Useful SpongeCell
2008-02-06 23:38:00 Just had a chat with Marc Guldimann, CEO of Spongecell in San Francisco. I really love this product. How much time do you spend adding events to your digital calendar? With Evite, Facebook, and other social networking sites, it takes a personal assistant to keep up with events. The result: I just don't go to a lot of events because I don't add them to my calendar when they are first announced or they just never make it out of my e-mail box etc. Here's a good example of the utility of this product. I'm definitely looking for ways to implement this for some of our clients at Fabric.

Social Networks and Entrepreneurs @ Caltech
2008-01-14 02:55:00 I went to the Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum in Pasadena this Saturday. On the agenda: "Social Networks and the Entrepreneurial Reality: Fertile Platform or Investment NutWorks?" (Full description here.) Speakers included: Jason Feffer, CEO SodaHead / Previously with MySpaceMark Jeffrey, CTO Mahalo.comJoe Jasin, VP Corporate Development, SK TelecomTony Karrer, Ph.D./CTO TechEmpowerStuart McFarlane, Managing Director, Momentum Venture ManagementAndrew Shaindlin, Executive Director, Caltech This is a hot topic and the room was packed. I'd say it was a mixed crowd. A fair amount of geeks, a few business people, academics, and some that looked as if they were VC's or want to be VC's. Overall, a highly energetic atmosphere. During the breakfast, I chatted up a few friends and talked to someone I met through Ryze years back. You remember Ryze, right? I noticed quite a few entrepreneurs in the room, and I suspect they valued the contributions of Jason Feffer and Mark Jeffrey. Jason... More About: Social Networks , Entrepreneurs

Multicultural players get social media
2008-01-10 00:09:00 Great article in Ad Age today! Multicultural advertisers get social media. The numbers presented are promising. Clearly, some of the push in Spanish language sites makes a lot of sense. I wonder how different these initiatives are? A pure translation of English sites won't necessarily do it. If you hope to make a big dent in this market, I think you have to go all the way. More About: Social , Media , Players

Mark Zuckerberg should step down
2007-12-07 02:51:00 The Beacon disaster was all the proof we needed. Mark Zucker berg (23), CEO of Facebook, is too inexperienced to run Facebook and he should step down. His team knows the difference between opt-in and opt-out. The decision to leave it up to users to opt-out shows either tremendous arrogance or a disturbing lack of understanding of the most significant privacy issue of our time. It's about users - stupid. They don't like to have their information shared or published without their explicit permission.Yesterday, a friend told me "Yeah, he's young, but he's so smart... Look at what he's done." Really? Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Facebook. I use it every day. But there is nothing new or revolutionary about Facebook. Social networking sites has been around for 6+ years. The truth is Friendster and MySpace paved the way for rapid adoption of online social networking to really take off. Now, building out with college kids was a good idea and Mark's timing was right. The F8 "op... More About: Step , Berg

Facebook application development
2007-11-06 02:35:00 Fabric has jumped into the Facebook application development arena with one of our partners, Russell Smith. It's interesting to learn how to make this work from a marketing perspective. While much of the work in this arena is truly only "testing," some of the lessons are applicable to our seed marketing and buzz work for other clients. Have a look at the Facebook apps and let me know what you think. More About: Development , Application
Better places
2007-10-18 17:45:00 A while back, I had a look at Plazes, a European start-up that focused on users providing data on interesting places and sharing those with friends through Web/Mobile. I didn't really enjoy the user experience of the BETA (I think it was 0.9) so I dropped it. (I'll have another look at it tomorrow. It does look as if it's changed a bit.) Today, I came across a similar US based venture Platial . I think this one has potential. It's easy to use and some of the entries are interesting to browse. Have a peek. Let me know what you think. Get the download on Web TV
2007-08-10 18:11:00 I'm in research mode this week. I've started reading two excellent Blogs on the topic of Web/TV and P2P. Janko Roettgers P2P Blog is most excellent when it comes to, yep, you guessed it: P2P. From video podcasting to Torrent sharing, Janko covers it all. He also writes for NewTeeVee, a Web/TV publication from GigaOM. I'm getting my daily dose. More About: Download

So it is true... FaceBook works
2007-07-11 17:57:00 People do a lot with FaceBook. Here's the latest study from College Humor. 65% have checked up on an ex boyfriend or girlfriend using Facebook . 15.5% of men and 1.6% of women have “gratified themselves” to Facebook. Zuckerberg helped 19.9% of men and 11.4% of women hookup. 68.2% of women judged others while on Facebook. 61.9% of men cast stones. 36.9% of women and 36% of men have considered quiting the service. Facebook vs MySpace, do we have a winner?
2007-05-31 00:00:00 In my book, it's FaceBook. This is a company that understands the real power behind wikionomics, open-source, and collaboration. I just don't see that with the MySpace team. 2007-05-30 02:48:00 In my book, it's FaceBook. This is a company that understands the real power behind wikionomics, open-source, and collaboration. I just don't see that with the MySpace team. Especially not at the top level. It's old thinking vs new thinking. With FaceBook releasing their F8 platform (more info here), it shall be interesting to see how MySpace answers - if at all. Twitter works part-time
2007-05-17 19:49:00 Apparently, the Twitter folks didn't get the "It must scale" memo. The site has been down a lot lately and it is becoming a big issue for some users. If it becomes too much to handle, have a look at Jaiku. There is little doubt that Twitter's model is hard to defend. There are virtually no barriers to entry so unless you can grow your userbase very fast (popularity) and keep the users happy - you could be yesterdays news... fast. I like Twitter. I hope they can sort their reliability problems. Hanging in there, for now. More About: Time , Works , Part
Self-improvement tools - Part I
2007-05-13 00:00:00 Several new sites offer self-improvement tools. I had a look at Traineo, MyFoodDiary, PeerTrainer, Skinnyr, and FatSecret.
