2008-02-08 18:00:00 I've been sitting on these tracks for the past week or so but haven't quite found the time to post them. But that time has now arrived! It's a slightly bigger post than normal as I just couldnt condense the list any further, all the tracks are awesome and I couldn't leave any of them out!MP3: The Presets - My PeopleThis is one of my favourite electronic tracks of the year so far. Gig Review - Blood Red Shoes (at Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff)
2008-02-04 22:00:00 I recently saw Blood Red Shoes in Cardiff at Clwb Ifor Bach . So here's a little review...First band up were She Set Sail, a local South Wales alternative rock band from Cardiff. The band comprises of Lee Smith (Bass), Jonny Payne (Guitar/Vocals), and Sam Vanttinen Newton (Drums). I was pretty impressed with these guys display, as it looked as if this was the first time they have played on such a stage, and they did well. With each song the band clearly grew in confidence, particuarly frontman Jonny Payne who seems a real talent. I think She Set Sail definatley have some potential, and the more gigs they play will only help to further this. She Set SailNext up from Nottingham were noisy punk rockers, Lovvers. The band features Shaun Hencher (vocals) who was previously in The Murder Of Rosa Luxemburg, alongside Michael Drake (Bass), Henry Withers (Guitar), and Stephen Rose (Drums). I was really impressed with Lovvers, who put on an angst filled moody performance that was full of ener... More About: Review

MP3: Hadouken - Leap Of Faith (Chase And Status Remix)I was quickly bored of the original track when it came out last year. But this Drum and Bass remix really ticks all the boxes, and the guys from Chase And Status have turned it into a really wicked track. Sabrosa Purr - To The Crickets And The Ghosts
2008-01-13 21:00:00 Hey, here's the first album review of the year. It comes from a band called Sabrosa Purr , with their debut album titled "To The Crickets And The Ghosts ", which is out now on Violet Room Records.Sabrosa Purr are a rock band from Los Angeles, California. They consist of three members, Will Love (Vocals/Guitar), Jacob Thompson (Drums), and Jeff Mendel (Lead Guitar/Foot Bass). The band have released an E.P titled "The Violet Room" which came out in 2005, and this new release is their debut full length. It is produced by Tracy Chisholm.Listening to this album, a couple of influences soon become pretty clear. One minute the band sound like Nirvana at their most ferious, and then there are soft mellow Pink Floyd moments. Both things are definately not a bad thing, and Sabrosa Purr draw upon their influences to create their own sound.Vocalist Will Love has a tremendous vocal range, from full on lung bursting screams, to gentle haunting whispers. Alongside some solid drumming from Jacob Tho... More About: Bros

Band Review : Gossamer Albatross
2007-12-19 22:00:00 Gossamer Albatross are a three-piece from Hereford in the South West of England. The three members of the band are, Lewis who is the guitarist and vocalist, Reuben who plays violin, and Geena who plays the cello. Their self-titled debut E.P has recently been released through Monosound Recordings. And it's rather good. Its not upon the first listen of this E.P, where the potential of this band first hits you, its the subsequent second, third and so on listens. Everytime you listen to the record something new jumps out at you, clearly a good sign that the band are doing something right. As far as the sound of the band goes, I guess you'd put them in the Folk bracket. Accordingly to their label, Monosound Recordings, the band will have "fans of Bright Eyes, Beirut, Neutral Milk Hotel glued to their players for the foreseeable future" .Frontman Lewis is only 18, so to be writing songs of this calibre already, shows that there can only be bigger and better things to come from this band,... Gig Review - The Wombats at Cardiff Uni
2007-12-15 19:30:00 As part of my birthday celebrations I recently went to see The Wombats at Cardiff University. So here's a little review for y'all. (Photos courtesy of Miss Kelly Shaw)The first band up were Tinseltown.Tinseltown are a 5 piece hailing from London, led by vocalist Romily Alice. They play a infectious blend of poppy indie punk rock. All the members of the band are pretty young, but already they are supporting bands such as Babyshambles and CSS. As for their set I wasn't convinced straight away, but they won me over. Singer Romily Alice has definite talent, there's something unique about her voice which sets the band apart. Tinseltown clearly have potential and i'm sure 2008 will be a good year for them.MP3: Tinseltown - SkeletonsThe second band on stage were To My Boy.To My Boy are two men with guitars from Liverpool, and their assorted electronic equipment. I guess you could describe their sound as a combination of powerpop, indie, and electronica. What I like about To My Boy is ... More About: Review , Diff
Single Review - Lions At Your Door

Remember if you're in a band or are a solo artist and want a track reviewed, then just send me an email or leave me a comment. This time its from a band called Lions At Your Door , with a track called LAYD, with Mailer Daemon on the remix.Lions At Your Door are in their own words, "5 kids from Sydney, Australia channeling haunted mansions in the old west, the howl of dead things, old movies from outer space, and you."They play a quirky blend of dancey, punky, indieish, funky...noise. It's really quite good. And their track "LAYD", has recently been given a fresh lick of paint by producer Mailer Daemon. You can imagine dancing away to this track in a club or just chilling out to it. It works on many levels. Something which works particular well is the vocal prow-ness of lead singer, Cookie.Loop Magazine said of the band, "Their final calling song LAYD really summed up their unique mixture of genres showcasing a little indie, r... Nirvana - In Utero
2007-12-02 22:00:00 Ever since I first seriously got into listening to music, I've always been a fan of Nirvana . I must have been about 13 when I saw the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit", I remember soon after that I got the "Nevermind" album on cassette, and there began my love for all things Nirvana. I guess everyone has their Nirvana moment, thats the impact that this band had, and still have on music today. However due to many reasons, it has not been until recently that I have purchased what came to be the bands final LP, "In Utero".Released in 1993 on Sub Pop Records, this third Nirvana album was an aggressive reaction to the fame and applauds that the previous album "Nevermind" had brought them. The songs are self depricating and highly critical of the position that fame brings you. It is exactly the album that Kurt Cobain wanted and needed to write. As well as employing the trademark "Seattle" sound of quiet and loud elements, the album contains some of the best songwriting seen, and demonst...

Special Guest : Craig Duranti
2007-11-25 19:24:00 First up for me is my current favourite band, Late of the Pier. I openly admit it doesnt take me very long to be completely in love with a new band, and this group of lads are no different. Hailing from Castle Donnington, there is some serious hype surrounding this lot (they are averaging 800 myspace plays a day), and they have some good people behind them too. Erol Alkan is producing the debut album, and this heavy slab of indie-electro goodness is out now on Moshi Moshi: (Ed: I've blogged this before but it is bloody good) MP3: Late Of The Pier: Bathroom Gurgle I saw this next lady at Sheperds Bush in London last week and thoroughly enjoyed my evening. Remix your brain
More articles from this author:2007-11-23 15:10:00 Hello! I am back after a very long absense. Apologies for that. But i'm back now and ready to write about the awesome new music that is around, aswell as band and album reviews, guest writer Craig Duranti will be letting you all know what he's been spinning lately, and also we hope to have an interview with the excellent Moving Units.Todays post is about the world of Remix es.For me, remixes can be spilt into two pots. You have the songs which are aren't too well known, maybe album tracks, or singles which failed to make an impression, which are then given a new lick of paint, to build upon the original ideas but also give a new slant. Then you have the remixes of well known songs, which have enjoyed good commercial success, or cult following. The priniciple is the same, the original track is altered and combined with a new vision. It is with this second group of remixes that I struggle with. Take a song such as "Foxy Lady" by Jimi Hendrix , an absolute classic. Now two artists that... More About: Switch , Example , Brain 1, 2, 3, 4 |
