YEA, YEA, YEA, YEA!!!!!! WHO-HOOOOOOOO!Now I know Barby of Meh is just way too modest & doesn't want me to make a big deal of the award she recently gave me, but nonetheless, I'm going to jump up & down & get just as excited as I did when I got my very first award. So there. ;-) My apologies to Barby for being such a spazz (& for taking so long to post this!)......But I think it's very cool that she thinks enough of me & my blogs to nominate me for an award. Her blog, "meh" is totally hilarious; you'll definitely want to check it out if you don't already know about it! My sister, Missladybug of Ladybug & Co, was the one who originally introduced me to Barby's blog, so I must thank her as well! ;-)So, here's the award:...and the link back to Barby's original post.

What Does This Video Mean - Anyone?
2007-09-19 09:11:00
I love this song, but frankly, the video freaks me out. Juno Reactor, G-d Is G-dIt looks like some medieval Byzantine painting that has suddenly come to life. I get some of the obvious religious symbolism, but I'm not sure what to make of the rest of it. What is the song/video trying to say, if anything? Is it supposed to be a unifying statement about people of all religions coming together & putting aside their differences? OK, I was just reading the You Tube commentary & one person says that the scenes were taken from an old 1960's movie called "Color of Pomegranate," by the Armenian director, Sergei Parajanov. The movie was shot in Georgia (the country, not the state!), where the director was born & raised.Well, the video looks like something out of a Fellini movie if you ask me! ;-) Since Parajanov's movie was filmed in the 60's, it's highly likely that he might've been influenced by Fellini.Actually upon further reading, I see that Fellini was a colleague of his, as w...

I can't believe I'm publicly admitting this, but I actually like the new Britney single, "Gimme More". It pains me to say this, but it's true: Her latest track has, dare I say it, some serious block-rockin' beats. Now I know what you're probably thinking, because I'm thinking it myself right about now: What's WRONG with me? ;-) Am I completely out of my mind for liking even a single song of hers? Now, before you tell me that she's part of the corporate pop machine that cares more about making money than making good music, or that she's a talentless, brainless bimbo & nutcase in serious need of psychiatric help, let me say this: I am NOT a Britney fan in the least, & I don't like 99% of her music. Furthermore, I think she's a terribly sad & misguided soul who's tossed herself around like a used piece of trash. For me, it's one of those "love the song," "hate the artist" type of deals. And since she doesn't seem to write or produce any of her own songs, perhaps I should ...

Portrait of The Musician As A Young Lady
2007-09-18 04:46:00
Back in the late-70's, life in a small college town wasn't easy for a musical adventurer like myself. While I'd always sought out new & interesting forms of music, it wasn't always easy to gain access to new music without putting in some serious effort. You had to go to the mountain, as it certainly wasn't going to just come to you.Back then, there was no MTV, VH1, Fuse, or even any such concept as music television, and the internet had not yet been invented. To give you an idea of what our TV world was like back then, there was Saturday Night Live, Johnny Carson, & Charlie's Angels (all of which were past my bedtime), Dance Fever (on the edge of my bedtime), Lawrence Welk, Disney's singing & dancing cartoons, the Bionic Man & Woman, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (with Pamela Sue Martin, Parker Stephenson, & then huge teen heartthrob Shaun Cassidy), and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. ;-)Sort of a bleak television landscape if you're looking for ...

A Bit of Nostalgia: Vinyl Records & Mixed Tapes, Anyone?!
2007-09-17 20:57:00
From as early as I can remember, I loved playing with gadgets, especially those relating to sound & the recording of sound.First I had fun with the record player, doing things I probably shouldn't have done (playing 33 1/3's on 45 speed & vice versa, spinning the player in reverse just for kicks, etc.).I especially loved playing my mother's really old jazz & classical records, since they were the more rare & unusual 78 speed records. I also used to have a lot of fun playing her 33 1/3 records from the 50's & 60's - Diana Ross & The Supremes, Johnny Mathis, The Platters, Red Buttons, Janis Joplin, Blood Sweat & Tears, Sergio Mendes, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc. And then of course there were a few 45's that I'd collected, which were either purchased for my sister & I or given as gifts at various kids' parties, etc.Yes, you young lads & lasses who are too young to have ever seen a walkman or gasp!, a record player, up close &...

Yea! Two Concerts & King Tut!
2007-09-17 19:49:00
I'm so excited! This week I'll be going with my fiancé, Erik, to see Thomas Dolby this Wednesday, and then the Cure this Friday, and then the King Tut exhibit on Saturday! Wow! This week is going to be jam-packed with non-stop activity! It's been a rough few weeks for multiple reasons (some of which have been briefly mentioned in my other blogs), so I'm really looking forward to some entertaining & educational diversions this week/weekend.Erik & I are huge Dolby fans, as I've probably mentioned earlier. In honor of Dolby's upcoming concert, I'd like to post some of the songs he played on his Sole Inhabitants tour, which I saw the last time he came to town:"Leipzig is Calling""One of Our Submarines""Live in a Suitcase""Flying North""One of Our Submarines"(You can download the Sole Inhabitants podcasts directly from his website.)And then I'd also like to include this song, because I think the lyrics & music are beautiful:And just for the heck of it, here's an 8...

2007-09-17 11:03:00
In this post, I'd like to discuss the Turk ish singer & performer, Tarkan Tevetoğlu. He's been a long-time favorite recording artist of mine. Although he's not as popular or well known in the States, he's very popular internationally, and has a particularly large fan base in Europe, Latin America, Russia, & Australia.I don't feel like regurgitating the story of his life, his background or the entirety of his musical career, but if you're interested in reading about his music & his life you can read either read this extensive & well-written article (by Ali Yildirim) &/or the official biography displayed on Tarkan's official fan website. (Click on the "biography" link at the top of the page.)Over the last few years he's spent some considerable time living in America (NYC), learning English, & recording his first English album. Several years ago, he was taken under the wing of Atlantic Records founder/executive, Ahmet Ertegun, with the intention of m...

YEA! YEA! YEA! At long last, the "seeing double" post display issue is now FIXED! A wonderful, very helpful woman named Bonnie came to my rescue. PLEASE, I'd REALLY appreciate a response as soon as possible. For both new posts & old posts, the content in the body of the posts is now displaying in doubles. I'm not sure what to do! I've checked the Blogger help sites & can't find anything about this. Also, just to clarify: I did try reposting the articles from scratch, but I'm still seeing double. I think this is a web database problem that needs a Blogger tech support person. Can someone from Blogger tech support please help me?! My site is h...

Help, We're All Seeing DOUBLE!
2007-09-06 01:48:00
Don't worry, you are not going crazy. Nor do you need your eyes checked for double vision. (Hey, that reminds of the similarly titled song by Foreigner.) For some reason my blog is showing double posts, even when the actual post itself has only been listed once. Thankfully, the problem seems to be only happening on this particular blog, & not on my 5 other blogs. I'm going to contact Google's tech support to see if anyone can help fix this. Has any of you other Blogspot/Blogger people ever experienced this problem before? (My guess is that I might've unknowingly been blogging (i.e., writing files to the server) during a system maintenance period & so, perhaps some of this data got screwed up because of it. I was in IT for 15+ years, so I'm familiar with these types of problems & wouldn't be surprised if that's what happened.)So please try to ignore the kooky display issues until I can get a resolution from Google support. Hopefully, they'll get back to me soon & can f...

Review of "Tom Dowd & The Language of Music"

I just saw this great documentary on Atlantic Records' super-wiz sound engineer & producer, Tom Dowd, who's worked with greats like Aretha Franklin, the Allman Brothers, Dizzy Gillespie, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, & many, many others. The documentary is called, "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music " (2003).I highly recommend it to anyone who loves watching documentaries about music history, or hearing personal recollections about musical greats as well as the backstories of bands/musical artists. And you don't have to be a sound engineer to understand or enjoy it!Also, here are some more detailed reviews of the documentary, if you'd like to find out more information:NPR articleIMDB referenceTom Dowd's Family WebsiteAlso, on a cursory note, there's a good article about Clapton, with a brief reference to Tom Dowd, on the blog, The Music. Musical Tangents & Wanderings Into The Past
2007-09-01 11:04:00
In my last post, I mentioned the group Slowdive, which got me thinking about the eponymously named song by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Then, that got me in the mood to hear music from this group. So, I've decided to post some of my Siouxsie faves here:"Face to Face" (From the "Batman Returns" soundtrack)"Passenger""Arabian Nights""Israel""Hong Kong Garden""Cities in Dust""Dear Prudence""Christine""Overground""Love In A Void""Skin" (Live, 1981)"Swimming Horses""Painted Bird" (with Robert Smith)"Sin In My Heart""Switch" (Live, 1981)I don't care what some rabid "purist" fans say about "The Rapture" being a crappy, sell-out album. I thought it had some great songs on it. The songs "Not Forgotten," "Forever," "The Double Life," "Love Out Me," & "Sick Child" are particularly good - atmospheric & hauntingly beautiful. I've posted the videos for these songs below, so listen for yourself & form your own opinion:"Not Forgotten""Forever""The Double Life" - I couldn't find a video clip...

"Electrik Muse" Has Gone to Greener Pastures......
2007-08-29 00:39:00
For those of you wondering where my other music blog, "Electrik Muse : Explorations in Electronica," has gone, I've decided to merge it with this blog. Please note that, as of today, "Electrik Muse" is no longer available for public viewing, & all future electronica-related posts will now appear on "Music Unbound" instead. Also, there's no need to fret about not being able to view your favorite videos from the old site, because all previous, existing posts from this extinct blog have been migrated here, to "Music Unbound," as well.Since "Music Unbound" is about ALL genres, this obviously includes electronica. Plus, it's just easier to write about electronica in one place, as opposed to two. ;-)I've also decided to shutter some of my other blogs as well (i.e., the film blog, cat blog, fashion blog, etc.), since it's way too hard to juggle numerous blogs AND run my businesses AND also try to have a life. So, if it's between having a life & blogging, it's not exactly a hard c...

2007-08-28 22:43:00
Tonight, I'd like to feature one of my favorite groups, The Prodigy . Here are videos of every single song from one of my favorite Prodigy albums, Fat of the Land . (Now, as you might notice, not all of the videos are the original videos produced by Prodigy, but I was most interested in featuring their music versus showing the original videos. Also the original video for "Smack My B*tch Up" is rather graphic & not exactly appropriate for the general viewing public.)Unless you've been living under a rock for the past ten years or are over 40 years old, chances are you've atleast heard of this group, even if you aren't already familiar with this album. If you're under 40 & haven't heard of this group, please go & have a little cry in the corner. And, if you consider yourself to be well-versed in electronica & have still never heard of them, smack yourself repeatedly & feel ashamed to have ever claimed you know anything about electronica. ;-)Take a listen:"Smack My B*tch Up...
