We’ve signed up to a site called sellaband.com. The premise of it is that a band signs up and uploads some music. Then visitors to the site have a listen and if they like what they hear they become a believer. Once a band has 5000 believers the site gives the band £50, 000 to ...

New Music - Ambient

I’ve got some new music from a couple bands that are on myspace that i’d like to heartily recommend. I’ve mainly found them through friend requests but now and then from other folk. If you’re a fan of Sigur Ros or Mogwai then there’s a good chance you might like The american ...

I went to see Nada Surf in the Garage on Saturday night. This was my third time seeing them and they were absolutely fantastic. I cant recommend this band enough. Big highlight for me was “Killians Red” and “These Bones” which shows that their new music is just as good as their old stuff. ...

Honcho records from Stornoway have just released their latest collection of Western Isles music called “No Bad Yourself”. It features 26 different bands and artists including ourselves over 2 CD’s. It’s the follow up to previous island collections “how much more black can it be” and “local man ruins everything”. Theres a lot ...
Unsigned
2007-11-10 14:33:00
There’s this programme on Sat/Sun called unsigned bands something, not sure what its called but it’s probably got a mobile phone name crammed into the title. The premise of it is x-factor for bands. So you all know the drill, bands enter their songs, go through auditions and the winner gets showered in riches. They’ve got the usual industry jury who act as a buffer for the public making sure we dont get to buy  anything that’s not good enough for us.  The emphasis on the show is that these bands are unsigned but one of them will be given the prize of a record contract.  But isn’t the internet giving bands/ artist the freedom to release their music online to a mass audience. Well, yes and no. Yes but artists aren’t considered such until they’re signed to a label, (which by the way can be some guy mailing cd’s from his bedroom) and No because the record companies are trying their damndest to keep it that way. They know that as long a...

Mark Kozelek
2007-11-01 23:55:00
Went to see Mark Kozelek (Red house painters & Sun kil moon) last night in Oran Mor and he was fabublous. I’ve got a red house painters retrospective album which I bought after hearing it being played in Brunswick cellars (pub in Glasgow) on a friday afternoon waiting for my girlfriend. It was something that I loved instantly, so much so that I even braved talking to the “too cool for school” barmaid to find out what it was. So anyway, i’ve got this album but I’ve never got around to getting any of his other stuff but I figured i’d hear at least one of the songs I knew. I didn’t, and it was still one of the best concerts i’ve been to. He came in wearing one of those scream masks as it was Halloween.  I Assumed he’d take it off after a while but he kept it on for most of the show. It was surreal seeing and hearing this guy in fancy dress playing these beautiful songs.  A couple of the crowd were not impressed and kept s...

2007-10-27 02:39:00
After saying it for months we finally started recording tonight for what will become our second album of songs. We recorded drums and some of the guitar for four songs, solitaire, tug of war, waiting and an untitled number. Keep you posted as to when they ‘re ready for some ear attention.

The best things are free, add music to that
2007-10-18 00:43:00
So Radiohead have released their new album, and theres a twist. You can go to their site and download, then pay however much you want for it, even a big fat zero. It’s been a topic that’s interested me for a long time. How much should we pay for music? You can base it on how much it costs to produce the music which is silly money. I was recording at the weekend with my other band Spook Club. For two songs it took 12 whole hours at something like £25 an hour (which is cheap by the way compared to a studio I know that charges £50). So that’s £300 for just the recording, not including mixing or mastering, so even in the digital age if we forego the cd duplication and artwork it’s still a hefty whack. Based on this if a person wants to listen to an album of music they should pay over a grand for it but that would be a tad insane. A tenner for an album really doesn’t seem that bad now does it? This never used to be a problem but now with the old int...

We just set up a page on the xfm uploaded site. It’s billed as a way to help unsigned artists get heard. However I think it’s really just a way to get more people to listen to the station.  My case? The prize. The prize is to get your song played on the radio, actually, no. Scrub that, the prize is having your song added to their weekly podcast.  Shouldn’t the radio just play songs that they like the sound of instead of having us compete against each other like rabid dogs.  The sheer amount of bands on there means that when artists are selected for their weekly competition the station gets those bands and their friends to listen in  all week which would add up to quite a few peeps. So no, i don’t see any real merit in it (not to take away from ‘all about the dots’ win on it last week) but i suppose it can’t hurt.  So after all that, if you want to have a look at us on there, heres the link. http://www.xfmuploaded.co.uk/yourscarecro w/

I was listening to the album called throwing copper by Live yesterday. Its one of those albums that makes me think, aw crap, ive not recorded anything half as good as that. But i think it’s a great thing to have music of a quality that you feel is beyond your ability to match. It keeps you trying to make better music. So here’s my top ten albums that i aspire to , and that make me feel a bit useless. 10) Everclear - Sparkle and Fade 9) Distillers - Coral Fang Pearl Jam - Vitalogy 7) Sigur Ros - Takk 6) Counting Crows - August and Everything After 5)The Tragically Hip - In Between Evolution To be fair this could be any of their albums, they’re that good. 4)Tool - Vicarious.
