- Boston Herald interviewed Karl Hyde of Underworld. The paper asks Hyde why he hasn't brought their legendary live show to the United States in more than five years. "It's very expensive to come to America. It?s the only place we lose money. And we haven?t lost money in 20 years,? explains Hyde. - Resident Advisor caught up with Sander Kleinenberg. "Around four or five years ago, I saw my dancefloors being dominated by guys. That's why I steered away from so-called progressive house," he says. - This is hilarious: "Grab your glowsticks, and get in the eye of the neon storm! I just... Can't get Blue Monday out of my head
2007-09-13 11:55:00
Many of you know that "Blue Monday " by New Order is, by all accounts, the biggest selling 12" single of all time. Since its release it sold more than 3 million pressings wordwide. Initially released in 1983 on Manchester-based Factory Records (R.I.P. Tony Wilson), "Blue Monday " is often seen as one of the most important crossover tracks of the 80s. You know the rest.So what you do when you happen to be absolutely obsessed with such a legendary and influential piece of wax? Well, just like this dude named Spencer Graham, you start an owner's club. Graham in his own words: "What is it about this record that so fascinates me? Is it its ubiquity? Is it its timelessness? Is it its sampleablity? ... There are countless other reasons why I'm so into this record, not least the fact that it is a perfect, complete package of sound and design. I've yet to see a better record sleeve, thanks Peter Saville and Brett Wickens! This is where 12" vinyl comes into its own, I still buy it in pre...

"I feel, especially more so now than years ago, that there aren't enough people who really concentrate on introducing new things in dance music industry. I mean, from what I can see from my colleagues, other DJs and artists, there aren't enough [people] testing new things; kind of putting aside the fear that the audience may not like you, or may not like it. There seems to be a shortage of that in dance music..."- Detroit techno legend Jeff Mills talks music industry in his first radio interview in more than a decade. Interview: Rubens
2007-09-10 12:45:00
Rubens revel in emotional, electronic music. Their sound lies somewhere between the organic electronic cut ups of Keiran Hebden (a.k.a. Four Tet, Fridge), the pastoral melodies of early Boards Of Canada and the acoustic guitar based experiments of Caribou. Their debut single, the double A side Puggies/Vertical Hold (2007), has been compared to the likes of Stereolab, Tangerine Dream, New Order and more. Filter27 caught up with Mark Flanagan and Gordon MacDermid (a.k.a. Rubens) prior to the release of their debut album Carnivalesque (out October 8th). What were the motivations for getting together and forming Rubens? G: It just kind of happened really. We moved into a flat together in the summer of 2004. At that time we were both discovering the wonders of Ableton Live. One of us may have been working on a project and passed it to the other to see what they could do with it. We ended up with a track that sounded pretty fresh and have been working together ever since. M: I'd been...

Swayzak - Some Other Country
2007-08-29 14:10:00
The British dub-tech innovators Swayzak (a.k.a. James Taylor and David Brown) have released their fifth studio proper, Some Other Coutry, on !K7. If you are familiar with their discography you'll notice immediately that sound has been again stripped down and takes a gigantic leap from their previous, more dance-oriented effort, Loops From the Bergerie (2004). Some Other Coutry is filled with darkness and minimalism and emphasizes more on the listening aspect. However, the duo still manages to find a near-perfect balance between instrumental sounds, dreamy lyrics and those moody textures they're known for. Guests on the album inluded their favorite singer, Richard Davis, Italian pop band Les Fauves and, quite surprisingly, Berlin producer and DJ Cassy who lends her voice to "Quiet Life" and "Smile and Receive".The result is an album that sounds dark, moody and mysterious; quite anything you've heard from them before. Grab it. Excellent stuff. Format: CD Label: !K7 Release date...

College radio DJ breaks Guinness World Record: spins for 175 hours
2007-08-28 11:55:00
North Carolina college radio host Johnny Walker has unofficially broken the former Guinness World Record for longest continuous radio broadcast by an individual on the air with a set that ran for 175.25 hours. Walker, 39, launched his quest on WUAG FM (the student-run station of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) with the track "Crush" by Paul van Dyk on Monday, August 6 at 6 am. He switched off his microphone on August 13 at 1:15 pm. The local paper Go Triad ran a daily diary of the entire broadcast, including the facts that raw garlic and pumpkin seeds helped Walker fight the urge to sleep.Under the strict Guinness rules, to count as a continuous broadcast, a talent can only take one five-minute break per hour (which can be stockpiled and used for a longer break), no song played can be longer than six minutes and during interviews, the broadcaster must speak at least once per minute. The entire process must be recorded and videotaped. The previous record of 125 hou...

Filter27 Podcast 005 - Peer Benary
2007-08-28 09:45:00
The fifth installment of our podcast comes courtesy of Berlin-based DJ Peer Benary. Benary is currently resident at Bar23 and ZMF (together with Filter27 contributor Florian Wizorek) in Berlin. Recently he began to spin at MFE (also in Berlin), where he's showcasing more goa-esque sounds than his usual techno-influenced progressive sound. His debut production effort, "Eazy Dub," is doing promo rounds now. As for this podcast mix, "it is a presentation of my genre-polar opposites: a warm, ethereal beginning contrasting with a deep, dark almost monotone conclusion," he says. "The inspiration for this mix came as a direct result of traveling through the various soundscapes in my repertoire, however, this mix is somehow more technoid than those I normally deliver."There is a number of his own re-edits that preserve the flow. Also a track from 2001 finds its way in, proving that the newest is not always the best. Tracklist: 01. Alexander Roland - Auftrieb * // Karmarouge 02. Eyerer...

Ian Brown , ex singer of the landmark British rock group Stone Roses, has collaborated with Sinead O'Connor on his new single, "Illegal Attacks ," which launched as a Stop the War exclusive."Illegal Attacks" explores the Iraqi and Afganistan wars and sends a powerful message how corrupted and hypocritical the world is right now. The accompanying video, directed by Colin O'Toole, was shot in London and tells the sad story of a young British man who enlists in the army and is sent to war. But the actual lyrics are even more, well, controversial: "So what the fuck is this UK, Going in with the US of A in Iraq and Iran and Afghanistan. There's hardly a day goes by, How many sons have to die? ... These are illegal attacks. It?s contracts for contacts. So bring the soldiers back..."
