The famous Mods and Rockers Bank Holiday clashes - this one was Brighton 1964 as shown on ITV. It was, of course, long before my time, being as I am only 34 (inside leg that is)but some of you will no doubt remember it well.I wonder how many police with Lazers, Phasers and Tazers would need to be deployed these days.

More News from the September Club Night
2007-09-18 12:11:00
I must give Eric Whitehouse a mention as he kindly brought me a present - a Vintage sixties Live T-Shirt no less which I wore with pride all night much to the envy of the assembled crowd.Eric also brought along Stan Laundon who is well known in the area for his "Country Time" programme on BBC Radio Cleveland which he presented for 21 years. What I did not know until the other night was that Stan also worked with the inimitable Joe Brown for several years.Have a look at Stan's web site - http://www.stanlaundon.com/ - for a wealth of interesting Sixties related information. All in all we were treated to over three hours of top quality non-stop live Sixties entertainment none of which would be possible without the considerable number of extremely talented backing musicians who come along month after month and give their time, energy and enthusiasm. Thanks guys - you all know who you are.Next month - Thursday October 11th - features a guest spot from top Dutch Sixties tribute band Have M...

Rumours Rife at September Club Night
2007-09-17 10:54:00
The September Club Night opened amidst widespread rumours that Vintage Sixties Live were about to move to another venue and also that a cover charge was to be introduced. Both of these fabrications were quickly and firmly refuted by Big Jim, who we were delighted to welcome back as compere for the evening.Organisers, the Two Alans, paid tribute to the Management and Staff of Tudhoe Victory Club, who have, along with the many performers and musicians over the last 15 months , done everything in their power to make Vintage Sixties Live the success it is. They assured everyone that there are no plans to move anywhere. They also confirmed that the club nights would remain free of charge, although due to Health and Safety requirements at the Club, it was necessary to strictly enforce a "first come - first served" policy for the audience meaning possible disappointment for late-comers.As usual guests and supporters had travelled from a wide area including this month - Dunfermline, Yarm and ...

Peter (on the right with his knee on the amp) came across this pic taken in 1964 on the occasion of Sarah 's coming out party (I wouldn't have said the dress was that low-cut). She is seen here with local group the Foot Tappers.(Click to enlarge)Sarah was the daughter of Major Ruffer and the bash took place in a marquee at Stokesley.Where are you now Sarah - the lads fancy a return booking.

The Crazy Rockers - The Carioca(1963)
2007-08-21 09:48:00
There were quite a few very good Dutch Indo-rock bands out there in the Sixties. This is one of them - the Crazy Rockers - recorded in 1963They were a rock & roll group from The Hague featuring members of Indonesian and Surinamese origin. This group existed from 1961 'til 1966; mostly touring in Germany. Members: Harry Berg (first dr, later g, ex-Real Room Rockers, to Dick Scott & Barons), Eddie Chatelin (v, g, ex-Real Room Rockers), Woody Brunings (v, g, to Residents), Pim Veeren (b, ex-René & Alligators, to Residents) and Sidney Rampersadt (first v, later dr, ex-Black Dynamites). By the end of 1965, Sidney was replaced by Boy Brostowski (dr, ex-Danny & Favourites, to Dick Scott & Barons) and the group was also expanded with keyboardplayer Jack van Rossum (to Dick Scott & Barons). In 1964, Eddie made a few singles with his own group Eddy & Crazy Jets Show.

Sounds Incorporated
2007-08-19 20:07:00
Great clip of one of my favourite groups of the Sixties playing their hit version of the William Tell Overture.Alan Holmes (Boots)David Glyde (Griff West)John Gillard (John St.John)Barrie Cameron (Baz Elmes)Dick Thomas (Wes Hunter)Richard Anthony Newman (Tony Newman) 'Sounds Incorporated's own UK success with singles was very modest in comparison to their reputation as live musicians, but they managed two minor hits while still with Epstein. Through this association they soon found themselves backing Epstein's stars and can even be heard on the Beatles track 'Good Morning, Good Morning' from the 'Sergeant Pepper' album. They also opened the Beatles legendary show at New York's Shea Stadium.Their greatest success was actually in Australia where their 'William Tell' went all the way to the #1 spot- despite passing almost unnoticed at home! However, as the 1960s progressed the group began to disintegrate. First off, Tony Newman joined Jeff Beck's group and later went on to w...

The Gamblers on www.billyfury.com
2007-08-16 10:24:00
Just spent a very pleasant hour browsing this fantastic site - http://www.billyfury.com/ - packed with info on the UK Rock and Roll legend whose music was, and still is, very popular in the North East.It is believed to be the biggest web site in the world devoted to a single singer.Isn't it wonderful to know that Billy's name and career are being kept alive by such dedicated folks. One of the interesting things I found there was a reference to our own Tyneside group The G amblers who were Billy's backing group for a while during the mid-Sixties. Harry, who runs the site, has generously given permission for the detail to be copied on to the Gamblers page on to our Vintage Sixties Live web site here, but I would strongly recommend a visit (or three) to Billy's own site so it can be viewed in context.

VSL August Club Night
2007-08-12 07:23:00
Well. we did not really know what to expect as we prepared for this month's club night. We were in the height of the holiday season, the weather was absolutely beautiful and we knew in advance that several of our regulars would be replacing their love of Sixties Music with a more than healthy indulgence in at least one of the other famous S's - Sun, Sand and Sanatogen!I was still out of action with a bad back so we were delighted when Big Jim kindly offered to MC again. Thanks a lot Jim - it is really appreciated. In the event we need not have worried as it proved to be an evening of treats and surprises for the near capacity audience.Have you ever noticed how most of the best female vocal group names start with an S - the Scissor Sisters, the Spice Girls and Sister Sledge - well we had the angelic Spenny Sisters, Paula and her friend, appearing together for the first time since being asked to leave the convent. And there was more. We also had two proper sisters Emma and Joanne, brou...

Don Arden RIP - Another one bites the dust.
2007-08-06 21:33:00
This is copied from the Daily Telegraph 26 July 2007Don Arden , who died on Saturday aged 81, rejoiced in his reputation as the most infamous manager in the history of rock music - a reputation which led to him being known variously as "Mr Big", "The English Godfather" and "The Al Capone of Pop".Don Arden was born Harry Levy on January 4 1926 at Cheetham Hill, Manchester. In a long and colourful career, he was responsible for building the careers of such performers as Gene Vincent, the Small Faces, Electric Light Orchestra and Black Sabbath. But he became best known for his fiercely uncompromising business methods, which were alleged to include beatings, kneecappings, threats of defenestration and the frequent deployment of muscular assistants, sometimes with firearms. In later years he also achieved a sort of reflected fame as the father of the television personality Sharon Osbourne, whose similarly forthright demeanour led her own brother once to describe her as "Don in a skirt".Ard...

Beatles at the Royal Variety 1963
2007-08-01 10:41:00
Anyone remember this classic clip from the 1963 Royal Variety Show when John tells the people in the cheap seats to clap and the rich folks to rattle their jewellery? It is also notable for the fact that you could actually hear them sing - which in itself was a rare occasion at a live concert.

Thumbs Carllile
2007-07-31 08:17:00
Here is an ultra rare clip from the Ozark Jubilee of the Bill Wimberly house band, with Thumbs Carlille and Curly Chalker taking turns pummeling the old chestnut... wow! And for no extra charge you get Red Foley's rambling, nonsensical outcue. Enjoy!Which ever way his name is spelt - Carlille, Carlisle, Carlyle, Carllile, Carlile - this guy crops up time and time again whenever the subject of guitar maestros is discussed. His unique way of playing came about because, as a child, Thumbs used to sneak into his sister's bedroom and play on her lap steel with a slide bar even though she had banned him.She caught him and hid the slide bar but he still sneaked in to play the guitar the only way he could.........using his thumb as a bar - hence the nickname Thumbs and the rest, as they say, is history.Recently, by pure chance, he cropped up more than usual at Vintage Sixties Live.First of all, Eric Whitehouse turned up at the club night with two of his LPs, which are like gold dust aroun...

Elvis' Drugs For Sale
2007-07-30 10:31:00
The King may have left the building but his prescription pills are still here: A bottle that contained Elvis Presley's prescription antihistamines was sold this week at an auction for more than $2,600. That's a mighty expensive prescription plan! While the bottle still contained some of The King's original pills, L.A. County police told auction house Julien's that it would be a federal crime to sell the bottle with pills included. Other unusual Hollywood ephemera sold during the auction included a gold-plated gun owned by the Elvis, which sold for more than $28,000; Alfred Hitchcock's passport, which went for more than $19,000; and a prop umbrella once used by Marilyn Monroe for $42,000. The umbrella will become part of the collection of the Museum of Style Icons in County Kildare, Ireland.
