Michael Campbell (AKA Mikey Dread) was the DJ behind the groundbreaking Dread at the Controls show on the JBC. Campbell was initially forbidden to speak on his show due to his engineer status and had to use a pre-recorded announcer. However, he worked around his restrictions by using many strange sound effects and jingles to marry the tunes together. Dread played lots of exclusive dub plates from the likes of Lee Perry and King Tubby, amassed quite a following, and managed to upset the management at his radio station. Mikey also set up his Dread at the Controls label. African Anthem was his first album and first release on his label. OK not a soundtrack or dub, but this is my most recent DJ mix and so far its my personal favorite. Hope ye enjoy. So I had a DJ Spun tape when I was like 16 where he played Jungle records @ 33 rpm. I started doing the same thing back in '95 and it's still my favorite way to hear jungle. On the wrong speed. I'm sure you'll agree. This mix is my favorite yet; atmospheric jungle dropped down 3 octaves so the bass is ridiculous. Please grab and think of shimmering sunrises. A lush, easy-going Brazilian outing, Latin in the Horn is aided substantially by the sophistication Lalo Schifrin brings to Hirt's cotton candy. Even though this outing post-dates the "Bossa Nova" fad by a few years, Schifrin was always masterful in this style (to date, his last journey in this direction except for his disco retakes on this LP's first three tracks on 1976's BLACK WIDOW).
