Diamond Does It Again - First Number One Album in the U.K.
2008-05-18 21:02:00 Some said that the reason Neil Diamond received his first U.S. number one album was because of his appearance on American Idol. They may need to eat their words now as the singer has also achieved his first chart topper of original material on the U.K. albums chart.Home Before Dark not only sets a personal record for Diamond, but also a British chart record with Diamond being the artist to take the longest to achieve their first number one album of original work.Diamonds album history in the U.K. starts a little later than the U.S. with the live album, Gold, being his first chart entry in 1971. For original material, he peaked number three with 1980's Jazz Singer soundtrack. He also peaked at number three with the live album Love at the Greek in 1977 and had a number one album in 1992 with compilation The Greatest Hits 1966-72. In total, he charted 29 albums in Britain before Home Before Dark. More About: Album , Number

Spinner Picks Really Bad Songs by Really Good Artists
2008-05-14 01:03:00 We post all sorts of lists here, no because we think they are right or show great authority, but because they are fun to consider, discuss and even argue about.Which brings us to today's list from Spinner. It's 20 Bad Songs by Good Bands (and by bands, they really mean artists since there's a few soloists here). I really can't argue with a number of these picks. Dancing in the Dark may have been the big top forty break for Springsteen, but it is one of his most uncharacteristic tracks. 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover always seemed like amateur songwriter rhymes and Roses just stunk. On the other hand, how can you fault Stand by R.E.M. The building was the former home of producer and manager Robert Stigwood.Robin Gibb was at the unveiling and said "It's a tremendous honour to be acknowledged for doing something we love and a joy to be able to celebrate the unveiling of this marvellous green plaque. This location means a great deal to us and is somewhere we wrote a lot of our songs. It's very special and more so because of losing Maurice in 2003 my twin brother. It's an honour to him because he is no longer with us and because it is bringing up memories. It used to be a hub for meeting up and writing."Gibb also said that a musical based on the songs of the group is being written for the West End and should premier in twelve to sixteen months.
