Ulrich Schnauss - A Strangely Isolated Place (2003)
2008-01-15 22:01:00
Ulrich Schnauss was born in the northern German town of Kiel in 1977. During his formative years, he came to love a wide spectrum of music, ranging from My Bloody Valentine to Tangerine Dream, from Chapterhouse to early bleep and breakbeat tracks. There was not much opportunity to see his musical heroes in Kiel, so he moved to Berlin in 1996.By that time, Ulrich was already a prolific musician in such genres as ambient and drum and bass, with a variety of pseudonyms (most notably View to the Future and Ethereal 77). These earlier works soon caught the eye of Berlin electronica label CCO (City Centre Offices), who took him up.Soon his submissions to CCO developed into Ulrich?s first album under his own name, entitled Far Away Trains Passing By. It became an electronic classic; listeners were smitten with the lush instrumentation and the emotional impact of his elegant music.Yet nothing could prepare his growing army of supporters for the next record, A Strangely Isolated Place , which...

Zoo Brazil - Video Rockets
2008-01-15 21:48:00
John Andersson and Johan Emmoth are the creative force behind Zoo Brazil . Also recording as Laid, Cuba Computers, Nars and Outcold, they have steadily carved out a reputation as a highly innovative and respected production and dj team. The pair are prolific producers and DJs, having worked with some of the world's best known artists - for example Human League. With their remix work contributing to the catalogues of a host of admired underground dance acts, like Blaze (Slip N Slide) and Zoot Woman (Wall of Sound). They have remixed for labels such as Music For Freaks, Paper Recordings and 20:20 Vision to name but a few. On their first release on GPM, Zoo Brazil show their ability to deliver infectious electronic grooves. All three tracks are aimed squarely at the dancefloor, with stripped back 4/4 beats driving through acid squelches, raw synth stabs and minimal percussion. The lead track, 'Walk Right Back' is already creating a stir on floors in London and Berlin, with more set to...

Quincy Jones - Big Band Bossa Nova
2008-01-15 21:28:00
Even when he was a full-time jazz cat, Quincy Jones always had an ear for the pop aesthetic. This 1962 record does contain a good bit of, how you say, queijo in its unsubtle arrangements, but it is for the most part an accessible, entertaining, and bubbly affair. And with musicians of the caliber of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Paul Gonsalves, Clark Terry, Jim Hall (who can't help but be tasteful), and Phil Woods all contributing ideas, a baseline quality is assured. Most significantly, Jones goes beyond the expected Jobim and Bonfa cuts to fit Lerner & Loewe and even Mingus into bossa nova's bright clothes. It's so reminiscent of the cocktail party music for those old movies from the late 50's and 60's.Bossa Nova was king then, and this is a fabulous feel good nostalgia recording. This CD makes me want to throw a cocktail party! This treatment of bossa nova fits in perfectly with the musical culture of those days gone by. It's a time travel trip to the suburban set and penthouse ...

Echospace - The Coldest Season [Modern Love]
2008-01-13 14:33:00
After years of limited-edition maxi-singles, "The Coldest Season " collects a series of previous vinyl-only cuts that Rob "Deepchord" Modell has been putting out and is the first high-profile release for label Echospace. Coming from Detroit, the city where techno was born, Deepchord music is actually much closer to what we've been hearing for more than a decade from Berlin label Basic Channel, in a sub-genre generally known as dub-techno. That is to say, here we mostly have minimal digressions based on a profound bass, dub effects, deep chords, muted echoes and a general narcotic ambience. Add an obsessive attention to details and an involving progression with strong hypnotic results and "The Coldest Season" stands for one of the best dub-techno excursions in quite some time. And finally, the main touch: recorded using only vintage-analog equipment, there's a strong and unique identity coming from the fact that its synths seem made of ice and wind. Just perfect for this coldest sea...

VA - Brazilica! Compiled by Gilles Peterson
2008-01-12 23:40:00
One of the greatest compilations of Brazilian music you could ever hope to buy -- a brilliant selection of classic tunes, put together by DJs Gilles Peterson & Joe Davis as an introduction to the rich sounds of Brazil! The scope is amazing -- a real blend of numbers that represent the best that Brazil has to offer, and which goes past the usual bossa-heavy type of compilation you'd find in the US. Here, the grooves know no boundaries -- and run from jazzy, to baroque, to funky, breezy, folksy, and beyond. Many of the tracks on the set have still not been reissued in any other form, and even though the compilation's nearly a decade old, it's still one of the first we'd recommend to anyone wanting a great set of Brazilian music!01 Sergio Mendes & Brasil 77 - After Sunrise 02 Tamba Trio - Barumba 03 Dom Um - Birimbau 04 Milton Nascimento - Vera Cruz 05 Gilberto Gil - Roda 06 Meirelles E Os Copa 5 - Solo 07 Marcos Valle - Crickets Sing Anamaria 08 Baden Powell - Blues A Vole...

Philip Glass - Solo Piano
2008-01-10 21:38:00
American composer Philip Glass returns to the Sony Classical label this Fall with the release of the original soundtrack recording of Naqoyqatsi, completing a trilogy of visionary films ? beginning with Koyaanisqatsi (1983) and Powaqqatsi (1988) ? on which the composer has collaborated with the American filmmaker Godfrey Reggio. The Naqoyqatsi soundtrack also represents the Glass?s first collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who is soloist throughout the score. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 31, 1937, Philip Glass discovered music in his father?s radio repair shop that carried a line of records in addition to servicing radios. To figure out why recordings of great chamber works sold poorly, Ben Glass would take them home to play for his three children. Philip rapidly became familiar with Beethoven quartets, Schubert sonatas, Shostakovich symphonies and other music then considered ?offbeat.? It was not until he was in his upper teens that Glass encountered more ?standard? clas...

Salmonella Dub - Outside The Dubplates
2008-01-10 21:07:00
Recorded in the Salmonella Dub's Kaikoura studio and co-produced by Paddy Free (Pitch Black), the album is a Remix album true to their singular style with mainstay dub rhythms combining with satisfying outings into funky jazzy drum and bass styles. Having been on the scene since 1993, Salmonella Dub have a lot of experience to draw upon and their maturity is apparent, as is a sound which they have successfully developed into something uniquely their own. This is a remix album in the true sense of the term each of Inside The Dubplates ten songs have had the remix treatment, reworked into deeper dub versions and hard-hitting drum and bass tunes designed for the dancefloor.Old friends like Adrian Sherwood and Mad Professor weave their heavily reverberated magic, new school dubsters Groove Corporation add some tasty toasting to their mix of 'Platetectonics', DJ Digital and Spirit transform 'The Bromley East Roller' into a massive breakbeat monster and local boy DLT holds his own aga...

With the outstanding success of the two first "?mixing" compilations from Jazzanova and me, it would be a hard task finding the next artist that could bring something special for the third in the series, and keep raising the bar - enter Dennis McFarlane (aka Dego) of 4hero. With his partner Mark Clair (aka Marc Mac), 4hero have changed the face of music and made a huge contribution to dance culture. They were regarded as pioneers of jungle and drum'n?bass after their first album "In Rough Territory", and haven?t stopped innovating since. In more than 20 years they have released 6 albums and set up 5 different labels: Reinforced, Raw Canvas, 2000 Black, Omniverse and Twisted Funk. Their album "Parallel Universe" was named NME Album of the Year, and "2 Pages" (released on Gilles Peterson?s Talkin? Loud label) was nominated for a Mercury Prize Award, and won them a MOBO Award in 2001. They recently released "Play With The Changes" on their own Raw Canvas label, which received a crit...

Salmonella Dub - Calming Of The Drunken Monkey
2008-01-08 22:47:00
Salmonella Dub began in the summer of 1992/1993 when Andrew, Dave and Mark applied reggae rhythms and bowel stirring basstones to a handful of bad taste covers. Salmonella Dub's first show was a mixture of covers from Fred Dagg to Nancy and Lee plus some original material in the Westport Racetrack tearooms with EST on January 13th 1993. Over the course of 1993 the band with the aid of Ice Mac and his soundsystem worked the Dux de Lux and Steel Magnolia bars with percussionists Marcus Puentener and Craig Allen. Later in the year they hooked up Pete Wood on keys and trumpet and Conan Wilcox on sax and percussion. This line up remained constant for their first 3 independent recordings and releases. The band toured NZ regularly and teamed up to do shows with Mad Professor, African Headcharge, Alex Patterson and Infectious Grooves amongst others. Around the time of the THC Winter release Pete Wood left the band to move to Auckland and their current sound engineer David Wernham left to w...

John Scofield (with Medeski Martin Wood) - A Go Go
2008-01-06 16:16:00
John Scofield (electric & acoustic guitars, whistle); John Medeski (organ, Wurlitzer, clavinet, piano); Chris Wood (acoustic & electric basses); Billy Martin (drums, tambourine).
