Snackmaster
2007-08-28 22:24:00
A friend of mine just suggested that I check out this website for an electronica artist called Snackmaster. The tracks that are listed on MySpace are very good. I particularly like the intro track, "AvtomatThing17."It looks like Snackmaster an unsigned group located in the Boston area. They've got a website, but it doesn't look like it has much content yet. I've emailed Snackmaster via MySpace; so hopefully I'll have more information to share about this group. As a musician/composer & ex-professional singer myself (I sang with a few bands back in my college days), I think it's important to promote other artists, especially unsigned ones.

New Music Distribution For A New Millenium
2007-08-28 20:45:00
Check out this site (unsignedbandweb.com) for some new & interesting unsigned electronica artists. Also, check out this site; they (i.e., Soundclick.com) claim to be the first internet music charts, and have an extensive list of electronica you can listen to within your browser for free. Some songs can be downloaded for a negligible fee ranging anywhere from about $0.25-$1.25 per track. While I was browsing, I found this really cool band, called Celldweller. Although they are categorized as "industrial" on the SoundClick site, they sound like they share more in common with rap-metal bands like Korn, Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, & Lincoln Park. Sometimes they also sound like NIN at times. All the same, the music is pretty good. I particularly liked the track, "Switchback." Take a listen:Celldweller MP3sAnd then check out the band's bio here. Also, here's another artist I liked from the Soundclicks site. The artist is DJ Trax - The Art of Trance. The song I particularly like is called "I Fee...

This is How We Roll!

Are you a new artist trying to get noticed? Want higher visibility for your band? Well, aside from getting your own MySpace page, a great way to introduce yourself & your band to others around the planet is to comment on other people's music blogs. But don't comment anonymously. Leave your blogger ID, URL, YouTube video, etc. Hint, hint. ;-)Who knows, you might comment on the right blog & that person might know someone, who might know someone, etc., & so forth. As for little old me, I'm just an army of one here, but if I like your sound, I'll do what I can to help you get noticed. If I'm so inspired, I will digg you, del.icio.us you, etc., and promote your sound all over the internet. So comment here, leave your band's URL &/or video, and I'll take a listen.

Excitement!
2007-08-21 22:24:00
Next month, Erik (my fiancé) & I are going to see Thomas Dolby & The Cure -- in the same week! The first concert's going to be at the Ramshead in Annapolis, MD, and the second concert is a much larger venue at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philly (PA). Lots of traveling in a short time period, but it'll be worth it! I'm a huge Thomas Dolby fan & a lukewarm Cure fan (Erik's the bigger Cure fan of the two of us). I think I overdid it with The Cure in college. ;-) Back then, everyone overplayed the tape cassette version of the album "Standing on A Beach" (Singles & B-sides). OK, now I bet I've got you wondering how old I actually am! NOT telling! ;-) And yes, before you ask, that IS a current photo of me on the right side of this page. Now, in IMHO, here's a great Cure song (one of my faves): "Burn" (from The Crow soundtrack)As for Dolby, he's apparently supposed to be working on new material. (He mentioned something about it at his last concert.) I'm hoping he'll play some ...

Let The Band March (or Rather, Move) On.......
2007-08-10 00:19:00
OK, heads up, people: This post is going to be a rant. So don't say you weren't warned.I've got to air a pet peeve of mine: I think that musical artists should be able to grow & try new directions without being "penalized" by their audience. I know I certainly get sick of hearing artists play the same old sh*te over & over again at concerts, because they have to kow-tow the expectations of narrow-minded fans who are stuck in a rut & don't want to hear anything except the "oldies but goodies."A good example of this phenomenon is when U2 took a new musical direction, & put out albums like Zooropa, Pop, etc. Some people thought it was a bad blip (or slip!) in musical judgement in an otherwise great career. The thinking here was: "What errata was this? How could they diverge from their successful 'formula'? What were they thinking, by trying to 'be something that they clearly were not'? Why did they feel the need to be 'musically inconsistent'?" My response to this mode of thi...

What's On Your Mind?
2007-08-08 20:56:00
Hello Everyone Who's Currently Reading My Blog:I'd love to hear from you. Yes, you sitting in the corner, perhaps in the dark or sitting on the sofa munching on a snack, scrolling my blog on your laptop, passively reading my musical thoughts without as much as a single comment. This is your time to stand up & be counted.I'm curious to know what you've been listening to lately & what you'd recommend. It can be a great new find or a classic. Write about the music you just can't get enough of lately. Or, tell me what you think of my blog(s). To paraphrase the Information Society: "I want to know what you're thinking, tell me what's on your (musical) mind.""What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)" -CP.S. I do moderate this blog, so please, keep your posts constructive & relevant to the topic of music. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from responsibility.

A Hop Across the Pond - My Obsession with the Brit Pop Genre
2007-08-08 11:59:00
OK, I'll readily admit to being an anglophile - I'm obsessed with anything & everything British, and the area of music is no exception. (Perhaps it's because it's part of my heritage, or perhaps it's because I'm so greatly amused by the incongruous contrast of how they can simultaneously be so polite & proper & then turn around & make such hilariously rude jokes, or maybe it's just the charming accent! At any rate, I'm bonkers for Britain!)So, here are few of my favorite British musical "thangs":The Cinematics (from Glasgow, Scotland) - "Keep Forgetting" (Isn't their style slightly reminiscent of U2? Just a bit? ;-) )Bloc Party - "Banquet" (The guitar riffs from the above two bands have a similar style; these rhythmic sensibilities are strangely derivative of bands like "English Beat/General Public & The Specials" & also the third-wave ska bands I used to listen to a lot in the early-to-mid 90's -- The Pietasters, Thumper, Mighty Might Bosstones, Sublime, Fi...

A Glaring Musical Omission from My Brit Pop Faves List
2007-08-08 11:55:00
In my July 25th post, I was remiss in mentioning Interpol as another fabu major American group (hailing from New York) that've got a Brit Pop sound:"The Heinrich Maneuver" "The Scale""Slow Hands""All Fired Up""Narc""Take You On A Cruise""C'Mere""Untitled""Stella Was A Diver" (Live in Koln, Germany)"Specialist""Pioneer to the Falls" (Live)"PDA""Rest My Chemistry""Mammoth" (AOL Sessions)"Number One In A Threesome""Leif Erikson" (Eurockéennes 2005)"Obstacle 1"Interpol's sound is a tad reminiscent of the band, Slowdive. Anyone remember this band from the early '90's? (They also sound a bit like The Church.)Slowdive - "Souvlaki Space Station" (Live Hamburg 1993):Slowdive - "Catch the Breeze"
