National Geographic mocks the name of God
2007-12-18 09:18:00 I haven't written in quite a while but I thought this may be pertinent to some people who honor God. I've watched a documentary called "The Secret Bible" which is televised on the National Geographic channel and produced by Morningstar Productions. The episode is about the chapter Revelations in the Bible. I noticed in the closed caption portion of the show the name of God was set in lower case as "god." There were only a couple or few references to God's name and in all the cases His name was spelled as god. In the context of the people using God's name referred to the God and not many gods or any god. Every pronoun such as "I" was capitalized and every name or subjective article was appropriately capitalized. Every name and every place or regional name was also capitalized appropriately. Every word was grammatically spelled as it should have been. Furthermore, I found it peculiar that the person and editor who transcribed the closed caption even capitalized "Satan." This gives... Setting up Autoresponder Emails to Help Increase Sales
2007-07-25 12:46:00 One of the sites that I'm currently helping in their affiliate marketing asked me an important question on setting up an autoresponder series of emails to help increase sales. Upon my request to institute an autoresponder series of emails to their visitors who sign up for the newsletter, I suggested to her that a seven-step autoresponder email system may help increase sales. She asked if seven is a good number or six since six is the number that is used by one of her competitors. I personally don't think it will make a significant difference whether a series of seven emails are sent out or six emails are sent out over a periodic basis. I think every week would be great but it would depend on the strategy based on the objective. In this instance, we wanted to increase sales. Isn't this every entrepreneur's and proprietor's goals? In this specific example, if a visitor were to search online for a solution to stop their dog from barking ? a common problem for dog owners. Evidentl... Block dynamic pages from Googlebot with robots.txt file
2007-07-03 10:31:00 I've been trying to find out how to block some dynamic urls from the Googlebot. The search bots for Yahoo! Slurp and MSNBot use the same or very similar syntax to block dynamic urls. As an example I have this one line in my htaccess file which allows me to use static pages instead of dynamic pages but I found sometimes the Googlebot will still crawl my dynamic pages. This can lead to duplicate content which isn't condoned by any of the major search engines. I'm trying to clean up my personals site [1] as it currently ranks well with Yahoo but not Google. I believe MSN Live has similar algorithms to Google but this isn't scientifically proven by any means. I believe I have found some answers on ranking well with Google, MSN and possibly Yahoo. I'm in the midst of testing right now. I have managed to rank well on Google for a client's site already for relevant keywords. Anyway, here is how to block the dynamic pages from Google using your robots.txt file. The following is an ex... More About: Robots , File , Block , Pages , Lock
Add Google Adsense code to Wordpress template header
2007-07-02 00:01:00 Just a quick tutorial on how to add the Google Adsense code to your Word press template in the header section using the Adsense-Deluxe plugin [1]. Once you download and install the Adsense plugin and activate it in Wordpress, click on "Options" then "AdsenseDeluxe". [2] Scroll down to the section "New Adsense Block". Type in a new name such as "header". Paste your adsense code (usually 720x90 fomat). Add in an optional description. Click the "Add Adsense Block" button. iPhone features, pros, cons
2007-07-01 12:58:00 I just read an article on the iPhone and watched a video on the features, pros and cons of the iPhone by Walter S. Mossberg and Katherine Boehret of the Wall Street Journal online iPhone review [1]. I just wrote a quick list of the iPhone features, pros and cons list here. The iPhone I believe will the next big seller for Apple. I believe it will take a year or so before it really catches on with the masses since it's still quite an expensive system. It definitely raises the bar for all the other phone manufacturers and this is where the cell market is headed. Kudos to Apple and Steve Jobs for creating an excellently-designed product. Maybe they should help design an Apple car. Wouldn't that be cool? price - $499 for 4 GB or $599 for 8 GB - AT&T offering special monthly plan for iPhone with unlimited Internet and email use for $60 to $220 per month. Adding mp3 audio to Wordpress blog
2007-06-29 12:25:00 I'm just testing out this Word press plugin that allows one to add mp3 audio to my blog. There were a few caveats. It only plays mp3 files (an Adobe flash player is what the cause) and mp3 files need to be encoded at 11.025 kHz 22.050 kHz or 44.100 kHz to avoid the "chipmunk" effect which plays the sound at double speed. It's pretty simple it seems. Download from Wordpress mp3 plugin [1]. In vista, it automatically unzips the files and then upload the directory "audio-player" and the file "audio-player.php" to the "wp-content/plugins" directory, then set the the plugin to active in your Admin control panel plugin tab. Once that is complete, create a folder called "audio" in your webroot. You can change the default to another directory by changing the directory location of your mp3 files in the options page for "Audio Player". Then upload your mp3 file to this directory. Now add the code: [audio:name_of_mp3_file.mp3] Here is a sample: [audio:test.mp3] Opps. There seems to be f... More About: Blog
FTP problem Linksys router-connection error
2007-06-25 09:45:00 I just recently purchased a Linksys router WRV200 with VPN capabilities but noticed that I couldn't connect to my ftp server using the regular port 21. I was able to connect via sftp which uses port 22 without a problem. I browsed around on Google for the solution to the ftp connection error but couldn't find the answer so I ended up calling Linksys tech support. It did take awhile to resolve the issue but the solution is really simple. All you need to do is set the Firewall/Port Triggering ports in the Linksys control panel. Login to your Linksys control panel at 192.168.1.1 then fill out the settings as displayed here [1]. Iron Road movie, CBC TV mini series
2007-06-23 10:38:00 Just got back doing background (i.e. extra) work in Kamloops and Kelowna. It was long and arduous but the great thing is that I met a lot of great people there. We created a little group on facebook Iron Road group [1] for those of your who are interested. The back setting is the Chinese workers who toiled under extreme conditions building the railroads in the Kamloops regions. Evidently, they were paid a dollar a day. There is a memorial museum at the Kamloops museum. Here is the premise of Iron Road [2]. I have good memories of David Wu, the Director. He was very encouraging with the background folks and I was surprised to see that he didn't demand to have propane heaters for his tent. I've never seen that. He's a real trooper and just an indication of his character. Tony Leung was very genial and friendly with everyone including the crew and background. He's a big star in China like Tom Cruise here in North America. Anyway, nice to be back and getting in the swing of thin... More About: News , Movie , Series , Mini
GPS microchips implanted into humans
2007-06-23 10:17:00 This isn't totally recent news but I was just watching a "Surveillance" series by the National Geographic Channel and there was a segment that described inmates who are now being implanted with GPS microchips in the US. Actually, there are now around younger folks in Mexico who are implanting themselves with these microchip devices in there arms to be a part of the VIP of a nightclub. The microchip is the size of a rice grain and is permanently implanted unless it's surgically removed. Evidently, the little devices can hold an unlimited amount of data on the person. Some parents are beginning to implant these GPS devices in their children. Interesting I think. You think these are the signs of the biblical Revelations by John the Prophet? Most believe this is a sign of the future whether we want to accept it or not. I just thought this was interesting information. There is a wikipedia definition on the Microchip implants [1]. How to check your website?s supplemental index pages
2007-06-02 11:14:00 Just a quick note on how to check what pages of your website is in Google's supplemental index search results. Supplement al index results are not necessarily bad as Matt Cutts has stated but I believe that it does decrease your search rankings overall when you have too many pages indexed as supplemental. Think of that word "supplemental" and it really tells you the Google bot doesn't really want to give it credit and it's only when nothing else comes up will they display the supplemental index pages. In other words, the Google bot doesn't know what to do with it or what to make of the page; however, the attribution of a page indexed as supplemental could be caused by duplicate content which I've discussed as well as so many other seo artists. Herein I just want to show you how to see what pages are indexed as supplemental on your site or any site for that matter. So just type in the Google search bar: site:yourdomain.com -view *** Pretty straight forward. I'll talk about wh... More About: Website , Check , Index , Pages
How to set up Outgoing Server SMTP in Thunderbird
2007-06-01 14:03:00 Just a quick step-by-step tutorial on how to set up your Outgoing Server (SMTP) in Thunderbird . The steps should apply to any Thunderbird version 1.5 to 2.x. 1) Click on the "Tools" the "Account Settings". 2) Scroll down in the left column. Then highlight "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" by left clicking it. [1] 3) Click on the "Add" button on the top right. [2] 4) Type in the appropriate information in the empty fields. The "Server Name" you need to type something like "mail.omusicstudios.com" without the quotes. If you don't know what this is then ask your administrator or ISP tech support. The "User Name" will be something as "username@omusicstudios.com" without quotes. It's usually your email address. Again if you're not certain ask your admin. [3] 5) Then click "OK". Google?s algorithm is ineffective and not as good as you think
2007-06-01 07:35:00 Here is one glaring problem with the Googl e search results. In particular, I posted an article for a client to the article directories. Actually, I posted many articles of my clients that are written by him to the article directories. There is nothing technically wrong with this marketing effort. However, to Google you WILL be penalized for this effort. Case in point, if you search now for the keywords in Google "can a protector replace a trustee?" you will notice that Ezinearticles is given credit for this article though they are not the originating authors of the article. The article is the number three position Trust Protector, Powers and responsibilities of a Trust Protector [1]. If you view this page Google Deftly dealing with duplicate content [2]. Deftly? That's not the correct term. It should be more like "Google Daftly dealing with duplicate content." Another case in point, when one searches for "irrevocable trust" then the fifth result is an article from Ezinearticle her... More About: Good , Effective
Dynamic IP vs Static IP for Shared Hosting Accounts
2007-06-01 07:26:00 I just realized something that can affect your ranking in the search engines. This is the issue of dynamic ip addresses and static ip addresses on shared web hosting accounts. Most of the $8 per month web hosting accounts are shared and the one ip address is used on the box (i.e. the server box). Each server box can have a lot of websites that may be involved in any black hat seo or gray hat seo trickery. So it's best to maintain a clean static ip address dedicated to your website. Your site will have a greater chance of higher rankings. I always believe every little change in white hat seo practices will help your site in search engine rankings so it's best to pay a little bit for this premium. I believe my hosting company bluehost [1] should inform their clients as such. It helps their client make an informed decision and it can increase their sales. So notifying the clients is a win-win situation. It's also important to note but not a major concern that when I called Bluehost... More About: Hosting , Count , Stat , Dynamic , Static
Tie-in Marketing
2007-05-31 02:04:00 I read an article on tie-in marketing from a local, Vancouver publication called "The Office Journal" and written by Robert Ciccone. In it he describes the benefits of tie-in marketing which is essentially tying in or associating what is currently happening now whether that is an event, news, holiday, fad, entertainment or anything else that would be high on the collective consciousness of your audience to your business' products and or services. Tie-in marketing has numerous benefits from generating free publicity, increasing brand awareness, ideas for press releases, creating buzz, displaying uniqueness and differentiation from others and competitors and helps catapult viral marketing for your business. With tie-in marketing, you're in the know, you're hip, you're rad, you're cool, you're chic and you're cutting edge stuff. You can tie your business to events that are happening locally or globally. For instance, Vancouver will be hosting the Olympics in 2010 and there is ... More About: Marketing , Mark
Duplicate Content Issues of Google Bot
2007-05-30 06:42:00 I just thought of a one pretty good reason why posting your articles to your site and submitting the same articles to article directories would be deemed negatively by the Googl e Bot. I wrote about this in Google penalizes sites for duplicate content [1]. If one thinks about it, Google bots are hard at work spidering all pages, parsing its content and determining what's relevant and what's spam or junk to them. This whole process takes up a lot resources of Google and every time it needs to spider duplicate content which entails checking their own database to determine if it's already been posted somewhere else and who is given credit for the article. Google doesn't have an unlimited amount of resources so with this perspective in mind then it's best to post different articles to your site from the articles that will be submitted to article directories. There is nothing wrong with submitting articles to article directories as this is one tried and trued method for increasing ... More About: Issues , Content , Cate
Google Penalizes Sites for Duplicate Content
2007-05-29 13:38:00 I've been running some tests on a client's site because this site (UltraTrust [1]) sometimes jumps to the first page for keywords like "irrevocable trust" and remains there for about 5 days then drops out of the top page or any page for that matter for a two or three days. It eventually climbs back up again but perhaps one day it won't be ranked at all. Other keywords that were once ranked well are also affected. These other keywords are in a similar predicament and have dropped from existence. The entire site has been penalized or, if not penalized, then placed in temporary suspension. So I've been hypothesizing about what the Googl e algorithm is doing. It's a bit odd since we're doing everything correctly. We have been validating all pages (though all the pages have not been validated yet) as Strict XTHML W3C; submitting a press release with targeted keywords (i.e. the press release is seo'd and optimized; submitting a podcast to iTunes and other top podcast directories; s... How to set up an IMAP email in Thunderbird
2007-05-28 13:42:00 This is just a step-by-step tutorial on how to set up an IMAP email account in Thunderbird . This is for version 1.5. Thunderbird is the email client for mozilla. Click on here to download Thunderbird email program [1]. The benefits of IMAP over POP accounts is that it allows you to sync your email sent and receives from multiple computers that you use with an email program like Thunderbird. It's great for business people on the road. I like Thunderbird because I found Outlook 2000 doesn't allow one to create multiple and SEPARATE folders for each individual email whether it's IMAP or POP. As well, there's a known bug that downloads the same email mulltiple times to your Outlook 2000. Outlook 2003 had a problem with IMAP sent emails designated and saved to the "Sent" box of the MAIN email account rather than the "Sent" box of the email account from which you are currently using. In other words, all accounts set up in Outlook 2003 were saving the "Sent" emails to only one "Sent" ... More About: Programming , Email , Under
For Entrepreneurs: Free Scholarship Programs Worth $1947 by Northstar Think
2007-05-26 20:17:00 Hey, to everyone who's interested in building a business or who owns a business. I read this press release from PRWeb [1] and the company, Northstart Thinktank [2] is offering free online video presentations on the secrets to business success. So what's the catch? There really isn't any. There primary goal is to capture your email address by offering you something enticing for free and something that you find is extremely valuable. Who doesn't want to learn more and how to be successful - especially if you enjoy business and have that entrepreneurial spirit in you. There is an important lesson to learn here and more than the presentation. The press release is great and helps with their search engine optimization efforts for online marketing. There are just a couple of things I would have changed here and that is pay the extra $120 to get to the $200 level for the PRWeb press release and make the press release longer like 500 to 700 words in length to describe the primary benef... Has Microsoft Vista?s Firewall Improved Security?
2007-05-26 18:23:00 I read an article by Grant Buckler of CDN [1] title "Microsoft 's hype machine has been at it again." The article questioned the efficacy of the Microsoft's Vista firewall. A good firewall should regulate and monitor both inbound and outbound traffic. This is to ensure that if spyware does manage to sneak through all the other security features then you will want to prevent the spyware from sending out confidential information such as when you type in credit card information to make an online purchase. Vista's firewall was touted as being better than XP's firewall by many of the IT industry analysts and reviewers but Vista's firewall does fall short in one important feature. Though Vista's firewall can block outbound traffic, it will only block what you tell it to block. There is no real logic behind this feature. In other words, if there was some malicious program (i.e. spyware) on your computer already then wouldn't you simply delete the program rather than inform Vista's... How to Get a Professional Website up Fast?
2007-05-25 03:14:00 One of my clients needs a website up fast since she's doing some promotions on a singing contest possibly in conjunction with a major radio station here in Vancouver, BC. I knew the fastest way to get a professional site up for her and to begin a solid foundation for search engine optimization coding in place was to use a template-based system. I've had to do this for one of my other clients who needed a golf site. What I do is purchase a template from Monster Template.com [1] for $50 to $100 or so. I realize it's one of those generic templates and you may think that many people will think it's a template. It's true. I can't deny that people MAY think that but I believe most people will not be able to tell that you purchased some generic template from MonsterTemplate. All they see is a nicely designed website. When I had to create a website for the my golf client, his client's told him that the site looks cool. I think the template is okay and I believe it should still be m... Confidential Information by Trojan Threats Rose Dramatically for 2006 and R
2007-05-24 05:29:00 I just read an article from CDN [1] about Internet security rising and the battle against hackers and criminals is far from being won. Dean Turner, the executive editor for the Global Internet Security report and who works at Symantec, notes in his 120-page report that threats to confidential information has risen from 48 percent from the same previous period. Threats of confidential information rose to 66 percent of the top 50 malicious code. Threats that included access to usernames, passwords sharply inclined to 62 percent for the second half of 2006 which is a 38 percent increase from the first half of the year. It's noted that it's the first time that Symantec was able to pinpoint the active trading of stolen confidential information on the underground economy servers. The criminals sold information such as credit cards, social security numbers, email addresses and even debit card pin numbers. Problem with Width Formatting in IE WP-Syntax Wordpress Plugin
2007-05-23 03:07:00 Just a quick fix on how to fix the width formatting problem in Internet Explorer 6.x for the Word press plugin WP-Syntax [1] by Ryan McGeary. In case you didn't know what this plugin functions as let me explain briefly. It's simply a code highlighter used to colour code the syntax of a programming language using the GeSHi [2] (Generic Syntax Highlighter) code. I like this Wordpress plugin but everytime when I cut and pasted code that extended past 475 pixels wide or greater the main column pushed the right column further right which resulted in a malformed layout. So here is the quick and dirty step-by-step instructions to fix this problem. I'm using WP-Syntax 0.5.2 so I don't know if this has been addressed yet. If not then read on. 1) Click on the "Presentation" tab then "Theme Editor" tab. Then click on the link "Stylesheet" located in the right column. I like to edit in my IDE so, if this is the case, then your stylesheet.css file will be located the folder "wp-content hem... More About: Plugin , Problem , Plug
Advertising on Video Games network - Is this your target market?
2007-05-19 17:38:00 I just read a posting about a different type of advertising method that is deemed a more untraditional channel. The press release BannerGame.com: Expanding the Reach of Advertisers through Online Gaming Platforms [1] mentions Bannergame.com as offering advertising space on one of their popular games called "Be the Monkey." In the game, you can upload pictures of yourself or of your friend's or family member's photos and place them on the head of monkey. It seems funny though I haven't played the game myself personally. This new form of advertising is called Advergaming [2] as defined on Wikipedia. I believe there is space for this form of advertising. If you think about advergaming advertising then you should ask yourself, as the business owner, the target audience for the particular game in question you wish to advertise on. Learn Your Marketing Mistakes Fast to Increase Sales
2007-05-18 19:09:00 I've been corresponding with someone for a few months now and I've been attempting to teach him the importance of making your mistakes quickly, learning from it and then instituting new strategies of marketing or, in short, just try new ideas to market your product. In particular this person has a long sales process and, perhaps, the long sales doesn't apply to you but this concept of learning your mistakes fast and allowing the mistakes to have a least amount of impact on your time and money (i.e. the bottomline) is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL. I believe most business owners and entrepreneurs make this devastating mistake and they stubbornly adhere to their "old" ways of doing things and not learn. It's just like life. Your obviously going to make mistakes in life. That's just life. If you never learn from your mistakes and some, I suppose, don't learn from them or continually make the same mistakes then you're in for a very long bumpy ride. Supreme Court Ruling Could Invalidate Patents
2007-05-17 13:03:00 In a yesterday blog I spoke about Microsoft's potential lawsuits against the Linux Software Foundation for patent infringements [1]. Hugo Ahlquist commented on the blog and the ramifications to such lawsuits could lead to "Patent Armageddon unleashed by IBM to having many or all the patents invalidated as obvious under the recent SCOTUS decision." Interestingly, I didn't know about the recent SCOTUS decisions on the ruling of invalidating patents. Invalidating patents opens a whole new can of worms. The article by Chris Murphy on May 2, 2007 title Supreme Court ruling fallout: fewer patents, more litigation? [2] points out the Supreme Court's ruling that granted patents are only presumptions and can be contested at any time, consequently, invalidating the patent or reducing the efficacy and strength of the patent. He continues to explain in the article that prior art [3] which, as defined in Wikipedia and according to patent law, "constitutes all information that has been made ... More About: Patents , Ruling
Microsoft to Sue Linux Open-Source Software for Patent Violations
2007-05-16 17:42:00 In today's headline, I just read a report that Microsoft may in the as-of-yet undetermined future launch a lawsuit for patent infringement against OSS establishments. By the way, OSS stands for Open -Source Software . Rob Enderle, a well-respected fellow in the IT community and who sits on the advisory council for major corporations such as IBM, Toshiba, AMD, HP, Dell, Philips, and the Trusted Computing Group, comments in his blog [1] that the "Linux Foundation as a proxy for Linux, IBM as the largest non-licensed supplier (and contributor) to Linux, and Red Hat as the most powerful branded Linux distribution owner" are the most likely targets for Microsoft's lawsuits. He quickly dismisses the idea the Linux Foundation will be one of Microsoft's top target based on the reasoning that the Linux Foundation has really no financial rewards if the case is favourably won for Microsoft and the outcry and support by the OSS community could have negative repercussions and consequences not ... Block Ip Address with Htaccess file - Server Admin
2007-05-16 11:40:00 I posted a how-to guide on blocking referral websites using the htaccess file [1]. But I've found for my Free Personals [2] that this wasn't enough to stop the culprits who are causing my max connections to be reached and, consequenlty, causing my server to crash and I might add quite frequently. How to Add Anchor Text in PRWeb press releases - SEO
2007-05-16 10:03:00 This is a quick tutorial on how add anchor text specifically applied to PRWeb press releases. In order to specify your own anchor text you need to contribute $200 and above. Since my last press release I paid for the $120 for the Social Media Visibility package and the Standard Podcast which was $100 I was allowed to add my own anchor text. Furthermore, I added many keywords in the press release which are the ones I was targeting for then used those keywords in my anchor text. The press release was longer than probably the average but it was suitable and also allowed me to add in up to seven keywords of anchor text and, thus, seven inbound links from very credible sources - namely, PRWeb, all sites in the eMedia distribution network, Yahoo news and Google news. You're allowed one backlink every 100 words. These are the big three that I know of and will help in your SEO efforts.
