Stop Being a Guitar Snob!
2007-09-25 21:51:00
Get ready for a semi-negative rant ATOMIC fans. If you could see my hand, you would see that I've had it up to here with guitar snobs. I'm sick and tired of the conversation about "who's best in G3," "Satriani isn't as good as Yngwie Malmsteen because he doesn't shred," "your favorite guitarist sucks more than mine," etc. Playing guitar is about music. It's not a sport for the love of Moses. If I wanted to hear the most incredible (all-head and ego) guitar work all day long, I'd get satellite radio and listen to Jazz, Classical, and Tech Rock guitar all day. Point is... I like both highly skilled and simple guitarists. It's all about the tunes. So maybe you or someone you know needs to quit being a snooty guitar critic. Do you really feel anything when you hear an insane shred? Hell yeah it's some of the most impressive music ever written. But all I get from it is "I'm the best. Look at me! I'm like the Barry Bonds of guitar!" What about all the crazy timing...

6 ATOMIC Dorian Guitar Speed Exercises
2007-09-24 18:43:00
Behind the scenes I've been working on a special treat for ATOMIC readers. I have nearly 30 guitar speed exercises that are guaranteed to double or even triple your soloing speed in less than a week (for some, in one day). If you're already fast, the lessons won't be quite as profound on your playing, but for those of you who get told you suck all the time, rub your hands together because these legato runs, riffs, combo runs, and power runs are going to give you the edge you've been looking for. (Don't steal my guitar lessons and put them on your website. 1) I'll break your guitar against the wall then set it on fire. 2) You'll go to hell. 3) This is copywritten material.) By the way, don't mind how the tabs run into the sidebar of the website. I don't claim to be an ATOMIC computer nerd. Enjoy! Experimental Music (Guitar Audio)
2007-09-24 02:27:00
Hi ATOMIC fans. Been getting a few e-mails lately asking why I don't post new entries as often as other bloggers do. Truth is I play guitar a whole lot, so I only post around once per week. So what have I been up to? I've put up some mp3s here with experimental music I've been recording lately. I don't consider these actual songs, but rather guitar ideas that are being developed. 1) Experimental Music One This recording doesn't have much structure. It builds up to an outro, getting heavier and heavier sounding. There are 5 or 6 guitars playing at once at some points. This I recorded a few months ago, and I've already forgotten how to play some of it. I believe it's in the key of Dm however. Pretty experimental. Almost hypnotic. 2) Experimental Music Two This experimental track could pass for Pop (maybe). I wanted to see what kind of musical ideas I could come up with in the solos. The tracks were recorded with a one-time run, so some of it is sloppy and out of the ...

2007 November Led Zeppelin Reunion Tour (Tickets $250/£125)
2007-09-14 03:13:00
This may be the last chance you have at seeing one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived perform live-in-person: the awesome Jimmy Page. That's right folks. The 2007 Led Zeppelin Reunion Tour is nigh. We can expect the surviving members Page, Robert Plant (who can no longer hit those high notes that used to drive girls in the audience crazy), and John Paul Jones. Although they're calling it a reunion tour, Zeppelin is only scheduled for one performance on November 26th at the O2 Arena in London. Tickets are running for £125 or $250 USD, and you can get them for this price online here. That's a pretty penny, but that's what the legends are charging these days. Just look at the Rolling Stones. I'd pay that much to see three gods of rock and roll if I lived anywhere near England. Are you going to be there?

Fastest Guitarist Ever Joe Satriani
2007-09-12 22:46:00
Following #1 Charlie Christian #2 Joe Pass #3 Jimmy Page #4 Wes Montgomery And Number 5... on the ATOMIC Greatest Guitarist s of All Time List, the fastest guitarist in the world, the one and only, the stunning, the innovative, the severely skilled: Joe Satriani Uh oh, what did he say? First let me clear up my statement about "Satch" being the fastest guitarist in the world. A lot of shredders out there don't like to give Joe Satriani the credit he deserves because in stead of shredding, he plays one-hand legato style. But... he plays a whole lot of 32nd notes at a blazing speed, which makes him the quickest. It's said the reason he plays legato is because he likes the sound of 32nd notes more than 16th. Joe Satriani is the second rocker on the ATOMIC greatest guitarists list. Why is that? In 1986, Satch became the first purely instrumental rock guitarist to be put in the spotlight. And thus good sir, he has inspired an entire generation of highly-advanced guitarists...

#4... Beloved Jazz Guitarist Wes Montgomery
2007-09-04 08:00:00
Previously #1 Charlie Christian #2 Joe Pass #3 Jimmy Page #4 on the ATOMIC Greatest Guitarist s of All Time List, the beloved... Wes Montgomery Inspired by his Idol Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery took the world by storm in the 50s with innovative guitar techniques and soulful tunes that ultimately led (backfiring) to what we call Smooth Jazz today. Random opinion: Wes Montgomery invented a heartfelt and deep style known as Smooth Jazz, which has been butchered into cheesy, often "elevatory" music. Smooth Jazzers obviously missed the point somewhere in the translation. Don't kill me... Montgomery was well-known for being the first Jazz guitarist to use his thumb instead of a pick. By using his thumb, he was able to express with a variety of tones. Wes Montgomery was also an innovator in that he applied the use of octaves. These rare techniques had such an impact that Montgomery has been one of the most mimicked Jazzers in history. I don't know if there's a direct c...

Greatest Rock Guitarist of All Time Jimmy Page
2007-09-03 02:59:00
Jimmy Page Rock guitarist Jimmy Page of the Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin is the ATOMIC #3 greatest guitarist of all time (#1 was Charlie Christian, #2 Joe Pass). Why is Jimmy Page the first rock guitarist on this master list? One word: influential. Page's technique of down-stroking chords and power chords influenced the earliest punk rock guitarists like Johnny Ramone and thus, all of Punk Rock and any style of Rock like Alternative and New Rock. Also, Jimmy Page is the greatest Rock guitarist of all time because of his Riff Rock, which still is a key element in Heavy Metal music. You might not know this one. Eddie Van Halen is often credited for being the creator of finger-tapping technique. That was actually Jimmy Page. While Rock guitarist Van Halen may have taken finger tapping to an amazing level, he originally learned it from Page. Furthermore, Jimmy Page was a pioneer in guitar recording techniques doing things no one had ever heard like the effects of putting mi...

#2... Jazz Guitar Player Joe Pass
2007-09-02 17:51:00
Yesterday Charlie Christian was inducted into the ATOMIC Greatest Guitar ists of All Time List at the #1 spot. #2 on the list we have another Jazz guitar player, the amazing: Joe Pass Joe Pass hands-down was the most incredibly skilled guitarist who ever lived. Even if you don't enjoy Jazz guitar, you can appreciate his mind-blowing melodic improvising. Not to be a jerk, but for those of you who think Yngwie Malmsteen or Michael Angelo Batio are amazing shredders, Joe Pass makes them look like 10-year-old girls. If Pass were alive today, I can imagine him shredding in a way that would probably make some people's heads explode like in the movie Scanners. If there were ever an alien who dressed in a human costume any time throughout the course of history, it would have been the 2nd greatest guitarist of all time, Joe Pass. Not only was Pass a freak of nature Jazz guitar player, he was one of the most influential guitarists, even influencing some of the most highly accla...

#1 Greatest Guitarist of All Time Charlie Christian
2007-09-01 02:36:00
To kick off the ATOMIC 10 Greatest Guitarist s of All Time Period... Drum roll please. Charlie Christian Who was Charlie Christian and why is he the greatest guitarist of all time? At 23-years-old Charlie Christian became the most innovative guitarists of his time. In the late 1930s guitars were used as backup instruments because they weren't loud enough. No one had thought about playing guitar as if it were a horn. It was never the lead instrument in a group of musicians. Christian was the greatest guitarist of all time because he started using an amplifier to play loud enough to be the soloist of a group. We have Charlie Christian to credit for the evolution of music on the electric guitar. If it weren't for him, we'd all be listening to horns and I for one would have already blown my head off. Can you imagine a guitarist like Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine playing "Killing in the Name Of" on a saxophone instead of a guitar? Charlie Christian's 1940 "Flying...

How to Shred Guitar Solos: You Need Speed
2007-08-19 18:37:00
Eddy Gaz has published a free four-part series on how to shred on guitar at YouTube. Graciously Gaz has allowed viewers to embed the videos on their sites, so what I've done here is put all four videos on ATOMIC and I've taken the time to tab out the lessons and highlight the key points. Thanks Eddy! Out of all the chopbuilding videos and shred videos I've seen (including Joe Stump's Chopbuilder, John Petrucci's Rock Discipline, Michael Angelo Batio's Speed Kills, Frank Gambale's Chopbuilder) Eddy Gaz's free guitar speed videos have been most helpful. Instead of piling tons of exercises on you, Gaz goes into shredding technique that has increased my 16th note chops at least by 20bps in the first day, just by mainly learning the way world class shredders hold the pick/plectrum (in a death lock). Like I said, while you won't learn but a couple exercises, you're going to learn exactly how to build your shred speed for your solos. Eddy Gaz has more free guitar lesson vid...

5 Most Influential Rock Guitarists (You May Not Know)
2007-08-18 16:20:00
We all know the influence of rock guitarists like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. They contributed to the evolution of guitar playing, they inspired, and they brought music to a whole new level. But what other guitarists had a huge impact on today's music that you might not know so well? #1. Stephen Malkmus S.M. is best-known for being the mastermind, lead guitarist, and front man behind the most influential underground rock band of the early 90s, Pavement. Stephen Malkmus' simple but melodic and precise guitar work lives on today in bits through rock guitarists in underground groups everywhere, even in the mainstream. What was revolutionary about S.M.'s playing is that it was incredibly lo-fi, which lead to a more warm sound that we have heard again and again throughout the later part of the 90s and 2000s. Pavement's debut album Slanted and Enchanted (recorded with the most crappy equipement you could imagine, including a 4-track analog) ranks 134 on Rolling Stone M...

Line 6 Pocket Pod has been available since early Summer . It's small enough it can fit in your palm. Some of today's hot guitarists manually programmed in 300+ effects. Crate Profiler 5 is an new amp with a USB port for easy recording. The guitar gear review also explains why the new Crate makes for a great traveling amplifier. Roland RE-20 Space Echo is a new version of the 1973 Roland Space Echo, except for this one Roland teamed up with BOSS to bring you a digital pedal instead of analog. Gear not yet released. New DigiTech Gear includes the yet-to-come RP90 Guitar Effects Processor, and the CF-7 Pedal, XTC Pedal, GSP1101 Guitar Preamp and Processor, Live 2 and Live 4. BOSS ME-20 Multi Effects is a followup to the previous ME versions, 4x more powerful. Bashing the New Smashing Pumpkin Guitarist
2007-08-16 00:18:00
Burn-out Smashing Pump kin s members Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlan held a 13 minute YouTube Q & A interview yesterday. You got to love the great guitar work from their songs throughout the years, but holy Moses you can tell by the interview that the members of the group aren't hungry at all anymore. Worse, they make me (at least) want to fall asleep. The only good thing about the interview was hearing a little bit about Billy Corgan's setup: Custom-built Strat with Dimarzio pickups Diesel Herbert Amp (German) "Weird Effects Pedals" with German names, so he couldn't pronounce them From what I can tell the Smashing Pumpkins new album "Zeitgeist" has some solid guitar work from newcomer Jeff Schroeder. But not that great... Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today, but I feel the urge to severely rip on one of my all-time favorite bands in this highly one-sided post. SP, I love you/I hate you. New Guitar Distortion Pedal: Hartman LM308
2007-08-15 00:44:00
A small company out of Berkeley California (Hartman Electronics) recently announced the release of the LM308 Op-Amp Guitar Distortion Pedal . The pedal features two modes by tapping the stomp switch, one that gives you a vintage distortion sound and the other a contemporary overdrive. The new pedal offers a solid medium if you ask me. "Together, the two modes of operation expand the pedal's sonic palette and versatility, allowing it to be applied to a wide array of setups, playing styles and musical contexts, old and new." -Hartman The first mode of sound is based on the popular 70s Punk groups like the Ramones and Sex Pistols, 70s and 80s College Rock bands, and old school New Wavers (effects similar to the Pro Co Rat). Simply put by Hartman Electronics, the second mode was crafted to be "suitable for bombarding the input of downstream amps/devices." I'm pretty excited about the LM308. The Rat was the first pedal I ever used and I fell in love with it right away. These days ...

Guitar Tab You Can Hear? the New PROGRESSION Software

Next month NotionMusic is releasing a new program that allows you to easilly create and publish guitar tab. And it's called PROGRESSION. The software will include already published tabs from B-level guitarists like Neil Zaza, the cheesy (however awesome) neo-classical guitarist. Random Nerd Alert: You call them tabs, I call them guitar tab because derived from "tablature." Before you click on the link to go buy this software in September for $149.99, you should probably know if you already don't about the free guitar tab creator that's been around on the net for a decade or more called Power Tab. While you're not getting "the same thing," it's actually better. There are literally thousands of already created power tab files of your favorite songs all over the net (see AllPowerTabs). Download the power tab files and you can play along in MIDI. Don't waste your money on this.

The Death of Guitar Tab, So Long

A Gifted and Talented Child Already a Rock Star: Guitarist Alex "Raz"
2007-08-11 16:24:00
Alex "Raz" is a gifted and talented child already a rock star at 9-years-old. In March Raz was discovered playing on the reality show "Finding Julian's Band". Since then he's picked up fans all over the internet at sites like YouTube and Yahoo! VIDEO. Father Steve Raz has been the brains behind the promotion of his rock star child. "I could just tell. I just showed him a little finger exercise, and I could just tell, he picked it up pretty quick" -Alex's Father Alex's first album debuts in October featuring his old buddy from the reality show, 7-year-old singer Vincent Fondale. Alex Raz's influences include guitarists Eddie Van Halen, SRV, Satriani, Slash, and more, so we can expect it to sound like a hybrid of exciting guitar rock. Okay, this gifted child may not seem amazing to few, but let me say this. When I used to teach private guitar lessons, the 9-year-olds I taught could barely press down a string. They had an attention span of a fly. The best and most talented ...
