Pitchfork is reporting that Swedish producer Axel Willner (a.k.a. Oops! Willner has been forced to cancel all US dates, including his gig at Coachella festival on Sunday. Come on Barack, you can (and hopefully will) fix this immigration shit! Update
2008-03-01 09:54:00
Hi everybody! I am taking a break from updating the blog. I'll be moving to my new apartment this week, and on top of that starting a new job at the end of March. I won't be listening to any music in the next couple of weeks, my computers will be shut down, iPod erased, and won't be responding to e-mails unless it's an emergency. Regular posting will resume mid-March. In the meantime feel free to check out other great blogs and news sites listed in our links section. See you soon!

When I'm DJing I like to compose. I'm always bringing vocals or acapellas into my sets. Vinyl is like an analogue instrument and you must do something with that instrument. It's meant as material for young DJs to do something with. DJs should do things like record keys at home and then mix things together. I think that makes things more exciting, when people at a club night suddenly hear an acapella from a seventies hit. You are bringing two worlds together. This allows you to advance electronic music. I'm not sure about such statements after listening to his recent Essential Mix. Whatever. Luciano : Force of nature [Resident Advisor]

Robert Hood mixes Fabric 39
2008-02-04 09:25:00
Legendary Detroit techno DJ and producer Robert Hood has mixed the latest installment in acclaimed Fabric compilation series. Out in March, Fabric 39 contains a whopping 32 tracks, including exclusive edits and additional samples, featuring cuts from the likes of Monobox, Joris Voorn, Pacou, Marco Lenzi, Jeff Mills and many others. Hood explains: This mix has to be about the club. I'd like it to be dancefloor orientated and to take the listener on a trip. Any project I do, I like to read like a book. I like it to tell a story, you know? Not to just be random songs or tracks. I t has to have continuity to take you on a ride. It should have a concept and be able to translate and read as such. The DJ mix will be enhanced with live elements added to the mix. The live elements are just tracks or patterns, rhythm patterns that will be exclusive to the CD. I spent more than 99 cents on records before I was eleven years old so it's lame of people to say they like music and then, in the same breath, say that it has no value. That means you don't like music; you like getting stuff free. If you had to pay for it you wouldn't make the sacrifice. You like it enough to get it on the download but you don't like it enough to pay for it. You're in a different category from me because I feel it does have a value. And the person and label and individuals involved that put some effort into it, they want and need to try to make something back to continue on. ? U2's manager: It is time for ISPs to be real partners
2008-01-30 08:43:00
U2's manager Paul McGuinness addressed the music industry with a rather pathetic speech at MIDEM's first International Manager Summit this week. McGuinness believes ISPs (Internet service providers) are largerly responsible for the decline in music sales and should start filtering p2p traffic and take responsibility for the content their customers are downloading and files they share. Oh boy. Here we go again! Today, there's a bigger issue and it's about the whole relationship between the music and the technology business. Network operators, in particular, have for too long had a free ride on music ? on our clients' content. It's time for a new approach ? time for ISPs to start taking responsibility for the content they've profited from for years. It's amazing to see and read about those ultra-rich music moguls who think they are too poor, hurt and don't get their fair share. Give me a break! I've said many times before that the problem itself isn't that people do not ...

I'm still not getting the buzz and hype around Kabale Und Liebe & Daniel Sanchez's last year's minimal anthem "Mumbling Yeah ". But people seem to like it, so do fellow bloggers, DJs and music press. Fair enough. Anyway, I checked the Top 50 tracks for December 2007 over at Resident Advisor today and, rather surprisingly, "Mumbling Yeah" ranked at No. 21: But then as I scroll down I noticed there's a surprise at No. 40: Mumbling, hell yeah.

As many of you have already noticed, starting today, January 24th, all the MP3's available for download on Filter27 that are hosted on Divshare file sharing service are not available (or won't be shortly). Yup, they've got our balls in a juice maker... The files won't be available for the rest of this month, so please bare with us. We'll try to come up with some alternative solution as soon as possible, including uploads to other services and possibly subscribing to DivShare's extended monthly plan. Peace out. 'True techno', as most people use it, is only a phrase like many others. Actually, 'true' really means honesty, love and the desire to express something. It's like people invented that phrase as they know what came before but they are incapable of changing anything. There is still a lot of 'true' music out there and the 'golden age' doesn't need to be recalled, it's still here ? just looking different than before. ? Beatport imposing sales requirements for labels: Less crap in the future?
2008-01-21 10:25:00
I stumbled upon this interesting discussion recently over at GU forums. Jay Epoch (label manager for Proton Music) has kicked off an interesting thread worth checking out. Jay writes: I've watched sales dwindle each month as Beatport adds more and more labels releasing more and more music. During the month of December, Beatport set a last minute deadline for labels to get releases to them if they wanted to get music out by the end of the year. As a result, there were far fewer releases on Beatport in December. We managed to get our releases turned in on time, but many labels didn't. Sales for these releases we got turned in were about 2-3x that of the normal releases. This got all of the releases into genre top 100 charts. Anyway, here's the money line: Anyway, I'm sharing this because I just got this notification from Beatport: "Any label that cannot produce $300.00 in GROSS sales each quarter will be put on a probationary status. If the label is unable to hit the $600.00 m...

London's Turnmills to close
2008-01-21 09:50:00
Reports surfaced that Turnmills ? one of London's best-known and longest running nightclubs ? is about to close to make room for real estate development. A spokesman for Turnmills tells Evening Standard: As far as we are concerned our lease is still intact until any legal documents have been signed, which they haven't at this stage and the permission to develop does not mean they need vacant possession for the first phase of the building works. The long-term plan for the building and development far exceeds our existing lease. We are in negotiation with the landlords to buy us out of the remaining lease if they want to bring the development of the basement forward - which they may or may not want to do. It's very early days. They've already dropped their name. Sad news for British clubbers indeed. Turnmills to become an office block [standard.co.uk]

...there is a lot of interest in digital formats and of course as a label, you feel that there is a lot of change happening. Vinyl seems to get less important ? sadly. For my label it is still quite OK to do vinyl, but I know many other small labels that are no longer able to do vinyl. It is getting too expensive to press records because you have to sell more than 800 copies to pay the pressing. It seems to be important to stay flexible. I don't know what the future brings, but too much music is getting copied: that's a problem for small and big labels. But I believe that people need music for their lives, so there is a need for new music that is going to stay and that's the most important thing. ? Ron Murphy ? record cutter, mastering engineer and record producer at Sound Enterprises (formerly National Sound Corporation) in Detroit , MI ? has passed away of a heart attack. Here is what was said about him on Discogs.com: "Ron Murphy is probably one of the most instrumental figures in the history Detroit electronic music. All you have to do is take a good look in your record collection and look for the little NSC logo on the runout groove on the inside of the record. Ron has shaped the sound of Detroit Techno more than just about anybody. There were allot of records back in the beginning that were brought in by people that knew next to nothing about production or mixing down properly and Ron has saved the sound of those records and many of them have went down in history as some of the finest examples of techno ever made. Ron has been one of the biggest opponents of overcompression in the industry as people have rushed to bring techno music into the rediculous loudness war that...
