New Theme: zBench
2010-10-27 16:12:00
Today’s new, feature-packed Theme has a really polished design that can give your blog a more technical look—without appearing too cold. I think you’ll really like it. Let’s take a look at zBench. The zBench Theme in action zBench has a lot of great features that make personalizing your blog a snap. Features like custom background images and colors, a custom header image, bonus widget areas in your site footer, and custom menus with beautiful drop-down effects. My favorite feature is probably the alternate layouts available in Appearance → Theme Options. With one-click you can have your site sporting multiple sidebars in several different configurations! The multiple layouts available with zBench Designed by the enigmatically named zwwooooo, zBench is available now for WordPress.com users and, for self-hosted WordPress.org sites, from the WordPress.org Themes Directory. Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels): One sidebar: main column width is 633, si...
New Theme: Elegant Grunge
2010-10-25 20:56:00
Give your site a unique look with our newest theme, Elegant Grunge . With a touch of faded grunge the design gives your site a textured, hand-made look while remaining crisply artistic and structured. Example of Elegant Grunge in action. Elegant Grunge features a widget-ready footer and an optional full-width page template that removes the sidebar. Make it your own by choosing from four layout options and adding a custom header and menu. Example of theme layout options. Designed by Michael Tyson Elegant Grunge is now available for WordPress.com and, for self-hosted WordPress.org sites, from the WordPress.org Theme s Directory. Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels): One sidebar: main column width is 490, sidebar width is 220. Two sidebars: main column width is 490, primary sidebar width is 220, secondary sidebar width is 220. No sidebar: main column width is 760. Custom header image dimensions are 956 by 160 (width, height).
New Theme: Spectrum
2010-10-13 18:01:00
I’m happy to introduce Spectrum, a fine new addition to our ever-growing collection of themes. Spectrum comes as a colorful and fresh theme sporting a clean layout with one main column and a sidebar on the right. It supports custom menus, background, and header image, so you could configure the look to your liking. Example of Spectrum's look and feel. The subtle transparency on the main body is built into the theme so you can put your own background color and image under Appearance → Background and still enjoy the smooth look given by the transparency. Here is an example of how you could change and customize the theme’s default look. Showcasing customization with drop-down menus, background, and header. When it comes to showing your images Spectrum hides its sidebar and uses a full-width layout for maximum space so you don’t have to worry about your images looking too small. There is also an option for showing a special colored tag cloud on the theme footer ...

Hello, Goodbye: Offsite Redirect Upgrade
2010-10-05 01:03:00
“You say goodbye, I say hello.” – The Beatles Needless to say, we hope you never want to leave WordPress.com. But, should the day arrive that you decide to strike out on your own and set up a self-hosted WordPress blog with the free, open source WordPress software available at WordPress.org, we’ve got you covered with our new Offsite Redirect upgrade. Imagine you’ve decided to make the move, have exported your content from your wordpress.com blog and imported it into your new self-hosted WordPress site. Purchasing the Offsite Redirect upgrade will take the traffic coming to your old wordpress.com blog and forward it to your new domain so that links to your old content won’t break and you won’t take an SEO hit as a result of your move. Oh, and unlike the old domain mapping/DNS workaround, the signup process is easy as pie. Mmm, pie. Think of the Offsite Redirect as the flip side of domain mapping, because that’s basically what it is....
Sexy Stats
2010-09-30 17:35:00
You may have noticed a change to your stat charts a couple of weeks ago. We ditched Flash in place of a more robust charting library called Flot. If you didn’t notice, go check it out because you can view all of the new charts with modern browsers including mobile devices such as iPhone and iPad. Sooo sexy! Today we updated the charts to use bars instead of points and lines. We’ve also made the stats page super sexy. Each module can be opened and closed, moved, or hidden completely. If you don’t want to see a module, minimize it with one click or use the Screen Options to keep it out of sight. Customize everything and view stats the way you want to. As you hover over each bar in the chart it changes color and displays a tooltip, giving you more information about the data. If the chart is showing data by day, Saturdays and Sundays have a light gray background to make it easier to see weekly patterns. Under the chart you’ll notice a new area, called “for...

Welcome Windows Live Spaces Bloggers
2010-09-27 20:01:00
We’re excited to announce that WordPress.com is now the default blogging platform for Windows Live Spaces users. We’ve worked with our partners at Microsoft to create a simple migration service for Spaces bloggers to easily bring all their posts, comments, and photos to WordPress.com. Over a six month period, beginning today, Windows Live Spaces users will have the option to move their blogs to WordPress.com. To make this possible, we’ve created a brand new importer for Windows Live Spaces to WordPress.com. New Windows Live users will also be offered a WordPress.com blog when they choose to create a new blog. All current links to your Windows Live Spaces blog will automatically redirect to your new WordPress.com blog after you set it up. In addition, this redirect we’ve set up will maintain your current traffic levels from search engines, as it automatically notifies search engines that your content has a new home on WordPress.com (the technical background on...

IE9 User? You’ll Love ‘Pinning’ Your Blog
2010-09-17 15:09:00
If you use the new Internet Explorer 9 beta (IE9) on Windows 7 and have a blog on WordPress.com, you should definitely check out some cool new features. First, not only do the charts on your stats page load faster — thanks to new canvas element support in IE9 — but each WordPress.com site also includes a high-res icon for your browser, taskbar, or shortcuts. Once you start using IE9, you’ll find this icon comes in handy when you want to “pin” a blog. Pinning? Yes, Pinning! Wait, just what is pinning, you may be asking? It’s actually quite simple and a lot like bookmarking but on your computer instead of in the browser. Once pinned, you can launch your blog right from your Windows taskbar. A handy context menu lets you access some of your most common tasks such as adding a new post or moderating comments, with a single click. You also can pin a friend’s blog to stay up-to-date on their latest posts. To get started, the first thing you need ...
