Album Review: The Band of Heathens ? One Foot In The Ether
2009-09-18 18:31:00 The Band of Heathens has taken something of an unorthodox approach in its ascent to Americana notoriety. The Austin-based quintet made two live records and amassed a legion of fans before releasing its self-titled debut in 2008. Now, the band is back with its second effort, One Foot in the Ether. Fans of Cross Canadian ... More About: Country Music , Review , Album

Friday Five: The Year?s Best Bird Songs
2009-09-18 14:24:00 Birds are creepy, as anyone who’s seen a certain Hitchcock film knows. But from the great speckled bird to Dolly Parton’s little sparrow, these hollow-boned, beady-eyed creatures are something of a country music fixture. Let’s give a listen to some of 2009’s bird songs. 5. “Basket of Singing Birds” – Missy Raines & The New Hip Jazzy ... More About: Songs , Country Music , Playlist , Birds , Friday
Kevin Fowler ? ?Beer Season?
2009-09-17 19:50:00 Texas country rocker Kevin Fowler trades Bambi for Budweiser, hunting for Heineken and ammo for Amstel on his new single ?Beer Season ,? a catchy, silly song that is refreshingly fun for the sake of being fun. Unlike current chart-topping ?good time? songs that are so calculated and slickly produced (think Craig Morgan?s ?Bonfire? or Brooks and ...

Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel ? ?Hesitation Blues?
2009-09-17 17:00:00 In 1933, the year Willie Nelson was born, “Hesitation Blues ” had already been on record for nearly 20 years: The earliest version I can find, listed in the Encyclopedic Discography of Victor Recordings, was by the Victor Military Band in 1916. A Conversation with Johnny Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd
2009-09-17 13:00:00 Early in the 1970?s, a hybrid of rock and roll, blues and country music became immensely popular with a collection of artists from the heartland of America, and was appropriately deemed southern rock. Often thought to be too electric guitar-dominated for country radio at that time, groups like the Allman Brothers, the Charlie Daniels Band , ... Live Blog: Nashville Star, Season Six, Episode One
2008-06-09 22:12:00 It seems a bit anti-climatic to be watching Nashville Star auditions when the finalists have already been announced, but NBC doubtless has some tricks in store to make the network debut of Nashville Star entertaining nonetheless. Tonight?s premiere will also feature a live performance by Taylor Swift, though I don?t know how NBC plans to ... More About: Episode , Blog , Season , Live

Album Review: Jewel - Perfectly Clear
2008-06-04 15:00:00 Perfectly Clear is absolutely magnificent and gloriously country. But only for three minutes and fifty-five seconds. That’s the duration of “Anyone But You,” a starkly classic heartbreak ballad, co-written by Jewel and Wynn Varble, which is startling in its traditional aesthetic and delivered with unexpected authenticity and uncalculated emotion. The track opens with a gentle ... More About: Country Music , Review , Album
Jessica Simpson Is The Highest Charting Debut Solo Artist
2008-06-03 17:46:00 Jessica Simpson made history by becoming the highest charting debut solo artist in the history of Billboard’s country singles chart for her song “Come On Over.” John Bohannon says John Hiatt’s formula becomes closer to perfect with each album and Same Old Man follows in that lineage. George Strait - “Troubadour”
2008-06-03 16:37:00 If it weren’t coming from someone as accomplished as George Strait, “Troubadour” might seem like the regret of a person looking back on an unaccomplished life. As it is, the narrator seems to be content with what he is and what he’s done in his life. It’s a thought that’s simple enough to be relatable by anyone who feels that they are what they are and there isn’t any changing that. “Troubadour” provides for a pleasant listen with Strait’s consistently reliable vocal performance, but there isn’t a whole lot of substance to the lyric. In the chorus, Strait tells us that he sometimes feels “like Jesse James, still trying to make a name, knowing nothings gonna change what I am.” I have to think that the name Jesse James is well known enough, but I’m not sure the lyric will be instantly discernible or if it even makes sense. Is this in reference to Jesse James changing his name to Mr. Howard, but not being able to change his outlaw ways? If so, is... More About: George Strait
Book Review: Sing Me Back Home: Love, Death, and Country Music by Dana Jenn
2008-06-02 20:45:00 It begins with a fitting quote from Hank Williams, “You got to have smelt a lot of mule manure before you can sing like a hillbilly.” Part memoir, part history, part analysis, Dana Jennings sometimes waxes poetic about the country music he loves in Sing Me Back Home: Love , Death, and Country Music . Specifically, country music made between 1950 to 1970, or a time period he still refers to as The Great Depression. The Great Depression we know from the history books had ended by then, but poor people—Jennings’ people—didn’t see much difference in being dirt in the ‘30s and being dirt in the ‘60s. And that’s who the music was made for by people who had been there. “Country music knows broader and deeper truths about the twentieth-century American Dream, universal truths that resonate well beyond the music’s original audience. […] If you truly want to understand the whole United States of America in the twentieth century, you need to understan... More About: Book Review , Country Music
Viewership For ACM Awards Increased; So Did Performers’ Sales
2008-06-02 18:25:00 The 43rd Academy of Country Music Awards saw a 27 percent increase in viewers from 2007 and the artists who performed during the show saw a dramatic increase in sales. In light of the positive news, Orly Adelson, President of Dick Clark Productions, said, “We are very excited about what lies ahead and are accelerating development of country themed original programming.” Cindy Watts has a great piece on the upcoming country singer Crystal Shawanda, who grew up on a reservation where her family didn’t have indoor plumbing. The English translation of her last name, Dawn of a New Day, will be the title of her debut album. For the second time in three years LeAnn Rimes canceled her appearance at a large country music event in Arizona. The Tennessean’s Jonathan Marx talked to Jeffrey Buckner Ford, the eldest son of Tennessee Ernie Ford, on the subjects of his father and his “memoigraphy” about his parents titled River of No Return. Keith Urban - “You Look Good In My Shirt”
2008-06-02 14:56:00 Songwriters: Mark Nesler, Tony Martin, and Tom Shapiro Back in 2004, Keith Urban was preparing to release a 5th single from his Golden Road album, but when “Days Go By” the single from his then upcoming Be Here album was ready, plans for the 5th single were dropped and “Days Go By” was released in its place. Even without any sort of promotion, the would-be 5th single, “You Look Good In My Shirt,” was picked up by a handful of stations and hit #60 on the Billboard chart and has since become a frequent part of Urban’s live show. Now, finding himself between album releases, and with his Love, Pain, and the Whole Crazy Thing World Tour DVD to promote, Urban decided to revisit the song and finally officially release it as a single. I like this song. It kicks off with a country-rock guitar riff that is probably going to be the most enjoyable bit of pickin’ on the radio this summer and–despite the fact that Urban feels inclined to shout out “woooohoooo” and “ye...
Country Musicians Should Totally Pick Up Where Van Halen Left Off
2008-05-30 17:26:00 Today’s head-scratcher brought to you by Sugarland’s Kristian Bush: “There’s no reason that a lot of touring country musicians can’t pick up where Van Halen left off,” Bush said. “It’s just that they don’t want to.” (via ggcolumn) The accolades for Jamey Johnson grow by the day. Album Review: Eleven Hundred Springs - Country Jam
2008-05-30 15:04:00 In conversation, as well as in my writing, I?m often dismissive of current, corporate, country music radio, so it?s typical to field accusations of ?elitism,? of trying to pigeonhole country music?s sound into an early 60?s George Jones mold for narrow-minded nostalgia?s sake, and of requiring that every song have the pretense of earth-shaking ... Sugarland - ?All I Want to Do?
2008-05-30 03:55:00 I?ll say this much about Sugarland : they?re not afraid to be pioneers. Unfortunately, as much as ?Stay,? with its sparse, acoustic and percussion-less arrangement, was an anomalous example of a great country song, ?All I Want to Do? marks a new frontier for bad country songs. There have not been many truly great ... More About: Country Music

Jessica Simpson - ?Come On Over?
2008-05-29 15:46:00 Songwriters: Jessica Simpson , Victoria Banks, Rachel Proctor. Jessica Simpson’s debut “country” single, which amounts to three minutes of step-by-step instructions pertaining to the exact method by which you will leave your house/apartment and “come on over” to hers, is, without question, one of the most pointless songs I’ve ever heard. Can You Duet?s Wild Honey - The Exclusive 9513 Interview

Jerry Audley - ?Lucky Me, Lonely You?
2008-05-27 16:21:00 Songwriters: Ronnie Dunn, Terry Mcbride, Shawn Camp This song is currently #1 on the Texas Music Chart Jerry Audley’s “Lucky Me, Lonely you” is an enjoyable tune that reveals Audley’s sincerity as a country music singer. Unfortunately it’s also a deeply flawed number that annoyed me on several levels. This is the song equivalent of Toby Keith’s ...
