the technology and financial center of Nigeria. On a darker side, it was where the Nigerian scam letter began. It fortunately it missed being home to the biggest click fraudster in Nigeria; that dubious distinction rests with a resident of another province. There is literally a glut of highly qualified professionals; thousands of them are unemployed. They then turn to Internet fraud, or go into business as software developers and website designers. It is the latter category (specifically web designers) who perpetrate click fraud on Adsense. This is not a blanket accusation, but the percentage of webmasters that are involved in it is close to eight percent. Fortunately, they only do it on their own sites, not their clients' sites. The first webmaster I interviewed (let's call him John) is a web designer who has being in the industry for close to four years. He has built hundreds of web sites for clients, a... More About: Webmasters
The Hidden World of Click Fraud
2007-02-11 00:53:01 The Hidden World of Clic k Frau d (Page 1 of 4 )You've heard plenty of reports about click fraud. But who is doing it? And what are the pressures motivating them? This author interviews several anonymous webmasters engaging in click fraud in Lagos, and discovers a small piece of a much bigger problem. After six months away from Lagos, working in sun-drenched Eket, I returned to Lagos intent on getting up to speed on what my companions in the tech center of West Africa were up to. Three days into my return, I was at a meeting for a non-governmental organization for which I do pro bono work. After the meeting I was talking to another web master who was offering me web space. As our conversation progressed he began griping about how much competition there was in web design. I asked him what other things he was doing apart from web design and hosting, and with a sly look on his face he shared his practices with me. Ten minutes later, stupefied, I was interviewing another colleague, a...

2007-02-11 00:53:01 Yahoo Finally Update s Search Ad Platform - More Panama Details and Perspective (Page 4 of 4 )While Yahoo! Search Marketing (the actual name now that it's live) is already available to some users, for a while new users will go into the old system before being migrated over. Voluntary migration of users will happen over the next few months. Since it's so close to the holidays, mandatory migration won't begin until after the start of next year. Once you do make the switch, you're stuck with it, but as one observer noted, this is "a fact which is unlikely to generate any tears." It's also worth noting that it's mainly the front end of the product that went live immediately. Yahoo CEO Terry Semel fielded a question on that point during Yahoo's conference call covering its financial results and the YSM release. To quote Semel, "We have achieved exactly what we set out to achieve and that is...the front-end going as of today and basically, marketplace design in the first quarter [of... Yahoo Finally Updates Search Ad Platform - Better
2007-02-11 00:53:01 Yahoo Finally Update s Search Ad Platform - Better Targeting, More Control (Page 3 of 4 )If that was the only change that Yahoo was rolling out, it would be very welcome, but hardly something you'd expect to take 18 months to create. Fortunately, the search engine is offering a lot more than just that. Barry Schwartz describes the new interface as "snappier, more flexible and very sleek and user friendly." But what does it let you do? For openers, you can add start and end dates to your campaigns now. Also, Yahoo has promised faster ad activation, so you can see your ads go live in minutes. Advertisers can take advantage of the new hierarchical structure of Account --> Campaign --> Ad Group --> Ad, and you can bid by ad group. You can also rotate multiple ads, a useful feature for those who want to experiment with how well different ads do (and who doesn't?). Those of you who have wanted to aim you ads at web surfers from particular parts of the world will be pleased to he... More About: Yahoo , Dates
Yahoo Click Fraud Settlement Increases Transparenc
2007-02-10 06:51:02 Yahoo Click Frau d Settlement Increases Transparency (Page 1 of 4 )After a year of litigation, a California judge gave preliminary approval to a settlement in a class action suit against Yahoo concerning click fraud. Google also settled a class action lawsuit revolving around click fraud earlier this year. There are some important differences in the two settlements, which might reflect some very different attitudes at the two competing search engines. You might remember that Google agreed to a $90 million settlement last March to clear up litigation in a class action lawsuit led by Arkansas-based Lane's Gifts and Collectibles. Yahoo's settlement, at least initially, isn't nearly as large; the venerable search engine will pay $4.95 million in cash to plaintiff's counsel. In Google's case, the plaintiff's counsel received $30 million, while credits to advertisers for the class action were capped at $60 million. Yahoo's settlement has no such cap on advertiser claims.Yes, you read... More About: Yahoo , Men

2007-02-10 06:51:02 Yahoo Click Frau d Settlement Increases Transparency - Google's Terms vs. Yahoo's Terms (Page 2 of 4 )The terms of Yahoo's settlement seem to be more wide-ranging than the terms of Google's settlement, and not just on the matter of money. First, let me start with the sections that deal with the eligible period for the refund. Here Google is actually a little more generous than Yahoo. Normally, Google allows advertisers to apply for reimbursement for fraudulent clicks within 60 days of when the clicks occurred. For Google's settlement, the search engine giant has stated that "we are going to open up that window for all advertisers, regardless of when the questionable clicks occurred. This agreement covers all advertisers who claim to have been charged but not reimbursed for invalid clicks dating from 2002 when we launched our 'cost per click' advertising program through the date the settlement is approved by the judge."Yahoo's settlement, on the other hand, offers advertisers "... Yahoo Click Fraud Settlement Increases Transparenc
2007-02-10 06:51:02 Yahoo Click Frau d Settlement Increases Transparency - Yahoo's Additional Terms (Page 3 of 4 )Practically all of Yahoo's additional terms aim at increasing the company's transparency in its handling of click fraud, and letting its advertisers know that they have a voice within the search engine that will be heard. For example, one term mandated by the settlement obligates Yahoo to appoint an ombudsman, a "Traffic Quality Advocate" to address advertiser concerns about click fraud and traffic quality. This person is specifically intended to "serve as the internal voice of the advertiser within Yahoo! on these matters," according to Yahoo's web site.Understanding that visibility works both ways, Yahoo agreed to a third term in the settlement that further opens up its click through protection system to its advertising customers. Once a year, the venerable search engine will bring a panel of individual advertisers to its CTP headquarters. These advertisers will then be able revie... More About: Yahoo , Men

2007-02-10 06:51:02 Yahoo Click Frau d Settlement Increases Transparency - Yahoo Goes Above and Beyond (Page 4 of 4 )Yahoo has publicly committed itself to taking steps to increase the transparency of its click through protection process that go above and beyond the terms of the settlement. You read that right. To some extent, these two points are almost mere details, but properly implemented, they could go a long way toward reassuring advertisers that Yahoo is handling their click fraud issues with all the care and prompt attention they deserve. The first one, in fact, deals with response times. Yahoo stated that it will provide advertisers submitting click fraud or traffic quality inquiries with a specific time by which they will know the results of the company's investigation of the issue. If it's a really complicated investigation, Yahoo will at least let them know when they can expect to receive a progress report. Granted, this is a somewhat vague point; after all, Yahoo isn't saying it will reso... More About: Yahoo , Men
eBay Enters Contextual Ad Business - Some Interest
2007-02-10 06:51:02 eBay Enters Contextual Ad Business - Some Inter esting Points (Page 4 of 4 )From the sounds of it, Google doesn't seem to think that eBay's AdContext is in direct competition with AdSense. Indeed, as it currently stands, it can be argued that it isn't. On the other hand, keep in mind that eBay owns Shopping.com, so surely AdContext could be extended to advertise other commercial sites. If eBay starts signing up advertisers who offer specific items for sale through eBay ads, suddenly the two programs start looking very similar. On the other hand, it's worth emphasizing the element that is, at least in my opinion, the biggest differentiator between AdContext and AdSense. AdContext is cost-per-action, not cost-per-click. It has the potential to be the largest scale application of a CPA program yet. That means a lot of people are going to be watching the results. Given that eBay's affiliate program is one of the largest and longest-running on the Web, if anyone has a chance of making... More About: Ebay , Text , Interest

2007-02-10 06:51:02 eBay Enters Contextual Ad Business - Who Will Benefit (Page 3 of 4 )So before you sign up for that monthly check from eBay, how do you know AdContext will be right for you? Well, a number of observers have noted that the program is designed to help the little guy make a better living online. If you're running an online store, it's probably not for you, but if you're trying to monetize content rather than sell goods, that's another story. So in that sense, if you're a blogger, you might want to take a look at this program. But you probably have some questions. If you're already using Google ads or other context-based search engine ads on your blog, you know that they can be, well, jealous. When is the last time you saw a site running both Google and Yahoo ads? If you want to run eBay ads on your site, but don't want to stop running Google ads, you'll obviously need to ask Google about it first. But at least one person who claims to have checked with Google "three times just to... More About: Ebay , Text
eBay Enters Contextual Ad Business - How it Works,
2007-02-10 06:51:02 eBay Enters Contextual Ad Business - How it Work s, How it's Different (Page 2 of 4 )As everyone knows, Google's advertising program works on a cost per click basis. That means advertisers pay Google every time someone clicks on their ad, and likewise Google pays the ad publisher a commission for each click. That common model has helped many a site owner earn some money on the side while working a regular job (and even supported quite a few people all by itself). Unfortunately, it's also vulnerable to click fraud, which involves web surfers or automated programs clicking on ads with no intention of making a purchase or otherwise converting. That hurts advertisers, who pay for useless clicks.eBay's model, on the other hand, is cost per action, with no cost per click component to it whatsoever. As one observer pointed out in a forum thread on the subject, "You could have one million clicks, but if no purchases have been made, you won't make a penny. But, looking at it another way,... eBay Enters Contextual Ad Business
2007-02-10 06:51:02 eBay Enters Contextual Ad Business (Page 1 of 4 )You have to wonder when two companies who both say they are emphatically not competing with each other seem to be explicitly entering each other's fields. First, we hear the most reliable rumors yet that Google is setting up a system to rival eBay's PayPal. Now, straight from eBay, we hear that the auction giant is entering the contextual ad business. What's going on? Keep reading to find out.The announcement was made at the recent eBay Developer's Conference in Las Vegas by Michael van Swaaij, eBay's chief strategy officer. The program is supposed to go into beta mode this month. It's called AdContext, and if you want to try it out, you need to be an eBay affiliate and sign up for the program. As near as I can tell, though, you don't need to have been an eBay affiliate for any particular length of time before applying for the AdContext plan. The new program almost sounds boring on the face of it. 2007-02-10 06:51:02 Coming Soon: Googl e GBuy - Hurdles and Opportunities (Page 4 of 4 )It may sound strange to say that Google is getting into the online payment as a means to an end. It's not an easy business to do well; there are far too many details that could go wrong. For openers, buyers and sellers need to feel safe using the system, and some kind of controls need to be in place to protect against fraud. Privacy protections also need to be in place; for example, PayPal has never shared the financial information of buyers with sellers. How challenging is it? Robert Holmes, a Los Angeles detective who has tracked criminals on eBay, pointed out that "If you start branching into other people's money, you really are branching into something that is completely new and foreign.it's like running a bank." In short, you may trust Google with your web searches, but can you trust it with your money? And yet, even though Google is best known for handling information, it has handled money, too. 2007-02-10 06:51:02 Coming Soon: Google GBuy - So What Will GBuy Look Like? (Page 3 of 4 )GBuy has reportedly been in the works, being tested, for at least the last nine months. The Wall Street Journal has described how it's supposed to work. GBuy merchants will include an icon next to their sponsored links, showing that they're a "trusted GBuy merchant." Consumers will be able to store their credit card information on Google as part of the GBuy system, which should facilitate purchasing. The program won't be entirely free, of course, though it will be free to start with. After the beta period (and with Google, there's no telling how long that will last), Jordan Rohan expects that the search engine giant will charge merchants about 1.5 to two percent. That undercuts PayPal's current fees for Premiere and Business accounts (the kind of accounts that accept credit cards). Now, it doesn't undercut PayPal's fees by a lot. If you're keeping score, those fees currently stand at 1.9 to 2.9 percent, plu... More About: Hat
SEO: An Overview
2007-02-09 12:50:01 SEO: An Over view (Page 1 of 4 )Developer Shed CEO Jonathan Caputo recently gave a presentation at iDate, a social networking conference in Miami. He covered introductory search engine optimization for an audience composed of people who own and work for online dating and social networking sites. If you know someone who needs a good introduction to basic SEO tactics, you'll find that this article, based on that presentation, is a good start. In many respects search engine optimization is considered to be a black art. So you should keep in mind that, while we at Developer Shed have implemented these concepts and achieved top rankings in Google, we can't guarantee that what worked for us will be as effective for you. Also remember that many of the concepts we discuss will focus on optimizing for Google, because that search engine owns such a large share of the search market. I'd like to make one final point before we dive in: effective SEO is truly an organic concept; it must be pursu... More About: View , Overview
SEO: An Overview - All About Content
2007-02-09 12:50:01 SEO: An Over view - All About Content (Page 2 of 4 )I'd like to cover five topics here:• Duplicate content.. Content relevancy.. Content aging.. Content theft.. Content length.Duplicate content is one of the leading causes of search engine penalties. There are two kinds of duplicate content: internal and external. Internal content is easier to do something about. If one or more of your web pages is identical to others in your site, you need to rewrite the page or rethink whether your site even needs it. External duplicate content I'll cover in more detail when I discuss content theft. It's incumbent upon you to make sure your site is cleanly organized and your content is original and not duplicated in any way. It doesn't hurt to spend some time searching the web regularly to make sure your content remains your own and no one is stealing it.Content relevancy is becoming more and more important with search engines. SEO: An Overview - URLs and Sitemaps
2007-02-09 12:50:01 SEO: An Over view - URLs and Site maps (Page 3 of 4 )You might not expect it, but the URLs of your content can actually make a big difference as to how the search engines index your site. Search engine friendly URLs use keywords from your content inside the URL itself. That gives you a better chance of inching up higher on the search engine results pages. Many sites, particularly ones whose content is fed from a database, operate with dynamic URLs. This is a URL that specifies a page and passes parameters to identify which content should be shown. The problem with this kind of URL is that it doesn't index very well. Dynamic URLs look something like this: http://www.seochat.com?index.php&page =article&task=view&id=99As you can see, the dynamic URL calls a generic file, and passes parameters to load the content. You're much better off with a URL such as the following, which includes valuable keywords that appear in the content AND the URL: http://www.seochat.com/article/sea... SEO: An Overview - Link Optimization and Redundanc
2007-02-09 12:50:01 SEO: An Over view - Link Optimization and Redu ndancy (Page 4 of 4 )There are several points to consider when optimizing your links; I'm going to focus mainly on optimizing your outbound links. First, you want to limit the number of outbound links that exist on a single page on your site. If you have too many you start looking like a link farm, which Google penalizes; also, too many outbound links on one page can be confusing to your visitors. When you do link to outbound sites, make sure the links are relevant. For example, if you're operating an online dating site, why would you link to a site selling ephedra? Putting links on your site that have no relevance to your particular focus can move your site down in the search engine results and, again, confuse your visitors. On the subject of link exchanges, link farms, and link swapping, you want to avoid them (especially link farms) at all cost. Search engines spot them easily. They can result in your site being completely blacklisted ... More About: View

2007-02-09 12:50:01 Make Your Video s Rank on the Search Engines - Make it Yours (Page 4 of 4 )You should host your video on your own site whenever possible. When you do submit it to another web site or video search engine, you should submit it with the highest encoding quality permitted by the site's guidelines. According to Ben Wills, writing in his Social Media Marketing blog, "One theory is that the video quality can actually gain more visibility, but a higher quality also means a greater chance for services that transcribe audio for content to use in ranking algorithms...that's a good thing."If your video is going to be making the rounds, you should add a watermark to it so that web surfers know it's yours. Even if you don't think it's going to travel far and wide, with the viral nature of the Internet you never know what's going to catch on. Including a watermark of some kind in the video will help promote your brand. And if you want to encourage that kind of viral awareness, by all means in... More About: Videos

2007-02-09 12:50:01 Make Your Video s Rank on the Search Engines - Make it Easy to Get Spotted (Page 3 of 4 )You wouldn't dream of not having a site map page for the text on your website. What about a site map for videos? The site map itself would be in text, of course, which is easier for the search engines to index, and you could include a few words describing each video. As mentioned above, it's a great opportunity to make the most of anchor text. You will want to keep the video site map under 1,000 links, so if you have a huge library of videos you may have to plan your map carefully. What should you do if you're a publisher with lots of time-sensitive content? If your videos follow the headlines, as would be expected for a news organization, you might want to use a paid search campaign to lure web surfers to your site. It's very difficult to get to the top of the SERPs within 72 hours for most keywords with a strictly organic SEO campaign -- and that's the time frame a news publisher needs to a... 2007-02-09 12:50:01 Make Your Video s Rank on the Search Engines - Back to the Basics (Page 2 of 4 )You could start with the items that you already know the major search engines can index well. The most obvious of these is text. So you might consider including a transcript of the video on your web site, or at least a summary that hits on the key points. Having transcribed some lengthy video myself, I know how time-consuming that can be. Fortunately, that's not all you can do to help the search engines find you.Remember your basic SEO skills and look to where you can optimize. For example, what file name did you give the video? Was it something like "122706-tut.mov"? That might have meaning to you, but it means nothing to a search engine. Try for something a little more descriptive, like "December-SEO-Basics-Tutorial.mov" to help both the search engines and your visitors know what that video contains.File names aren't the only place you can insert keywords. 2007-02-09 12:50:01 Make Your Video s Rank on the Search Engines (Page 1 of 4 )There was a time when web pages consisted mainly of text and perhaps a few static images to add a little color and interest. Many web sites are still like that, but by and large the web has become a lot more dynamic and interactive. One sign of this is the popularity of videos. If you're thinking about including videos on your web site, that's going to affect your optimization strategy. There's nothing wrong with continuing to keep it simple, but your visitors are likely to want and expect more. Plus videos are a great way to attract those visitors in the first place, and the issues with the slow download speeds experienced through dial-up Internet connections are becoming less of a problem every day. It helps, of course, but it's not absolutely necessary; you just need to work harder on the basics. You already know how important it is to write about popular topics, get lots of links, and post frequently. Let's refine those points a little. If you want to copy Ted Leonsis in writing a blog that's appropriate to your business, you need to think about its focus. Who are you trying to attract? What are they likely to be searching for? You can't escape it; you need to be thinking about the keywords you will use for your blog. But you need to do it intelligently. You can try a general high traffic keyword, but how much chance do you have of ranking - and gaining visitors - for that term? Better to choose a moderately popular term, which will give you a better chance of ranking, attract more traffic with less effort, and p...
