Song #99: "Walking in Memphis" by Marc Cohn
2007-12-30 19:14:00
Continuing with the countdown, Marc Cohn's Grammy nominated hit comes in at #99 with "Walking in Memphis ". Anchored my Cohn's strong vocals, "Walking in Memphis" hit #13 on the Hot 100 Chart in 1991. Whatever your musical tastes, it is hard to deny the polished sound of this song. Sure, you might not of heard of Marc Cohn , but it is very likely you have heard the song, in one form or another. Cher covered the song back in 1995, and country music band, Lonestar released their version in 2003.A certified platinum artist, Cohn hasn't had much success outside of this one hit. It the first single he released and by far his most popular. He went on to release three more albums, the latest coming in 2007 with "Join the Parade" under the new label Decca. This coming just 2 years after his traumatic carjacking experience. Driving back to his hotel after a concert, a man attempted to carjack his van. When the driver tried to drive around the gunman, he fired, striking Cohn above his right...

Song #100: "Take My Picture" by Filter
2007-12-30 05:36:00
We start the countdown with a song that just sneaked in not only in to the rankings but into the decade as "Title of Record" was released on August 24, 1999. "Take My Picture ", off the "Title of Record" album, is by far Filter 's biggest hit, topping the Hot 100 charts at #12 and #3 on the Modern Rock charts. Filter was made famous back in 1995 with their minor hit, "Hey Man, Nice Shot". "Take My Picture" is a song that was a minor hit in the spectrum of the whole decade but I feel that encapsules that classic 90s sound. Born at the end of the decade, it was a product of post-grunge perfection. Not only does it have a classic sound, but the music video is even more classic. Filter made sure to include everything that would make this video a typical 90s music video: a burning wrecked airplane, shots of the band underwater, a mermaid, rooftop bongo drumming, and of course, a room filling up with water. All kidding aside, it was a rather original video and definitely not boring. It's ...

RizzoMusic's Top 100 Songs of the 1990s
2007-12-29 04:40:00
After watching VH1's Greatest Songs of the 90s, I was inspired to start up a series of posts with my picks for the 100 top songs of the 1990s. I am going to skip out of the rap songs since I am not that big of an expert on that side of the 90s. I am tempted to include some pop from the 90s but we will see if any of it actually makes the list. I am going to set out a few ground rules for the list and link back to this post for every entry.Rules (subject to change):1) An artist can only have up to a maximum of three songs on the list.2) No rap, Hip-Hop, or R&B will be included on this list.3) Only singles will be considered for this list.4) I will accept suggestions but this list is in no way comprised of voted songs. It is strictly the opinion of RizzoMusic .5) And obviously the song must have been released between Jan 1st 1990 and Dec 31st 1999.Each song will get it's own post with a little history of the song (chart positions, band trivia, song trivia ect.) and the music video...

Seasons Greetings from Coldplay
2007-12-23 05:09:00
Today I was doing my Christmas shopping and I heard Coldplay on the radio a couple times. Not that unusual considering they are one of the most popular bands right now, but I found it a little strange that I heard "Yellow" both times. It is hard to believe that Coldplay released that song over seven years ago. Fairly popular at the time, it wasn't until "Clocks" and "The Scientist" were released in 2002 that Coldplay would reach widespread mainstream success in the US.Now almost finished with their fourth studio album, Coldplay is gearing up for another successful release and tour. There is no release date set for the album yet but it is rumored to be set in the next few months. In the meantime, they did their own acoustic version of "Last Christmas" which can be viewed on their website, www.coldplay.com. Unfortunately it is not on youtube yet or I would embed it into the article. You will just have to take my word for it and head over there now. They seem to be enjoying themselves...

Featured Song: "Where Is My Mind?" by Pixies
2007-12-22 03:14:00
I finally got a laptop today so I will no doubt be posting a lot more frequently then usual, assuming that I have something to talk about. I was watching Fight Club the other day for the first time and this was one of those songs that is impossible to ignore. After realizing that I just watched a better than average movie, I went straight to Google to try to figure out what was the song that was playing at the end of the movie as the buildings fell. Without much effort I found out that it was called "Where Is My Mind ?".This is a song off of the album Surfer Rosa by a band called Pixies . Released just a little before my time in March of 1988, the album has reached critical acclaim throughout the world. Kurt Cobain has cited Surfer Rosa as the basis for Nevermind's songwriting. When the intensely popular movie, Fight Club, was released in 1999, it sparked a resurgence in interest in Pixies' music. Apparently I was not alone in finding this song to be a perfect fit for the ending of ...

Featured Song: Grazed Knees by Snow Patrol
2007-12-02 16:17:00
Well, I'm back and hopefully back for good but we'll see. This is a big time commitment and I am not sure if I will be able to keep it up. Maybe if I keep the posts shorter and I get a laptop I will be able to keep up consistent postings. A little over one year later and we have had around 55,000 hits. Not too bad. Something I would never imagined why I first started. Anyway, on to the song. This one is by a Scottish band you might of heard of: Snow Patrol . They hit it big in the US with their hit "Chasing Cars" reaching #5 on the US billboard chart. You could not listen to the radio at that time without hearing this power ballad. "Chasing Cars" came off their fourth album and it was a long time coming for them.I have been a fan for about two years but I didn't get around to listening this brilliant song, "Grazed Knees" till a few days ago. It's off their "Final Straw" album but was never a single. I have always loved, "Chocolate", "How to be Dead", "Hands Open", "Open your Eyes...

The Wallflowers New Tour Dates!
2007-09-24 01:30:00
After a brief stint with his solo career, Jakob Dylan seems to have rejoined his fellow band mates, at least for a while. The Wallflowers website, www.wallflowers.com, seems to be revamped back to feature the band as a whole and not just Jakob. There is not much content on it right now but it looks like they are working on it. According to Jacok Dylan's myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/jakobdylan, these dates are the first live performances for the group in over two years. This is great news for any fan of The Wallflowers as it means that they are starting to get back together and seem to be getting things moving. Hopefully they are not just out to play a few shows but are back working on a new album. Anyway, here are the dates. I hope that they are stopping by somewhere close to you.Date - Time - Venue - CityOct 7 2007 - 7:15P - BayFest - Mobile, AlabamaOct 18 2007 - 10:00P - 9:30 Club ...

Collective Soul - "Afterwords" Album Review
2007-08-30 16:13:00
Collective Soul 's new album "Afterwords" was released on August 28th on Itunes and at Target. Unfortunately for me, my digital music store of choice, Rhapsody, does not have the new album. So I just decided to listen to the new album in it's entirety at CollectiveSoul.com where if you click on the boombox on the table in the group picture you can control each track. I was thinking of buying the album at Target but listing on Target.com says that the album is 31.98 and will be released September 5th. You would think that if a great band like Collective Soul provided you with an exclusive opportunity to sell their new album that they wouldn't mess it up this badly. Hopefully they recognize their mistake soon and fix it before they lose out on potential sales. This is the first album I have reviewed in a while but I decided that anything by Collective Soul is worth reviewing and at the very least giving a listen to. The album has eleven new tracks including their newest single, "Holl...

RizzoMusic's Recently Discovered Songs Playlist
2007-08-23 03:59:00
Lately I have been listening to a lot of music, most of which I never heard before. A lot of it has been from some of my favorite artists, but some have just been random songs that I have come across. I have been going through some old albums as well as some new ones and I decided to make a new playlist with some of my new favorites. I would just like to make a note of Dishwalla, a band that I recently rediscovered and started to listen to them extensively. Know most for their classic radio hit, "Counting Blue Cars", they are a band that is much deeper then their one hit wonder status. If you happen to like "Coral Sky", which is in this playlist, I suggest you check out more of their latest album, which is self-titled. Some of my favorites from that album are "Above The Wreckage", "Collide" and "40 Stories". If your more of a fan of their older music you should definitely check out their "Live... From The Flow State" album. Well, that's it for this week. Hope you enjoyed it.Top 10 ...

Collective Soul's New Album "Afterwards"
2007-08-18 05:08:00
Collective Soul is still alive and kicking. One of the most popular rock bands of the 90s, they scored big hits with "Shine", "Heavy", "Run", "The World I Know", "Precious Declaration", and "December". They have recently released their new single, "Hollywood", which is now availiable for download on itunes. They also revamped their website at www.collectivesoul.com where you can listen to the new single for free. The website is looking a lot more professional then their previous one and it is a lot easier to navigate. They are currently on tour with Live and Counting Crows promoting their new single as well as their new album, "Afterwards", to be released this month on the 28th. At their shows they are giving out music download cards to the first 300 attendees for the opportunity to download "Hollywood" for free. I had a chance to hear Collective Soul in concert with Live this summer and they were outstanding. They played some of their new album and it sounded pretty good. I am a p...

Better Than Ezra - "Live Again" Live At The House Of Blues In New Orleans
2007-08-16 04:36:00
First of all I would like to say that this is one of my favorite songs and not just by Better Than Ezra. The studio version is great but the live one brings that extra edge to it. It starts off with a piano solo and the kicks off to one of Kevin's classic explanations of what the song is all about. I've had the pleasure to see these guys in concert a couple of times and they are great live. Kevin has a great stage presence and is usually really funny with his comments between songs. If your a Better Than Ezra fan and have a chance to go see them, they surely won't disappoint. Though they are past their prime in terms of mainstream popularity they still have a good fan base and tour fairly consistently year round. Anyway, I was listening to their live album today and I came across this song and thought I would share it with you. It's a good one, hope you like it. "Enough Said."

Female Artists of the 90s Playlist
2007-08-15 03:34:00
After a long hiatus, it is back to the playlists. They have been fairly popular in the past and I hope that they continue to be. This time Rizzo Music takes a look back on some artists that don't get enough credit. There were several female artists that defined a section of the music being developed in the 90s. There was the pop side, with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Jenifer Lopez, which I tried to stay away from. Then there was the side that I enjoyed, with deep ballads from Sarah Mclachlan and alternative rock from the hugely popular Alanis Morissette. Here I showcase my top ten female artists from the 90s with No Doubt thrown in there because to ignore the impact this group had on the music world would be a shame. Most likely you will recognize most of these songs as all of them were fairly popular. My favorites from this list have to be the first two songs with Sarah's "Sweet Surrender" and Jewel's "Hands". That's it for this week. Hope you enjoyed it.Top 10 Song...

Our Lady Peace - Thief Music Video Tribute
2007-08-13 03:45:00
This is one of those songs that not many people know about but it is one of my all time favorites. The music video itself is nothing tremendous but the song is something to be treasured. The video basically just shows the band members getting drenched by a downpour. They don't seem phased and they have some pretty cool slow motion shots of the water falling on their faces. The song itself is actually about a young girl they knew that had a brain tumor. The "Thief" inside her head refers to the tumor itself. The video does a good job to set the mood of the song and you can almost see the helplessness in the band member's eyes. The rain doesn't seem to bother them because they are too concerned for the young girl's life and feel that they can do nothing to help her. The song starts out with such powerful lyrics, that if you listen carefully to the words, it almost gives you the chills. "I don't want to understand this horror /There's a weight in your eyes that I can't admit..."...

Jimmy Eat World's New Album Chase This Light
2007-08-11 02:50:00
One of my favorite bands and a highly underrated one at that, Jimmy Eat World has set a release date for their new album. "Chase This Light " is set to hit stores October 16th. The band finished up recording back in May and are currently out touring in Europe. For this tour they have said they are playing some of their more mellower songs. Getting a chance to hear Polaris or 23 live would be incredible. They are also playing some of their new songs too so this tour is really not something you want to miss out on. I am really excited about this album, and so is the band. They have said that they are hoping that from now on their won't be so much time between released. If this new album is anything like their first three, it surely won't disappoint. The new album was produced by Butch Vig, famous for producing albums for Nirvana and the newly revived Smashing Pumpkins. I will have more updates on this album and the singles to be released in the near future. This fall should be a goo...

Matchbox Twenty Is Back!
2007-08-05 21:44:00
And after about a three month hiatus, I am back as well. I was watching some Music Choice today, much like any other day and I came across Matchbox Twenty 's new single, "How Far We've Come". I had to look twice to realize that it was in fact Matchbox Twenty and that the release date was indeed 2007. This is great news for any alternative music fan that was not all together thrilled with Rob Thomas' solo career. Although it was fairly successful for Rob, it didn't carry the same flavor that the group as a whole brings. Hopefully when they release their new album, "Exile on Mainstream" on October 2nd, they will revive some of that lost 90s music magic. I am really looking forward to it as well as the tour that will most likely follow the release. The new single isn't anything that blew me away but nonetheless a solid single and a break from some of the less than stellar songs out right now. There website, www.matchboxtwenty.com, has been updated to promote the new album but there...

SNL In The 90s: A Look At The Music
2007-05-07 06:33:00
A great recap to a great decade. Saturday Night Live is a show that I really have enjoyed over the last decade or so. From Chris Farley to Chris Rock, this show was stacked with comedic geniuses. This television special had plenty of commentary from almost all the great cast members of the 1990s but it was lacking a little in the video clips. With such a long span to cover, it was hard to fit everything into a two hour special but I think that they did a good job. You really go wrong with Chris Farrley's Matt Foley skit or Will Farrell's Cowbell performance. It was really fun to see all the old cast members come back to talk about the golden age of SNL that was the early 90s. The cool thing about it was that their were only a few missing from the commentary, the only one that I noticed was Adam Sandler. Me, being such a avid 90s music fan, loved that fact that they included a bunch of past performances from so many good bands. The musical acts have always been an intricate part of...

Featured Song: Paint the Silence by South
2007-05-05 07:02:00
This is the first of many featured song articles I am going to write this summer. I though I would start it off with one of my recent favorites. This song was brought to my attention by a friend of mine and ever since I just can't stop listening to it. South is a British rock band that formed in 1998. South is a band that is not very popular in the US yet but they have been compared to bands like Oasis and The Verve. They got some press when this song was featured on the popular television show, The OC. I haven't had a chance to listen to a lot of their music but this song is very good. Paint the Silence is a song that doesn't come around too often and leaves you wanting more. The lyrics speak of frustration and a longing for something better. You can hear a live version of the song along with a video here. If you prefer to just hear the studio version of the song, check it on imeem here. Please let me know what you think of the song and if you want, make some recommendations for...

New Switchfoot Single: Awakening
2007-05-04 05:58:00
Hey guys, the summer is finally here and I will be posting almost everyday now. I will bringing you all the music news that you can handle along with some reviews and of course, the weekly playlists. This time I would just like to bring to your attention Switchfoot's new single, Awake ning. As you can see by reading my review of their album here, that I correctly predicted that this would be the next single and it is a good one at that. The new music video, which I will post at the end of this article, was released about a month ago but I have yet to hear it on the radio or see it on MTV. Hopefully it will get some airplay this summer. This video is great, one of my favorites from Switchfoot. As a avid guitar hero fan, I found this video to accurately portray the average Guitar Hero addict. The music video is hilarious and the song is great, not much more to say. Check it out.

Wow, has it been a long time. My lack of posting has been rather pathetic and I appologize. The summer is just around the corner and I will be posting a lot more often, updating you with music news, reviews and more playlists. For this playlist I wanted to give you a little taste of summer as the school year is almost over and hopefully this cold april weather is going to heat up this week. These ten songs might seem very random but they are some of my favorite songs and either have something to do with summer or just remind me of the season. I would just like to point out one song in particular, "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)" by Jason Mraz. This song really has nothing to do with summer but I can remember listening to it constantly just a few summers ago and it seems that it is a song that might have been forgotten. I thought I would bring to light some classics like OMC and some songs you might not of heard of like "Just watch the Fireworks". Hopefully I can get a couple more posts...

This Saturday is none other then St. Patrick's and there is nothing better then putting on some Irish music while you have a good time. I picked some songs that have to do with the holiday specifically or just have a celtic or irish tune to them. You might recognize the first song from the movie Boondock Saints, a St. Patrick's Day favorite. It was fairly hard to come up with a solid ten songs but I think I did a pretty good job.
