Cyndi Lauper Concert Wows Calhoun Audience

Cyndi Lauper gave a special concert in January to a sold-out, enthusiastic Calhoun audience in the school's intimate Mary Lea Johnson Performing Arts Center.  Made possible by third grade mom Lisa Barbaris, the concert was a fundraiser for Calhoun's Performing Arts Series and a wonderful treat for the parents, students, alumnae/i and staff who attended.

by Doug Rule  According to indie rock musician Bob Mould, this Saturday's Blowoff will ''probably just be the usual really good fun, the really sexy party, the great crowd that we always draw.'' In other words, nothing special -- except that it marks the monthly party's fifth anniversary to the date. ''It's been fun watching it grow from this little monthly event at the Velvet Lounge all the way up to what it is now,'' says Mould, who started the DJ-based event in 2003 with fellow musician Rich Morel. It's been in residence at the city's 9:30 Club since the fall of that year, first at the tiny downstairs Back Bar, then up to the main floor two years ago. The focus remains on playing mostly indie-rock and progressive house music not often heard in gay venues. Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras turns 30 this year. The first event in 1978 was banned, and many of the participants were arrested. Their names were published in the local paper, and many lost their jobs. Homosexuality was not decriminalised in New South Wales until 1982. Today it is the largest cultural event in Australia, known throughout the world as the gayest street party of them all. This year's proceedings kick off on Saturday 9th February with a commemorative tree planting ceremony in Centennial Park and will culminate in the world famous-parade along Oxford St on Saturday 1st March.The three week arts, sports and cultural festival will see a wealth of international and national performers and visitors in 2008. I had gone to Paris and England to write. I returned to my voice as a writer and as an artist but in a way I had never done before. The funny thing was that I have always heard that travel was a great thing for a writer. But I never traveled over seas before just to write… and without a minder too. Of course I did have help. I had a driver. I traveled only a little like a celebrity. But for the most part I was just myself without a lot of brew ha ha. And it came back easy at first. I remembered the peace and comfort it gave me to describe in words what I felt and saw because that’s all I was doing.  Give an excitable crowd enough booze, food, holiday cheer and noisemakers, and you've got a room full of electricity. Add Cyndi Lauper to the mix and the air positively crackles. Lauper, on the first leg of a tour headed to Australia, kicked off a New Year's Eve celebration Monday at the Sheraton Waikiki. Although the show was occasionally marred by balky stage monitors that seemed to annoy sound-perfectionist Lauper, she troopered through with high-energy performances of her apparently bottomless quiver of great songs, most of which she wrote.
