Luca Turilli - Ancient Forest Of Elves

Luca Turilli plays symphonic and power metal and is known from Rhapsody. I haven't listened Rhapsody since few years, but just a while ago I discovered Luca's solo stuff. It's nothing new, but it reminded me how I enjoy that fresh and optimistic tune. After listening months only black, doom and death metal, it feels good to change to something very different. I play classical instruments and I enjoy the way how Luca mixes classical music elements with metal.Well, these Rhapsody and Luca Turilli videos suck! Big time. Oh man.. horses and swords.. but the worst is that the guys play guitars in some fucking bushes. Yeah, forget the videos and lyrics, just listen to the melodies.

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Let's play a classic that I enjoy a lot. Black Sabbath (yeah, everyone knows about it, no need to tell much) is said to be the "starting point" of metal music. They were the first ones playing music that is nowadays considered as metal. Some people claim that "all guitar riffs are already invented by Black Sabbath " and that the riffs today are all based on the riffs invented by Black Sabbath. Who knows, not me. Anyhow, here's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

The diversity of music genres is one fantastic thing in this world. I enjoy many kind of music from classical to rock and from folk to metal. There are so many weirdos in music, like Marilyn Manson and Lordi . You don't know if you should take it seriously or not. Anyhow, here's one more funny band playing fantastic music. They are well known in Finland, but not much abroad. Leningrad Cowboys . The names tell you already that these guys must provide a great experience. They are good. I like a lot. Here we go, Leningrad!

Twilight Guardians - La Isla Bonita

Remember Madonna's La Isla Bonita some 15 years ago? Yeah, I do remember, don't laugh. I have to say that I had a short non-metal period in my youth, I'm ashamed. Anyhow, here comes a much better version of that "classic". Twilight Guardians is a Finnish power metal band. Not much known yet, but may be in the future. I listen to power metal quite a lot, and with this band I really like the clear vocals and vibrato. Great!

Verenpisara - Aamuisin Kun Sataa

Verenpisara is a interesting band from Finland. It's pretty much unknown but unique. I enjoy their melodic guitar and "velvet" vocals. This is a great club band, but it seems like they are not that active anymore. That's a pitty.

Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirit

I'm a fan of Nirvana , been since the glorious days of the band. I remember how different Nirvana was as I heard it first time. Nirvana really kicked my ass and it is a pitty that Kurt's life ended as it did. He was a fabulous artist and a modest man. Sure he was addicted which caused lots of troubles, but I gotta say he was my idol on those days. Just because he was so grunge.Then there is another great artist I like, Tori Amos . Well, she's definately grazy, but she is a fabulous artist as well. How is she related to Nirvana now? The video below is a great tribute to Kurt. She definately sounds so fabulous. Man, I know this has nothing to do with metal, but take a look at the title of this blog. I extended to cover rock music as well, just to have a bit wider scope. I'm not gonna extend to classical or folk music, for sure. Finntroll is a Finnish folk metal band, but they sing in Swedish. The name of the band simply means "Troll From Finland". Finntroll is a pretty interesting band, even though the video below is a bit funny.

We have a plenty of good metal bands here in Finland, but some of them are not much known abroad. Here's one band I enjoy a lot, Twilight ning. This is their "At The Forge " live footage from Osaka. Heikki Pöyhiä sings like Michael Kiske! Okay, not exactly, but I do like his voice very much. Find their album Delirium Veil, it's just great.

Metal Video: Verjnuarmu - Laalavat Jouset

Well, here's a strage crew, called Verjnuarmu. They play melodic death metal, but the way they dress and the dialect they use are just so much different from the mainstream of metal music. They come from the Finnish countryside and speak with a strong dialect. I consider them pretty funny group and I don't listen to them (just too boring), but this piece has so nice piano notes in the beginning that I needed to post it. Here we go, Verjnuarmu!

I enjoy going back in time and listen to a bit older metal. Sentence d was a great, great, so damn good Finnish band. It was buried some time ago and that was pitty. Metal Video: Amorphis - Silent Waters

Amorphis is my long time favourite band. I discovered their music somewhere 98-99 when they released "Elegy" album. I was sold totally. I listened the album day after days, week after weeks. It was just so fabuolous. Pieces like "Better Unborn" and "Against The Widows" were just so stunning, fantastic. Since those days Amorphis has changed a lot. They have became from black and doom metal to death and progressive metal that attracts more fans. Vocalist Pasi Koskinen, who has quite unique voice, left the band more than a year ago. Tomi Joutsen, who took over Pasi's "job", is a bit better on stage and has somehow better skills in singing. Voice is not unique as Pasi's but he fits in the band very well.Amorphis has now released a new album "Silent Waters". Once again, Mr. Holopainen and Koivusaari provide fabulous guitar sounds and riffs. Man, this is sooooo gooooood! Here we go! Silent Waters!

Now let's continue with the Finnish metal scene. Maj Karma is one of my favourites. Interesting band with very interesting lyrics. Nowadays the band is not as individual as it used to be few years ago. They used to wear so weird clothes and they truely wanted to be very different from the metal scene. It IS like that in Finnish countryside. The band is Kotiteollisuus, Finnish metal band. Not really on the list of my favourites, but the video is so good that I needed to post it.

My brother moved to Sweden almost 20 years ago and he is now totally "swedenized", hardly speaks Finnish anymore :) I said, there are not even good metal bands in Sweden. It's known from their disco music. Man, I was so wrong, so wrong. Certainly a number of great bands come from Finland, but Sweden has Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Entombed and now Mustasch . "What's this!?", I thought when heard it first time in radio. It sounds different and new, it's just great. I truly enjoy the voice of Ralf Gyllenhammar and his agressive style. Fabulous band!

Metal Video: Children Of Bodom - Children Of Bodom

Children of Bodom became known in the late 90's. I feel their Hatebreeder album is their best one, and one of the best piece on that album is "Children of Bodom". When I heard this one first time, I remember thinking "man, this is fast, raw, cruel, power, death, melodic.. I need to hear this more!". After that C.O.B has been on my list of favourite metal bands. Here's my favourite piece from the Hatebreeder album, live at Seoul, Korea 2001.

My last post talked about Stone, 80's Finnish trash metal band. When talking about Stone, we can nicely link it to Children of Bodom, today's Finnish trash metal band. Roope Latvala of C.O.B used to play in Stone and Alexi Laiho has got influnces from Stone. C.O.B is one of the best known Finnish metal bands in the world and Alexi and Roope have many times been considered the best guitar players in Finland. Check out this video, "In Your Face ". Let's go back in time, back to year 1988. Remember how was your life back on those days? How was the music on those days? Metal music in Finland was quite marginal, but I remember that I used to listen to Metallica, Iron Maiden, Dio, Accept, Ratt, etc. on those days. Finnish metal music was not much known abroad, but Stone was definately the number one trash metal band in homeland. Let us be nostalgic and play "No Commands " from Stone.

Metal Video: Amon Amarth - Runes To My Memory

Swedish band Amon Amarth plays damn good metal based on Viking mythology. I've had heard the name of the band many times but I've never had listened them. Just few weeks ago I discovered this song and man I got kicked! This is truly headbangers music. Fabulous guitars combined with one of the best growls I've ever heard.
