Will Britney Turn It Out for the Gays?
2008-03-06 11:58:00
Britney Spears may have more than a music video in mind as she hits the dance studio. She could be getting ready start performing live. Producers of Cyndi Lauper’s second annual True Colors tour for gay rights may try to snag the pop princess for a performance or two. This wouldn’t be their first attempt. They reportedly asked Spears last year to join Lauper, Rosie O’Donnell, Erasure, Debbie Harry and the MisShapes onstage at L.A.’s Greek Theater in June, but it never happened. A tour rep insisted at the time that Spears was invited for one of the Las Vegas dates, but she never got back to them. Other reports claimed Lauper & Co. nixed Spears when she reportedly said she would only dance or lip-synch her performance. The new 24-city North American tour, presented by gay cable network Logo, kicks off May 31 at Boston’s Bank of America Pavilion. Performers include O’Donnell, the B-52s, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Deborah Cox, Indig...

Age Isnt Slowing Cyndi Lauper Down
2008-03-05 05:40:00
The saying is nowadays that 50 is the new 40 – it was evident the other night when Ms. Cyndi Lauper , whose kewpie-doll face and piercing little girl voice that suggests a fusion of Betty Boop and Melanie Griffith, strutted her stuff on stage at the State Theatre in Sydney. Backed by her 5-piece band, Cyndi’s fans were treated to a dazzling light show of vivid, psychedelic patterns that beamed onto the stage background, not to mention a great night of music. Ms. Lauper, the mid-1980’s star who briefly gave Madonna a run for her money, radiated enough energy and high spirits to suggest that 54 might even be the new 30. Cyndi’s voice is a personality voice with power: high-pitched but still strong and flexible, displaying raw emotion often challenging delicacy and refinement. To her audience she projects a mixture of playful determination and childlike sadness, much as she did more than two decades ago. She has a readiness to bring new concepts to old songs m...

Record labels, who needs em? Jill Sobule has her fans for ...
2008-03-04 02:46:00
NEW YORK — In making six CDs, singer Jill Sobule has worked for two major record companies that dumped her and two indie labels that went bankrupt beneath her. Now she’s turning to people she can really trust — her fans. Sobule, whose witty and poignant writing first attracted attention with the song ‘‘I Kissed a Girl,’’ has set up a website asking fans to donate money so she can make a new CD. She set a goal of $75,000 and, in a month, she’s made about $54,000. She’s another example of a musician taking control of her career as the business crumbles around her, and doing it with a unique sense of humour. Contributors can choose a level of pledges ranging from the $10 ‘‘unpolished rock,’’ which earns them a free digital download of her disc when it’s made, to the $10,000 ‘‘weapons-grade plutonium level,’’ where she promises ‘‘you get to come and sing on my CD. Record revellers answer Mardi Gras critics
2008-03-02 12:19:00
A record number of gays and lesbians and their families and friends celebrated the 30th Sydney Mardi Gras on Saturday night. About 10,000 revellers and a further 400,000 rainbow flag-waving onlookers answered the critics and doomsayers who, in the lead-up to the parade, claimed Mardi Gras had lost its way. Led by veterans of the first Mardi Gras, the '78ers, Saturday night's parade contained many politically-themed entries alongside the more colourful, crazy and outrageous ones. The '78ers received a particularly warm welcome from the onlookers who lined Oxford Street for the event's 30th birthday bash. Among other popular paraders were the progressive Jewish group Dayenu, who marched with Beit el Hob (House of Love), a group for LGBTQs of Middle Eastern backgrounds. Crowds also gave a rousing cheer for the members of the Australian Defence Force, who marched for the first time. Also marching for the first time was the new commander of Surry Hills police, Superintendent ...

How Jimmy Kimmel scored Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford...but not Cyndi Lauper
2008-02-29 02:09:00
Jimmy Kimmel assembled a pretty sweet collection of celebrities for his "I'm F---ing Ben Affleck" video — Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford were just two of the A-list stars featured in the viral sensation — but there was one '80s icon he just couldn't land. "You know who we really wanted to be in it but couldn't because of her schedule was Cyndi Lauper," Kimmel says of the We Are the World veteran. "We thought it would be great to have her really belting it out right in the middle of the song. But God took Cyndi Lauper away from us and gave us Josh Groban. I think this is some of his best work." How did Pitt — who received what Kimmel exec producer Jill Leiderman calls an "impassioned plea" to sign on — wind up as a delivery dude? "It was the middle of the night and we had to give Brad ideas in the morning, and I just scratched out a bunch," says Kimmel. "I really liked the FedEx idea, and he definitely p...

Lauper keeps pumping out the pop
2008-02-26 23:36:00
Big-coiffed ageing popette Cyndi Lauper wants to flog her boppy tunes to a new generation 20 years after hits Time After Time drew throngs of big-haired funksters to dancefloors 1980s- and she'll use her Aussie tour to launch her new assault.Lauper, whose tune Gilrs Just Wanna Have Fun became a disco anthem, says she will move to a punchier beat this time around, saying despite nearing 30 years in the business she has never found her true sound.Lauper, 54, currently touring Australia, will use her Australian tour to mount a return to the top 40 with a new dance album, ignoring critics who say the platinum blonde's salad days have long wilted over a decade since her last original release. The singer performs in Melbourne this week before more dates in Sydney and Brisbane.A track titled Set Your Heart from the new album, rumoured to be titled Bring You to the Brink, is already gettting heavy airplay in Japan, where it features on a Toyota commercial.Lauper ha...
Cyndi Lauper charts fun comeback through dance
2008-02-26 23:28:00
POP star Cyndi Lauper is planning a chart comeback through dance music, but isn't worried how music listeners will view her change of genre.Lauper, best known for '80s hits Girls Just Want to Have Fun, True Colours and Time After Time will release a dance album this year. Bring You to the Brink was recorded in London, Paris and Sweden, and features collaborations with dance acts Basement Jaxx, Dragonette and the Scumfrog among others. "I wanted a combination of a lot of different rhythms," Lauper explained. "A lot of times in dance music they process the vocals so much you can't connect to it, there's no warmth, you lose the humanity. "So I saw a medium I'd like to work in, but with a voice that's less processed, more human." Lauper, 54, has sold 25 million-plus albums, while Time After Time has been covered by more than 100 acts from Miles Davis to Matchbox Twenty. The singer is putting the finishing touches to her new album while on her first A...

He expects the tickets to go on sale mid-week.Tickets to the Mardi Gras Party sold out last Thursday, including an extra quota of 1500 tickets released on Wednesday.
