Paramount?s 2008 is off to a spectacular start. The J.J. Abrams-produced Cloverfield has delivered a monster opening day of an estimated $18.25M, and it will easily coast to both the All-Time January 3-Day record and the All-Time 4-Day MLK weekend record. The Friday number is a tough call because there?s no clear answer about where Paramount will add Thursday post-midnight sneak preview business. That means that there?s a slightly larger margin of error in my Early Friday Estimate than usual. There will almost certainly be a dip in business Friday-to-Saturday, maybe as much as 15%. Even with that sort of ?front-loading,? this $25M-budgeted internet-driven phenomenon will likely reach a staggering 3-day of $48M, easily becoming the best January opening ever. OFFICIAL TRAILER WILL BE DEBUTING ONLINE TODAYThere have been reports that audiences seeing Cloverfield this weekend are going wild for the attached Star Trek teaser trailer, but my screening was dead quiet. And I can?t tell whether the mere four comments /Film received on our post about the bootleg version being on YouTube (still there) are a sign of disinterest, mild disappointment or reservation for the official version. Up until yesterday, I had a bad feeling about J.J. Abrams?s mega-budgeted December vision for Trek. The casting has been all over the place, and the filmmakers? hardcore need to include Leonard Nimoy and as much canon as possible reminded me of the early warning signs for Superman Returns. But the trailer struck a cord with me. The steady shot on the U.S.S. PC Piracy Levels "Astounding" Say Call Of Duty 4 Devloper

Infinity Ward's community manager muses, "they wonder why people don't make PC games any more." Infinity Ward would like to sniper pirates "We pulled some disturbing numbers this past week about the amount of PC players currently playing [Call of Duty 4] Multiplayer (which was fantastic)," writes Robert Bowling, on the game's community blog. "What wasn't fantastic was the percentage of those numbers who were playing on stolen copies of the game." "The amount of people who pirate PC games is astounding," he added. "It blows me away that people are willing to steal games (or anything) simply because it's not physical or it's on the safety of the internet to do." PC games sales have decreased in recent years due to rampant piracy of software and other digital goods over internet sharing sites.

The NPD Group has released its numbers for console and software sales for both December and 2007 as a whole. The good news is that 2007 was a huge year for gaming: sales are up 43 percent from 2006, with $17.94 billion in sales in 2007 compared to $12.53 billion in 2006. "While hardware sales realized the greatest percentage growth over 2006 due to the closely scrutinized console hardware transition, each category under the video games industry umbrella reached their own 'personal bests' in terms of annual sales," NPD analyst Anita Frazier wrote. Sony BMG will start selling music downloads in the copy-protection-free MP3 format later this month in North America, as even the last holdout among the major record labels crumbled to the growing trend.Sony BMG Music Entertainment said in a statement that some digital albums will be available through a new download service called Platinum MusicPass starting Jan. 15 in the U.S. and late January in Canada.A Sony Corp. official in Tokyo confirmed the company's move toward the MP3 format in the U.S. but said similar moves aren't in the works in Japan and elsewhere. Currently they're just in the early stages of primary voting, but, already, Mrs. Clinton has taken a big hit by losing in Iowa.
