Our panel of professional bloggers and superfans weigh in on the David/David finale and the season's hits and messes. The MTV News "American Idol " roundtable Photo: MTV News The end is near, "Idol" fans and detractors. We are quickly approaching the hour when someone named David will take the stage for the last time to perform his committee-chosen first single, struggling through the tears and confetti. But first, MTV's "American Idol" expert Jim Cantiello decided to take a look back, and he invited some fellow superfans to weigh in on the rule changes, flagging ratings, producer manipulations, judges' flubs and professional contestants that have characterized season seven. Seated at this illustrious roundtable were: EW.com's Michael Slezak, who, in addition to writing popular episode recaps and blog entries, hosts the Web show "Idolatry," where he and his colleagues illustrate their "Idol" arguments with clips from old Japanese monster movies and "Wonder Woman"...

Papoose Dismisses 'Ridiculous' Remy Ma Escape-Plot Rumors, Promises Appeal

'Everybody knows if it was a felony, I would have been arrested,' rapper says of skeleton key confiscated by corrections officer.By Shaheem Reid Papoose Photo: Ray Tamarra With thoughts of injustice flowing through his mind, Papoose erupted in anger in a New York courtroom Tuesday after hearing that his fiancee, Remy Ma , had been sentenced to eight years in prison. "I got a little bit aggravated. I think anybody would," Pap, wearing a wedding band on his ring finger, said in New York's Platinum Studios Wednesday. "To see a female get persecuted like that for something they didn't do. ... Then, on the other hand, you see Sean Bell get murdered by police and they just walk out the courtroom. A crime they admitted they did. Then somebody that's suspected of a crime goes to jail and gets sentenced to eight years. These police gun a man down and murder him. In the same city a mother gets snatched away from her child. It's aggravating." Remy Ma (born Reminisce Smith) was ...

Inside 'American Idol' Results Show: David Archuleta's Dad Takes Control Fr

Fans show Michael Johns some love; judges forget a show is going on, at Wednesday's 'Idol' taping.By Katie Byrne Syesha Mercado, David Archuleta and David Cook perform on "American Idol " Wednesday LOS ANGELES — A couple of key things one learns at an "American Idol" taping: The "big stage" is way smaller than it looks on TV, and the typically tortoise-paced results show goes by way faster. You also see a lot more than the wildly tracking cameras could ever catch, so MTV News hit up Wednesday's show to be your eyes and ears behind the scenes. Before the broadcast began, the crowd (complete with a mosh pit of gussied-up local high-schoolers) went crazy for the mostly "Idol"-related celebs who made their way into the studio, including season-six finalist Chris Richardson and this year's top 12. The night's biggest preshow applause was reserved for the guy whose early elimination was this season's biggest shocker: Michael Johns. While his fellow finalists were we...

Andre 3000 has had more impact in about 40 bars this year than many peers can boast on their entire albums.By Shaheem Reid Andre 3000 Photo: MTV News In summer 2007, the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust sat down and had another controversial roundtable debate. Unlike previous discussions, the trustees devised a list of not the greatest ever, but the Hottest MCs in the Game right then. The rankings were based on lyrics, flow, impact on the game, success and swagger. The roundtable recently reconvened and came up with a brand-new list of Hottest MCs. Some of the young rapper's detractors say his music lacks substance.By Shaheem Reid Soulja Boy Tell'em Photo: MTV News Two days, two names and two Atlanta natives. The rollout of rankings in the 2008 "Hottest MCs in the Game " list continued Friday (May 15) with Andre 3000 being revealed as number 9. On Wednesday, number 10 turned out to be T.I. One of the big questions surrounding the final eight slots is about yet another ATL performer — the guy with the biggest hit of the last year, Soulja Boy Tell'em. "Crank That" was a worldwide phenomenon, with just about everybody and their mother knowing both the song and its dance moves. CNN even reported on the track, which lays claim to being the highest-selling ringtone of all time with more than 3 million downloads. Soulja Boy Tell'em's debut LP, Souljaboytellem.com, went platinum, and he had hit follow-ups with "Soulja Girl" and "Yahhh!" By all indications he should be a lock, right? California authorities indict Lori Drew for using a fake account to "torment, harass, humiliate and embarrass" 13-year-old Megan Meier.By Gil Kaufman Megan Meier Photo: Tom Gannam/AP A federal grand jury in California indicted a suburban St. Louis mother on Thursday (May 15) for her alleged role in an Internet hoax against a 13-year-old neighbor who committed suicide. According to the Associated Press, Lori Drew was charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization for her part in an alleged bid to get information that was used to inflict emotional distress on Megan Meier. In December, Missouri prosecutors decided not to file charges against Drew, citing a lack of evidence, but federal authorities in California took up the case because it involved actions that allegedly took place on the computer servers of MySpace, which is a subsidiary of Beverly Hills-based Fox Interactive Media Inc. 'There's a lot more to us' than hit single 'Handlebars,' says MC Jonny 5; group's sophomore album to be reissued Tuesday.By James Montgomery Flobots Photo: Marina Chavez/60 Cycle Media You probably already know this, but "Handlebars" — the now-ubiquitous rock-radio tune from Denver, Colorado, collective Flobots — isn't exactly about the skill required to ride a bicycle without using your hands. "The song is about the idea that we have so much incredible potential as human beings to be destructive or to be creative. And it's tragic to me that the appetite for military innovation is endless, but when it comes to taking on a project like ending world hunger, it's seen as outlandish. It's not treated with the same seriousness," Flobots MC Jonny 5 (a.k.a. Jamie Laurie) said. "The lyrics came to me as I was riding a bike home from work with my hands in the air — I had just learned how to do it — and I felt triumphant, but at the same time, I kn...

'There's only greatness that can come from here on out,' final female contestant says.By Katie Byrne Syesha Mercado Photo: Fox Sure, she had the big voice, movie-star looks and undeniable stage presence, but did any "American Idol " fans think Syesha Mercado had top-three staying power? The 21-year-old from Sarasota, Florida, was season seven's unlikely last woman standing, and she earned the most-improved-player award with progressively better performances and a willingness to take some (calculated) risks. But nothing could stop the inevitable David vs. David finale, and Mercado got the boot, thanks to some unfortunate song choices (one hers, the rest out of her hands). We chatted with the confident castoff on Thursday (May 15) to learn the secret to her long run, what she was thinking when she compared her "Idol" run to the civil-rights movement and how she handled a song about animated penguins. Q: You seemed to get better and better as the show progressed. How did...

Same-Sex Marriage Ban Struck Down By California Supreme Court
2008-05-15 09:47:00
Decision says domestic partnerships are not 'constitutionally valid' substitute for marriage.By Michelle Rabinowitz Photo: AP Photo/ Paul Sakuma The California Supreme Court struck down a ban on same-sex marriage on Thursday (May 15), making it possible that the state will become the second in the country, after Massachusetts, to recognize gay and lesbian marriages. The 4-3 decision says that the current law "limiting the designation of marriage to a 'union between a man and a woman' is unconstitutional," and that so-called "domestic partnerships" for same-sex couples are discriminatory and not "constitutionally valid" in place of marriage. The justices also cited the legalization of interracial marriage in California back in the 1940s as a reason for striking down the ban. The case goes back to 2004, when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom allowed gay and lesbian couples to get married in that city. When the court halted the marriages, and eventually nullified them, the...

R. Kelly Trial: Mood Lightens In Court As Offbeat Potential Juror Discusses

Five more jurors are selected for child-pornography trial on second day of questioning.By Jennifer Vineyard R. Kelly arrives at the Cook County Criminal Court house in Chicago on Monday Photo: Charles Rex Arbogast/ AP Images CHICAGO — For the past two days, when prospective jurors have been interviewed as part of jury selection in the R. Kelly trial, Judge Vincent Gaughan has done most of the questioning, trying to provide whatever levity he can to make the process more bearable. Still, it's no wonder, given the cramped confines and uncomfortable chairs of the back room where this all takes place, that the singer was starting to look tired, possibly even bored during the proceedings in his child-pornography trial. That all changed when potential juror Number 37 walked in on Tuesday afternoon. Number 37 was a white male who appeared to be in his 60s, and with his constant looking around and leaning in, he projected an aura of anxiety. Right off the bat, Number 37 set...

'American Idol' Elimination: Syesha Mercado Makes Way For Long-Awaited Davi

After 56 million votes, the final two predicted months ago will belt it out for the title.By Chris Harris David Archuleta and David Cook on "American Idol " Wednesday Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images And then there were two — who were both named David. Before the conclusion of Wednesday night's "American Idol" results show, and before host Ryan Seacrest revealed who was staying and who was going, judge Simon Cowell predicted there would be a "real humdinger next week. " There certainly will be, now that the battle royale the audience has been waiting weeks and weeks for is finally on deck. The battle of the Davids is a go, and David Cook — the 25-year-old "Daughtry Dos" with the Peppermint Patty comb-over — and David Archuleta — the charming 17-year-old with the cherubic face who says "gosh" a whole bunch — are set to take the stage for the show's season-seven finale. Coldplay, Pussycat Dolls Set To Perform At MTV Movie Awards

Show will broadcast live Sunday, June 1.By Shawn Adler Coldplay 's Chris Martin Photo: Vince Bucci/ Getty Images From Jason Bourne to Juno MacGuff, the 2008 MTV Movie Awards are about celebrating the best names in film — but it wouldn't be MTV if some of the biggest names in music didn't get their chance to shine as well. Set your "Clocks" for June 1, when Coldplay will take the stage live at the Gibson Amphitheater to perform the single "Violet Hill" from their first new album in three years, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Released April 29, the song was downloaded more than 2 million times from the Coldplay Web site. Mr. Gwyneth Paltrow (Chris Martin to his friends) and the rest of the band will no doubt be hoping to follow in the footsteps of already-classic MTV Movie Awards performances like the ones from Rihanna and Amy Winehouse at last year's telecast. 'American Idol' Producer Explains Ban On David Archuleta's Dad: 'Let's Take

Jeff Archuleta reportedly upset watching Nigel Lythgoe applaud David Cook Tuesday night.By James Montgomery David Archuleta performs on "American Idol " on Tuesday Photo: Fox While he may have appeared calm during his three performances on Tuesday night's "American Idol," David Archuleta has reportedly found himself in the middle of a growing backstage war between his father and the show's producers. The first salvos were fired Monday, when news broke that "Idol" had banned Archuleta's father, Jeff — who, according to some, is a domineering, career-minded stage dad — from being backstage with his son as he prepares for the show. The order came after Jeff reportedly ordered David to insert Sean Kingston lyrics into a version of Ben E. King's "Stand by Me," a move that cost the show additional song-clearance fees. As that story began to gain traction, both David and "Idol" producers went into damage control. "[My dad has] given me a lot of good advice and hel...

'American Idol' Recap: David Cook Continues To Sizzle; Syesha Mercado Final

Show's three-song night points to long-predicted 'David vs. David' finale.By Jim Cantiello David Cook performs on "American Idol " Tuesday Photo: Fox Tuesday night's penultimate "Idol" performance show reminded us that after three long months, the seventh-season crown will go to either "a high school student," "an actress" or "a barrrrtender." (Considering who we started with this year, it's a good thing America voted the way it did, otherwise Seacrest would have had to refer to a male stripper, a sushi waitress, a horse whisperer, a Rastafarian, a failed major-label pop star or a failed bald pop star instead.) The remaining contestants each had three songs to perform: judge's choice, contestant's choice and producer's choice. (I hope Nigel Lythgoe allowed executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz in on the conversations. Going by her name alone, I bet she has a lot of spunk.) Before I start ranting about how excited I was to see my celeb crush in the audience -- How y...

Many fans have sent in their own lists, and some artists are even chiming in with who they think should be on the list. Obviously, last year's champ is Lil Wayne. His popularity has probably doubled since 2007 — as has his workload. Wayne's in-demand status hasn't waned at all, with monumental guest spots on records like "Duffle Bag Boy," and his own "Lollipop" went to the top of Billboard's Hot 100.
