Majeure
2010-10-25 17:49:00 Majeure is the alter ego of A.E. Paterra, drummer for seminal sci-fi prog explorers Zombi, and Timespan is his debut release. Taking the term "full-length" quite literally, the album is made up of three epic, side-long journeys through time and space. Merging the darkness of Vangelis' Blade Runner-era Moog-driven scores and the stately minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass with the relentless drive of Can and Silver Apples, Timespan delivers inspiring sci-fi disco of the highest caliber. Written, recorded and painstakingly produced by Paterra over an 18-month period, Majeure is unique in its careful collaboration of live and electronic sounds. Anchored by Paterra's sturdy, propulsive live drums, each song uses layers of analogue synthesizers to masterfully craft extended compositions that virtually stop time before speeding it up, culminating in countless moments of genuine majesty. 2xCD version includes a bonus album of remixes (originally released as TRR185LP) ... Ancestral Star
2010-10-23 22:29:00 I listened to the Conjurer EP and felt the same way I did when I first listened to The Bees Made Honey In the Lion's Skull; captivated by the way such slow, simple, clean music could transport a listener. To me, that Earth record had a Western, desert feel to it. I couldn't escape the pull of old saloons and tumbleweeds, and wandering on a distant mesa. Conjurer had the same effect, but it was mystical and ever so slightly Near East. "Across the Deserts of Ash" conjured Turkey and Persia and the whole effect of the record was like a dancing djinn. It was warm and magical and alien and intoxicating. Ancestral Star is everything that Conjurer could have set it up to be and more. All of the magical, transporting elements of this duo's brand of drone are present, but with more attack and more volume (in a spatial sense) than on that last EP. What Barn Owl does can't be described directly, but only through analogy. On the water or in the desert, turbulence is the norm. The ... More About: Music
Stolen Stars Left for No One
2010-10-23 21:06:00 A label like ?space-rock? deserves music that?s as nuanced and limitless-feeling as space, and space-rock deserves a band like White Hills. Not only do they add urgency to familiar psychedelic rock templates, but they pay just as close attention to the quiet moments as the raging ones-- each track on their self-titled Thrill Jockey debut displays a careful layering of sounds and atmospheres.? - Pitchfork ?White Hills - reminds me of the true spirit of rock and roll. Find a cosmic groove. Play loud. Kill your friends. Burn down your school. Merge with the infinite. Put simply, this is a gift for everyone interested in the destruction of life, municipal buildings and piss weak indie.? - The Quietus ?And so despite barely being able to stand it was time for one final push for the much anticipated White Hills. Ghost
2010-10-23 19:37:00 A live album, but a live album unlike any other, Temple Stone is, as the liner notes indicate, a record of "some experimental performances at sacred places in recent years," in many but not all cases favoring acoustic over electric instruments (a notable exception is a great version of "Rakshu"). Playing at various temples and churches in Japan, Ghost mostly drew on songs from the self-titled debut and Second Time Around, with most of the recordings coming from sessions in 1993. The various selections aren't arranged in any particular order, while there's no hint if songs listed as taken from a performance at a particular site are all from the same or different evenings, so anyone expecting a straight record of the Ghost live experience at the time won't find it here. Those expecting more of the mysterious, fascinating acid folk-rock drama of early Ghost, though, will find plenty of that here. 2010-10-22 22:30:00 Up to a just few years ago, My models were inseparable from the settings I photographed them in (whether I liked it or not). The moment the shutter clicked, it was up to me to combine the two as well as possible, and get the best out of both. At the time, post-processing was in its infancy, and a photographer?s resources were restricted to choosing the right moment, and also, but less significant, the ability to create a good quality print. My search for locations with special qualities (most of which unfortunately turned out to be unsuitable for nude photography), and the unpleasant feeling of working under restrictions, came to an end thanks to fabulous new software, which suddenly provided photographers with the sort of enviable freedom that painters, sculptors and other artists had long since enjoyed. At a stroke, anything seemed possible. As if by magic, my lovely models started appearing in amazing settings: in cold, crowded cityscapes, in locations that could hardly be less...

...Prophecy Of The Black Widow
2010-10-21 17:59:00 Seeping out of the American underground on the always engrossing NNF label, Matt Hill presents his sophomore Umberto album. It follows on from the Giallo soundtrack style he brilliantly aped on 'From The Grave...' deeper into the bowels of the early '80s sound, leering creepily at John Carpenter and the more bewitching ends of Italo disco and new wavey bits. Many have tried this sound - step forward Zombi, Gatekeeper, Francesco Clemente, Anton Maiovvi - but far fewer have achieved it with as much grain and VHS-warped eeriness as this. It feels more like James Ferraro has locked onto a killer Giallo collection in his dream dungeon and authentically immersed himself in their soundtracks, recreating their mood, tension and gothic mise-en-scene with scary accuracy, from the witch disco of 'The Psychic' and 'Night Stalking' to the Eurozone emotions of 'Red Dawn' and the Goblin-esque 'Widow Of The Web', all the while keeping a sly sliver of knowing cheekiness tucked in the top... Rautatie
2010-10-20 16:06:00 Circle is ever changing, ever Circular. On Rautatie the band - which following the introduction of guitarists J. & P. Jääskeläinen is now a six-piece - once again dives into uncharted waters of music, into a miasma of influences that feels vaguely familiar but, in an uncanny way, is not quite real. Rautatie is epic hard rock and colossal riffs that corrode into fragments of black metallic atonality over time. Occasionally the album?s majestic elements step aside and let sprinkles of athletic boogie take the center stage. Together the eight tracks on the album form a hard rocking bullet train, speeding ever onwards on a circular railroad to infinity. Travelling
2010-10-19 16:23:00 The boundary between progressive rock and jazz is a fluid one?indeed, it's increasingly unrecognizable, as some of the finest musicians around move effortlessly between and within the genres. Thus Robert Fripp, one of prog's most influential players, can be found in the company of jazz musician Theo Travis, who is himself a member of Soft Machine Legacy and Gong. Steve Howe, another prog rock guitar great, is equally adept at moving across the genres. But while Fripp and Travis inhabit the improvisational, soundscape end of the spectrum, Howe has chosen to work within a style of jazz that would be readily recognizable to players such as Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell?major influences on the young guitarist, back in the 1960s. Travelling is the Steve Howe Trio's second album: a live recording from concerts in Canada and England during 2008. It beautifully showcases Howe's approach in its collection of jazz standards, early Yes songs and Howe's own more recent compositio... More About: Music
Something Scandinavian
2010-10-18 18:00:00 Though dead serious in their intention to explore the arcane and presumably heathen roots of traditional Scandinavian music, most Norwegian black metallers reached to the folk realm with genuine passion but a certain lack of knowledge. Thus Satyr's one-off project Wongraven, Burzum's keyboard-based pagan ambient, Storm's controversial metallic revamping of "Oppi Fjellet" or Ulver's folk noir experiment _Kveldssanger_ were all prime examples of a romantic and somewhat nationalist trend on the Norwegian scene, but were mostly fit for devoted underground fans only. Considering this, Wardruna's debut is easily the best approach that black metal musicians have ever made to Norwegian folklore and foregone tradition; not easy listening by any means, but a fascinating affair for anyone interested in indigenous European tradition. Ex-Gorgoroth drummer Einar Kvitrafn, a.k.a. Kvitrafn, already hinted interest in the subject on Bak De Syv Fjell's obscure EP _From Haavardstun_ and Jotunsp... More About: Music

Vladimir Dubossarsky & Alexander Vinogradov
2010-10-17 10:47:00 The work of Vladimir Dubosarsky and Alexander Vinogradov is very contemporary. With their paintings the idealistic dreams of Socialist Realism become a glorification of idols created by a society of mass consumerism: Stallone and Schwarzenegger, Andy Warhol and Spider Man, Mickey Mouse and Barbie, etc., etc. In their project 'Fight Without Rules' they explore the mass-media cliché of the Russian soul and Russian reality: daredevilry and intoxication, ice holes and 'valenki' felt boots, the samovar and Russian beauties, plus an enigmatic giraffe on the horizon? By hyperbolising and inflating stereotypes of Russianness characteristic of both the view from outside and notions cultivated inside, Dubosarsky and Vinogradov strive for ultimate articulation of the phenomenon. At the same time the artists counterbalance this with their redeeming irony. From; Russian Dreams Links; Vladimir Dubossarsky & Alexander Vinogradov
Samothrace
2010-10-16 12:56:00 One listens to Samothrace and imagines the city of Lawrence, Kansas rendered post-apocalyptic: immutable dusky snow scattering like static on a broken television, fenceposts stuck jagged out of the dirt. I suppose there?s the same spread of shopping malls and sports bars and community centers as most other urban centers, but, like I said, Samothrace seems to erase this, the city then a festering wound stuck up out of the brittle, flat farmland with this band and this music something like leeches at once living on that split flesh while suturing the mistake shut. I?m getting carried away. But this is melodramatic music, with a post-rock sense of theater and doom metal?s swollen ambience. Besides, locale can be important to a young band (why else would we listen to We Are Scientists?), and the music of Samothrace truly seems wrenched from that flat vista. The predominant unifying factor, after all, of the four pieces on Life?s Trade is a strangely Midwestern affection for melody. On ... More About: Music
Pocahaunted
2009-12-21 17:16:00 Voice has a long history with drone music that goes beyond John Cale and the drone pioneers. Throat singing in central Asia has been around for centuries, as has religious chanting in Northern Europe. Native American chants are a notable American version of chanting/drone dating as far back as the discovery of America and beyond. So voice, while not a common drone instrument - at least in the Earth or Sunn 0))) school of thought - has been dominating the minds of those interested in prolonging a musical experience; to let the sound morph and wander through the mind and soul.Pocahaunted has taken some cues from the Native American past in not only their graphic design, but in their music and name. While not strictly influenced by Native American chanting or music, one can certainly hear the beating drums reminiscent of Native American dances as well as the chanting and speaking in a language all their own. about Hawkwind
2009-12-20 20:19:00 What can we say about Hawkwind? Certinaly nothing describes their prime-era better than Julian Copes words - "They were a collection of disreputable star rats fuelled by a battery of hallucinogenic influences and united only by an incorrigible sense of psi-powered, pre-1976 cosmic punk rock attitude broken off and gobbled as though it was their sole means of sustenance while playing riffs into the grooves with an relentless head of steam. The rhythmic repetitions offset by wordless trance-chants are hypnotic to the core and the whole mess is performed at raw and rambunctious paces as it blazes with one damn racket with nowhere to go but hurtling through space at the sound of speed, anyway. Towards anything and everything. With the jaws of black oblivion not far behind nipping at their respective asses they were already in process of playing off of so furiously. For they sank a couple hundred pounds of pressure into one square foot and punched it in with a single, swift and confident...

By using past and present techniques of painting and written histories, I invent my own nostalgic experiences and narratives. I examine imagery, stories and concepts from both the past and present and place them in a shared setting. The established conflicts and connections found in this union enable an image that is flexible for many audiences. I implore traditional and contemporary practices of painting and mix these approaches to form new arrangements. I may use classical clarity to represent and to define a specific part of a story, and at the same time use the ambiguity of abstraction to complete the ...
Elm
2009-12-20 16:47:00 For my money, Barn Owl is the best new band to emerge in the last five years. Their trajectory has been meteoric, progressing musically and conceptually in leaps and bounds. I've been thrilled to be there from the beginning, watching and listening in awe as the duo of Jon Porras and Evan Caminiti have carved out an impressive niche of their own. Heavy doses of guitar savagery and tribal essence have them firmly planted at the top of the mountain. So it makes sense to deconstruct the duo and present each as a solo entity, soaring on their own.Elm is the name of Porras' solo creations. His music retains the megasonics of Barn Owl, but finds his tutelage deep in the heart of the desert. "Nemcatacoa" is a lonesome, epic journey. Named after one of the deities of his Colombian heritage, his latest full-length (and first large-scale solo release) feels huge and endless. Gnod
2009-12-19 10:51:00 This is another limited edition CD-R from the UK based drone masters, Gnod. It features 6 tracks in 71 minutes and a lot of strange stuff."Hidden" starts things off and is about 8 mins. Very spaced out with flutes, chimes, and a lot of strange noises. "It?s too Sunny to Share" is 9 mins and it tries to keep a sort of a happy melodic thread to it with flute, chimes, some slow drumming, feedback noises?later some keyboards and spoken voices come in. Strange. "Frostbitten" sounds like something that should be in a horror film and is quite a bit louder than the first two tracks and you also notice this change quite a lot. Trippy. "Pathway" is a 10min long trip and the sound quality is noticeably muffled. The drone that is the main theme in the song is deep and low fi, and layered over is the horns, chimes (they can?t seem to do without them), hand percussion and strangeness. "Nearly Died" takes a lot of patience. This is a 19 min trip to another universe for sure. "Find Land" ends the ... More About: Music

Our first release the ?Demo Of Doom? was the first lot G.O.D material to be released which was a 3 track demo which was mainly to see how the band sounded and the sound was slow, heavy doom. They we quickly followed that up with ?Godzilla On Demand EP? which had more melody to the songs and a much tighter sound in all. It had 5 tracks and lasted for 28 minutes.Through many different name changes and splitting up twice! (Fuck, we feel like an oldies band!) we have decided to give this whole thing one more shot. We also had to change yet again due to Japanese lawyers deciding to sue anyone using the name 'Godzilla' if they don't own the rights to.
