MARK RONSON WITH THE BBC ORCHESTRA...
2007-10-19 20:02:00 Have you all seen the line-up for this year's annual BBC Electric Proms? Its looking pretty tasty from what I've been reading and there is some exciting moments brewing!Sigur Rós will screen their beautiful new film 'Heima' for the first time to a UK audience and follow it with a unique stripped down acoustic performance of their music.Kaiser Chiefs are linking up with legendary Grammy Award winner David Arnold. Arnold, famed for his work scoring James Bond films, will be taking a brand new approach to the arrangement and performance of some of the band's biggest anthems. But surely the most exciting item on the bill has to be that of the innovative British born and New York based producer/DJ, Mark Ronson . He will be creating a live performance consistent with his re-interpretive know-how of indie re-mixes and will also be backed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and by several special guests (including Candie Payne & Tim Burgess) to perform expanded and new arrangements. If last...
UNDER THE COVERS # 4...
2007-10-19 02:40:00 It's Friday people! That means the time is ripe for more cover songs! There's some goodies in this bunch, most notably, Kate Nash's rendition of the Arctic Monkey's modern classic, 'Fluorescent Adolescent' and Editors kicking out The Cure's 'Lullaby'.The Last Town Chorus also impress with Culture Club's 80s floor filler 'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?' and Bodies Of Water do fair justice to REM's 'Everybody Hurts'. I'm also loving the Raconteurs' 'Teenage Kicks' and Dan Kelly's 'Nothing Compares To You' both enthrals me and scares me a little! I know that posts have been few and far between this week, so I hope this makes up for it! BITCHEE BITCHEE YA YA YA...
2007-10-17 22:06:00 You can probably surmise from the name and picture that it's gonna be some kind of bleepy sleazy electro pop-rock... and you'd be completly right! What else would we force upon you! There seems to be rather a big-beat influence creeping into BBYYY's tracks though, a genre that's probably ripe for revival just about now and if so this is the shit that will thoroughly violate that corpse of the 80s!The single 'Fuck Friend' is out on November 17th, 2007 and includes extra remixes.BBYYY have also been chosen by URB to fight it out among the next 1000 bands so go vote for them [here] or be their buddy [here].MP3 : Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya - BeforeMP3 : Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya - Tu Connais Le Chanson

PRAM: LIVE @ BIRMINGHAM TOWN HALL...
2007-10-16 20:24:00 Last night I went to the Birmingham (UK) Town Hall to partake in it's re-opening festival. Pram were the headliners with support provided by The Modified Toy Orchestra and Shady Bard - all relatively local bands.I have to confess - my decision to go was purely based upon the selfish fact that I'm a massive Shady Bard fan and believe them to be one of the most underrated bands in the UK. Their album 'From The Ground Up' was released back in May, 2007 and its definitely taken a firm place in my top ten albums so far this year.Putting my bias aside though, Shady Bard were on total top form and completely in their element under the new grand high ceilings and palatial soft lighting of the Town Hall. There is always a reserved front to Becko's front-man image and last night wasn't any exception - he would quietly and softly address the audience in a bespoken, come, slightly confused manner, but the audience always seems to hush-up and warm to its appeal. Once things got started, th... More About: Live
RORY MCVICAR ISN'T A JAMES BLUNT...
2007-10-14 22:00:00 If I mention that Rory McVicar is a singer/songwriter from the UK, you will probably groan and moan, and leap to all bounds of conclusions that he should be dragged outside with the likes of James Morrision and executed with a sharp instrument! However, being Norwich's biggest singer/songwriter may not be the greatest claim-to-fame you could ever want, but at least Rory McVicar isn't James Blunt ! His approach is more twisted and less defined than his evil-arch nemesis' sickly pop acoustic-jams and McVicar makes it clear with his music that he is very much from the other side of the singer/songwriter tracks. It would be greater justice to compare McVicar to that of a British Willy Mason [link] than anything else, however, I wouldn't insist on that being a platform for any description of McVicar's music as he is his own element and has a brand that is only tainted by his own style. There is a single currently in circulation, 'The Thing You Do' and he has recently just recorded fi...
NEW LAURA MARLING - 'NIGHT TERROR'...
2007-10-14 18:30:00 Here's the video for Laura Marling 's awesome new song, 'Nighht Terror '. It's taken from her new EP, 'My Manic & I', the follow up to her acclaimed 'London Town' EP, which was released back in April.Laura seems to divert towards a different direction with this video, her visual aura has always been a little dark, but this boarders on the truly sinister. It's certainly an element we've not seen added to Laura's music and she is definitely taking us into new waters here, but overall, I think it works perfectly! The new EP contains four tracks: 'New Romantic' - the heavily played Myspace favourite and EP lead track; 'Night Terror' - an eerily haunting tale of protection and defiance; 'My Manic And I' - the title track which reflects doubt and delusion at the heart of man, and 'Typical' - a song which deals with the human condition. OUT THIS WEEK...
2007-10-14 16:35:00 This week the UK sees the likes of Spank Rock and Benny Blanco's 'Bangers & Cash' EP hit the shelves on import and Octopus Project release their 3rd album and instrumental master piece, 'Hello Avalanche', which I previewed a few weeks ago [link]. Also, the much loved Scout Niblett returns with 'This Fool Can Die Now' and Ojos De Brujo put out their awesome 'Techari Live' DVD/CD combo. The Fiery Furnaces' 'Window City' is another great release and the UK finally gets Jana Hunter's 'Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom', which to my ears is nothing short of a modern classic. Other notable releases are - ex Moloko [link] front-lady, Róisín Murphy's 'Overpowered', Efterklang's dutifully awesome 'Parades', Mariee Sioux's folked up 'Faces in The Rocks' and Fortune Drives brilliant homegrown debut 'A Modern Question'. Also, Underworld release 'Crocodiles' and A Wisper In The Noise put out their indie-come-classical 'Dry Land'.Róisín Murphy - Let Me Know [MP3] The... More About: Week
THE LODGER ANNOUNCE U.S TOUR DATES...
2007-10-13 16:40:00 Leeds, UK-based band The Lodger have announced its first string of US dates on the east coast later this month on the heels of the release of its debut album 'Grown-Ups'.The trio sound unapologetically influenced by several generations of their indie countrymen: flashes of Orange Juice [link] and The Wedding Present [link] permeate their debut album. But they're more than just C-86-addicted anoraks attempting to replicate the cooler parts of their record collections. Opening track 'Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion', with its scratchily energetic guitar parts and snarky lyrics, clearly owes a bit to the David Gedge songbook, and the winsome bubblegum melody and lovelorn lyrics of 'The Story's Over' are tailor-made for a cover by Amelia Fletcher's [link] next band. But the young trio perform their brand of earnest semi-twee indie pop with such scrappy enthusiasm and emotional directness that accusations of near-plagiarism simply don't stick. The Lodger's music is classic ... OUT THE INBOX: SIBERIAN...
2007-10-12 19:36:00 Siberian hail from the Starbucks mother-city of Seattle and, to be blunt, are freakin' awesome! They've been around since circa 2004 and their original demo, although never intended for release, made quite a splash with the local pond-life across the music scene. Siberian's sound is a tough one to pigeon hole, yes - it's indie, and yes - it's good, but it seems often to wind out of the indie-norm and deviate from conventional paths into bordering genres - shoegaze and Brit-pop do occasionally come to mind, but yet again, there is enough of their own uniqueness kneaded into the music to make it run a little deeper than all the aforementioned.Personally speaking, Siberian are one of the better and more promising bands I've received in my inbox, there's a real talent and ingenuity here - which is quite surprising given their only a young group. Their defining sound and lust for great emotive music is transparent in every note and earth moving crescendo - If I was you, I would de... More About: Inbox , Iberia

MORE FREE ALBUMS...
2007-10-11 21:31:00 With the "pay-what-you-want" strategy employed by members of Radiohead for the release of their new album, 'In Rainbows,' it is no secret that free music is a promising trend that musicians are considering for distribution of their work. But, offering free entire albums is nothing new in the online indie realm. CONTROL - THE MOVIE...
2007-10-11 20:06:00 Last night I went to see the new Ian Curtis biopic, 'Control ' and was pleasantly surprised. The movie is a biography of Joy Division's front-man, Ian Curtis and is based on a book by Curtis? wife Debbie. 'Control' attempts to track the tormented singer?s life from his late high-school years, through his improbably early marriage, through the founding of the band, their rise to fame, his long standing affair with a Belgian diplomat, his late onset epilepsy - and finally - to his death by suicide at the age of twenty three. The subject matter of the film is well familiar to any music fan - no one needs reminding of how Joy Division?s influence loomed huge throughout the eighties, not least of which through the massive success of the band that rose from it?s ashes ? the surviving members founding New Order following Curtis? passing. As history there?s really nothing new here, there are no sudden revelations to come by, but the film excels as a simple, heartfelt portrait of the man h... More About: Movie , The Movie

JONNA LEE WITH ED HARCOURT...
2007-10-09 19:18:00 Sweden's Jonna Lee sounds like some what of a perfectionist - she apparently made quite a good electro album last year, but changed her mind just prior to the release because "it didn't feel right". After that she started the whole process again and wrote, recorded, and produced her official debut album, '10 pieces, 10 bruises' which is out in the UK on October 15th, 2007.Jonna has collaborated with some surprising people on '10 pieces, 10 bruises' - she wrote the song 'And Your Love' with Ed Harcourt [link] solely in mind, sent him the song and then good ol' Ed recorded it as a duet just a few weeks later! Ed must have found something special in Jonna as he features on quite a lot of the album and his musical-touch is predominant throughout it's entirety as a producer and musician. The name dropping doesn't stop there though, '10 pieces, 10 bruises' was mostly recorded while Jonna and Ed travelled through England during the Summer - while doing so, they dropped by Super...

BEST OF BRITISH...
2007-10-07 22:52:00 In my never ending quest for great music and banging beats I sometimes stumble upon, get given or am forced at gun point to listen to a lot of unsigned or small label bands/artists. This isn't half as band as it sounds and I'm sure that I don't need to point out the incredibly obvious fact that - amidst the talentless and try-hards, there is a lot of great music floating around Britain at a grassroots level - and frankly, some of it warrants more recognition than it actually gets. So, in an attempt to shine a little spot-light on all that great music that's slowly trying to climb it's way out of the proverbial British -music-barrel, let me offer you a flask of tea and take you on a brisk walk around merry ol' England to see just what's making my playlist from the under-belly of the British music scene. Our first stop is York, home to the awesome Deltawave [link], who stand as living proof that British indie and dance can be the best of friends when properly introduced. UNKLE - 'HOLD MY HAND'...
2007-10-06 23:38:00 'Hold My Hand ' is the second video from UNKLE's third album, 'War Stories'. It weaves a dark, soft-focused picture of seedy stairwells and creepy sidewalks as James Lavelle vocalizes the drama further with an edgy mood until the guitars stretch their legs - then the song really comes into fruition.I'm not sure whether there's any symbolism to be had in this vid, but the taut, edgy mood follows nicely in the vein of the nail-biting, video for 'Burn My Shadow', the Ian Astbury-fronted first single. The 'Hold My Hand' single is out October 22nd, 2007 and War Stories is out now, both via Surrender All.+ Official website [link]+ Myspace [link]+ Buy [link] More About: Unkle
THE OCTOPUS PROJECT - ALBUM PREVIEW...
2007-10-05 16:59:00 The Octopus Project are on the cusp of releasing their 3rd album 'Hello Avalanche' on October 16th, 2007, via Peek-A-Boo Records [link]. This wil be their first full length release in 2 years and was recorded and co-produced by Ryan Hadlock (Blonde Redhead, The Gossip) at Bear Creek Studio in Seattle - then mixed by Erik Wofford (Voxtrot, Explosions In The Sky) back in their hometown, Austin, TX.I sometimes find that instrumental albums can be a little long-winded and hard to swallow in their entirety, but 'Hello Avalanche' appears to be a very rare exception to an old rule. There's a diversity here that almost acts as an engine for the album, propelling it forward with exciting twists and unlikely turns. Every track seems to bounce off of the next in wonderful flashes of exploding fuzzy-guitar-riffs, which then melt deliciously into soft organ led melodies with the occasional warbling vocal sample - the track 'I Saw The Bright Shinies' particularly sounds like some freakish ... 2007-10-05 11:26:00 Last night I was sitting here at the computer, minding my own business, when Stockholm's ambient indie-rockers, Tender Souvenirs leaped out of the screen and hit me in the face! OK - the events didn't quite happen like that, but it sure did feel like it at the time - I could not believe my ears and was completely impressed! We are talking vast open musical landscapes here, wide arching stars made of out of twinkling melodies that float away into the ether, taking everything and everyone listening with it. WE ALL LiKE TRAiNS...
2007-10-04 15:30:00 It's a real pleasure to see iLiKETRAiNS getting some love and glory for their debut release 'Elegies to Lessons Learnt'. Over the last couple of years if you've opened any English music magazine and flicked though the show listings, you'll have seen the name iLiKETRAiNS starring back at you on nearly all occasions. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE - THE MOVIE...
2007-10-04 03:10:00 'Across The Universe ' is an honorable movie failure. It's one thing to reach for the stars, but another to capture them - right? Director Julie Taymor, best known for her Broadway production of The Lion King, has turned her extravagant vision once again to a musical, this time using the music of The Beatles (WTF - right?). With wonderful songs and moments of sumptuous imagery, 'Across The Universe ' has much to admire, but ultimately the film's sprawling, unfocussed story and abundance of awkward moments prevent it fulfilling its promise.Given a firmer hand, a more effective film lurks within the unnecessarily long time it takes to go nowhere. The script by the experienced duo of Dick Clement and Ian LaFrenais wanders aimlessly, uncertain of which direction it wants to take. Set in the Sixties, it moves between Liverpool and Greenwich Village. At its heart is the obvious love story, but 'Across The Universe' devotes much of its time to the politically turbulent period of Amer... More About: Movie , The Movie , Across the Universe
THE TROUBADOURS...
More articles from this author:2007-10-04 02:11:00 Liverpool based back-beat indie-popsters The Troubadours seem to be making some tiny waves in England at the moment. They've teamed up with legendary indie producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Muse, Pink Floyd), Q Magazine [link] listed them in their 50 essential downloads of August and also featured 'Gimme Love' as their track of the day back in May, 2007.I know in my heart that not everyone will "get" what it is The Troubadours are doing with their Northern soul sound, but I honestly hold it quite dear - their music sounds like a perfect celebration of British indie music and it's roots. Every guitar-twang and 'ooh la la' vocal harmony offering seems to embrace such a large empire of great British bands that have stepped before them. Even upon my first listen I could instantaneously hear the effect and influence of such bands as James, The Stone Roses, The La's, Oasis and more obviously The Beatles - the original Mersey-beat band!Listening to The Troubadours is admittedly not... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 |
