Cafe del mar

When we went for a dinner last night to my fiance's sister's place, I heard some chilled-out House music playing in the background on the PC of my fiance's bro-in-law. Out of curiousity I asked him what he was playing, and he said it's a compilation called Cafe del Mar. He had pretty much every compilation of their Chill House mixes.Apparently Cafe del Mar is a real bar in Ibiza, built in 1980, perfectly located near the beach where you can watch the sunset every night, in beautiful scenery, whilst listening to a DJ play very appropriate, chilled-out House music in the background. The bar became popular mainly because of the Chill House compilations released annually, since 1994.I had a look at the track-listing of the mix that was playing and was surprised to find some really good artists, including one of my favourite tracks at the moment - Trust Me by JT Donaldson. Mark Farina MOS Interview - Video

Here's an interview with Mark Farina for the Ministry of Sound CD launch. He talks about how he started DJing at the age of 15 or 16, by hanging around in the DJ booth of a club DJ. He also says how Chicago is an open House genre, which includes minimal, techy, etc., and about how he likes to include a bit of old, a bit of new, something different, deep and some classics in his set, while keeping a good vibe happening throughout. Starting Your Own Bar?

So how can someone go about starting their own bar? I had a look around out of curiousity, and found that there are places that can be rented for around AU$60K per year in the CBD for use as bars. Then you'll need a liquor license to be able to serve alcohol, which I think costs around AU$1,300. After that you'll need to get spend on making the bar look appropriate, with couches, lights, DJ equipment, etc. Then finally you can start thinking about hiring staff, getting the promoters and DJs in and running a few nights!Well at least that's what I think is needed. I'm sure there are hidden difficulties in there that only a bar owner would know! It would be cool to own a bar though -- get a few friends together so you can afford the rent, run your own nights to begin with, and DJ as much as you want! But you'd want to have some very close friends as partners -- you don't want to lose your friendship over business issues! Family members would make better partners I think.

Beach Party Melbourne!

It's that time once again for the yearly beach party, organised by one of the biggest house-heads in Melbourne , Mr. Jules -- Mike Jules.The extravaganza will be held on 16th December and has some of Melbourne's finest House DJs lined up, including Matt Promo who recently broke the world record for the longest DJ set (87 hours!). Mint Nightclub Brighton

Mint is a very classy and popular bar/nightclub located on the busy Church Street in Bright on . I had the pleasure of playing there last night, and I found myself wondering why I had never been there before. From what I hear from my bro. and his friends, Fridays and Saturdays @ Mint are a full house. For a Wednesday, last night wasn't too bad with a good 50 or so people by 10.30PM. By the time I left at 11.30 it looked like the party was just getting started.I can see why some of Australia's best DJs (e.g. John Course, Grant Smillie) have played at Mint -- they've got a top-of-the-range DJ setup, including 2xCDJ1000s, 2xTechnics 1200s with Ortofon DJ-S/E carts, a DJM3000 and even a separate 10-or-so band equalizer for that extra control! The DJ booth, like the club, has got plenty of space, and the powerful monitor speaker sits on a stylish silver barrel. March 2006 Demo Up!

I've finally created a demo after a long silence! The main motivation was because I had to give Inck Lounge a few copies for them to distribute. The demo can be downloaded from the bottom of this page.The new demo is a bit different to the others, as I've put in a few deep tracks around the twenty minute mark, which some may actually think of as an anti-climax. But I think after this "deep break" I managed to raise it up to quite an upbeat (maybe even a tad commercial) track, after which I played a few more funky and chunky tunes before shifting to low gear and finishing it off with a few jazzy tunes.Overall, I think some of the mixes could have been better (e.g. the mix into the Jack Childs track), but in general I'm happy with this one.

There's a huge sale on at SubStra ta with all items at least 50% off, so I made full use of it. I bought 13 tracks for $110 (including registered post shipping), which comes upto AU$8.50 per record! It's a big weekend coming up, with Stellar Bar veteran Clint Hargreaves gracing the decks once more, in what will surely be a tear-jerking set (in a good way of course)! Clint was the first person to start making Stellar Bar the chill-out venue of choice, after which myself (for a short time), Mike Jules and the whole house party crew joined in to make Stellar Bar the house capital of the CBD!On Sunday , our lounging session at Hush Bar will also be big, with DJ Renee Kuperman coming down all the way from Sydney with a (UDG) bag full of tricks! This is my very first House track, made with GarageBand on the Mac, using the samples, drums, etc. provided in the original version of GarageBand. I Quit!

Last night was my last set at Hush, as I decided to quit. The owner was a bit too much to handle. So although the rest of the staff (management & bar staff) were pretty cool, there's no point in staying there as I really can't put up with the owner.Besides deciding to quit an hour or so into my set, the remaining 4 hours of my set wasn't too bad really. There were quite a few people at the bar and most of them were chatting and listening to some good House music. My bro. and quite a few of his friends came over too, so it was a nice vibe. Later I started getting a few RnB and commercial House requests, and since it was my last gig there, I decided to give them what they wanted!! Chuck Love @ Bar Altitude!

One of my most recent faves Chuck Love will be hitting the decks at Bar Altitude in the CBD, on Nov. 24th. Although he's a great producer with some of his tracks (e.g. Soul Symphony and Funky Ass Beat) getting plenty of air-time during my sets, I hear he's equally impressive as a DJ, playing not only on the turntables but also on guitar, flute, trumpet, and a keyboard, all without missing a beat!! I've only heard good things about Mr. Love, so although I'd also love to see Derrick Carter this weekend, considering my financial status at the moment, I think I'll check out Chuck Love instead. New Mix -- Soul @ Mint

I've finally managed to get myself to make a new mix after months and months. I'm calling it the Soul at Mint mix, as it was made especially for an Open Decks competition I'm playing at tomorrow (Wed) night, at Mint Nightclub in Brighton. Winner of the comp. gets residency and record vouchers! There's some tough competition though -- the experienced DJ Pound (dj oldfart on ITM) will be playing right after me, and I'm sure there's some other ITM DJs (probably even Mike Jules) that are playing in the coming weeks. But even if I don't win, it's at least it's another venue to add to my list of conquered venues!Anyway, back to my mix. Exporting Blogger to ITM!

ITM provides a free blog for members, so I decided to do something similar to what I did when I exported www.djluvvy.net to Myspace. Unlike Myspace, the ITM blog template allows JavaScript, Frames and PHP, so the process of integrating www.djluvvy.net into my ITM blog was much easier.Basically, I found an awesome site called RSS-Info which asks you to type in your RSS feed URL, and it then generates an RSS feed reader in the language of your choice (i.e. JavaScript, PHP or iFrames). You then copy and paste the code to your ITM blog template (or any website), and you get live RSS feeds delivered directly to your website!! So now, my ITM blog gets content directly from www.djluvvy.net. You can even customise the look and feel of your RSS feed so it matches your website/blog. A DJ I met at Stellar Bar a couple of months ago (see the video in the Videos section) called Will iam, happens to be a regular at Hideout Bar (pics from their website on the left) in Singapore, where I will (hopefully) be playing on my next visit to Singapore. William randomly happened to walk into Stellar Bar, and after introducing himself to the boys at the Friday night House Party, scored himself a gig on the same night (he used someone elses records).I had a chat with William that night and found that he comes down to Melbourne every couple of months, and that he plays at Hideout pretty often. Recently on doing a search for Hideout, I found that William belongs to a House group called Radiance in Singapore, and that they play at some of the coolest bars/clubs there.
