He is renowned for his use of the sweep-picking technique.He graduated from the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) in Hollywood with Student of the Year honors. After graduation, he played the jazz club circuit with his own band and published his first book "Speed Picking". In 1986 he signed a 3 album contract with a small label called Legato.
