YEA BIG & KID STATIC...
2007-09-21 22:38:00
Ever wonder what happened to the FUN in hip-hop? Well, Chicago tag team Yea Big and Kid Static are set to release their debut album, 'HLLLYEA' on October 23rd and after having a tiny sneak-peak of it waiting in our inbox today, we think we've found the FUN again! In their own words Yea Big & Kid Static are "down with OCD" and have created a meticulously crafted debut album of post-retro comic book hip-hop - the soundtrack for your next dance-off and the preamble to your next good times coup! Stefen Robinson a.k.a. Yea Big is a detail obsessed mad scientist of the mix, who in 2006 released his first full length CD, 'The Wind That Blows The Robot's Arms'. While Kid Static gained local recognition as the front man for the defunct instrumental hip-hop group, The Cankles, whose much lauded 'Goddamn!' dropped in 2005 along with Static?s privately issued solo debut 'Have You Seen This Man?' He's also a stunt double by trade! There are live shows sceduled around the US so do...
UNDER THE COVERS # 1...
2007-09-21 00:29:00
As many of you will be aware - we've recently moved our old blog (Happy Clap Music!) to this new fantastic site, which will now become our permanent home! We didn't make too much of a fuss during the transitional period as we wanted to carry on blogging about music, which after all is what we're good at and why we are here! However, since the change over we've been inundated with emails asking all sorts of questions about why we transferred to ECBLG. Well, to keep it short - we've managed to gather quiet a fanbase now and felt it would be more appropriate that we have a re-branding as such - one that would reflect who we were and what we're writing about in order to provide you, the reader, with a better quality and more accessible site. So in order to celebrate the move we're introducing a new feature! Once a week, throughout next month we'll be posting up some of the coolest cover songs we can find lying around. I hope you enjoy the new site and thank you all once again fo...

A-SIDES | GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS...
2007-09-20 22:43:00
The city of brotherly love?s rising new stars, The A-Sides formed at Drexel University and are currently preparing for the release of their sophomore LP, 'Silver Storms', on Vagrant Records [link]. It?s a record of poppy guitar goodness that sounds more Brit than Motownphilly with a hint of Brian Wilson's retro sheen thrown in for good measure. The new album, 'Silver Storms', will be released on September 18th, 2007.The A-Sides are currently on tour with Pinback, and then will be playing some dates with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists so make sure you check the usual places for the full tour details. The A-Sides - Cinematic [MP3]The A-Sides - Diamonds [MP3]The A-Sides - We're The Trees [MP3]+ Official website [link]+ Myspace [link]+ Buy [link]Also, Great Lake Swimmers are offering up a free 5-song live EP from their sold-out show at Toronto's Church of the Redeemer [link]. RED COLLAR | NATHAN LAWR & THE MINOTAURS...
2007-09-19 22:47:00
If the name didn't tip you, it takes about 28 seconds of 'The Hands Up' EP to know exactly who North Carolina's Red Coll ar are and what they're about: "I got my bachelor's/ Got my master's/ I got my doctorate/ Yes, I'm a real go-getter." This isn't a red collar for the working-class conservatives of America; this is the red collar of the blue-collar, progressive proletariat. This may be a red band in a red state, but their symbology is more Lenin and Marx than George W and donkeys. 'The Hands Up' EP was officially released back in February, but this winter will see the band recording a full length LP with big-time producer Brian Paulson (Wilco, Archers of Loaf, Superchunk). Also, if you like what you hear - 'The Hands Up' EP can be purchased from the bands official website! I know what you're thinking - with all the rock n' roll this week, we're spoiling you more than The Ambassador ever could with his chocolaty confectioneries [link]. True!Red Collar - Hands Up [MP...

AKRON/FAMILY...
2007-09-18 22:54:00
Out of all the emails that make it through to our busty inbox at the Light Green HQ, there are rarely few that stop us dead in our tracks - but... one such email arrived today! And I don't mind saying that Akron /Family are one of the best things to ever hit our doorstep! I know that seems an absurdly sweeping statement to generalize on, but my god is their stuff good! As far as I can see the band have accrued at least 3 albums worth of music, with the 4th on it's way this week. 'Love Is Simple' is the new edition released September 24th and the music tends to veer from gentle American country-folk to unabashed electronic noise and erupting crescendos, extended improvisations that then suddenly blur into an LSD version of a backwoods barbershop quartet ? sometimes all within the course of one song! To jump start the release of 'Love Is Simple', Akron/Family are heading out on a North American tour this very week so make sure you check the details [link].Akron/Family - Ed is a P...
ROD THOMAS...
2007-09-17 23:38:00
Rod Thom as is not your average introverted singer-songwriter who laments about loss and broken hearts. The songs by the South Wales born self made musician are some of the most joyful you heard in a long time. This is folk with a flourish, a snap and a pop, a few glances and winks in the general direction of disco. There are a whole bunch of live dates sceduled across the UK, all of which you can see at Rod's official myspace. It looks like a promising live experience from what I've read, he plays live with childhood instruments, a loop pedal, a synth and handclaps, and make music to make people dance, smile, laugh and occasionally think a little bit. Sounds good, aye?Rod Thomas - Good Coat [MP3]+ Myspace [link]+ Buy [link]

BARE KNUCKLE SOUL | HOOD HEADLINAZ...
2007-09-16 23:44:00
Bare Knuckle Soul are a collection of poets, musicians and singers who met through the Sheffield music scene in 2002. Working out of a converted cutlery works in the steel city during the long hot summers without air-con, and the cold, dark winters without heating, Bare Knuckle Soul have fought through 4 years both in and out of the studio to finally deliver their brand of raw soul born from their British, African, and Jamaican experience. Without any official release to date, the collective have already been picked up by the musical radar of the elite, gaining an underground stir with a rare 4-track demo EP of their earlier work floating around BBC Radio 1. The EP was picked up by other respected sources, resulting in 2 tracks from the EP; the conscious summer soul cut 'Just Right', and the dark, Hip-Hop lament 'Black Other' being included on 'The Electric Soul' compilation and Chris Offili and Charlie Dark?s 'Freeness' CD respectively. Performances at MTV Base Lounge along...

SHOTGUN JIMMIE...
2007-09-15 01:28:00
Thanks to Matt over at Pigeon Row [link] we've heard word that former Shotgun & Jaybird front man, Shotgun Jimmie, is releasing his highly anticipated solo album 'The Onlys' (Delorean Recordings [link]) on Tuesday, October 9th. In support of the release, Jimmie will embark on an Eastern Canadian tour this October with Baby Eagle [link] and Construction Destruction [link].A founding member of perennial underdogs Shotgun & Jaybird, Jimmie has spent the last four years co-fronting the band from Dawson City to the greener pastures of Sackville, NB. After signing to the legendary Sappy Records in 2006, the group quickly developed a devout national following with the successive releases of their EP 'There Are Days and There Are Days' and LP 'Trying To Get Somewhere'. Now bravely standing on his own for the first time since 2004?s 'The 6,000 True Stories of Love', Shotgun Jimmie presents the glowing results of a summer spent in seclusion, writing and recording in the parlo...
BRAZIL 70...
2007-09-14 01:32:00
"Brazil 70 follows Brazilian music in the aftermath of Tropicalia as the country's dictatorship entered its most oppressive phase... With the constant threat of imprisonment, artists nevertheless managed to produce radical music that, like Tropicalia before it, managed to deal with questions of identity, sexuality and society in a revolutionary manner" - Soul Jazz Records [link]. Soul Jazz Records will follow up last year's absolutely flawless 'Tropicalia': A Brazilian Revolution in Sound - which is probably my personal favorite compilation of this decade - with Brazil 70: 'After Tropicalia', a post-Tropicalia collection featuring killer Brazilian tunes all influenced by American and British underground rock music from the early 70s. I don't even know where to begin here; the record features many of the more well-known 'Tropicalia' artists (Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, Gal Costa), as well as a wealth of artists I'd never heard of, and the whole thing is nothing short of mind-blow...
KEITE YOUNG...
2007-09-13 12:45:00
Proud Texan Keite Young (pronounced Keet) has undeniably been impressing us lately with his debut LP 'The Rise & Fall Of Keite Young', which was released August 28th. I have to admit this one nearly slid under the radar for us here at Happy Clap Music, for the simple fact that - for a rowdy-ramble such as ourselves it takes an awful lot of soul to reach out and touch us, but Keite has truly gone and blown us away with this one. Keite's influences shine through loud and proud on 'The Rise & Fall Of...' and there are grains of legendary soul proportions radiating everything from Prince to Ben Harper here - truly eclectic and truly soulful. This album is a definite modern soul classic and should not by any means be over looked! If you do happen to be Stateside during the month of September then check out Keite's official website - there's a couple of dates in Dallas and Fort Worth.Keite Young - If We Were Alone [MP3]Keite Young - My Change [MP3]+ Official website [link]+...
