Bob sings about Alicia Keys on new album...
2006-12-31 16:27:02
The first track Thunder on the Mountain on Modern Times mentions a certain songstress Alicia Keys ...'Thunder on the mountain, fires on the moon, There's a ruckus in the alley and the sun will be here soon,'... 'I was thinking about Alicia Keys, couldn't help from crying/When she was born in Hell's Kitchen, I was living down the line/I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be/I been looking for her even clean through Tennessee.'Here's my poem to Bob.I come home from the party, drinking sour wine all night.I was wondering about Bob Dylan,he wasnt there, isn't that right? They played Christy Moore songs, the party was no bore-And just before I left, they sang,Knockin' On Heaven's Door.Wind in the village, lost out on Main St,something in the way he moves, moves me alright.

The Factory Girl has been getting terrible reviews, but is it as bad as they say, or is it because, according to reports the original version has been watered down? And is it creating a relationship with Dylan and Edie that never existed, to sell tickets?(There is a piece written somewhere about Bob, Edie and Bob Neuwrith going to see the Christmas lights of a Catholic Church one evening, but apart from the suspicions that Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat and Just Like A Woman were written by Dylan about Edie, no-one is saying anything else.)But, you know with these biopics of celebrities lives, fiction nearly always has a hand in them.Mind you, one report has said that the Quinn character (Dylan) is the only voice of reason in the film. Liam Clancy and Odetta play Vicar St
2006-12-31 16:27:02
It was great to see Liam Clancy andOdetta tear up Vicar St with a setlistof Irish trad tunes and Southernblues. A mix of stories, humour, sing-a-longs-noone got away with keeping theirmouths shut-least of all the audience-these entertainers know how tocommunicate with flair and warmth.Bob Dylan was heavily featured, Liamrecounted the Greenwich Village daysin the 60s with much affection-photosin the background-it actually seemedas if the only person missing was Dylan. The main picture was a shot of TheWhite Horse Tavern with The Clancys,Tommy Makem, Theodore Bikel, PeterLaFarge and Odetta, all present.Liam is obviously very fond of Bob,as he talked of how he brought himto The White Horse and mentionedthat Dylan is a genius. Also mentioning the fact that Dylan rarely speaks to his audience these days, Clancy said in the 60s that youcouldnt shut him up!There was even a tape of Bob doing his "This is the American version of an Irish version of a Liam Clancy song, heard it in The White Hor...

Interview with Michael Gray, author:new book, The Bob Dylan EncyclopdediaI emailed Michael Gray, author of Song and DanceMan III and the eagerly awaited Bob Dylan Encyclopedia (out July 13th here, June 15th US) some questions on the book and this is what he answered.Hi Mary. Here goes... *Describe in five words how it feels to have this book coming out? Exciting, an achievement, a relief! *What was your favourite/most interesting part to write? I think I have three favourite kinds of entry. First, entries on musicians who have played with Dylan at some point, for which instead of just repeating known facts I contacted them directly - so I've been able to offer the results of fresh research, re-looking at, for example, Sandy Konikoff, one of Dylan's 1966 drummers, and reporting how some such musicians feel now about their Dylan experiences. Second, it was novel for me to be writing about someone like Sara Dylan (Bob's first wife)because all my past interest in Dylan has been about...

Arlo At Vicar St
2006-12-31 16:27:02
Arlo Guthrie:Vicar St,Friday August 18thArlo Guthrie's gig at Vicar St started off quiet enough, but by the second half it was in high gear, with the audience reacting very positively.A Jim Morrisonlookey likey particularly made animpression!A rousing Alice's Restaurant,Coming Into Los Angelos, Good Morning America and numerous anecdotes, jokey spiels, musingson problems of the world stage, and plain good ol music,it was a memorable occasion.Featured in the band were Abe Guthrie,(keyboards) Krishna Guthrie (drums) and Gordon Titcomb (mandolin, keyboards) who looked like they were enjoying themselves and despite the laid back feel managed to ignite quite a lot of response from the crowd.Included in the set were The Little Beggar-man, My Darkest Hour, This Land Is Your Land and Mr.Tambourine Man (with Arlo doing the old Bob Dylan knocking at the door to their house in 1961 story). He also played a tape of his dad Woody talking at aparty which will be part of a new Woody Guthrie releas...

2006-12-31 16:27:02
Bob Dylan reckons he's in his 'middle years' now, so if sixty-five is the new forty-five or fifty he's got a lot more time for musical expeditions left in him. He's just appeared in an ad for Apple's I-Pod and god know where he'll turn up next!

2006-12-31 16:27:02
Just checked out the reviews of Dylan gigs in France (on Bob Links). Soundslike a similiar experience to here, but he did To Ramona and It's AlrightMa (ahhh, would have liked to hear them). There's usually a mention of Bob'slack of communication with the fans. It's true Bob doesn't speak to the audience except at the end and I dearlywish he would say more-but maybe he'sright to let the music speak for itself-either way it doesnt detract too muchfrom the whole experience.

It's been a spectacular year for Bob Dylan. A new radio show that is both intriguing & entertaining (& a musical treat),three successful American tours with an equally brilliant European Tour thrown in, and a No.1 album Modern Times, making him the oldest person ever to have an American No.1. Bob was at the start of Rock music and it's likely he has plans to be there at the end as well :-)(Best Album above from Daily MirrorUK & Ireland today)

(The face of Dylan -poster selling on the streetsof Kilkenny)Review-Bob Dylan, Nowlan Park, KilkennyJune 24.From Bob Dylan sing-a-longs in a certainKilkenny pub, (amidst hen parties from Dublin and elsewhere)in the afternoon of Dylan's gig to street buskers being cajoled into performing "The Hurricane" and "DontThink Twice" on the same street late atnight, Saturday 24th June was Bob DylanDay in Kilkenny.Dylan himself was in fine voice afterinitial nerves and a few wobbles-it was wonderful to hear his voice sound so strong and he showcased the songs to great, loud affect, stopping between eachsong to mooch to the back of the stageand drink some water. The songs were mainly taken from Blondeon Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited andBringing It all Back Home, with LoveSick and Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dumalso in the set.The atmosphere was great, with everyonethere to see Bob (btw The Flaming Lipswere brilliant) and he seemedhappy with the crowd reaction, despitethe fact he actually looked into th...

I'm just not convinced that Bob was pilferingold Confedearte poets for material for ModernTimes, despite some fans apparently findingHenry Timrod's name in the spelling of the No.1 title.I think most writers experience the phenomenonof putting down some words on paper and findingsomeone else has already written it. A least it's made people familiar with the poet.(Although I think that Zim could acknowledge theRollin and Tumblin and Nettie Moore sources...)The same words?"How then,O weary One! explain/The sources ofthat hidden pain"Henry Timrod, Two Portraits"Cant explain,/The sources of this hidden pain."Bob Dylan, Spirit On The Water"A round of precious hours. Oh! here, where inthat summer noon I basked, And strove with logic frailer than the flowers"Henry Timrod, A Rhapsody Of A Southern WinterNight"More frailer than the flowers, these precioushours"Bob Dylan, When The Deal Goes Downquotes source Bo Petersen at post and courier.com

The Ballad Of Bob And Henry
2006-12-08 16:09:03
Suzanne Vega makes an excellant point inher article in the New York Times about theaccusations of plagiarism surrounding BobDylan. She quotes a song she wrote (presum-ably this century) and a poem by Rumi, themystic Sufi poet. Same ideas, almost samescene. Co-incidence? Probably. It happens.Writers experience this. Of course, if youwant to enhance your work with someoneelse's words, you can too, within reason, like a smattering. But how could a fan callDylan a "thieving swine" dont they knowanything about him? Like his biography?"Did he do this on purpose? I doubt it. Maybe he has a photographic memory, and bits of text stick to it.These days if a sample of music is taken, you have to acknowledge the original artists and pay them. (See: ?Tom?s Diner.?) Shouldn?t the same courtesy be extended to all intellectual property? In other words, is he really ?a thieving little swine?as one ?fan? puts it?"-Suzanne Vega, NY Times 17th September.Yeah, Dylan may need to have a look at hisethics ...

Gathered From Coincidence??
2006-12-08 16:09:03
The Dylan/Timrod debate rolls on...*An email from DJ Scott Warmuth cites sixincidences in which the lyrics of "WhenThe Deal Goes Down" are similiar to apoem by Henry Timrod, four in "Beyond TheHorizon", three in Workingman's Blues #2and two in "Rollin and Tumblin"Doesnt seem so much like a mattter ofcoincidence after all. When I replied to Scott that I was partlyplaying Devil's Advocate when I wrote Iwasnt convinced that Dylan was pilferingold Confederate poets, (see posts) he replied, "I can appreciate that but I don't think that Suzanne Vega was playing devil's advocate in her New York Times editorial where she wrote, ?Did he do this on purpose? I doubt it.? which struck me as preposterous."Scott made the point that this is allin the spirit of discussion on thesubject.*Author Gerard Beirne (An Eskimo in theNet) brought the subject of Johnny Cash'sFolsom Prison Blues into the ring- the line "I shot a man in Reno just to watchhim die" reminiscent of Jimmie Rodgers'lines:?I?m Go...

Echo's Interest In Early Bob Tape
2006-12-08 16:09:03
Echo Helstrom, Bob's Hibbing girlfriend hasshown an interest in buying his early tape, from 1959, which is to be auctioned soon."We know that "Echo" Bob's girlfriend in high school has expressed some interest. As far as Bob, I haven't heard anything but you never know." according to Veronica Shrum of Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas."This tape, which has been held by Ric Kangas all these years, is about as rough as they come," says Doug Norwine, Director of Music and Entertainment Auctions for Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries, "but it's a wonderful window into the early efforts of a musical legend. This is Dylan stretching his musical chops, experimenting with what he could do, and we can see, with perfect hindsight, how the seeds of what would become a brilliant musical career are being planted right here.""The tape includes four songs," Norwine says. "'I Got Trouble,' and 'I Got a New Girl,' along with 'I Wish I Knew,' in which Dylan can be heard backing up Kangas...

Modern Times Review and Info
2006-12-06 04:04:04
Dylan's Heart Of DarknessModern Time s starts out on a journey with optimism, energy and verve(Thunder On The Mountain) and ends up with the lone protagonist walking through "citiesof the plaque" (Aint Talkin').In between it delves into all kinds of humanissues: love, faith, dependence, work, outrage, attraction, destiny, vengeance and naturaldisasters, while the lone figure is 'travellinon' like a gothic cowboy. The setting istimeless-it could be the middle ages, it could be 1950, it could be 2050.The latest Dylan persona has a kind ofinherent contradiction, as he starts offwanting to please someone, "I'm your servant, both day and night" (Thunder), by the thirdsong he's asserting himself, "I aint nobody'shouse boy, I aint nobody's servant" (Rollin)while lamenting in the great Aint Talkin'(as he tries to be kind) "Oh mother, thingsaint going well."He sees "the world going black before hiseyes"-"gone berserk, too much paperwork"There are those who "jump on your misfortune"(Aint...
