Even though I wasn't even born at the time of this performance, and I was only 7 when Richard finally stopped doing stand up, I can still appreciate the icon that he was. For my money, Richard Pryor was one of the funniest men to ever live, and probably will always be. His humor was so far ahead of it's time that most of it is relevant to this day, more that 30 years later. I first knew of Pryor through his buddy movies with Gene Wilder, before I even knew about his stand up. I was in for quite a shock when comparing the relative cleanliness of his movie to his stand up. A lot of his material is not for naive ears, but if you can handle it, it will leave you wanting more when it's over. In the 1950's, Dorothy Dandridge was a celebrated beauty, a mainstay of the supper-club circuit, and Hollywood's first international African-American star. Today she is probably remembered more for her troubled life and early death than she is for her accomplishments. This album presents an often-overlooked truth about Dandridge: that she was an exceptional vocalist.Most of the material here comes from a 1958 session, unreleased until now, on which Dandridge is backed by an augmented Oscar Peterson Trio. Nipping at the heels of wiz-kid blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who debuted at age 18, comes 16-year-old Jonny Lang , the most soulful guitar slinger ever to make it out of junior high school. Lang's debut, much like Shepherd's Ledbetter Heights, features a mix of choice covers and co-written originals. But whereas Heights leans in a Delta-blues direction, Lang's blues has more of an R&B flavor.The Clavinet and Hammond B-3 organ on the title track and "Hit The Ground Running" help give Lie To Me a funky swagger. Whatever the case, 2Pac re-emerged hardened and hungry with All Eyez on Me, the first double-disc album of original material in hip-hop history. With all the controversy surrounding him, 2Pac seemingly wanted to throw down a monumental epic whose sheer scope would make it an achievement of itself. But more than that, it's also an unabashed embrace of the gangsta lifestyle, backing off the sober self-recognition of Me Against the World. Sure, there are a few reflective numbers and dead-homiez tributes, but they're much more romanticized this time around.
