It starts out a little up-tempo with "Lower Greenville", followed by the best song on the CD in "Midnight in Madrid", which is the first song I heard from here as it's on another compilation CD I have.But there's not a noticeable drop-off at all after that. "In the Moonlight" and "Just For the Koz", the latter featuring Dave Koz, are good songs. "A Taste of Jazz " is just a nice, beautiful tune, followed by a rendition of "Baby Come Back". "Hold On to the One You Love" is a nice ballad, then "Chicken Joe" is another beautiful tune. The group's got a spare, stripped-down approach that's completely sublime -- with 2 male vocalists trading lines back and forth, and only keys and spare beats behind them. The sound owes a lot to hip hop production, but is much more soul-based in execution -- extremely hip, and very fresh -- with a playful, honest, and organic sort of groove. Some of the lyrics are sung, others are rhymed and rapped, and the combination comes off surprisingly well throughout. The guitarist puts you into a feel good mood right from the outset on the cut `Feeling Good'. The smooth work on `Tradewinds' lures you into a somewhat funky groove. 'Cool' definitely lives up to it name and his rendition of Buffalo Springfield's 'For What it's Worth' is quite impressive. Equally impressive is the talent accompanying him on the project, featuring: former Al Jarreau saxophonist Michael Paulo, Spyro Gyra's Keyboardist Tom Schuman, Bassist Gerald Veasley and Stevie Wonders trumpet player Steve Madeao. Unlike an unbalanced mesh of two completely different styles (e.g. Trans-Siberian Orchestra), this group manages to mix jazz and classical music perfectly, where the modern rhythm section does not dominate the strings or vice versa. They truly play like one group, a remarkable achievement for the wide variety of instruments played at the same time. The project was halted following the sad,untimely passing of Art Porter who recorded some jams with Jeff prior to his accident.Thankfully this album has now seen the light of day and I think that there will be something on it for everybody. It isn't as essential as I had hoped,but it is not as bland and twee as Jeff's recent sets which have fallen into the trap that is 'smoothjazz'.
