2007-12-02 20:31:00
Well its officially December, I guess the festive season starts here and its time for me to now start worrying about putting up trees and panicing over gifts I haven't quite managed to buy for people yet! THE BOXER REBELLION: FREE DOWNLOAD...
2007-11-27 19:26:00
Moody post-modernists, The Boxer Rebellion , are showcasing their hugely awaited follow up to their acclaimed 2005 debut, 'Exits', by giving away a free track over at their MySpace [here].The Boxer Rebellion shot to British fame in June 2003, after funding and releasing their own limited edition self-titled EP, The Boxers bolstered their way onto Glastonbury's New Bands tent, and were soon snapped up by Alan McGees Poptones label. They spent months in the studio rehearsing and writing before front man, Nicholson became floored by stomach cramps.Riders were swapped for saline drips as Nathan left behind the sweaty British tour circuit for a hospital bed and a twelve hour operation to remove a life-threatening growth from his stomach. The result was the cancellation of tours with Razorlight and The Killers, among others.Putting the past aside, the band are on the cusp of releasing their new album straight off the back of touring with Editors sometime in early 2008.

BABYSHAMBLES MAN QUITS...
2007-11-26 22:31:00
Babyshambles guitarist Patrick Walden has walked out on the Pete Doherty-led band ahead of their UK tour. The guitarist, who previously worked as a session musician for James Blunt, quit the 'Down In Albion' band just hours before their tour was about to commence in Manchester this weekend. Patrick, who had previously left the band in 2005 but returned in 2006, co-wrote top ten hit 'Fuck Forever' and live favourite '32nd Of December', among others, with Pete Doherty."He came up to Manchester on the tour bus with us, he was going to come out and play on a couple of songs, but there were complications and he had to go home. Personally, I just found it all a bit strange," said replacement guitarist Mick Whitnall - who has filled in for Walden before. "It was a very amicable decision, he just didn't want to do it in the end. He's got other projects on the go and I wish him well. There's no animosity there, none at all."MP3 : Babyshambles - Fuck Forever

REVIEWED: 'THIS GUN IS NOT A GUN' - CHRIS T-T...
2007-11-25 20:11:00
Newly signed to Xtra Mile Recordings, Chris T-T releases the first fruits from his forthcoming 5th album, 'Capital', which will see the light of day in Feb 2008.It would be easy to confuse Chris T-T with the spaced-out dude that used to play his battered acoustic (stringed with three E-strings) in the cramped corner of the local urban coffeehouse. His lyrics are political and generally phrased in the imperative, and the songs, on first appraisal, may seem a little too straight-forward to be taken seriously. But to align Chris T-T with that unwashed caffeine addict would be wrong ? 'This Gun Is Not A Gun' is refreshing, earnest, earthy and is as pretty as an EP gets now-a-days. 'This Gun Is Not A Gun' is not a million miles away from fellow Xtra Mile cohort Frank Turner's current repertoire or even that of another former hardcore band frontman Dave House. Falling quite distinctly into the vociferous protest singer/songwriter vein that Billy Bragg made all his own two decades a...

GARY LIGHTBODY RECORDS SOLO MATERIAL...
2007-11-25 17:07:00
Snow Patrol's frontman Gary Lightbody has been busy recording solo music, with a whole new direction to his previous material. The news came to fruition when Steve Bays of Hot Hot Heat - the Canadian band who supported Snow Patrol on their recent American tour - inadvertedly revealed all in an interview with the BBC stating, "[Lightbody] is working on a project in his home studio, he was talking to me about a bunch of stuff that doesn?t sound like Snow Patrol at all, I think he is just being creative and he is not thinking about it as a Snow Patrol project.?And it seems Lightbody's enthusiasm for the project is infectious with Bays adding, "When you see it in his eyes and see how excited he is, it inspires you.?But with Lightbody branching further into the arena of solo experimentation - producing 'Just Say Yes' for Nicole Scherzinger's debut album 'Her Name Is Nicole' (released January 29th) - fans have nothing to worry about yet with no indication this may affect the band.M...

ONES TO WATCH: DAVE GREEN...
2007-11-22 01:04:00
Dave Green has been around - and it shows. At only 22, this solo artist from Manchester has not only a creative maturity well beyond his years, but strength of voice that transcends both era and classification. 'The People' was Dave?s first band, at age 14, with whom he cut a CD and subsequently signed on with Canadian music manager Daniel Brookes. By 17, he signed on with another of 'Brookes' bands - 'Roller', Dave undertook two tours of the United States and Canada opening for 54-40 and Danny Michel. In 2004 Dave started a solo career and undertook 6 months of writing and recording in Canada with such industry notables as Rich Beddoe (Finger Eleven), Vincent Sciara and Ken Corke (Skye Sweetnam). Since having successfully opened support shows with the likes of The Damned, We Start Fires, The Futureheads and Ali Love, Dave has been in the studio with producer John Kettle (Marble Index, Moco), where he focused on developing a new sound and worked on and completed his full-lengt...

THE MID-WEEK DANCE OFF: HAIRY METAL MONSTERS...
2007-11-21 01:32:00
I know what you're thinking! Oh shit! He's gone too far this time, posting 80s hair-metal songs on what's usually a credible music blog! Well, in my defense I recently got round to watching the Andy Samberg movie, 'Hot Rod', which is ram packed full of yummy-80s-hair-metal, so I thought why not - it's a hilarious movie and I thought we could do with some fun this week! After all, it's the mid-week dance off, a chance for all us crazy kids to don our headbands, dance around like fools and blow off some steam under the pretense that the weekend is nearly here. Now grab your air guitar, get up off that chair and show me them devil horns! RADIOHEAD TOUR UPDATE...
2007-11-21 00:24:00
Radiohead are planning to take their latest album 'In Rainbows' on the road next year with tours set for the US and UK, and a possible slot at Glasto 2008. In an interview with BBC 6Music [here] yesterday (November 19th) lead guitarist Ed O'Brien revealed, "We'll probably go out in May and head out for the summer, so we'll be around here June and July. America first."As for rumours that Radiohead may well be one of the bands in line to headline Glastonbury 2008 O' Brien added, "Everything's on the agenda. We're finalising dates at the moment so we will see if they [Glastonbury] want us, which we don't know yet." Before clarifying "None of this is confirmed, it's all in the air." And turning next to the idea to allow fans to chose the price they would pay for the digital version of their latest album 'In Rainbows' - which has come under scrutiny from a multitude of other artists - frontman Thom Yorke revealed it was something he'd already considered for his own solo reco...

2007-11-17 01:50:00
Can we get some Wino remixes? I said Yes! Yes! Yes! I was kind of holding this post back, but in light of this week's disastrous start to her UK tour [here] and loosing her dear ol' tour manager [here], I may as well go ahead and put the troubled party girl under the spotlight and in turn head straight into the weekend by completing what has unintentionally become a trilogy of Wino posts. Also visit [here] if you haven't already seen the "possible" onstage drug incident - I think its pretty darn obvious what shes doing, but now let that be an end to the matter before she comes after us too! MY BLOODY VALENTINE ARE ON THE MOVE...
2007-11-16 18:40:00
Sixteen years after their last London show My Bloody Valentin e have finally confirmed dates for their comeback tour in summer 2008. Capping off what seems to be the 'year of the comeback' comes the exciting news that the legendary My Bloody Valentine are hitting UK venues next June. The Irish foursome - who inspired the 'shoegazing movement' of the 1980's with their eyes to the floor motionless performances - kick-start their long awaited jaunt at London's Roundhouse on June 20th, 2008. The iconic band - who haven't performed live in the UK since 1991, the year their seminal album 'Loveless' was released - will continue on to Manchester (June 28th), before finishing up in Glasgow (July 2nd). The tour is set to support the release of their as yet untitled third album - which frontman Kevin Shields assured fans would hold true to the original My Bloody Valentine sound (which influenced the likes of Primal Scream, Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins), adding that the new albu...

WINEHOUSE TOUR MANAGER QUITS...
2007-11-16 14:24:00
Things just seem to be going from the bad to the truely aweful as Amy Winehouse 's shocking week continues with reports that her long-suffering tour manager has quit amid concerns that he may have passively inhaled heroin on the tour bus. Thom Stone is reported to have quit after a doctor confirmed his fears that simply being in the presence of Winehouse and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil was affecting his health. A source told the Sun [here]: "He was constantly bailing her out. He was watching them get off their heads on drugs and wondering whether Amy was even going to get up on stage. It was a nightmare job."Among Stone's tasks this week were coping with the aftermath of Fielder-Civil being carted off to jail, Amy worrying her family enough for them to call her an ambulance and her turning on fans at a gig in Birmingham [here] on Wednesday calling them "mugs" and "cunts". He has yet to issue a public statement. MP3 : Amy Winehouse - Love is a Losing Game

ONES TO WATCH: KORIA KITTEN RIOT...
2007-11-16 03:28:00
I logged into my MySpace account last night and was greeted with some incredibly positive news and a wonderful musical surprise! A good friend of mine has recently started to record some of his solo work and Koria Kitten Riot is the adopted moniker under which he is now doing so.Hailing from Turku, Finland, vocalist Antti Reikko has taken the time outside of his main band, Johnny Superhero [here], to record some of the extra songs hes had floating around - and boy are they good. There are two tracks up for download over at the MySpace [here], 'The Wedding Waltz', a beautiful tale about the arrival of love, which carries dark undertones as guitars twist and clash in an combustive and emotive blast. The second is 'Golden', a gentle arpeggio led bundle of mellow down-and-out happiness. I've managed to converse with Koria Kitten Riot and apparently there are more songs on route soon - watch this space! Both Johnny Superhero albums can be downloaded from the official website [here].MP...

Here we are again - Friday!!! Time for some more cover songs to set you up for the weekend. This week's a good bunch, we've got Josh T Peterson freaking-up the Hank Williams classic 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Die', Radiohead's recent version of New Order's 'Ceremony' and Daniel Smith/Sufjan Stevens' cover of Daniel Johnston's 'Worried Shoes', which is a mad favourite of mine. Also on the list is Chromatics with Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill', Future Kings Of Spain with Janet Jackson's 'Lets Wait A While', which really gets mind-blowing about half way through, and most importantly don't miss The Freefall hitting it with an acoustic version of The Killers' 'Mr Brightside'.Most noteably though, don't miss Grizzly Bear's cover of The Crystals' 'He Hit Me' and Thoughtless Jolly's rendition of Gym Class Heroes' 'Cupid's Chokehold' - both are pure gold! Please keep the feedback coming, its always nice to know what you think! VIDEO 4 PACK: THE BROKEN FAMILY BAND...
2007-11-15 16:46:00
With their new single 'Leaps' entering the official British indie chart at number 14 this week, I thought it would be nice to champion The Broken Family Band for what they are - one of this countries most under appreciated bands (ever!). They've been going since circa 2002 to my knowledge, when they released 'The King Will Build A Disco' EP. Since then there has been may releases including 2006's awesome 'Balls' album, which is a must have! So, in light of this, today we honour The Broken Family Band with our video 4 pack, starting with their new single 'Leaps' and ending with the short, but hilarious movie 'At Home With The Broken Family Band' - lets wrestle! You can also visit their MySpace [here]. FANS JEER AMY'S TALES OF WOE AS TOUR BEGINS...
2007-11-15 15:35:00
The reviews are in for Amy Winehouse's latest UK tour, which kicked off last night in Birmingham, and the consensus is not good."Amy Winehouse was booed and jeered by hundreds of fans after ranting on stage about her husband in jail," reports the Daily Mail [here].An audience less than sympathetic to Winehouse's personal problems was less than impressed when the singer, "stumbled into the venue half an hour late, slurred her words, walked into a guitar stand and dropped her microphone at the opening date of her British tour".Earlier that day, Winehouse had visited her husband for the first time since he was arrested for perverting the course of justice. Despite this no doubt traumatic visit, the singer was remarkably feisty in her response to the boos and jeers."Following jeers from the crowd, she ranted: 'Let me tell you something. First of all, if you're booing, you're a mug for buying a ticket.'"(Well it's difficult to argue with that.)"Second, to all those booing, just wa...

Sennen are a Norwich based five-piece that have had little press since their creation circa 2005, but that seems to be changing now thanks to a support slot with iLiKETRAiNS for the October leg of their UK tour and the release of their latest single 'Blackout'.The band always seem to be not too far away from the big-boys, having toured with Editors and Explosions in the Sky, they strike me as a 'something' waiting to happen, which I'm pretty sure will be soon after now having recorded an XFM session to be aired tomorrow night between 10pm-1am - there will be an interview with the band as well - tune in on 104.9FM in London, on digital radio or via the XFM website [here].Sennen also have their own headline dates planned for early 2008, when they will release their second album, 'Where The Light Gets in'. THE MID-WEEK DANCE OFF: ROCK YOURSELF STEADY...
2007-11-14 17:45:00
There are two reasons for this post. Firstly, Wednesdays are crap! Things are usually quiet come mid-week, no doubt people like me are feeling the burn from their shitty day jobs. So from now on, every Wednesday I'm going to issue the midweek dance off! I'll try to cover many different genres and styles in an attempt to bring you a little musical-mixtape joy where you can feel free to dance your ass off and pretend that the weekend has come early! The Second reason for this post is - in an attempt to avoid any acknowledgement of the winter season I'm cranking up the reggae this week - who knows maybe I'll trick my brain into feeling the warm Jamaican sunshine at some point! Hence why we're kicking this thing off with some rock steady beats! I've always had a soft spot for the old dub/roots tunes of days gone by, they paint some great images of culture, influence, history and a time of social change (especially in Great Britain!).So on that note; turn up the speakers, get up off...

NEW SONS & DAUGHTERS...
2007-11-14 15:47:00
'Gilt Complex' is the brand new single from Scotts 4-piece Sons & Daughters , and the first to be lifted from third album 'This Gift'. 'Gilt Complex' was released on October 29th 2007 on 7" vinyl and digital download through Domino Records [here]. It's compelling arrangement is the product of the bands own characteristic intensity and the combative approach of the albums famously uncompromising producer Bernard Butler. It is an ambitious return to the fray, full of pounding rhythm and riveting virtuoso guitar, hand claps and harmony, grasping chorus' and gripping vocals, the work of a band eclipsing its own distinct and critically acclaimed reputation. The album races from the rasping 'Gilt Complex' to the Edwyn Collins strut of 'The Nest', hits driving garage rock on 'Rebel With The Ghost' via 60s girl-group stomps 'Darling' and 'Flags', and all along hints at the bands ability to conjure up atmospheres of disturbing unease, most notably on 'Iodine' and the de...

He's a tiny laptop machine from Bristol that loves to sing cover versions of 80s and 90s classics, there is even an album available - bless him! AN EVENING PRESENTED BY THE RAKES @ SEONE, LONDON...

An Evening Presented By The Rakes was the mega-bash that descended on the SeOne nightclub in London last Friday. I was suposed to be in attendance, but an evil chest infection and lack of cash prevented me (makes a sad face). The myriad arches and massive line-ups may have been every rocker?s worst orienteering nightmare, but the stellar live acts, from the gloomy hosts themselves to the shouty girl group We Start Fires, would have made it worth the expedition. For indie-electro mash-up lovers, they?d got it all covered with an Adventures in the Beetroot Field-hosted room, where Crispin Dior, Casper C, Filthy Dukes and even Terry Hall (from The Specials!) kept limbs flailing! I'm really pissed off that I couldn't go, but below are some of the highlights. The Ghost FrequencyWe Start FiresThe Rakes

It's only been a few days since the much talked of Radiohead webcasts [here], but the aftershocks have already begun. Richard Jankovich (aka Pocket) has worked his magic and created an awesomely emotive remix of Radiohead's rendition of Bjork's 'Unravel'!Pocket is no stranger to the world of indie-remixes, his past adventures have always been recommendable, but currently he's working on his new stuff, which leans less towards the art of remix and more in the direction of original compositions - from what I've been reading, its looking promising. BEST OF BRITISH...
2007-11-12 13:58:00
Its been a while now since I did the last 'Best of British ' write up so jump in your imaginary right-hand-drive car, get on the left side of the road and lets take a wonder around a few of England's cities to see who it is we should be watching out for.LONDON: There's obviously always so much to talk about when it comes to the capital and it's music scene, but Elvin [here] is really worth looking out for. Their soulful slant on songwriting and bouncy piano melodies make it all really catchy and infectious - real foot tapping stuff going down in South London with this band. Also rocking my playlist is the brother/sister combo that is The Cordelier Club [here]. Its more piano bouncing fun (must be a phase I'm going through!), but the vocals and songwriting carry a Kate Bush type vibe that seems to sneak up on you when you least expect it. Lastly, check out A.Human [here], they're a Killers-esqe electro-indie band, albeit a lot darker. They've got a limited edition 10" single c...
