2008-05-03 15:51:00 Climatic - Incanto [2008]Incanto Link 2Incanto, latin: 'to enchant by music', is the motto of Climatics second longplayer on 4mpo. The artist from Cologne once again has taken a long journey through various styles of electronic music without losing sight of the lounge/deep house concept. The album, which sustains a soft and slightly melancholic undertone, holds many cinematic moments. Sometimes one dives deeply into sun-splashed beach atmosphere, finds himself in a shady dock scenery , la James Bond and then gets carried away by a 70's french movie... Dennis Legree, a very expressive singer and songwriter, you might as well know by his collaborations with Inaya Day and Deep Dive Corporation, appears on two new vocal tracks: 'You rescued me', gospel music gets fused with trip hop, what comes out is a very personal and intense ballad. 2008-05-02 17:49:00 Urban Knights - Urban Knights V [2003]Link 2The is the fifth album from the rotating smooth jazz all-star showcaseUrban Knights, and it continues with much the same flavor as the group's previous releases: a mix of post-bop jazz influences and straightforward R&B. The album opens with an instrumental version of Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" featuring bandleader Ramsey Lewis covering the main vocal parts with his piano. Two collective originals follow, leading into Michelle Williams' soft vocals on "Will You Still Love Me?" "On the Up" is an original with a thick electronic funk thanks largely to Kenny Garrett. Another group original follows in the same vein, although the collective takes on Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" yield mixed results, holding Steve Zoloto's sax over the top of a groove. Some contemporary R&B pokes through on "No One," and Orbert Davis invokes a bit of Miles Davis on his trumpet over the funk of "The New Funktier." After another short R... More About: Jazz , Urban

Multiphonically magnificent the soaring saxophone workby Hungarian top-instrumentalist Tony Lakatos; on loan from the Nils Landgren Funk Unit the authoritative bass voicings from Magnum Coltrane Price; at times thrilling, other times gossamer light, always enchanting the guitar sounds of DutchmanPeter Tiehuis when his fingers touch down on the strings. Having toured with the enigmatic Prince for years, has picked up many of The Artist's (Prince) habits, both good and self indulgent. 2008-04-30 03:36:00 Candi Staton - His Hands [2006]Staton Link 2Candi Staton is the latest in the row of veterans to be brought back under our attention. The last two decades she mostly spend singing gospel. His Hands is her first secular effort in years. And a successful effort it is. The former first lady of Southern soul, now 66, reaches back to her secular heyday for In His Hands, a chronicle of hurt so drenched in raw feeling you can practically wring out the sweat and tears. This is music as time-travel: like Sharon Jones of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings or Bettye Lavette, Staton flouts the rules of modern music-making--nothing flashy here, no tarted-up beats or slick come-ons--in favor of sending her listeners to somewhere deep in the trenches of a heart that--despite it all--refuses to frost over. Lizz has a much more mature look on the cover of the record, and her music definitely shows that change -- a shift into tighter songwriting than before, and a really solid sound that has her blossoming greatly as a soul artist. We loved her debut, but we're even more surprised at the sound of this one -- a complicated mix of modes that really lets Fields open up vocally, especially on some of the mellower tunes, which we really like a lot. There's some jazzy touches too -- and these come off very well, by pushing Lizz into strongly confident territory, yet without some of the diva soul cliches of other contemporary artists. With tracks produced by some of the leading producers in R&B, Latin, and dance music, Renaissance plays like a sampler of contemporary popular music. Richie is at his romantic best on "Don't You Ever Go Away," an intoxicatingly soulful ballad that leaves anyone within earshot rocking to its hypnotic beat. With its bass-heavy production and complex vocal patterns, "Wasted Time" (a song about a love affair gone sour) is a melodic testament to Richie's vocal ability. He traveled to London to work with dance music producers Rawling and Taylor on "Angel," a love song with serious party potential. What is most impressive about Renaissance is not that Richie has kept his ear to the street, but rather that he has taken the contemporary and made it his own.
