R. Kelly Trial: What Has Prosecution Proved About Sex Tape -- And Should Ke

As prosecution rests its case, many observers feel the singer may be convicted.By Jennifer Vineyard Artist rendering of R. Kelly and witness Lisa Van Allen in Chicago Criminal Court Monday Photo: L.D. Chukman/ AP Images CHICAGO — After seven days of testimony from 22 witnesses, the prosecution rests, marking the halfway point of R. Kelly's child-pornography trial. Did the state make a compelling case to convict the R&B singer of making a sex tape with an underage girl? Based on the evidence presented thus far and the defense's limited success at refuting it, many observers of the trial feel that he may well be convicted. Will the defense be able to recover, or have they already raised enough doubt for an acquittal? Here's what has happened so far, and what we can expect next: Is R. Kelly the man on the tape? The prosecution was better at proving where more than who: They established that the tape was shot at Kelly's home, which indirectly identifies the man as ...

Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III Preview: Does The Year's Most
2008-06-03 07:14:00
Tracks from forthcoming LP, due June 10, have leaked onto the Net.By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images We can all breathe a sigh of relief. Lil Wayne has teased us for a couple of years, but now the gates on his highly guarded project are opening. Tha Carter III is really coming out, and we definitely won't be talking "grand opening, grand closing" on June 10. Despite his album leaking and the music industry suffering from an overall decline in sales, some experts are expecting Wayne to sell a million in his first week. It's easily the most anticipated hip-hop LP since 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' five years ago. Weezy has earned every last accolade (including a space on our latest "Hottest MCs in the Game" list). It's not catching the vapors if you talk highly of someone who's really that great — great, not good. During the last three years, Wayne has grown to be the MC who challenges his listeners the most. He's been unorthodox in...

Smith shows some love to Michael Bay and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson amid celeb traffic jam.By Shawn Adler Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt share some love on the MTV Movie Awards gold carpet Sunday Photo: MTV News The photographers were ready, the press lined up, the fears of disaster averted. In many respects, the red carpet at the 17th annual MTV Movie Awards was a normal experience as these things go. But then, this was a gold carpet — and when MTV throws a party, even the biggest stars in the world have to watch their backs. Literally. "I was just watching 'Bad Boys 2' with my son, and I told him you can't open a movie better. That's the best movie opening ever!" Will Smith excitedly hollered at "Transformers" director Michael Bay when they bumped into each other on the gold carpet. "We need 'Bad Boys 3'!" Smith bumping into Bay was hardly the only serendipitous off-camera moment caught by MTV staffers on the carpet. (Check out the full gold-carpet report i...

R. Kelly Trial: 'Threesome' Woman Testifies She Had Three Sexual Encounters
2008-06-02 14:08:00
Lisa Van Allen also claims Kelly paid her to return videotape of one encounter.By Jennifer Vineyard R. Kelly (file) Photo: Scott Olson/ Getty Images CHICAGO — "I didn't want to do it!" Breaking down in tears, Lisa Van Allen repeated the phrase three times — the first time because Sam Adam Sr., R. Kelly's defense attorney, said he couldn't hear it, the second and third because the judge and the prosecution gently asked her to say it again for Adam's benefit. Van Allen had been describing what she claimed was her second videotaped sexual encounter with Kelly and the allegedly underage girl who appears in the video at the center of the trial. Van Allen, who had been given immunity from prosecution on both a state and federal level, testified that this particular encounter was cut short because she began crying, claiming the singer then told her it made the footage useless: "He couldn't watch that, he couldn't do anything with that." Van Allen claimed that s...

The Queens icon has his priorities in order. He calls himself the greatest of all time but will be quick to tell you that his 24 years as a hip-hop star have been a huge blessing. He'll be very frank when speaking about how some of his music may have suffered through the years because he was focused on setting himself up in Hollywood. But can you really blame somebody for trying to get some of that long-range money? He's paused all his acting over the past couple of years to rededicate himself to his rap art and recorded a few albums worth of material for his Exit 13 LP (due in July). He also just finished a mixtape with DJ Kay Slay called Return of the G.O.A.T. "Me and Slay was just talki...

But once the show ended, and the sun went down, Hollywood's biggest names made sure the evening was just getting started. "I'm really a man of the people," grinned "Office" star Rainn Wilson, surveying the scene. "I'll meet the fans, have a hamburger. Then I'll shoot heroin into my eye and pass out in my own vomit. Let's get this party started!" (Check out what went down backstage and what you didn't see on the gold carpet!) Bo Diddley, Rock And Roll Pioneer, Dead At 79

The great guitarist invented one of rock's most distinctive rhythms.By Kurt Loder Bo Diddley in 1970 Photo: Hulton Archive/Getty Images Rock -and-roll pioneer Bo Diddley died early Monday morning (June 2), of heart failure, at his home in Archer, Florida. He was 79 years old. Diddley's given name was Ellas McDaniel. He was born in Mississippi but moved as a child to Chicago, where he first learned to play the violin (an instrument to which he returned on "The Clock Strikes Twelve," the B-side of 1959's "Say Man," one of his biggest hits). It was as a guitarist, though, that he began working on the streets of the South Side, and later made his most important contribution to rock music with the pummeling "Bo Diddley beat." This instantly recognizable rhythm figure, drenched in tremolo, was featured on the 1955 single "Bo Diddley," his first release on Chicago's Checker Records. (Checker was a subsidiary of Chess, which helped launch the rock-and-roll era that same year w...

Surprise guests Wu-Tang Clan, LL Cool J, Shawty Lo, Rick Ross and others take the stage.By Shaheem Reid Kanye West performs at the Hot 97 Summer Jam on Sunday Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — Fans living in the New York tristate area might as well swallow that sour pill and face facts. We probably will never see a Summer Jam concert with Jay-Z and 50 Cent both on the bill. 50 Cent is banned from Giants Stadium due to that infamous, onstage chair- (or shall we say chair-aaaairs?) throwing incident with Bang 'Em Smurf and some rivals from his neighborhood a few years back. Other than a brief cameo during Kanye West's set several years ago, Young Hov hasn't performed at SJ since he brought Michael Jackson out and dissed Nas and Mobb Deep way back in 2001. That void is always going to be felt. You could hear it last night, as 40,000-plus were yelling "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa" in unison when one of the stations threw on ...

Adam Sandler takes the cake (and the Generation Award) with off-key ode ... to himself.By Gil Kaufman Johnny Depp at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Getty Images/ Kevin Winter It was a night of big stars (Tom Cruise), big winners (Will Smith, Johnny Depp), big music numbers (Coldplay, Pussycat Dolls) and big, tongue-in-cheek displays of ego. The stars who big-upped themselves at the 17th annual MTV Movie Awards Sunday night were kidding, although Robert Downey Jr. just might have been serious — have you seen the box-office figures for "Iron Man"? At press time, the blaze had been contained, according to CNN. The Gibson Amphitheatre — the site of Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards — is also located on Universal Studios, but it was not affected by the flames, and a spokesperson for the network said Sunday morning that the show would go on as planned. Jack Black Busts Martial-Arts Moves At Fans' Request After 'Kung Fu Panda'

'I did not live with the pandas. ... I just grew out my beard,' Black says of his preparation for the film.By Shawn Adler Jack Black Photo: MTV News "You want me to do some kung fu?" Jack Black teased an excited audience member, who had stepped up to the mic looking for some real moves. "OK, just a taste." The crowd came for a taste but wound up getting the full-course meal, complete with a kicking (and punching and twirling and jumping) dessert, as MTV's Sneak Peek Week continued with a screening of Black's "Kung Fu Panda " on Friday night at the Paramount Studios Lot. The animated story of a panda waiter who winds up a master fighter was followed immediately after by a Q&A with Black himself. "Important note," he added, sitting down after his demonstration and picking up his personal items from the table. "If someone's gonna fight you, remember to take out your wallet!" Black's hands may be "fast as lightning" (when the heck did he take out his wallet?) but they w...

'I haven't done stand-up in, like, 10 years,' Sandler confesses about upcoming flick, which co-stars Seth Rogen.By Shawn Adler Adam Sandler at the "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" junket on Saturday Photo: MTV News He's one of the brightest bulbs in the comedy firmament, but if you miss a punch line in the newest Judd Apatow film, the still-untitled "Adam Sandler Project," don't worry, co-star Seth Rogen told MTV News: There will be a lot more to come. No, we seriously mean a lot. "[The plot will center on] stand-up comedians," Rogen revealed at Friday's screening of "Pineapple Express," where he was on hand to close out MTV's first-ever Sneak Peek Week. Apatow, Sandler, Rogen and Leslie Mann in a comedy club? It's a setup Rogen called "hilarious by default." So what's not to like? "I've got to write an act again. It's been a long time. I haven't done stand-up in, like, 10 years. Even more," Sandler said. "That's why I want to kill Judd Apatow right now. I wa...

Chris Martin also tried his hand at PCD's 'Don't Cha' while prepping for Sunday's big show.By James Montgomery Coldplay 's Chris Martin Photo: John Shearer/Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — You've got to envy the Nick Nolte placard. Not only does it have one of the best seats in the house — right next to Heidi Montag, directly in front of the Pussycat Dolls — but on Saturday (May 31), that simple piece of poster board also got an up-close-and-personal view of performances by both PCD and Coldplay, as the acts rehearsed (and rehearsed ... and rehearsed) their sets for Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards. On Saturday, the Gibson Amphitheatre was a constant whir of stagehands, producers, Steadicam operators, talent wranglers, construction workers, seat fillers and just about anyone you could imagine that would have anything to do with the pulling off of a live awards show. Plus, there was a pair of acts that, combined, have sold more than 13 mill...

Seth Rogen, James Franco Discuss Possible 'Pineapple Express' Sequel, Head

An amused Rogen recalls Franco's need for stitches and enlisting Huey Lewis to record film's theme song.By Larry Carroll Seth Rogen Photo: MTV News They did it with "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." They did it with "Superbad" and "Knocked Up" as well. Now, the studio behind "Pineapple Express" is so convinced that they have the next great Judd Apatow comedy on their hands, that they've been breaking typical Hollywood sneak-preview rules and showing it to critics several months before its release. So when MTV asked to include the film in its Sneak Peek Week festivities, stars Seth Rogen and James Franco were all too eager to unveil the stoner flick to a few hundred lucky new buds. "I dunno, I think you're the Chong," Rogen teased Franco when a fan at Hollywood's Arclight Cinemas asked them how they compared to a beloved '70s duo who similarly enjoyed altering their minds. "Oh yeah," Franco agreed. "I think I'm the Chong." Although the world won't be able to ride "Express...

The Pussycat Dolls — a five-piece now, since the departure of Carmit Bachar back in March — are bumping, grinding and sweating with a shocking level of precision and professionalism. They're putting the finishing touches on their performance for Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards , a shimmying, gyrating showstopper that's designed to both drop jaws and promote "When I Grow Up," the first single from their upcoming new album (due later this year). There are many reasons for this, none bigger than the fact that the average suite is basically an unending bonanza of totally amazing, completely free stuff (everything from diamond watches to espresso machines to socks), staffed by a bevy of good looking men and women who want nothing more than to give you said free stuff. And, of course, since you're a celebrity, you don't really need any of it — but hey, free stuff! And at really big events — like, say, Sunday's MTV Movie...
