Big Jam in L.A.
2008-05-02 21:49:00
No, it wasn't a traffic jam. The Roxy in Los Angeles was the site of the first of five weekly shows from an entity called Camp Freddy, a side project of Dave Navarro (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, Velvet Revolver) and Matt Sorum (Cult, Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver). What makes these appearances interesting is the number of veteran and modern rockers that took the stage to cover numerous classic rock tracks. The band itself is made up of Navarro and Sorum along with Billy Morrison (Cult), Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction), Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray) and Donovan Leitch (son of Donovan). Added to that lineup were Thursday's guests Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead), Steve Jones and Paul Cook (Sex Pistols), Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains), Warren DiMartini (Ratt) and Poe.The sets bounced between covers of rock classics and a few songs done by original group members. With all of the talent on stage, there were times when there were three and four guitarists, bassists and drummer...

2008-05-02 07:27:00
Billy Idol is releasing a new compilation on June 24 via Capitol/EMI called The Very Best of Billy Idol : Idolize Yourself. The album will be released as a CD, CD/DVD combo and digitally. Two new tracks, John Wayne and New Future Weapon, are included on the 18-track CD while the deluxe edition adds a DVD with thirteen music videos, two of which are alternate versions never released before in any format.Idol talked about the new track John Wayne:"When I'm singing it, I'm thinking about the characters John Wayne played. They were usually men with a flaw in their character or something dark in their past they're trying to rise above before the end of the movie. So it's not about the kick-in-the-door John Wayne or the barroom fight John Wayne -- it's more the man who overcomes."On New Future Weapon:"I was reading about the new stealth fighter plane the Raptor, and I was struck by the ambivalence of the pilot talking about the enemy. 2008-05-02 01:01:00
Jon Anderson of Yes has told Billboard that the group is working on four new songs that are all of the "opus" style, long and multi-movement. This, of course, is nothing new for the group, but it is something that they haven't tried in quite awhile. He also revealed that he has been talking to 80's Yes member Trevor Rabin and there is some though of doing a tour with that lineup. He did say, though, that he doesn't believe it would become a recording entity.Elvis Costello is teaming up with choreographer Twyla Tharp to create a new ballet.Justin Timberlake joined Madonna for a seven-song set last night at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. The show was to support the release of Hard Candy on Tuesday and five of the seven songs performed were from the album. The crowd also got to see a double screw up during the song Hung Up. 2008-05-01 08:15:00
Early figures show that Madonna 's Hard Candy has sold about 100,000 copies on it's date of release. She indicated that it "was a long date. Really. I lived in his apartment.""He was so wonderful. And I was so crazy about him and he was so, like, different. He was a shy boy. He didn't have any money."Lamar Fike and Marty Lacker, two of Elvis Presley's "Memphis Mafia", claim that the singer never visited England as stated by English star Tommy Steele. Legacy to Release 30th Anniversary Edition of Billy Joel's The Stranger
2008-05-01 05:10:00
Even though Billy Joel had moderate success before 1977, most notably with his single Piano Man, it was the album The Stranger that launched him to the level of superstar.Sony Legacy will salute that achievement on July 8 with the release The Stranger: 30th Anniversary . The classic album will come in two special editions, a two CD set and a deluxe edition with two CDs and a DVD.The album was originally released in September, 1977 and marked the first of a run of collaborations with Phil Ramone. 2008-05-01 01:26:00
In an interview with Billboard, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck says to expect a lot of older material during the upcoming tour. We're obviously going to play the new record. We've been playing nine songs off it, which is 28 minutes or something, so there's a lot of space for us to do stuff from all through our career." He also stated to expect the selected tunes to fit closer to the harder-rock nature of Accelerate rather than their more recent softer material.Although nothing is yet on paper, Jon Bon Jovi has told sportsillustrated.com that they are working to put together a big show in New York's Central Park.Roger Waters can stop worrying, although he may be in mourning. Evening Update - John Lennon, Carly Simon, James Taylor
2008-04-30 08:13:00
The handwritten lyrics by John Lennon for Give Peace a Chance will be auctioned off in July by Christie's of London. The lyrics were given to the seller, Gail Renard, who was 16 at the time of the May 1969 bed-in in Montreal. She got into the room with a friend but quickly became friendly with Lennon after offering him a chocolate bar, so friendly, in fact, that she stayed the whole seven days, but only after Lennon himself cleared it with her mother.Lennon gave her the lyrics during the week. Christies expects it to fetch between $400,000 and $600,000.Carly Simon has made it clear she has a favorite on this year's American Idol and it's none other than Brooke White who seems to channel Simon at times. She was first impressed after she saw White perform You're So Vain."I thought, `Oh my God, this girl is so talented and she sings the song so much better than I ever did or ever could. I was so flattered that she chose the song and more than impressed. I think she should win.Ja...

Prince Dazzles at Coachella
2008-04-27 23:38:00
After years of trying, the organizers of the Coachella festival finally lured Prince to their stage and, no matter the cost, it may be some of the best money they've ever spent.Prince came on stage about thirty minutes late in a cloud of dry ice, said "Coachella, I am here" and launched into The Bird and Jungle Love with Morris Day singing. From their on out it was a combination greatest hits, collaboration, covers set that left the crowd dizzy with excitement.Among the covers were a nine-minute version of Radiohead's Creep that, while generally true to the original version, contained a lengthy Prince guitar solo. Also covered were the Beatles Come Together, where he managed to get the crowd chanting "War no more" and Sarah McLachlan's Angel which was sung by a member of his group during a costume change. It was the hits, though, that anchored the show from 1999 to Cream to Purple Rain. Prince stayed over an hour past when the day's music was supposed to be over, introducing h...
