The '80s pop princess jetted into town ahead of her State Theatre gigs next week, leaving the 54-year-old plenty of time (after time) to rest up before her performances.Promoters have denied talk that the gay icon could appear for Mardi Gras celebrations, but the ultimate party girl clearly wants to have fun."I love a good parade," she said recently. "I'm rooting for Amy Winehouse," she said on the red carpet before the 50th anniversary of the Grammy Awards. "You can hear her voice on the record, it's not smashed to bits with compression, and you can connect to her voice." The music legend, who won a Best New Artist Grammy Award in 1985, continued: "She has a very unique voice. Her record isn't very processed, and that's why I like it. It takes courage to stand up and do a record like that, and I love that. "This is rock and roll. We should not be conservative, we should not be safe." Yet by the time the Queens-raised singer showed her True Colors to the music world in the '80s, fun was something she knew little about. To say Cyndi's childhood was tumultuous is an understatement. At five her father left her Italian-American mother to raise three children on her own. By the age of 10 the girl born Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper had been exposed to an abusive home life and expelled from four schools, including a convent. As a teen, she left the family nest, found herself homeless and was treated in hospital for mal-nutrition.
