Brian Wilson- Adult Child
2008-04-10 20:38:00
I don't know much behind the making of this album other than the fact it was never officially released, and it was recorded around 1977. I put this up there as one of Brian Wilson / The Beach Boys great albums, and it's a shame that it has never been officially released."Life Is For The Living""Hey Little Tomboy""Deep Purple""H.E.L.P. Merle Haggard
2008-04-06 19:57:00
Country singer Merle Haggard turns 71 today. I had the pleasure of seeing him open for Bob Dylan in 2005, and he was a blast to watch. I wasn't too familiar with his music before that, but I knew who he was. Since then I've gotten into his music quite a bit and find him to be one of the greats in country music, and vastly underrated. Here is the show I was at, it's obviously hard to convey the enjoyment of the show without actually being there, but I think it's still a lot of fun to listen to. Larry Norman- Only Visiting This Planet
2008-03-15 05:29:00
Well, I had to completely re-write this post after visiting his homepage and finding out that Larry died last month. I had a really hard time believing I missed that news, I have been such a big fan of Larry's for years, and he was a favorite of my family's as well. I hadn't thought about Larry for quite a while now, and although I knew he had been in very poor health for years, it still sent a chill down my spine to visit his website and read that he had passed away. Larry is widely considered the founding father of Christian rock & roll, and had a considerable impact on popular music, not just Christian music as shown by this entry in Wikipedia:By 1971, TIME magazine was reporting on the growth of the Jesus Movement, and while Larry Norman took some steps to distance himself from it,[5] he had become the most popular musician among its followers. TIME Magazine reported that Eric Clapton had become a "convert of the Jesus Movement," and a 1971 cover article also named member...

Jeff Healey
2008-03-06 11:34:00
The world lost an amazing guitarist this past week in Jeff Healey. The following is a press release from the NY Times, followed by a show of him and his band from 1990. "Jeff Healey, a Canadian guitarist, singer and songwriter whose band sold millions of blues-rock records and who also pursued a passion for old-time jazz, playing the trumpet and clarinet, died on Sunday in Toronto. He was 41.He died of lung cancer, his publicists said.Mr. Healey, who was blind, played his guitar with the instrument flat on his lap, resulting in what Guitar Player magazine called “astoundingly fluid bends and vibrato.” He blended jazz, rock and the blues.Mr. Healey’s greatest success came in the late 1980s, when his band recorded the album “See the Light.” It reached platinum status in the United States by selling more than one million copies and eventually two million worldwide. A single from that album, “Angel Eyes,” was the Jeff Healey Band’s only Top 40 hit, reaching No. 5...
Hilary McRae
2008-03-03 11:18:00
Hilary McRae is a 21 year old singer/songwriter who will be releasing her debut album in the spring of this year, on the Hear Music label. She reminds me a lot of Joss Stone, in that she has a soulful throaty sounding voice and has really good beats behind it. Recording her first demos at age 16, her debut has been a long time in the making and looks to be a very promising start to a sure to be successful career. Below is a link to the song "Consider Me Gone", as well as a link to her website/myspace page which has more songs streaming.Consider Me GoneHilary McRae.com *** Myspace

Richard Julian
2008-02-29 05:55:00
"On a hot summer morning on Manhattan’s west side, the sight of a debutante in a black dress, wearing what appeared to be a most uncomfortable pair of high heels, planted the seed for the title track on Richard Julian ’s latest, Sunday Morning in Saturday’s Shoes. Julian recalls. “There was no way she’d gotten dressed that way that morning.” Such attentive observation is a staple of Julian’s songwriting, on full display in his fifth full-length album (and second for Manhattan.) When asked for a reference point for his style, the songwriter mentions filmmaker Alexander Payne (Sideways, Election) before mentioning other musicians. Julian’s screenplay-worthy craftsmanship is a skill that’s earned him entrance to a mutual admiration society that includes artists like Randy Newman, Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt. In fact, it was Raitt who initially suggested producer Mitchell Froom (Los Lobos, Richard Thompson, Elvis Costello and many others), who signed on to help Julian ...
Santana-Supernatural
2008-02-24 19:23:00
I can still remember watching the Grammys in 2000 and seeing this album win countless awards. This was before I had really become aware of music outside of what was on the radio, or "pop" music. I was watching Santana on the Tonight Show later that night after the Grammys and thinking "what is this old guy doing with this young R & B group?". And thus my musical education really began, I started to research Carlos Santana and realized there was so much music out there I had never heard that was mind blowing, and in the last 8 years my music library has grown into thousands of CD's ranging from Bach to Tupac to Frank Sinatra. Supernatural is a classic album from one of the greatest guitarists I've had the pleasure of listening to, and it probably is up there with one of the biggest impact albums on my life because of the way it opened my eyes to new types of music.Maria Maria (w/ The Product B & G)Put Your Lights On (w/ Everlast)Smooth (w/ Rob Thomas)Santana.com *** Myspac...
Fiona Apple- Extraordinary Machine
2008-02-22 04:40:00
Fiona Apple , brooding, brainy belter and capital-A artist of near forbidding depth, begins her much gossiped-over third CD on a lark. The title track, one of two songs produced by Jon Brion before the label dispute that prompted hip-hop producer Mike Elizondo (50 Cent, Eminem) to step in, sounds like a Judy Garland number slathered with irony or something Rufus Wainwright might have had a hand in--strings soar, beats bump around skittishly, and notes require a ladder. But playful as it is, by the time the chorus kicks in it's clear why the world has missed Fiona Apple so much. Young female artists who have stepped into the spotlight since she fled it six years ago-- Nellie McKay and Joss Stone spring to mind for their cleverness and heat, respectively--seem slight in comparison. With every track ticked off, in fact, Extraordinary Machine moves listeners a little closer to what might be a correct assumption: that everything they've dipped into since 1999's When the Pawn ... was f...

Buddy, Bopper & Ritchie
2008-02-03 20:31:00
49 years ago today, the world lost 3 of the most talented musicians it would ever see. Buddy Holly, JP "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and Ritchie Valens were killed when their airplane crashed in an Iowa cornfield in the early morning of February 3rd, 1959. Buddy Holly, aged 22 was well known for such hits as "Oh Boy", "Peggy Sue" and "Maybe Baby", was arguably the most infuental singer in the past 50 years, having an influence on artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, to name just a few. The Big Bopper is best known for his song "Chantilly Lace", was the oldest of the three, aged 28. He had a 4 year old son at the time of his death, Jay Richardson, who performs tribute concerts around the world in memory of his father. Ritchie Valens was the youngest of the three, aged only 17 at the time of his death, best known for his smash hit "La Bamba", Valens is often referred to as a pioneer of Spanish rock and roll. Eddie Cochran recorded a tribute song to them title...
John Neilson
2008-02-02 01:40:00
Breaking up is always hard to do, but sometimes, it works out for the best. John Neilson was only 24 when he was engaged and prepared to celebrate his wedding at his mother’s farm in Mount Airy, MD on the night of August 8, 2003. As fate would have it, John and his fiancée called the wedding off and hoping to find himself, John moved across the USA to Los Angeles, CA to pursue his career in songwriting and to heal his heart. Things haven’t been as easy at is seems on TV in the Hollywood Hills, but John has managed to make a name for himself in Los Angeles and across the USA with his songwriting and performances that range from urban blues to pop, to alt-country, southern rock, and everything in between. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2004, John has managed to become a regular performer at the Legendary Hotel Café in Hollywood, as well as playing at the Troubadour, Viper Room, Key Club, House of Blues, and other staples of the LA music scene. In addition to his Los Angeles succ...

Rue Melo
2008-01-27 20:50:00
I had a real hard time figuring this group out. Usually I can fit artists into a certain genre and get a feel for the kind of music they produce, but this group was really different. They just make good music, not necessarily any certain genre, but to be honest, there is a need for more groups like this these days. Going from R & B to folk to French and Spanish language songs. Very eclectic and very enjoyable, to say the least. One look at their list of influences and you can see why they make such good music: Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, The Fugees. Look for big things from this group in the future. Here is the current tour schedule for Rue Melo, as well as an MP3 and some links to find out more about them. Jan 30 2008 8:00P ...
Lupe Fiasco- The Cool
2008-01-23 03:27:00
I had just about given up on the current crop of hip hop artists when I heard something so different than all the other junk (for lack of a better word) on the radio these days. In a genre filled with artists like 50 Cent and Soulja Boy, it was refreshing to hear an artist like Lupe Fiasco come through my speakers. I'll give a plug to the station I was listening to when I heard the song "The Cool est", because for my money it's the best FM radio station in the Minneapolis area and has given me exposure to a ton of artists I wouldn't have heard otherwise. Click here to visit The Current. But I digress...Coming off the heels of his debut album "Food & Liquor" (nominated for a Grammy), Lupe follows it up with "The Cool", one of the best hip hop albums from start to finish I've heard in years. During the making of the album Lupe lost his father and a close friend to death, as well as his mentor to a prison sentence, and those themes are prevalent throughout the album.Hip Hop Save...
Bobby Fuller
2008-01-20 04:01:00
With his blatant reverence for Buddy Holly, fellow Texan Bobby Fuller was a bit of an anomaly in the mid-'60s. With his Stratocaster guitar and brash, full sound, at his best Fuller sounded like Holly might have had he survived into the '60s. Cracking the Top 30 in 1966 with a cover of Holly's "Love's Made a Fool of You" and the Top Ten with "I Fought the Law" (written by one-time Cricket Sonny Curtis), Fuller had just become a star when he died in mysterious circumstances in a parked car in Hollywood (the police thought it was a suicide, just about everyone who knew him disagreed). Fuller's relatively short period of national stardom actually crowned a good half-dozen years of recording, during which he released many outstanding tracks. After a few local singles in his hometown of El Paso in the early '60s, he moved to California with his combo in 1964, and briefly had aspirations of playing surf music before hooking up with producer Bob Keane. In the short time he recorded f...

Goodtimes Goodtimes
2008-01-15 01:04:00
When listening to an artist for the first time, I will usually try to compare them to an artist I am familiar with. With the singer/band Goodtime Goodtimes, there are many names that come to mind. Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Tim Buckley, and Mic Christopher. One quality all those artists have is the ability to help you relate to the music by reminding you of real life situations, such as lost love and pain. I was struck by the same feelings when listening to Goodtimes Goodtimes and was instantly hooked. A lyric in the song "Kids" goes: "I was born to let you know I love you", and anyone who has ever been in love knows exactly how that feels and how personal that lyric is. I've enjoyed what I've heard so far from this artist and look forward to hearing more in the future, hopefully you'll agree as well. Here are a few songs to sample, if you like them be sure to consider buying the CD titled "Glue". I will provide a link at the bottom of this post.Sunshine SunshineKidsSea ShantyDesireGo...
4Hero- Morning Child
2008-01-13 01:48:00
From 4Hero's website: Raw Canvas Records are proud to present the long awaited 1st single from 4hero's stunning album 'Play With The Changes'.'Morning Child ' is an instant classic showcasing signature arrangement & sweeping live strings accompanied by the sweet vocals of Carina Andersson making this track an anthemic soundtrack piece standing out for 2007.Personal write-up: Well, what can I say about a song like this? When I first heard it, I thought I was given the wrong link to the song, I could have sworn I was listening to Diana Ross back in the 60's and 70's. It's been a long time since I've heard a voice as beautiful as singer Carina Andersson. If there was more music like this being made these days, the music industry would have no trouble selling their product, and it's a shame singers like Britney Spears get more radio play than a group like this who absolutely deserves it. I wish nothing but the best for this group and wouldn't be surprised if they are a ...

Amos Lee
2008-01-07 05:34:00
With a dusky soul voice and a knack for literate, thoughtful lyrics, singer/songwriter Amos Lee is a throwback to a more organic-sounding pop time period. Calling to mind a mix of Bill Withers, Arthur Lee, and James Taylor, Lee croons through his mellow eponymous debut with a singular sense of his time and place that adds weight to his already heartfelt songs. Much like Taylor's Sweet Baby James and Withers' Still Bill, Amos Lee is an album about an artist's life and loves in a world that often seems at odds with his desires. On "Arms of a Woman," Lee sings "I am at ease in the arms of a woman/Although now most of my days are spent alone/A thousand miles from the place I was born/But when she wakes she takes me back home." Similarly, the darkly evocative "Black River" has Lee in a gospel mood, drawing comparisons between a swift-moving river, God, and whiskey, while the brisk country-rock-inflected "Love in the Lies" finds him proclaiming that "The world ain't no harder than it...
Tracy Chapman
2008-01-03 10:46:00
Tracy Chapman exploded out of the Boston folk scene in the late eighties, carrying the acoustic guitar-playing singer/songwriter mantle to a more political and socially conscious level than had recently been achieved. Her deep alto and throttled vocal delivery, combined with attentively scrutinized social scenarios presented in a simple, accessible manner, rocketed Tracy to the top of the charts and into the Grammy record books. Instrumentally crisp and minimal, Tracy Chapman is a compelling statement from the no-holds-barred singer/songwriter, stealing the focus away from the popular folk mafia.Chapman expresses a heretofore unmined, feminist, disenfranchised point of view--from the helpless-but-hopeful underclass of the smash hit "Fast Car," to the defiant politicos of "Talkin' `Bout A Revolution." In regards to other issues, Tracy responds to Suzanne Vega's "Luka" with her own a capella song about domestic violence, "Behind The Wall"; and the percussive "Mountains O' Things" i...

Songs of 2007

Here are my top songs of 2007, some of them are fairly popular, but some of them are probably not well known by the majority of people. Hopefully some of you will find a new artist you can enjoy, which is the main goal of this blog.
