Andrea Parker - Groovetech Radio sets (RARE!)
2008-04-07 15:52:00 For those who don't know, Groovetech was an online powerhouse of electronic music - featuring a record shop and internet radio entity which spanned many cities across the globe. They had some of the best DJ sets featured weekly (live) including the Electro chair Sessions, bringing DJs like Andrew Weatherall, Radio active Man, Tipper and Andrea Parker to name a few. I was lucky enough to find someone in Canada who somehow had amassed a handful of the .rm files from select radio sesssions. I got the DVD, and spent at least 2 months painstakingly going through the .rm audio and taking out the little pops and clicks, cleaning up the audio and converting to mp3. Even with my seemingly expansive knowledge of underground Electronic/Electro tunes, there are only a few tracks from all those sets that I recognize! These Andrea Parker sets are some of the best from that batch. She plays a ton of classic Electro and Miami Bass , including 2 Live Crew - along with a bunch of obscure dark Electro t... Andrea Parker - The Dark Ages EP
2008-04-07 14:13:00 Gotta give a huge shout out to Baroquedub for sorting this one out. I didn't know about this EP before, but it's PURE electro - full of analog expression - heavy 808s, tons of bass and discordant atmospherics. I immediately recognized some of the tracks from her Groovetech Radio sets (which I will be posting shortly). If you like oldschool Miami Bass and real Electro (i.e. NOT fischerspooner or any of that hipster bullshit), you absolutely must download this EP!Andrea Parker - The Dark Ages EPLabel - QuartermassReleased - 2001Style - Electro, BassTracklist:1 Empty Words (5:08)2 The Swamp (5:29)3 Expedition (5:31)4 Invasion (5:36)5 No Excuse (4:46)Review from Forced Exposure:"Inky Blacknuss, Two Sandwiches short of a Lunchbox [R&S], Angular Art [Infonet], an acclaimed album Kiss My Arp on Mo' Wax.... these are some of the many projects in which you may find Andrea Parker's touch as composer. Cabaret Voltaire - Plasticity
2008-04-02 18:32:00 Cabaret Voltaire - PlasticityLabel - PlastexReleased - 1992Style - Electro nic , IDM, Experimental , Ambient , ElectroThis is one of those albums that we used to play over and over and over again. Mainly because of the movie dialogue about Sherm or PCP and 187s (Track 1 "Low Cool"). The movie apparently never came out due to high production costs, but would have been cool to watch. I gather it was some sort of documentary on gangs/street life or something like that. Even without the movie, CV does an excellent job of creating a soundscape that compliments the dark underbelly of inner-city life. I had lost my copy of the album years ago, but it just recently re-appeared so here it is....AMG Review:Re-emerging with a much more original sound after their 1990 house album, Kirk and Mallinder for the most part rely on abstract electro-inspired ambient-techno with extended voice-over samples for Plasticity. It certainly wasn't the first time CV had remade themselves without losing elements o...
Andrea Parker - Kiss My Arp
2008-04-02 17:06:00 Andrea Parker - Kiss My ArpLabel - Mo' WaxReleased - 1999Style - Electro , IDM, Abstract, Downtempo Another old CD of mine that was misplaced years ago and recently re-emerged. Andrea Parker has been one of my favorite (and most underrated) DJs ever since I caught the few electro sets she dropped on the now defunct Groovetech Radio. I received a promo copy of this when I worked at the radio station, and I remember loving it to death. Upon sober listening, I must inform you to SKIP tracks 1 and 3 ('The Unknown' and 'Breaking The Code') if, like me, you prefer things Instrumental. The rest of the tunes are just great. My personal top picks from this album are tracks 4, 5, 6, & 7. Amazing stuff!Perhaps I should post those Andrea Parker sets? If anyone cares, leave a comment and I'll post those. They are rare and I haven't seen them anywhere - not to mention they are extraordinary. Like a cross between classic Electro, Miami Bass and IDM. Her mixing is killer. Review from The Histo... Afrobeat!
2008-02-28 16:32:00 Afrobeat is a combination of Yoruba music, jazz, Highlife, and funk rhythms, fused with African percussion and vocal styles, popularized in Africa in the 1970s. Afrobeat's main creator and best known artist was the Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Fela Kuti, who coined the term Afrobeat, shaped the musical structure and also the political context of the genre. Kuti launched Afrobeat in the late 60's with his famous and unequalled band Egypt 70. He had earlier played a fusion of jazz and highlife (For which he first used the term 'Afrobeat') with his Koola Lobitos Band.Afrobeat originated from the southern part of Nigeria in the 60s where Kuti experimented with many different forms of contemporary music of the time. Prevalent in his music are native African harmonies and rhythms, taking different elements and combining, modernizing and improvising upon them. Politics are essential to the genre of Afrobeat, since founder Kuti used social criticism to pave the way for ... More About: Afrobeat

Bomb Squad Instrumentals - '07/08 Special!
2008-01-31 17:51:00 It's taken some time for me to post this, as I was waiting for a tracklisting from Bobby Hill - but he never got back to me so I'm just going to go ahead and post this. If you're as big a Public Enemy /Bomb Squad fan as I am, you won't be too pressed for a tracklisting. Every New Years Eve/Xmas Eve time, DC's local community Jazz station WPFW 89.3FM goes all out. Bobby Hill hosts this show called The Other Side Saturday nights, and he has been doing an instrumental PE/Bomb Squad special every year since 1990 or something. It's the coolest thing ever, and still do this day it's my favorite thing on the radio all year. So, sorry for the delay and lack of tracklisting this time around - but any fans of PE or Bomb Squad productions in general (Ice Cube, YBT, Son of Bezerk, Terminator X etc.) will love this. I split the 3-hour special up into 3 1-hour chunks for easy digestion. Please grab them and bump them loud! Much love to Bobby Hill and the entire WPFW/Pacifica family for keep... More About: Special

Various Artists - Dub Xperience - The Dread Operators: An On-U Sound Compil
2008-01-18 17:50:00 Various Artists - Dub Xperience - The Dread Operators : An On-U Sound CompilationLabel: Cherry Red - Cleopatra RecordsRecord date: 1981-84Album Style: Dub, Experimental , Lee Library, Roots , UK StyleeFrom beginning to end, this album is packed with great dub, roots, and early dancehall recorded between 1981 and 1984. There isn't the over-production and/or over-experimentation that plagues some On-U Sound releases, and neither is there the generic sound that plagues others. This is just good old-fashioned reggae in all its glory. Creation Rebel and Singers & Players dominate Dub Xperience, each contributing 4 strong tunes. Creation Rebel's "Independent Man," a cover of Bob Andy's "Unchained," may be the best song here, with its classic, emotional roots melody and driving bass, while "Chemical Specialist" -- the dub version of Jah Woosh's fun "Woodpecker Sound" (in which he mimics a woodpecker's call) -- and "Eugenic Device" are inventive dubs. Singers & Players meanwhile c...
