Chris Walla: Field Manual
2008-01-29 05:29:00
Chris Walla: Field Manual Death Cab for Cutie founder and noted producer, Chris Walla decides to beat his band to the punch and releases his debut solo album just months before we are promised a polarizing Death Cab for Cutie record.I can't tell if this is a genius move on Walla's part or not. On his recent rash of promotion for this solo record he has said that the new Death Cab album is finished but it will be a record that some fans will hate. The album is said to be much heavier and dissonant than anything they've done. Meanwhile, what he is there to promote is his indie pop solo debut. Is it possible that Walla sabotaged DCFC's new record so he could sell more solo albums? After listening to his solo album it seems doubtful. While indie rock conspiracy theorists may wish it to be so, Walla hardly ever sounds like Death Cab on his solo record.Essentially, Walla's solo record is exactly what you would expect from someone who has been in a successful band for a while and f...

Black Mountain: In the Future
2008-01-27 18:32:00
Black Mountain : In the Future After releasing their eponymous debut on Jagjaguwar in 2005, Black Mountain gained national acclaim. Such reputable sources as Amazon.com, Rolling Stone, and Pitchfork Media all gave the band rave reviews.Since then they've released a few EPS, but In the Future is their second full length album.Black Mountain's sound is kind of like a bad acid trip. The music is dark and moody with noticeable influences from bands like Led Zepplin and Quicksilver Messenger Service. They remind me a little of TV on the Radio mixed with a not as quirky Ween.Whether that description makes them sound appealing to you or not is really a personal preference. For me, the album is listenable but certainly not the kind of thing I would listen to often. The major complaint I have is the length of their songs. "Tyrants" is kind of like Black Mountain's "Stairway to Heaven" and much like "Stairway to Heaven" it just seems to go on forever. In the end, "Tyrants" adds up to ov...

Daedelus: Live at Low End Theory
2008-01-25 05:14:00
Daedelus: Live at Low End Theory The always busy LA producer Daedelus releases his first ever live record. Since he started releasing albums in 2001, Daedelus has released nine solo studio albums. These don't include his work with Busdriver, Radioinactive, and Adventure Time. He also has released a slew of EPs.Live at Low End Theory sounds basically like a rejected Fabriclive disc. All the "songs" meld seemlessly together and create a 45+ minute long tapistry of dance. The album reminds me a little of one of my favorite live dance records Fatboy Slim's On the Floor at the Boutique. The album is mostly a dance record but clearly showcase Daedelus' hip hop side and eclectic taste. His live mixing is pretty much flawless and the record offers a wide selections of samples.Towards the end of the record there are a couple transitions that I feel are questionable at best. Overall, it's a good record and a fun listen. It definitely has piqued my interest to see Daedelus live.Ratin...

Aster: Some Things Seldom Heard Of
2008-01-24 04:32:00
Aster: Some Things Seldom Heard OfThe Austin, TX indie rock duo Aster release their debut via Corp! Corp! Records.Tim Hussman and Bryan Ellis make lush indie pop which relies on its wall of sound and often its mundaneness to create beauty. The band feels like a tough sell to me. In many ways they remind me of Aloha, every song they write has pop elements to it but it seems like they try their hardest to not write "pop" songs. The first song on Some Things Seldom Heard Of is "Run Away From the Suits". The song has a dance beat and utilizes glockenspiel to create what could be a great indie pop song ala Boy Least Likely To. Instead the song drags out for over 7 minutes and eventually starts embracing a "wall of sound" drone. This song is really indicative of the entire album. Almost every song on the CD has elements I really enjoy but the songs over just feel like they confused as to where they should or what they are.In the end, I am posting an MP3 called "We Won't Remember". Th...

The Whitsundays: The Whitsundays
2008-01-23 05:24:00
The Whitsundays : The WhitsundaysThe eponymous debut album from the Canadian indie rock outfit The Whitsundays is a journey through the greatest moments in Britain's musical history.Although our neighbors to our North have produced many notable musical acts themselves, the Whitsundays' sound focus' across the pond. You could easily call their sound retro but that wouldn't necessarily explain it.They combine the lush pop of the Zombies, the guitar work of the Shadows, and the haunting vocals of Pink Floyd. The sound is reminiscent of current retro acts the Coral or Band of Bees.Although the sound is more than eerily familiar, the band makes it clear they are not paying tribute to the generation who's music they borrow their sound and they are entranced with the generation. They are straight out of the time machine and don't quite know what a CD is.The sound of this band just really gets to me. Each note seems so meticulously placed to make it seem as though the last 30 years...
Hello, Blue Roses: The Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed To Capture Yo
2008-01-21 15:56:00
Hello, Blue Roses : The Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed To Capture Your Beauty...Daniel Bejar is a critics darling. From Destroyer to New Pornographers to Swan Lake, he has been the indie's scene brightest star for this decade. Now he records with his love interest Sydney Vermont to form Hello, Blue Roses. The sweetheart duo records music not unlike that of Destroyer but Sydney handles most vocals with Daniel contributing mostly backup vocals. The instrumentation is mostly acoustic with occasional sparse use of percussion and keyboards. The music is a combination of femme folk and that "je ne sais pas" of Destroyer.Sometimes Sydney's drifty vocals and the mellowness of the music send the listener into a lull, luckily The Portrait contains Dylanesque party songs like "St Angela" to wake the listener up at the perfect time.In the end, Hello Blue Roses doesn't necessarily meet the expectation that Destroyer has set, then again I've never rated a Destroyer record less than ...
Chance: Tell a Friend Part 1
2008-01-21 02:39:00
Chance: Tell a Friend Part 1Tell a Friend Pt 1 is Chance's first full length mixtape after appearing on mixtapes from DJ Lazy K, Tapemasters Inc, DJ Trigga and DJ Mino. It is a collection of material recorded since 2005 and 2007. It is a warm up and introduction to The Misadventures of George Kush, Chance's street album coming in March.I know it's hard to take a release seriously with a cover like this, but Chance does have some upside. Chance's story isn't a really unique one. He's a self-proclaimed "retired criminal" who's bio claims "lyrical acrobatics, inventive wordplay and true to life storytelling". I'm not in the position to judge anyone's life story, but his life story seems to be the same life story as many current rappers' stories. He reminds me of a combination of Jadakiss and T.I. His lyrics are closer to those of T.I. but his voice, cadence, and flow seem to be strongly influenced by Jadakiss. Never is it more apparently than when he flows over Jada'...

Soft: Gone Faded
2008-01-20 05:18:00
Soft: Gone FadedThe Brooklyn band Soft has made built themselves into song writing legends. Supposedly formed in 2003, they practiced 5 nights a week in their Williamsburg apartment writing songs. Four years later, they played no gigs but were ready to release their debut full length Gone Faded. When you hear it took four years for someone to make an album there is an expectation level there. The song writing heard on Gone Faded does not match up to the mythical tale that accompanies the album.Soft seems like one of those bands that is extremely meticulous song writers but they write in someone else's style. Their sound seems to mimic that of the Stone Roses with a little bit of Oasis and Teenage Fanclub thrown in.The band has potential but there is such thing as being too meticulous. Sometimes when you spend so much time trying to make something perfect it ends up being lackluster. Soft knows what sounds good but often times I don't think they understand their limitations or...

Sir Salvatore: Continental Breakfast
2008-01-19 01:01:00
Sir Salvatore: Continental Breakfast Sir Salvatore is a bay area indie rock band and Continental Breakfast is their second EP. The EP is digital only release.Sir Salvatore are not necessarily a unique project. Their sound is a composite of indie godfathers like Pavement and Pixies and post-punk mainstays like the Fall and Television.I am a fan of all of those bands I just compared Sir Salvatore to, so needless to say I am a fan of Sir Salvatore. The guitar is bouncy and whimsical and the drums are driving. The vocals are similar to those of Black Francis. The songs are all very catchy. As far as second EP's go, this seems like a good introduction to the band. It seems to summarize their sound well. I wish it was released on CD but as far as digital releases go this is one of the finest I've heard in a long while.Rating: 8.3/10MP3: Sir Salvatore "Ambalina"
Georgie James: Places
2008-01-17 04:16:00
Georgie James : Places I know the name sounds like it should be a solo artist but Georgie James is actually four people: John Davis (formerly of Q and Not U), Laura Burhenn, Andrew Black (formerly of The Explosion), and Michael Cotterman (formerly of The Loved Ones).Places is Georgie James' debut album. It was released on Saddle Creek Records in 2007. I know I'm a little late on this release but give me a break, it was a busy end of the year for me.The truth about Georgie James is their all star line-up is just the beginning of their appeal. Their dueling male and female vocals are reminiscent of the New Pornographers. The music is a great dancy indie pop similar to Mates of State. The things that makes Places great is also its biggest weakness. The album is poppy toa fault. The sugary sweet sound of 70s-era power pop is evident in every hand clap, every "bah bah bah" back-up vocal, and every whimsical piano riff.Rating: 7.0/10MP3: Georgie James "Only Cause You're Young"

J Wells disses Bishop Lamont
2008-01-15 15:53:00
I didn't realize anyone cared enough about Bishop Lamont to diss him but apparently J Wells has serious beef.I always thought Bishop Lamont was just a rapper who when his songs came on the radio I changed the station but it turns out he has a little more clout than that. He was taken under Dr Dre's wing in 2005. He is preparing to release his debut album sometime in the first quarter of 2008.Enjoy J Wells' diss track. It's a banger.MP3: J Wells "Just Don't Give a Fuck (Bishop Lamont Diss)"

Magnetic Fields: Distortion
2008-01-15 00:42:00
Magnetic Fields : Distortion Prolific singer songwriter Stephen Merritt returns with his band's eighth full length album. The album is the first since 2004's I which marked the band's first jaunt on to the Billboard charts.Distortion is less an album title and more a personal mission statement for the album. Merritt has always used the Magnetic Fields as an outlet to show his mastery of all genres. This album has the feel of somewhere in between The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Zombies. The album is glazed in a vintage fuzz with a lush pop feel.Stephen Merritt and Claudia Gonson seem to switch off lead vocal duty song to song. Stephen's songs for the most part are right on point with previous Magnetic Fields' efforts. Claudia Gonson on the other hand, I can barely stand any song she sings lead vocals on. It has nothing to do with her voice, it's more about the songs themselves.Rating: 4.9/10MP3: Magnetic Fields "Too Drunk To Dream"

The Terrordactyls: The Terrordactyls
2008-01-11 04:18:00
The Terrordactyls: The TerrordactylsThe duo known as the Terrordactyls is eerily similar to another famous duo. If you couldn't tell by the cover art, they have a little They Might Be Giants in them. The Terrordactyls lie somewhere in between freak-folk and quirky pop. They're songs all feature acoustic guitar and some sort of toy piano. They also augment these main instruments with kazoos and electronic drums. The lyrical content is generally insouciant. There are the obvious quirky songs like "Zombie Girl" and "Facelift", but then songs like "I Want to Cry" include lines like "Dolphins are like roller skates/They come in various sizes and shapes".They also have song like "Devices" which include guest vocals from Kimya Dawson. The dueling male/female vocals make for a cute, quirky love song that not many bands could pull off as successfully as the Terrordactyls.Rating: 8.2/10MP3: The Terrordactyls "Zombie Girl"
The Mumlers: Thickets & Stitches
2008-01-10 03:55:00
The Mumlers: Thickets & StitchesThe Mumlers bio starts off by calling them an "ensemble" and they're all "multi-instrumentalists" which immediately conjures up mental images of Arcade Fire or Beruit. Luckily for this listeners weary ears, the Mumlers do not follow down that indie rock path. They utilize instruments like cellos, violins, tubas, acoustic guitars, accordion, and something called a dobro? If nothing else, it's interesting music. The influences seem to span from indie pop and alt-country to Russian folk and R&B. "Shake That Medication" sounds like it could have been written by Stevie Wonder and "Whale Song" sounds like a Tom Waits ballad.Releases like this are always hard for me to review because they is little consistency from song to song. Each song seems like its own entity. The lack of carry over makes the album have little flow but when a band has as much talent as the Mumlers obviously have, it's hard to fault them for it. I think if they focus the...
The Vandelles: EP
2008-01-09 00:51:00
The Vandelles: EPAccording to their press release the Vandelles are described as Dick Dale mixed with The Jesus and Mary Chain. That sounds pretty promising. I've always been a sucker for surf rock and a little 80s post-punk never hurt anyone. At first listen, I'm not convinced they really sound like either band. Their vocals are drifty and distant. Their instruments all have vintage fuzz effects. A good portion of their music reminds me of the Velvet Underground. They write simple songs but definitely not punk songs and not necessarily songs that would appeal to a pop audience either."Swell to Heaven" is the the song closest to sounding like a Dick Dale tune. It has a beat similar to many of those 60s surf tunes like "California Sun", however I think it is as close to Velvet Underground's "Waiting for my Man". "Lovely Weather" is a dark mid-tempo jaunt that's reminiscent of 80s American Noir or its rebirth with bands like Interpol with just a little more distortion.Overa...
Top 27 albums of 2007
2008-01-02 04:48:00
27. Electric Six: I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being the MasterAfter their incredibly disappointing outing last year Switzerland, Electric Six returned in 2007 with their fourth full length album.I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being the Master, in addition to being an incredibly long album title, is a return to form for the band. The album is a mixture of "Danger! High Voltage" urgency and "Jimmy Carter" dark snarkiness. The album rocks hard and it filled with ironic hard rock anthems.26. Amy Winehouse: Back to BlackThe British songstress released her American debut this year. Her style is a slick combination of 1950's soul, jazz, and modern hip-hop sensibility. With such songs as "Me and Mr. Jones (Fuckery)", "Rehab", and "Addicted", Amy obviously chooses to sing about subject matter that most 50's soul groups wouldn't touch. Her lyrics have a certain shock factor, however it are these lyrics that separate her f...

STGA's Top 50 Songs of 2007: part 2
2007-12-30 07:08:00
25. Battles "Atlas"How often do we at STGA give props to experimental music? Not a whole lot, so when an experimental rock band like Battles makes the top songs of the year you know its something special. The song swings, the vocals are weird and really kind of creepy, and it all crescendos with a robot rock type feel. It truly is an epic song.MP3: Battles "Atlas"24. Rihanna feat Jay-Z "Umbrella"If you buy a new iMac pro, it comes with a program called Garage Band. "Umbrella" utilizes a shareware beat that comes on Garage Band called Vintage Funk Kit 03. How did a shareware beat become the biggest single of the summer? Rihanna's vocal performance and the lyrical content made the song inescapable this summer. And don't be fooled by Jay-Z's name on the song, his verse is forgettable at best. This song is all Rihanna.MP3: Rihanna feat Jay-Z "Umbrella"23. 50. Fall Out Boy "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race (Kanye West Remix)"As if it comes to a surprise to anyone, there is something about Kanye West that is special. He can take a bland pop punk song and turn it in to a hot dance track. Add in one of Kanye's most humorous verses ever and you have the only time Fall Out Boy will ever make one of my end of year posts.MP3: Fall Out Boy "This Aint A Scene, Its An Arms Race (Kanye West Remix)"49. Timbaland feat the Hives ?Throw it On Me?The Hives teamed up with Pharrell for several tracks on The Black and White Album however it was this collaboration with another noted hip hop producer that finds its way on to the countdown. The Hives snaky guitar riff and their catchy hook perfectly accentuate Timbaland's rapping.MP3: Timbaland feat The Hives "Throw It On Me"48. It was the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring except for STGA mofo! Tonight I have an MP3 for you, but more importantly I have an announcement. Tomorrow I am making a very special post. The post is the kind of thing you don't want to miss...at all...for anything. What I post tomorrow will only remain up for Christmas day. You'll have a 24 hour window to download what I post and after that it'll be gone forever...Tonight I have one of my favorite Christmas tunes. Rivers Cuomo: Alone
2007-12-22 01:12:00
Rivers Cuomo : AloneAfter the most disappointing album of their illustrious career, Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo releases his bedroom demos mostly from Weezer's early years.Rivers is often considered one of the most prolific and eccentric song writer in recent years. The demos compiled on this album are mostly from the 1990's which are considered Rivers' golden years. Alone may show Weezer fans exactly where the atrocities that became Make Believe.Five of the tracks come from the unreleased follow up to the Blue Album, Songs from the Black Hole. The songs have been floating around the internet for a while. "Who You Callin' Bitch?" contains lyrics like "He acts like he knows that he has a big dick. I despise him. I despise him! I despise him!" Lyrics like that remind us how he later went on to write "We Are All on Drugs".Another big chunk of songs come from pre-Blue Album demos. These demos are slightly better. I've had a long day so I'll keep this short. Today I post the Barenaked Ladies "Green Christmas ". I believe this track was originally released on one of the Maybe This Christmas and it later also appeared on the How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie soundtrack. If you never saw that movie, you're all too lucky. This song is really very good. I know the Barenaked Ladies don't get a lot of blog love, but I promise this is a quality track. Lupe Fiasco: The Cool
2007-12-19 05:10:00
Lupe Fiasco : The Cool When Lupe Fiasco burst onto the scene last year with his debut single "Kick, Push" he was being hailed as the next big thing in rap. A year later he releases the Cool which may leave the listener with more questions than ever.Lupe was hailed for his ability to make commercially viable music without having to resort to typical rap subjects. The Cool follows through with the same basic atypical subject matter. The problem on this album is the subject matter though. The album starts off with a weighty soliloquize from Iesha Jaco about political and social issues in society now and in the past. That tone does not leave the album often.Lupe spits rhymes about suicide and the war in Iraq in the most teenage way possible. He comes off as unintelligent in his psuedo-intellectual attempts. In other points in the album he completely abandons hip hop music all together. "Hello/Goodbye (Uncool)" features Unkle and sounds more like a jazz fusion jam session than anything...

In the end the Nor'Eastern of the century the weather channel would have us believe was coming was a little lackluster. Styles P: Super Gangster (Extraordinary Gentleman)
2007-12-18 03:14:00
Styles P: Super Gangster (Extraordinary Gentleman)Styles P releases his third studio album, the follow up to last years Time is Money. The Lox/D-Block member described Super Gangster as "street, dark Hip Hop".The first single from the album is "Blow Ya Mind". Produced by Swizz Beatz, it has all the signature elements of a Swizz Beatz hit record.Besides that track, the album is completely unaccessible to a mainstream audience. P makes it obvious that its not just an album title, he is Super Gangster. He seems much more concerned with his hood image than with making good music.Normally when a hip hop artist chooses not to go the mainstream route, I have no problem with that. But P makes "Blow Ya Mind" which is as mainstream as it gets, but the track sticks out like a sore thumb in the context of the album.Does Stlye P succeed with the album? His lyricism is good, the beats are mediocre at best, and thematically nothing stands out as surprising. If you're a long time P fan, the...

Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Inductee 08: Madonna
2007-12-16 20:54:00
They have announced the inductees into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame next year. Over the next few days I'll post up a little bit about each inductee. By far the biggest name being inducted is Madonna .There has been a good deal of discussion in music circles of whether or not an artist like Madonna should be inducted into a Hall of Fame for Rock n Roll. Although she's not a Rock n Roll artist per se, she is one of the most influential artists of the last three decades. She released her first single in 1982 but she didn't obtain mainstream success until the next year when she released her third single "Holiday". It was her venture into the Billboard top 20. She would return to the top 20 35 more times in her career. 25 years later, she is still as much of a icon as she was in the 80s. Her career, if nothing, is to be envied.According to both the 2007 Guinness Book of Records and Forbes, she is the top earning female singer in the world with an estimated net worth of over $325 ...
