Forming a band
2007-09-10 12:29:00
My younger brother recently told me he was going to start a band. He says he’s not bothered about playing live to anyone but im sure that will change once his band are sounding good. Its hard not to show off what you’ve done after all the practise. It got me thinking about how hard/easy it is to find band mates who are on the same wave length and who can actually play (not that thats actually very important, because its not). So, heres my top tips for forming a band, im not going to give you any on how to keep one together as thats another job entirely. 1) Its probably a good idea to like at least one of the same bands but if you share exactly the same influences this can often lead to a copy cat band. 2) Make sure you all know what you want to get out of it ie, to create great music, playing the local pub, stadium gigs, stripper filled parties. 3)Talk shit to anyone within earshot while drunk at a party. A great way to meet prospective band members. 4)Put up ads, reply...

Been thinking lately about the genre of music we are (rock we be) and that its a dying breed. It’s been over the last few months that i’ve been keeping an eye on the gigs listings for King Tuts (which i love playing at) for a good band to support thats at least in the same style as us. Don’t get me wrong however, there are good bands out there. I’ve seen one band that was suitable which was ‘hell is for heroes’ if you’re interested. One band in 6 months!!! Everything else has been either a bit too indie or a bit too metal, the middle ground between the two seems to have dissapeared. Where as there used to be bands like the ‘Smashing Pumpkins’, ‘Rage against the machine’, ‘Manic street preachers’, and all of my beloved Grunge bands now we get treated to the likes of muse and biffy clyro which frankly don’t do it for me. Now, i know you’re thinking i just got it wrong, pumpkins, rage and the ma...

Went to see interpol in Edinburgh last night and for some reason i was absolutely bored rigid. They were competent enough and i love their stuff (well, not the new album, ite very samey) but two things stood out. As usual with gigs any bigger than a few hundred people the sound engineer seemed to have a bass drum fetish, in fact just a general love for bass as the guitar and vocals weren’t very loud. Then there was the performance, or lack of it. I dont need bands to be talking to the crowd or even jumping around but there was such a lack of anything that could remotely resemble charisma. With songs as good as theirs its a real talent to be able to bore someone with them. Sorry, interpol fans. As for ourselves, we’re practising tonight, im going to record some video and upload it to the ytube and the videos page. Laters, Calum

Honcho Records
2007-08-20 23:34:00
Honcho Records from Stornoway are including our song ‘tightly’ on their latest compilation of Lewis bands. They released one a few years ago (with our song ‘frantic’ on it) called ‘Local man ruins everything’ which was pretty great. I’ll let you know where you can get your copy when it’s available. This means however that ...
