2008-05-07 22:57:00 Jodeci - Forever My Lady [1991]Forever Link 2Jodeci's 1991 debut "Forever My Lady" was noteworthy because it married the glossy production of new jack swing to the soulful harmonies of classic R&B. Members K-Ci, JoJo, Devante Swing, and Dalvin Degrate, hailing from Charlotte, are each wonderful singers in their own right, but the group's strength lies in their ability to harmonize. Each member contributes an essential part to the unmistakable sound that is Jodeci's harmonization. They are young but vocally mature singers, and their vocals are pure and clean as they sing appealing love songs. "Forever My Lady" is split between soulful slow jams and upbeat dance tracks. The first half features the classic downtempo tracks that made the group famous, while the second half has new jack swing flavor. While the faster tracks are good, it was the slow jams that caught the world's attention. "Forever My Lady" is a great R&B album that showcases four vocal talents who helped move...

Even though she sings more than raps, she claims Hip Hop as her primary musical roots and an important source of her inspiration. You can call it Hip-hop Soul if you want to, but as most real artists, Nneka doesn't like labels. Even more important for her thoughtful lyrics are her origin and upbringing in Nigeria. "I get inspired when I take a severe look at the things going on in our world today; especially in my country. How people live, suffer and endure pain, politicians and religion. 2008-05-05 16:26:00 Joe McBride -Double Take [1998]McBride Link 2Joe McBride's music is a breath of fresh air amongst the choice available today. This CD is really nice to listen to from start to finish with great tunes throughout. It starts out a little up-tempo with "Lower Greenville", followed by the best song on the CD in "Midnight in Madrid", which is the first song I heard from here as it's on another compilation CD I have. But there's not a noticeable drop-off at all after that. "In the Moonlight" and "Just For the Koz", the latter featuring Dave Koz, are good songs. "A Taste of Jazz " is just a nice, beautiful tune, followed by a rendition of "Baby Come Back". "Hold On to the One You Love" is a nice ballad, then "Chicken Joe" is another beautiful tune. The final two songs are nice ones as well, though not quite the caliber of "Midnight in Madrid" or "A Taste of Jazz".All in all, an excellent CD with nice, mellow tunes throughout.Joe Mcbride & The Texas Rhythm Club-Keepin' It Real [2002]Keep...

2008-05-05 15:17:00 Crossrhodes - Limited Budget Unlimited Quality [2004]Soulful vocals and Fender Rhodes -- what could be better? The group's got a spare, stripped-down approach that's completely sublime -- with 2 male vocalists trading lines back and forth, and only keys and spare beats behind them. The sound owes a lot to hip hop production, but is much more soul-based in execution -- extremely hip, and very fresh -- with a playful, honest, and organic sort of groove. Some of the lyrics are sung, others are rhymed and rapped, and the combination comes off surprisingly well throughout. Titles include "Ya Self", "Put In Work", "Liquid Lady", "I Woke Up", and "Dreamin". 2008-05-05 14:33:00 Steve Oliver -Radiant [2006]Radiant Link 2The smooth Jazz hit `Good to Go' is the best way to describe this new project for Steve Oliver. The guitarist puts you into a feel good mood right from the outset on the cut `Feeling Good'. The smooth work on `Tradewinds' lures you into a somewhat funky groove. 'Cool' definitely lives up to it name and his rendition of Buffalo Springfield's 'For What it's Worth' is quite impressive. Equally impressive is the talent accompanying him on the project, featuring: former Al Jarreau saxophonist Michael Paulo, Spyro Gyra's Keyboardist Tom Schuman, Bassist Gerald Veasley and Stevie Wonders trumpet player Steve Madeao. This CD adds a little pop flavor to the mix with `Bend or Break'. A softer side of Steve Oliver is manifested in `Shine' and `Across the Water'. She hails from Atlanta, and like so many other solo stars on her scene, she first started out by lending backup vocals to other singers, including Monica and Bilal, so that by the time of this debut, she's already got a voice that's been well-trained for years. Luckily, most of those tracks from that EP appear on this album, including the poignant 'What Happened?' If you don't play any other song on this album, play that one! 2008-05-04 14:19:00 Peter White - Playin' Favorites [2006]Playin' Link 2Obviously this collection of old pop hits is aimed at the smooth jazz set, not the mainstream jazz crowd, and by its standards, it gets the job done with its carefully produced blend of shimmering atmospheric effects, spare horn charts, lite grooves, breathy female background voices--and, of course, White's ringing melodic statements, for which he should be called Mr. Clean--if he isn't already. 2008-05-04 03:36:00 The Heritage Orchestra - The Heritage Orchestra (2006)Link 2First, one must understand that The Heritage Orchestra is truly an orchestra, 45 strong with a deep string section and powerful brass. Mingled inside the orchestral set up lies a jazz rhythm section, with guitar, bass, drums, vibes, keyboards, and other various instruments. Unlike an unbalanced mesh of two completely different styles (e.g. Trans-Siberian Orchestra), this group manages to mix jazz and classical music perfectly, where the modern rhythm section does not dominate the strings or vice versa. They truly play like one group, a remarkable achievement for the wide variety of instruments played at the same time. 2008-05-04 03:07:00 Jeff Lorber - Shades Of Soul [2004]Shades Link 2Shades Of Soul is the brainchild of Jeff Lorber, and collaborators Nathaniel Phillips and Marlon McClain from the Dazz Band. I had expected this CD as far back as 2000 on the Major Hits label, and even earlier. The project was halted following the sad, untimely passing of Art Porter who recorded some jams with Jeff prior to his accident.Thankfully this album has now seen the light of day and I think that there will be something on it for everybody. It isn't as essential as I had hoped, but it is not as bland and twee as Jeff's recent sets which have fallen into the trap that is 'smoothjazz'. I think that Jeff Lorber is more at home with the funkier side of jazz and he really excels at the smoother side of soul. His previous works with James Robinson, Karyn White, Michael Jeffries and Benét have been outstanding in many ways, and I hope that this set sees a trend back to this style of work. This funkiness continues with the OK "Get Wid... But notwithstanding his European and Latin influences (the latter of which is winningly exposed on "Bossalectro"), his primary interest is sleek American-style smooth jazz. Antoine is a graceful player with a glowing tone on nylon strings, and percussive effects give the music a welcome edge. He also takes chances, as on a re-harmonization of the old Classics IV hit, "Spooky." But there are also unfortunate bland stretches.
