Hi folks! Some of you may have noticed that this blog has been inactive for some time now. Unfortunately I have stopped all DJ-related activities for the time being, until I finish my studies. I will be back in full swing as soon as soon as I finish! So until then, take it easy, and keep groovin'!Luvvy
55 Bulk Lot of Disco & House Music 12" Vinyl Records For Sale!
2007-03-20 16:16:00
I'm selling of my older Disco/House Vinyl collection. These are great to add to an 80's collection, to go with other 80's dance classics. Some of these records are early Chicago House tracks (e.g. [Liz Torres feat.C & J] [Face It] [State Street] [1987]), and some others are original disco (e.g. [Boney M] [Kalimba De Luna] [Hansa] [1984]). I haven't played them for a long time, but they were all in good condition the last time I played them. Here's the eBay advertisement:No Reserve auction for 56 Disco and House Vinyl Records, with a $0.10 starting bid!!Most records are from the late 80's and most records are Disco with some being House tracks.Records are in average to good playable condition. Most of them are in their original record covers and the rest are in sleeves or plastic covers.Perfect for a DJ/mobile DJ looking to expand their collection, as key and BPM information is provided on most record that have covers. Also, perfect to add to an existing 80's music collection f...

Myspace Slideshow on Blogger
2007-03-20 10:18:00
I thought it would be cool to have a small slideshow with flyers of my past gigs, displayed on my blog. Since I've already got a slideshow set up for my Myspace page, I simply copied and pasted the same code into my blogger template. It turned out to be a good idea, as it makes my blog look a bit more interactive, as you can see (if you're using IE) on the top left! It could potentially also distract readers though, as they'd see something moving in the top left corner, while they're trying to read a post!I'm sure there are other better services that offer free slideshows that can be integrated into webpages/blogs, but by having the Myspace slideshow, you can show the same slideshow on both your blog and Myspace. So any changes to your slideshow on Myspace will also take effect on your blog.So that's one more way in which Myspace can be integrated with blogger! I've posted a couple of more integration tips in some of my previous posts (e.g. see here, and here).

DJing with a full suit?
2007-03-19 01:33:00
Last weekend Mike Jules was playing at Lustre Lounge on the Saturday night, so I went over at around 1am which is the usual time they close (at least on Fridays) to see how things were going. I was happy to see that Mike was having fun; he was not just DJing but also picking up girls (or rather, the girls picking him up!). The crowd was loving his music too.Since I was there straight after a wedding, I was in a full suit (although I had loosened the tie), so I felt a bit awkward walking into the bar where I'm usually dressed very casually. Then it turned out that the bar was going to be open until 2am (since there was enough of a crowd), so I decided to DJ for an hour until they closed; putting myself into an even more awkward position! So there I was playing House music with a full suit. At one point the bouncer walked up to me and said he's never seen such a well dressed DJ! (Although I assured him that I'm rarely that well dressed; in fact, I'm rarely even dressed appropriate...

Best Places to Leave Flyers in CBD
2007-03-16 01:21:00
If you've got a House event happening somewhere in the CBD, here's my list of the most appropriate places to leave flyers. I'll be adding to this list as I find new places.1) HMV Bourke St. will target most of the general music loving community. If the location for placing flyers is still on the top floor which is the House/RnB section, even better! (the RnB crowd wouldn't be interested in a House night anyway).2) Central Station off Elizabeth St. will target mostly DJs. Probably not as effective as HMV for flyer placement.3) RMIT Swanston, Building 10 Level 4 Cafe well this is appropriate for me because I study at RMIT. But this place is very busy, and the coffee shop is the busiest. They've already got a lot of flyers for different events placed on the coffee shop's counter, so they seem to be OK with anyone leaving flyers. This will target mostly students, of course.4) Melbourne Central haven't found a place to leave flyers yet.5) QV Cnr Swanston and Lonsdale haven't foun...

Flyer Printing at 13c Per Print?
2007-03-14 08:31:00
Compared to how much we've payed in the past to get flyers printed, 13 cents per print is a bargain. The idea is to get the flyer to be of the ratio 1:1.5 so that they can be fitted into a 4" x 6" (i.e. 10cm x 15cm) photo. Basically, you then get the flyers printed as photos, from the cheapest photo printing place. The cheapest I've found so far for photo printing is 13 cents per photo, from GetDigital. Sending something off to print via GetDigital is very easy; log in to GetDigital, upload the picture, resize or crop or do any of the basic effects, and then choose a quantity and send it off to print! They usually print it on the same day, and you can collect it from the nearest pharmacy registered with them (my closest pharmacy registered with them was a 10 min walk) within two working days.I used GetDigital to print 310 flyers for Laidback @ Lustre Lounge and it worked great. There was a small problem though; the small sample they showed online was not exactly what the end prod...

Friday Nights @ Lustre Lounge
2007-03-13 12:35:00
DJ Pound and I will be taking on early Frida y nights at Lust re Lounge -- 7pm - 10pm from this Friday onwards. From 10pm DJ Temba will take over until closing time.Friday has currently got some great promotion happening, where you get one round of free drinks on presenting a "corporate card". The offer is applicable for groups of 5 or more people, before 7pm. What better way to start the night! If 7pm is too early, they've also got drink specials on until 9pm, and will start serving complimentary finger food if it gets busy enough. If anyone's interested in a corporate card, let me know and I'll send it to you. Or you can come over on a Thursday to our "Laidback" night and get a card off me.

Miles Maeda Madness!!
2007-03-12 05:12:00
What a night!! I had planned to leave early but couldn't -- he just kept me going. There was some awesome variety in his set (deep, techy, jazzy, 'summery', 'hip-hoppy', 'jackin'...) and he even somehow managed to keep the dancefloor going with "Greenskeepers -- On The Line (Farina Remix)", which until last night I had thought would only do well as a chill-out track! It was good to hear some of the popular stuff too (e.g. the Hodges track with Collette vocals). He even threw in some good remixes that I enjoyed ('Funky Rhythm', 'Pump up the jam'). Most importantly, it was good to see that Mile s is such a down-to-earth and friendly guy -- he was walking around chatting to random people in the crowd! The event was not overcrowded and there was a big fan that helped us keep going and going and going on the dancefloor. The venue (Tramp off Highlander Lane in the city -- very hidden and very "underground") and the sound system were fantastic. The crowd was friendly and just there...

Miles Maeda in Melbourne!
2007-03-08 22:34:01
Yup, the man compared to Derrick Carter at the moment will be playing at Tramp in the CBD on the labour day eve weekend. This event is a first for HoolaHoop -- check out the flyer for venue details and ticket prices!! Hoolahoop promises to bring down Jason Hodges sometime soon, which I'll try my best to make it to. This Mile s Maeda gig looks a go-er too.

Laidback @ Lustre Lounge has taken off!!
2007-03-08 22:34:01
We wanted people to come chill out at our new night at Lust re Lounge , and that's exactly what they did. There were people there from start to finish, and the bar tender said it was busy for a Thursday night. Not bad for our opening night! But I must admit, the people who came were there either there for the good music, or out of coincidence, because we hadn't had the time to do enough promotion to make it a much busier Thursday night than usual. There were 6 people I knew though (including 3 from ITM).So, overall it was a very good start to our Laidback @ Lustre! With bit more promotion and time, we should be able to make it a full house on Thursdays.

Laidback @ Lustre Lounge ready for take off...
2007-03-08 22:34:01
I printed about 30 good quality flyers (10x15cm) for Lust re Lounge to hand out to their patrons, gave Lustre Lounge an A3 flyer to display at their entrance on Centre Place (off Flinders Lane), checked out the DJ equipment, and so now we're all set to start this Thursday! To add to the excitement, they've got a new mixer and new speakers, so can't wait to get my hands and ears on those.By the looks of it, 5pm seems to be a good time to start -- right in time to tempt some of the corporate crowd to come to Lustre, instead of making their way home. Centre Place is very busy at 5pm with people rushing to get to Flinders Station. Can't wait...

New Mark Farina Video
2007-03-08 22:34:01
Here's a recent Mark Farina video of him playing "Dream Machine" at a club in Brazil, which seems to have been a request (via a big sign held up) by some people in the crowd. I've never seen him (live or on video) dancing as much as he does in this video!

RMIT Orientation (Bourke St. Campus)
2007-03-08 22:34:01
The Bourke St. Orient ation was held on the fourth floor of the Bourke St. building, so the location in itself was a unique experience for me! The fourth floor had a 'courtyard', which was like a rooftop area surrounded by buildings, and the food stalls and information stalls were all somehow nicely arranged around the courtyard so that people had enough space to move around. Not a lot of people turned up, but there were enough people for an enjoyable set.The DJ equipment and the PA system was provided by Tim Nixon, a Future DJ 2003 Victorian finalist from Swinburne Uni, who now runs his own mobile DJing/equipment hiring business. The speakers were Opera Live, and I think they had 300W RMS of power. The rest of the equipment were 2 x Technics turntables, 2 x CDJ200s, and a DJM 500 mixer. The speakers were too powerful for that enclosed space though, so we couldn't put it to full use!Unfortunately, I didn't get to play at the City Orienta tion, which I was really looking forward to...

Laidback @ Lustre Lounge
2007-03-08 22:34:01
Myself and DJ Pound will be spinning some laid back House at the posh and intimate venue Lust re Lounge , on Flinders Lane, every Thursday 5pm - 9pm. Lustre Lounge is a nice little bar, with a nice little balcony overlooking Flinders Lane, and they're renowned for their cocktails, and great selection of cigars! The timing of the event will be perfect for the office crowd wanting to cut back and relax after a long day at work. What better way to sip on quality cocktails on the balcony than by listening to some quality house music!

How stupid can I get?
2007-02-27 22:31:01
Apparently the manager of the whole RMIT Village -- who was present at my last week's gig -- was happy with the music, and happy with the fact that I listened to him when he asked me to turn the volume down! As a result, I've scored myself another gig at the Social Bar and Cafe tomorrow, but this time for about 200 students.OK so how does that make me stupid? Well, my stupidity arises as a result of me, again, needing to carry my two turntables instead of CD players, and two crates of Vinyl with a total about 130 records instead of a CD folder. As if that's wasn't heavy enough, I've got 70kgs worth of speakers to carry -- the same Behringer B300s I rented last week!!Why am I so stupid you ask? Well, it's complicated. First of all, I haven't had the time to burn all my Vinyl onto CDs, so that I could take my dual-CD players, that would weigh around 10kg, instead of the turntables and records that weigh around 45kg. Second, I had charged them last week for the Behringer B300s, ...

An intimate gig at the Social Bar and Cafe
2007-02-23 10:28:03
I had a very interesting time at the Soci al Bar and Cafe , located at the RMIT Village Old Melbourne (RMIT student accomodation). It was a private function for around 60 foreign exchange students (although more than 100 turned up in the end!), and I had to take my own equipment and speakers. I hired two Behringer B300 speakers for $70, from DGENR8, which was the cheapest place I could find to get the type of speakers I wanted, and I took the rest of the equipment from home (2 x technics, Numark CDN-36 dual CD player and Numark DM3050 mixer). The speakers were unbelievably heavy, but were powerful enough for the 100 or so people. Since the speakers were so heavy, I didn't bother lifting them up to slide them onto the speaker stands -- I had enough trouble taking them out of the car! Leaving the speakers on the ground turned out OK though, as many of the people were at a much lower area of the bar, than the speakers. While setting up, I needed to borrow a table from the bar to place all...

Orientations, a beach party and a new thursday night!!
2007-02-20 10:26:03
A few interesting events happening in the next couple of weeks, and all of which I'll be involved in at some level, either as a DJ or punter.Tomorrow I've got a private function lined up for the orientation of 60 foreign exchange students at RMIT Village from 7pm to 11pm. I'll be hiring two Behringer B300 speakers for it (200 Watts RMS on each), which I think will be sufficient for 60 people indoors. I'll be taking my turntables and Numark dual CD players as well.Day after (Thursday) I'll be meeting up with Luke (DJ Pound) to organise a new night we're starting at Lustre Lounge! It's like old times for me, since Lustre Lounge was the very first bar I've played at, and I was the resident there for around two years. Lustre will be the perfect venue for some chill-out House music on Thursdays, so we'll be starting that up soon!Next week on Wed and Thurs I've got the RMIT Orient ations where I'll be playing for an hour or two on each day. Wednesday is the main orientation in t...

Joey Youngman Videos!
2007-02-17 10:25:03
Finally, a decent recording of a Joey Young man gig!! The second video is the best. At one point in the second vid. he tries to figure out how to use some part of the mixer but then he gives up and continues dancing! The crowd seems to be loving the track he's playing -- probably a new track of his (according to the YouTube comments). Awesome music, full of piano samples and the typical Joey Youngman beat!

Here's a recent YouTube video I found of Mark Farina playing at "Sea of Dreams" (probably the name of the nightclub). This is the first video I've seen of him where he's playing Mushroom Jazz (or at least that's what I think he's playing!). Nice and slow music, but still very funky and it sounds good! In the last few bits of the video he's mixing into another track.

RMIT Orientation (Brunswick) Video
2007-02-13 22:22:03
If that was just the Brun swick Orient ation, I can just imagine what the City Orienta tion will be like! There were heaps of people there today, around 150 I think, and plenty of food, stalls, entertainment, and even a couple of speeches. I played the first set (11am-12pm), but I only played for about 40 mins as we got delayed by about 20 minutes. After that two brothers played the guitar and sang some popular alternative/pop songs for an hour, after which I played for another hour, and finally another guitarist finished it off with a solo performance.I played some house as usual. Mostly vocal stuff and a few house remixes of popular tunes. At one point I was searching for a 'happy' Kaskade remix ("Gonna make it") which I thought people would enjoy, but unfortunately I had left at home. In the end, no one danced, but I wasn't expecting anyone to either at Orientation! There were quite a crowd towards the end of my first set, but not a lot of people hung around after lunch, which is...

RMIT Orientations!
2007-02-08 22:18:07
After handing over two demos, and waiting for over a month and half, I've finally been asked to play at the RMIT Orient ation for the RMIT City campus, Bourke St. campus, Brunswick campus and the Carlton campus! I can't do the Carlton one, but I'll be playing at the others. Really looking forward to these gigs! I've played at the RMIT CS/IT Orienta tion twice in the past, but this time it will be at the main orientations, which will definitely have better equipment, more powerful speakers, but most importantly, more people! Hopefully there will be over 500 people at each of the orientations, since 300 was estimated for the first CS/IT orientation I had played at.Another day-time 'party' I'm going to be able to use my digital(video) camera with, so keep an eye on this blog for a video sometime in the next couple of weeks!

Back to life!
2007-02-07 22:18:02
So it's back to reality after one and half months of magic and madness. Myself and my fiance went right ahead and got ourselves married, which resulted in people coming down from all over the world, some of whom I hadn't seen for over ten years, and some of whom had left Sri Lanka for the first time to go overseas. The different parts of the world present on the day were:Sri LankaMauritiusSingaporeDubaiU.K.JapanSydn eyand from many parts of Melbourne. It was hectic getting things ready in time for the wedding, but also heaps and heaps of fun seeing close family in Australia together. The wedding day went very well, lots of cheerful faces, lots of music and dancing, some great speeches, a few tears (yes, I'm dissapointed at myself), an awesome (and filling!) four course meal, and an amazing riverside venue. We spent the wedding night at Langham Hotel along Southbank, and a day or so later went on our Honeymoon to Seahaven Resort in Noosa (Queensland). When we got back, some of our f...

Mr. Jules quirking it out!
2007-02-07 22:18:02
I had a listen to a new remix by Melbourne man Mike Jules (www.myspace.com/mikejules) and he's getting better and quirkier at every new production! His P. Muzik track already gets plenty of air-time by me, and looks like his new dub of P. Muzik will get even more. His tracks are as quirky and bouncy as they get, but with plenty of surprises to keep them different to the usual 'jackin' sound everyone's familiar with. I think it's now just a matter of time until he puts his three productions into a 12".

DJ Caravan @ Myer?!
2006-12-02 15:39:05
We went shopping to The Basement store at Myer today where some good clothing stores and the Virgin music store is located, and I noticed an old caravan at the basement with some good DJ equipment inside. The DJ was missing, but the caravan was continuously pumping out chilled-out House tunes as well as some pop, and later some more upbeat West Coast House sounds!! Apparently The Basement does have a resident DJ who plays a combination old and new music. From what I've seen online, a live band played at The Basement for their first anniversary. The equipment in the caravan were 2xTechnics turntables, 2xTechnics CD players, and Technics headphones. The mixer seemed to be a Vestax/Stanton. The monitor speaker was a small one, as the volume level has to be fairly low to make it a pleasant shopping experience, and the speakers were spread out throughout the store.I'm trying to figure out how to contact the people managing the music at the store so I could have a spin in that caravan! Free Hosting For MP3 Mixes
2006-12-02 15:39:05
After having a look around for a good place to host my MP3 mixes and tracks for free, I came across http://www.orbitfiles.com. The good thing about this service is that they provide 1GB (which is more than enough for 15 one hour MP3 mixes, encoded at 160kbps) of free storage, unlimited file sizes (so uploading that 2 hour mix of yours shouldn't be a problem! But the maximum mix length I've uploaded is 65 minutes), but most importantly, they keep your mix forever, i.e. without deleting it after a month or so like most other services.Only problem with Orbitfiles is that they don't provide a direct link to your MP3. So you'll have to go to a webpage from where you can download. They do this so that they can advertise on the webpage and make some money out of it. Although having no direct link is fine in most cases, if you want to stream your MP3 file from, say Webjay (which is what I'm using -- see the little MP3 player on the left), you'll have problems, as the Webjay streamer r...

Derrick Carter, Melbourne '06
2006-12-02 15:39:05
After changing my mind a couple of times, eventually I decided to see Cart er instead of Chuck Love. Carter played at the Atlantic South Wharf, which was located at the Docklands, but it wasn't the easiest place to find! After driving around the Docklands for about 30 mins I finally managed to stumble into right place. The venue was perfect! It's located right next to the Yarra, with a small more layed back bar called Alumbra right alongside the main venue, for those after an occasional 'break' from the main act. Lots of nice Buddha statues in the Alumbra made it look very appealing.Carter was in the main room, which had a large enough area to easily be able to hold 1000. He was supposed to start at 2am but started about 30 mins later (which was good for me as I was late too!), and played a techy/jackin' set, which I thought had a pretty similar beat right throughout. It seemed like most people were just standing around talking and moving their heads than actually dancing. There ...
