Evening Update - Marie Osmond, Madonna, Paul McCartney, more
2008-05-10 05:45:00
Marie Osmond has weighed in on the whole Miley Cyrus photo fiasco. Her criticism is not for Miley, but for her father Billy Ray for leaving the shoot before it was over. Osmond told AOL Television, "My parents never, never left us alone. We always had some form of a guardian or something with us, a guardian that would represent what they would have done."There is an active rumor in the U.K. that Madonna may expand her schedule at London's Wembley Arena from her current single show to a full residency. The reports say that it could challenge Michael Jackson's twenty-year-old record of seven nights at the venue. It's probably just a lot of fan speculation, but English chat boards are overrun with the idea that Ringo Starr will play with Paul Mc Cartney at Liverpool's Sound City music festival from May 27 to 30. A source tells the Daily Star "There's been a lot of chat in Beatles fan chatrooms on the internet and the feeling is that it could happen."A new on-line poll in Englan...

Afternoon Update - Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond, Frank Zappa, Brian May
2008-05-09 01:20:00
What do you get when you see Bruce Springsteen in a small theater? Last night he and the E-Street Band played a fund raiser at and for the Count Basie Theater in New Jersey and the lucky few who made it got to hear an all-70's show, including complete playings, in order, of both the Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town albums. They even got the Max Weinberg 7 horn section on a few songs in addition to the regular E-Street Band horns. Neil Diamond's "surprise" show at the Bitter End in New York last night was an obvious sellout with speakers being put in the windows so the unlucky fans could hear the show. The seven song set included three songs from his mid-60's days at Bang Records, three from the new album Home Before Dark and the classic Sweet Caroline. Diamond revealed to the crowd that he had played one of his selections, Kentucky Woman, on that very stage forty years ago.The set list:Solitary ManDon?t Go ThereHome Before DarkPretty Amazing GraceKentucky WomanCh...

Eddy Arnold (1918 to 2008)
2008-05-08 22:36:00
Country music lost one of its all-time greats earlier today with the death of Eddy Arnold at the age of 89. Arnold had been in an assisted-living center near Nashville and had lost his wife of 66 years, Sally Gayhart Arnold, back in March.Eddy Arnold is considered to have had the greatest chart run in country music history. Between June 1945 and January 1982, he placed 128 records in the country top 40, including 28 that went to number one and 92 that hit the top ten. He holds the record for most consecutive top ten hits with 67. He so dominated the charts that, from November 1, 1947 to January 22, 1949, he had six number ones that topped the charts for a total of 61 weeks. Only one other record, Jimmy Wakely's One Has My Name (the Other Has My Heart) managed to make its way to the top during those fourteen-plus months.Arnold's appeal was in the way he took a music that was best known for its hillbilly sound and updated it to a style that could be accepted by people of all m...

Jerry Wallace (1933 - 2008)
2008-05-08 05:29:00
Pop turned country singer Jerry Wallace, who took his song Primrose Lane to the top ten in 1959, has died of congestive heart failure at his home in Corona, California. He was 79.Wallace began his recording career in 1951 with Allied. Seven years later, after switching to Challenge Records, he broke onto the charts with How the Time Flies, which reached number eleven. A year later, he released the biggest hit of his career with Primrose Lane, which went to number eight. Interestingly, while both were very pop oriented, they crossed over onto the R&B charts and peaked at numbers eleven and twelve respectively. In 1964, at the end of his time with Challenge, he once again challenged the upper parts of the charts with In the Misty Moonlight. While the single stopped at number nineteen on the pop charts, it ascended to number two on the Adult Contemporary. In total, Wallace placed thirteen singles in the top 100 between 1951 and 1972.The following year, after signing a short ...

Diamond MAY Be Heading For His First Number One Album
2008-05-08 02:12:00
Only one day of sales have been tallied so far but, if things keep selling at the current pace, Neil Diamond may have the first number one album of his career.First day sales from the Nielsen SoundScan Building chart have sales of Home Before Dark at 30,000. That would project out to a possible 125,000 copy opening week. Madonna's Hot Candy is looking to slip to two or three depending on sales of other new albums from artists like Gavin DeGraw, Clay Aiken and Josh Groban. If, in the end, Diamond does achieve number one in the opening week, it will be something he has never managed to do with the previous 45 albums that have hit the charts. He has previously reached the top ten fourteen times with the soundtrack to Jonathan Livingston Seagull doing best with a number two peak. His last Rick Ruben produced album, 12 Songs, peaked at number four. For the record, Neil Diamonds top ten albums:Gold (1970, peak at number 10)Moods (1972, 5)Hot August Night (1973, 5)Jonathan Livingston ...

Listomania: Prince Songs, Concept Albums

Rolling Stone polls have been a bit strange over the last few weeks, so we've chosen not to cover them as they've been along the lines of best songs with a color in the title; however, this week, in salute to his set at Coachella, they asked their readers to name their favorite Prince songs. The list isn't bad, with When Doves Cry being the most popular. Forty Years After, Word Comes of Fixed Eurovision Song Contest
2008-05-05 23:10:00
Back in 1968, Cliff Richard was the favorite to win the annual Eurovision Song Contest for his composition Congratulations. When the final vote was announced, Spain's Massiel beat him out by just one vote for his song La La La. According to a new documentary from producer Montse Fernandez Vila, the win was fixed by then Spanish leader Francisco Franco. In the documentary, TV host Jose Maria Inigo says "It was a fix. Massiel won Eurovision with bought votes."Franco saw a victory in the contest as vital in boosting Spain's image abroad. To accomplish the task, he had Spanish TV executives make deals across the continent for programming in return for votes.Bjorn Erichsen, head of Eurovision TV, was not aware of the controversy, although he did know that there had been back room deals in the past to swap votes. It is one of the reasons that the contest did away with national juries.Erichson said, "Franco was really so keen for Spain to win it? We're not talking about NATO here or...
