If We Make It Through December
2007-11-22 07:10:00
Like any really good country song should be, this one is sad–a family going through a tough time and planning on trying their luck somewhere else. The dad just “got laid off down at the factory”, and his young daughter doesn’t understand that things are going to be tight this Christmas and that Dad is ...

Twelve Days of Classic Country Christmas
2007-11-20 16:51:00
For the holidays I thought I’d write about 12 of my favorite Classic Country Christmas songs.  I was going to do this anyway, and then I found this group writing project sponsored by Litemind that ties in really well with it.  I’ll go ahead and post the whole list now, and then go into each ...

Hee Haw Complete DVD Set
2007-11-18 19:24:00
I think this is a really cool gift idea (anyone want to buy it for me?). I think I’m going to get this for my folks for Christmas since they are big Hee Haw fans. I remember watching it every Saturday at my grandparents’ house. Every now and then I’ll catch an ...

Kris Kristofferson on Austin City Limits
2007-11-14 01:46:00
I found this video of Kris Kristofferson on Austin City Limits over the weekend. “Here Comes That Rainbow Again” isn’t one of Kris’s better known songs, but it’s a good ‘un. One thing I have always liked about the way Kristofferson writes is that it is so real and natural.  There is a particular line in this song that is a great example.  When the kids tell the waitress that they only have a penny between them she replies, “Them’s two for a penny.”  She doesn’t say, “Those are two for a penny,” or “two for a penny.”  That’s not what a waitress in an Oklahoma roadside cafe would say.  She’d use the word “them’s” because that’s what would naturally roll off of her tongue.  The truck driver also says, “them candies ain’t two for a penny.”  Natural. I also love the way he uses things that everyone can relate to and the ideas they convey.   &...

Johnny Lee ? Rollin? Lonely
2007-11-09 17:47:00
It’s been happening to me a lot lately that I hear a song I’d completely forgotten about.  Usually it’s something that I’d never remember in a million years if someone else didn’t play it for me.  It’s happening mostly when listening to the America station on XM radio.  The other day I heard Johnny Lee’s ...

Get Well Soon Roseanne Cash
2007-11-09 14:24:00
The Nashville Business Journal is reporting that Roseanne Cash will undergo brain surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.  Wishing her well, and looking forward to her new album. I can remember a specific trip I took to Florida with my grandparents as a kid.  It seemed like “Seven Year Ache” was played every ...

Hank Thompson (1925-2007)
2007-11-08 22:44:00
Man, has it been a rough couple of weeks.  Yet another classic country legend has succumbed to lung cancer.  There is this nice writeup about Mr. Thompons in The Tennessean that gives a pretty extensive history of his life.  I think this says a lot about the kind of guy Hank Thompson was… Mr. Thompson requested a ...

Cal Smith ? The Lord Knows I?m Drinking
2007-11-05 04:09:00
Back when I was in college in the early 90s there was a great radio station my roommate and I would listen to when we had late night study sessions. They played good classic country mixed in with newer stuff all day, but at night they’d play full albums and had no commercials and ...

Porter Wagoner (1927-2007)
2007-10-29 12:53:00
Porter Wagoner has lost his battle with lung cancer.  This article in the Washington Post gives a summation of his career and also points out that Mr. Wagoner did a lot of things that were outside the box of Nashville music establishment like inviting James Brown to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and producting a ...

George Strait Releasing EVEN MORE Hits
2007-10-26 01:39:00
George Strait is releasing yet another greatest hits collection–even more hits (22 more). His release of 50 Number Ones (an amazing feat) apparently didn’t include several songs that are fan favorites even though they may not have scored number one on the charts. On top of that, not all the songs were included ...

Porter Wagoner Has Lung Cancer
2007-10-22 05:06:00
Grand Ole Opry star Porter Wagoner ’s publicist has announced that the singer has lung cancer and is in serious condition.  Our thoughts are with him and his family during this difficult time. When I was in kindergarten, our school did a program featuring different types of music.  Our class had country music, and we all had to dress up like a famous country star and lip synch a song for the program.  I had to be Porter Wagoner and, entertainer that I am, stood perfectly still and watched the little girl dressed  up as Dolly Parton dance around during our “duet”.

I Believe In You Is Timeless
2007-10-21 05:12:00
“I Believe in You” has always been one of my favorite Don Williams songs for lots of reasons. I love the little guitar run at the beginning, and I love the message. This is one of the best classic country songs you could ever play at a wedding. It’s nice and ...

My Favorite Ray Stevens Song
2007-10-16 18:59:00
Driving into work this morning, there was nothing good on the radio, and I was too lazy to change CDs in my player.  I’ve been listening to Robert Earl Keen Live at the Ryman for weeks now.  Instead, I just turned the radio off and started singing to myself.  Goofy?  Yes.  But I do it ...

Ray Price ? American Original
2007-10-16 04:13:00
I go through phases with CDs and mixes. Right now I’m on a big Ray Price kick. The only Ray Price album I have is “American Origin al s”, which is a greatest hits album. I usually end up listening to “For the Good Times” at least three times per listen, partly because I’m ...
Finally! iTunes Mixes Available Here
2007-10-11 19:20:00
One of my reasons for starting this blog was that my friends ask me questions about classic country music all the time.  Usually they just want to know who sang a song, or want some recommendations for songs from an artists.  I have a pretty nice classic country music collection, and they used to ask ...

Bob Wills is Still the King
2007-10-03 05:55:00
I was just listening to the live version of Waylon Jennings ‘ tribute to Bob Wills — “Bob Wills is Still the King ”.  Although it isn’t exactly one of Waylon’s best written songs, it’s one of my favorites.  And that’s saying a lot because I LOVE Waylon Jennings. My favorite thing about this song is that it ...

Amazon Launches MP3 Download Service
2007-09-26 20:52:00
I’m really excited about this service. Unlike iTunes, Amazon ’s service does not have encoding on the files that limits you to playing the songs on an iPod. So ANY mp3 player will work fine. I’ll be changing over all of the links to songs here so that they can be downloaded through Amazon. Additionally, Amazon has ...

Texas National Anthem Voting
2007-09-21 18:39:00
Patrick at ThisIsTexas Music has an article about Lone Star beer’s contest to select an unofficial National Anthem of Texas. He has all the nominees listed on his site, but I figured I’d pick out a few of my favorites of the classics.  I’m not a Texan, so I don’t know if my vote counts.. Waltz Across Texas ...

The Cape
2007-09-19 06:22:00
I heard another good song today that I haven’t heard in a long time–The Cape , by Guy Clark . If you haven’t heard Steve Earl, Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark Together at the Bluebird Cafe, it is a must have…buy it today.  The stories these guys tell alone are worth the price of admission.  ...
Loving Her Was Easier Chords
2007-09-13 04:40:00
Today I heard Tompall Glaser’s version of Loving Her Was Easier Than Anything I’ll Ever Do Again, and I figured I’d post the chords to is since it is one of my favorite songs. This version is different than Kris Kristofferson’s in that the chord progressions are a little different. Download this song on ...

Mr. Shorty ? Marty Robbins
2007-09-09 16:18:00
This is one of my all time favorite story songs.  The cool thing about Marty Robb ins’s story songs is that they all sound just like western movies.  In this one, a small cowboy is getting picked on in a saloon by another cowboy who insists on calling him “Shorty”.  “Shorty” informs the man quickly that ...

Tammy Wynette ? Queen of Pain
2007-09-08 22:17:00
I’ve never been that big of a Tammy Wynette fan, but I recently put her box set into my mix on my iPod. The other day I was out running, and about the time it really started to hurt, “I Don’t Want to Play House” came on my mix. All of a sudden, ...

Don Williams Lord I Hope This Day is Good
2007-09-07 20:17:00
I think there are quite a few people who aren’t sure exactly what it is about classic country music that makes it so much better than modern country.  There is definitely something different there, but they aren’t sure what it is.  I have a pretty good idea–honesty and believability.  Honesty is something that everyone can ...

Great Topic
2007-08-29 19:05:00
There’s a discussion going on MusicCityBloggers about the saddest country songs ever.  A lot of the people commenting are obviously pretty new to country music, only naming songs that have been released in the last 20 years or so.  To me, the list begins and ends with “I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry” by Hank ...

Kenny Rogers ? Recognize the Good Stuff
2007-08-21 21:07:00
Driving to work the other day I heard “Ruby” by Kenny Rogers , which I think is one of his best songs along with “You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille”.  It seems to happen pretty often in country music that the artist’s best songs are not his/her most famous.  For Kenny Rogers, “The ...

It Was on Every Mix CD I Ever Made
2007-08-16 21:22:00
Good Lovin’ (Makes it Right) by Tammy Wynette. At least every one I ever made for a girl.  I have a pretty big music collection with a lot more than just country music in it.  Of course, girls that I used to date would want me to make mix CDs for them with all types of music.  ...

Rodeo Songs
2007-08-07 23:31:00
I love ‘em!  I was talking to a buddy at work today about our favorite rodeo songs, and I actually can’t think of a rodeo song I don’t like.  I would have a hard time ranking my favorites in order, at least after the one I’d call the best–”Amarillo by Morning” by George Strait–remember, this blog is mostly about songs that were big on the radio: I ain’t got a dime, but what I got is mine I ain’t rich, but Lord, I’m free “Beaches of Cheyenne”, “Rodeo ”, “Wild Horses”, and “Much Too Young to Feel This Damn Old” by Garth Brooks are all up there for me as well.  Then I’d have to go back to George Strait for “I Can Still Make Cheyenne”. Now that the radio is of the way, let’s be honest.  I could have titled this post “Rodeo Songs ”, written the words “Chris LeDoux” in the body, and left it at that.  I’ll take his versi...

Songs and Chords, Hey Patrick!
2007-08-06 21:45:00
Yesterday a new subscriber, Patrick , left a comment asking how he could get access to the chords for classic country songs here, and just this morning I was telling a friend that I need to come up with a way for readers to get the chords to the songs they’d like.  I didn’t read his comment until this afternoon, so it’s pretty ironic that we were basically thinking the same thing. What I came up with was a request system.  I’ve seen that lots of people have been finding this site by searching for chords to songs.  So let’s start with Patrick…post a comment with a few songs you’d like the chords to, and I’ll do my best to get them posted up here for you.  I’ll post the actual chords (no tablature) and just enough lyrics so you can get the idea without having to infringe on the artists’ rights. For now, we can just do it through comments.  I’m working on a (prettier) design for the site, and when that is launched I...

Funniest Country Song About Breaking Up
2007-08-04 17:20:00
Although he is a newer country artists, I like a lot of what I’ve heard from Brad Paisley .  He’s a great musician and writes all of his own stuff.  I’ve always like the funny country songs like some of the ones he writes-”Me Neither”, “The Fishing Song ”, etc.–although I’m not a big fan of the ...

Kris Kristofferson on GAC
2007-08-02 18:33:00
I was flipping through channels the other night and caught a GAC special with Kris Kristofferson.  I don’t usually watch GAC, but it seemed like this show was supposed to be a sit down with the artist and review of their videos.  I don’t know of any Kris Kristofferson videos (except for live stuff), so ...
