Bo Diddley Sent Off With a Celebration
2008-06-08 05:24:00
The funeral of rock great Bo Diddley was held earlier today in Gainesville, Florida and it was four hours of memories, tributes and Rock and Roll.At the beginning, as family members passed the casket, a gospel band played Bo Diddley with the crowd joining in. Flowers surrounded the dais from the likes of George Thorogood, Tom Petty and Jerry Lee Lewis.Speakers talked not just about his music influence, but also the man who was always friendly and giving to those who had less than him. Diddley's brother, the reverend Kenneth Haynes, said he sometimes tired of the musician's life but remembered him saying "But this is what God gave me to feed my family. I have to keep doing it until God says it's enough."Eric Burdon said, "I've been a fan of his since 16, 17 years of age. Probably one of the first records I ever owned.""He's always been jumping around and very aggressive; if he was onstage with the Stones, he was obviously putting Keith Richards in his place. I call it bone m...

Evening Update - Rush, Janet Jackson, Randy Travis
2008-06-07 08:16:00
Geddy Lee of Rush has purchased and donated a collection of more than two hundred baseballs signed by players of the pre-1950 Negro Leagues to the Negro League Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. He said he chose to make the donation after touring the museum and being moved by the story of the league and its players.Even though it seemed to be on the charts for numerous weeks, Janet Jackson 's album Discipline is being considered another failure by her record company, who have chosen to stop any further promotion and will not be releasing any further singles. Jackson, in a note to Perez Hilton, wrote, "We started off with Feedback and the label and myself haven't quite seen eye to eye since the Feedback single so they've kind of basically stopped all promotion."I'm trying to figure out a way to say this, but just to say it and to be quite honest, they just stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album, so I don't think you're going to hear another single off this album."Randy Tr...

The End of Toto
2008-06-07 07:50:00
Steve Lukather, one of the founding members of Toto , has been hinting around about ending the group after thirty-five years. On Friday, he made it official on his website. The announcement is quite long, but here are a few of the highlights."I would like to make a formal annoucement as I have been barraged by e-mails and speculations on various websites. The fact is yes I have left Toto. There is no more Toto. I told the guys before the last leg of our tour.We had some differences in how business was being done. The other fact is that I have been the only guy who was at the first rehearsal till the last gig a month or so ago. When Jeff died part of us all died with him.I have only the deepest respect for the guys that have been in and out of this band over the years. We had a great run and I owe an awful lot to the experience and the success we had. We hung in there hard despite being the most hated band in the world by most so called "rock critics".I just cant do it anymore and at...

Nothing has been confirmed, but there are rumors that the show will eventually show up as a PBS special.Chalk up another artists on the Obama bandwagon. Bob Dylan told the U.K.'s Times, "America is in a state of upheaval. Poverty is demoralising. You can't expect people to have the virtue of purity when they are poor."But we've got this guy out there now who is redefining the nature of politics from the ground up, Barack Obama. He's redefining what a politician is, so we'll have to see how things play out."Am I hopeful? Yes, I'm hopeful that things might change. Some thing...

2008-06-07 01:02:00
Both Benny Mardones and Eddie Money have come out publically against illegal file downloading.Mardones said it a statement, "If retailers and artists do not offer music consumers what they want, when they want it, they will turn to other resources, such as contaminated P2P networks. I want better control of the distribution of my music, so everyone gets paid in a fair way. It's nice to know there is technology out there like SafeMedia, which will help us with the problem of illegal music, downloads."SafeMedia is a new encryption product called Clouseau that reportedly makes it impossible to share illegal files over the net.Eddie Money said earlier this week, "If you like music, don't steal it. One of the most basic rights I control by reviewing and choosing licences is the right to say 'no'. The filmmakers simply looted me of the ability to do so." Unfortunately, this means I won't be able to tour with Yes this summer as originally planned. I'd like everyone know how deeply disappointed I am by this turn of events. I was looking forward to celebrating our music with the amazing family of Yes fans once again; but as we all know, health must come before anything else. Rare concerts by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and Lynyrd Skynyrd are now available for legal paid download from Wolfgang's Vault .The site, which started as an on-line audio only venue for the archives of the late Bill Graham, was criticized by the major record companies as possibly infringing on artist's rights; however, it is no being embraced as another way to market classic, and previously unavailable, recordings. The new downloads are being made available via an agreement with Universal Music Group. Crosby, Stills and Nash will perform a benefit concert on June 12 at the Los Angeles House of Blues to raise money for music education. The widow of Sean Levert has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the officials who were holding him in the Cuyahoga County Jail. She is accusing the jailers of ignoring Levert's medical needs, even though an official autopsy showed there was no fault. The big labels are starting to sign up with the free & legal download services. Universal has already signed up and now EMI is with both Spiralfrog and Qtrax. The two holdouts are Sony BMG and Warner.Sprialfrog and Qtrax are both download services where tracks from licensed services can be downloaded for free. Artists are paid via advertising revenue from the services. This does, however, come with some drawbacks as, for example, Spiralfrog tracks can only be played on Microsoft Windows Player enabled devices (so, no iPod) and they will not copy to CD. Set List - Cher in Las Vegas
2008-06-04 07:46:00
Cher did her Farewell Tour over the last (seemingly) decade or so and has now taken up residency at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas for almost fifty shows this year and more to be scheduled in 2009. The fact that she is doing so well in a theater that seats almost 4,300 with top tickets going for $250 is a testament to her ongoing popularity. From the review, the song list is not that different from her last tour, but the show itself is on a much grander scale. Video screens project various scenes and highlights from her career. Dancers move across the stage and aerialists drop from the ceiling. Per the review in Variety, "Not a cutting edge show nor even one that emphasizes vocal prowess, this is a more a reminder of the length and breadth of Cher?s career assembled with a ?Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour? aesthetic -- play your hits, sing other people songs, make the audience laugh and give them something attractive to look at."The set list for Cher in Las Vegas:I Still Haven?t Fo...

Artists from around the world have been commenting on the passing of Bo Diddley. Bonus Tracks Announced for Early U2 Album Reissues
2008-06-03 20:44:00
Early U2 albums Boy, October and War will be released in new, remastered version on July 22 via Universal. Each will be available in a remastered single-CD, a two-CD set with a full disc of bonus material and on vinyl.Boy, the groups first album, was released in 1980 but failed to catch the ear of most music listeners. Right from the start, their big signature sound was evident, but the album didn't chart in the U.K. and only reached number 63 in the U.S.October (1981) started the group's real ascent to fame, although the critics found it like the first album but a bit too overdone and "pompus." In the U.S., it actually did slightly worse than Boy, peaking at 104. In Britain, it was their first charting album and ascended to number eleven.War (1983) was the true kickoff to the phenomenon that became U2. With tracks like New Year's Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday, the album went to number one in the U.K. and number twelve in the U.S.The bonus tracks for Boy:I Will Follow (Previ...

2008-06-03 00:27:00
Yoko Ono and her son Sean have lost the lawsuit against the makers of the film Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed for their unauthorized use of the song Imagine.U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein found in favor of the film makers, basing it on the "fair use" doctrine. "That doctrine provides that the fair use of a copyrighted work for purposes of criticism and commentary is not an infringement of copyright." The filmmakers had argued that, because they used less than thirty seconds of the song, they did not owe royalties or need to get permission.Peter Gabriel's new site, The Filter, will officially be opened tomorrow (Tuesday). The site asks users to rate a series of songs, films and acts to try to discern likes/dislikes and then offers up now or forgotten music based on those findings. Gabriel explained, "The Internet, which I think is an amazing creation, provides access to an ocean of limitless information, but without filtering it's easy to drown, but if you have this little ...
