JOSE GONZALEZ IN CONCERT...
2007-10-03 15:10:00
I seem to be spending a lot of my time over at NPR [link] lately due to the Live Concert Series [link] they're currently hosting. I brought you the news earlier this week of their Iron & Wine show at the 9:30 Club in Washington and now they're also streaming the full version of last night's Jose Gonzalez performance! There's been some really good shows streamed there over the last couple of weeks - Animal Collective [link], Iron & Wine [link], Rilo Kiley [link] and John Vanderslice [link] to mention a few and there's plenty more to follow! You can listen to last night's Jose Gonzalez performance at the 9:30 club, Washington here [link].Jose Gonzalez - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover) [MP3]+ Official website [link]+ Myspace [link]+ Buy [link]

I AM BONES ALBUM STREAM...
2007-10-03 14:27:00
New sons of indie-dirt-rock, I Am Bones released their their new album, 'The Greater Good' in Denmark this week (October 1st, 2007). I've spent some time playing it on and off all week and it seems to have secretly taken me over! There's nothing really to break the boundaries on 'The Greater Good', but it's definitely an album you simply just have to play loud and proud - crank up the volume and I defy you not to move around in time to the beat! However, there are some clever moments on the album, particularly where the dynamics of lovely indie-pop melodies clash with the heavier elements of guitars crashing and buzzing all over the place.Simply speaking 'The Greater Good' plays like some deranged marriage of euro-indie-pop and dirty-guitar-grunge, it really shouldn't work on any level, but strangely enough it works very well indeed - and if it ain't broke, why fix it!You can stream the full version of I Am Bones' 'The Greater Good' here [link] and they are currently o...

FUTURECOP IS FUTURE POP...
2007-10-02 14:54:00
Something I've really taken a liking to over the last couple of days is the one-man-and-a-laptop, Future cop! I've conducted quite a thorougher search of the Internet and am really shocked at the discovery that there is a serious lack of recognition here! Essentially one man (anyone know his real identity?), a laptop and a midi-keyboard from the Queen's capital, London, Futurecop is a genius merging of 80's fetishism and futuristic noise - like Daft Punk featuring in a John Hughes movie! This is pure unadulterated synth-pleasure overload, the future of possible pop music and great for the ladies to dance around their handbags too! There appears to be no official release as yet - not even a record company, but there are a few songs making their way through the ether, most notably 'Class of 84', which is an awesomely spiritual 80's homage that wouldn't be out of place wrapping up the closing credits to the Purple Rain movie as Prince suavely stands in the glow of all that lovel...
CLUB 8...
2007-10-02 01:03:00
Club 8 - one of the more darling acts on the Swedish Labrador label [link], brought forth their sixth album of lovely pop music last week (September 25th). Since the days of their first album 'Nouvelle' (pure twee indie pop) and their second album 'Friend I Once Had' (pure eurodisco kitsch), the band seems to have now comfortably settled within a world of dreamy indie-pop music.I've been giving the 'The Boy Who Couldn?t Stop Dreaming' some play-time this week and it gives off a whole lot of charm and lovely sounds. There?s not a whole lot of changes on the part of Club 8, but there are enough small refinements to make the album a must have for Club 8, or pure indie-pop fans. 'Jesus, Walk With Me', 'Heaven' and 'In The Morning' were definitely the best tracks on the album for me and I shall be playing them obsessively throughout the month no doubt. RADIOHEAD RELEASE FREE ALBUM...
2007-10-01 18:11:00
Radiohead have shocked the world by announcing plans to release their 7th and most anticipated album to date.Click on any blog or music webzine today and no doubt you will be faced with thousands of enthusiastically written articles about the event that came to light last night around midnight - Radiohead guitarist, Jonny Greenwood posted the following on the band's official website:"Hello everyone.Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days; we've called it 'In Rainbows'. Love from us all - Jonny"This announcement comes only days after an international media-fest, when a seemingly faux website [link] displayed a clock claiming that by the time it's countdown was complete the new Radiohead album would be released. Fans and web-watchers alike are now left slightly confused over the original prank and are wondering if this was all a clever marketing campaign leading up to last nights revelation. It's not beyond Radiohead to employ such strategies and the ban...

THE REAL TUESDAY WELD...
2007-10-01 01:02:00
The first thing that strikes you about any album by Stephen Cotes a.k.a - The Real Tuesday Weld is the fact that every element seems to be drawn from sources many decades old - it's like bringing an age-old Victorian back to life and politely asking him to make a record in some swanky West-End, London studio. The second thing that strikes you is just how completely new his music sounds!Upon first listen, Cotes' sophomore album, 'The Return of The Clerkenwell Kid' appeared to be something I desperately wouldn't be able to take too, however, after a few listens I have to admit I'm seriously liking the inventiveness of it's break-beat orientated and jazz-looped gramophone dynamics, which Cotes humorously refers to as the "antique beat". Call it what you will though, there are parts to this album that really are truly beautiful and very well orchestrated. You can catch The Real Tuesday Weld at Battersea Arts Centre in London on October 13th were he'll be doing his thing! 'The R...

KYTE ON TOUR...
2007-09-30 03:21:00
Having just released their debut single 'Planet' this week on Sonic Cathedral [link], Leicester ambient-shoegazers Kyte have now announced plans for their first tour covering the UK. They kicked things off last night by headlining their home town and will be going in the studio in between the rest of the shows to record a mini-album, due out in the early part of 2008!Kyte really seem to be picking up where The Postal Service [link] left off and the new single is as mature a debut as you're ever likely to hear. 'Planet' kicks off with a clear and chiming guitar introduction, which winds around a minimal but steadfast bassline to gradually establish Kyte's atmospheric assault. It's with the wheeling and swirling ghostly vocals, however, that you realise this band aren't merely flirting with grown-up music. Echoed and looped "you see, you see" combined with synthesized eeriness bonds the blast of what seems like a live show with gentle electronic ambiance, and with B-side 'Sec...

FANFARLO...
2007-09-29 14:24:00
One of the most promising bands around in the UK at the moment has to be that of Fanfarlo. They've been praised to the hilt by the one and only David Bowie, who seemingly can't get enough of them and it's rightly deserved. The band are currently in the studio working on their debut album and after the success of their double A-sided single 'Fire Escapes/We Live By The Lake' things seem to be going from strength to strength - as a thank you to fans who brought the single Fanfalo have recorded a cover version of Daniel Johnston's 'Devil Town'.I've heard many versions of this song, but this has to be the best so far. The lazy trumpet is lamenting, smooth and totally fits with what the original song tries to portray - this is way better than the Bright Eyes rendition! SONNY J...
2007-09-29 12:58:00
Sonny J, short for Sonnington James III, is a turntablist Scouser now living in Kent with a twin penchant for early-70s soul and early-70s cartoon spin-off telly shows featuring blockbuster pubescent soul-family ensembles. The video to his debut single 'Can't Stop Moving' is a Spike Jonze-ish hotpants-and-afro amateur retro-fest, which has shrill boy vocals that must surely be sampled from an old Jackson 5 album track.'Can't Stop Moving', which was released via iTunes earlier this month has the words "This Year's Gnarls Barkley" running through it like a stick of rock, its one of those scarily addictive songs-as-narcotics that they should liquidise and put in Pete Doherty's crackpipe. It's a legal high, baby!At the moment, the sonic eco-warrior's ambition is to recycle sonic detritus from pop's past to pave a way to the future. From what I've read 'Disastro', his debut album, which is scheduled for release October 22nd, 2007 will feature rapping French schoolchildren, ...

ANNA FRANK...
2007-09-29 03:01:00
Swedish darling, Anna Frank has been described by many as an experimental singer/songwriter, but I strongly disagree with this statement and here's why - her music is strangely beautiful, it's not far-out there and ludicrously ambitious, just perfectly calm and still like a picturesque lake in Winter. Her music doesn't over reach it's aims and has a zen like core to it, it's not experimental, it's great mood music - and that is precisely is why I love it! At the moment Anna Frank is busy recording with Ove Andersson (producer of Fat Cat Records) and Claes Olson (executive producer MNW Records), working on her sophomore release - word has it that her management are currently negotiating with a few select Swedish indie labels and is hoping for a first international release later this year. SUNDAY DRIVERS...
2007-09-29 01:02:00
After traveling through the Middle East Sunday Drivers ' vocalist-guitarist Brady Erickson met bassist Marisa Dupuis. Once back in Los Angeles the two found the last piece of their puzzle in guise of drummer Bryan Zaebst, a native Texan who had gone to LA to attend art school. Together they created the 'Archetypes' EP. On the first track from the EP, 'The Sweetest Disguise', the band shows a knack for crafting hook-filled nods to new-wave bands of the early 80s. A danceable backbeat combines with airy synths to produce what The Killers might have gone on to do had they not become so obsessed with Bruce Springsteen.Sunday Drivers - The Sweetest Disguise [MP3] + Official website [link]+ Myspace [link]+ Buy [link]
GEORGE HARRISON...
2007-09-28 17:53:00
Martin Scorsese is set to direct a film about the life of George Harris on with the help of his widow Olivia, and Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney may star. The 'rock doc' will take an in depth look at Harrison 's life, covering his time in The Beatles, his solo career and his involvement with films including Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' and 'Time Bandits'. It will also delve into the private life of Harrison - who died in 2001 after losing his battle with lung cancer aged 58 - with Scorsese planning to work closely with Harrison's widow Olivia. Scorsese has commented, "Harrison's music and his search for spiritual meaning is a story that still resonates today and I'm looking forward to delving deeper." The rumour mills are already buzzing with some magazines claiming that the two surviving Beatles (Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney - for anyone who doesn't know) will be getting involved. This is not the first time Scorsese has explored the life of rock stars, having previous...

Preivews of the new Beirut album seem to be in seriously high demand lately, but the greatest turn up so far has to be that of the La Blogothèque's [link] latest ingenius venture - they've teamed up with the band in Brooklyn, New York to film a video for each forthcoming track from the now highly antisipated, 'The Flying Club Cup'. The latest video for 'Cliquot' is the 5th song and sees a suprising appearance from Grizzly Bear's [link] Edward Droste on joint vocals! All of La Blogothèque's video's will be published on a dedicated website - which you can find here [link]. Beirut's new record, 'The Flying Club Cup', will be available in stores October 9th, 2007. PICASTRO | THE MAKESTRANGE...
2007-09-28 13:28:00
One of the nicest little records of this little year is Pica stro's 'Whore Luck' - released to little fanfare in early September, 2007 and featuring contributions from both Owen Pallett [link] and Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu [link]. It's a terribly moody record, but you'll find yourself listening to it again and again, because from the low-lit guitars to the droning violin, every breath of this album stops and starts to a beautiful melody - the kind that just falls perfectly into a musician's mind.'Whore Luck' strongly reminds me of Nirvana's 'Unplugged in New York', not that it sounds anything like it, but the vibe is totally present in these achingly beautiful songs - like the noise of rain on a car's roof. Also, earlier this week Picastro posted their new and imminent tour schedule, which includes both European and US dates - sadly they don't appear to be hitting the UK on their travels.Picastro - Car Sleep [MP3]+ Official website [link]+ Myspace [link]+ Buy [link]I wasn...

ARIA C JALALI...
2007-09-28 01:05:00
Due to me having caught a throat infection from somewhere and not really being able to leave the house, I've been doing a lot of digging around Myspace the last few days - it's sad, but very true! One of the many fruits of this labour was finding Aria C Jalali, a San Francisco based multi-instrumentalist that makes some of the quirkiest-yet-coolest songs I've heard in a while. You can tell that Aria takes a seriously bohemian approach to a lot of his song writing - the music seems to swirl and hover, beautifully providing a colourful backdrop for Aria's nonchalant, but fitting vocals. His new 4 track EP 'Postmodernism' is available to buy as both digital download and as 7" vinyl. I was particularly feeling the 2 tracks included below - the title track 'Postmodernism' is just a wonderful slant on some beautiful sound scapes and 'Oh, Neon Lovers' comes across a little on the darker side, striking up similarities with all things Handsome Furs [link].Aria C Jalali - Postmoderni...
DAN DEACON...
2007-09-28 00:57:00
Despite looking like a washed up Timmy Mallet [link] on LSD, Dan Deacon has garnered a deep seated reputation in the underground as an intense performer and classic showman. The table top full of pedals, a sine wave generator, vocoder and sweat covered casio blasting through the PA, joined by a makeshift light board with various bulbs and green skull strobe light, make his all out dance-til-you-drop performances a complete experience. But it isn't all fancy feet and bouncy beats - believe it or not Deacon is a classically trained composer with a Masters degree in electro-acoustic composition (WTF!). He's released 7 albums to date, but those self-produced recordings do not contain the vocal-based experimental pop that he has seemingly fine-tuned in his live performance. I was recently given a copy of his latest full length, 'Spiderman of the Rings' and it appears to be the first album that tries to bridge the gap between party performer and genuine composer. A mixture of his live...

The band released their debut full-length 'A Night At The Ritz' this week (September 25th) through Scratchie Records [link] (James Iha's label). After having a day to play around with the album and give it a few spins in the CD player, it's quite clear that this 5-piece aren't simply one of those bands who try to blend electro or folk or shoegaze or anything like that - they're mainly just great power pop-esque indie rock, with a hint of synth-keyboard here and there.
