2008-01-27 23:47:00 CAMEL - Radio Broadcasts Live 1973-74Camel were the soft side of the Canterbury school. A perfect mix of that kaleidoscopic "dada" musical contructions with more mainstream prog patterns. But in the beginning of their career the first half was prominent, and made of Camel a very interesting band. Not too many documents of that period are available around, while their live albums are dated some years later. So here we choose some BBC efforts to make an homage here to their shining days. The complete edition of these sessions, featuring a long Snow Goose rendition, may be found on their official bootleg Gods Of Light. The line-up:Andrew Latimer / guitar, vocalsPeter Bardens / keyboards, vocalsDoug Ferguson / bass, vocalsAndy Ward / drums The tracks:1. 2007-11-24 00:48:00 POPOL VUH - Live at Università Statale, Milan, September 1975This concert was organized by the italian musical magazine Gong. The aim was to promote the music of the Cosmic Couriers brand after Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser, the mythical German producer, signed with italian PDU label (see a short history in our Pickin' The Comments section) for licensing the Ohr and Pilz records in Italy under this distinctive mark. Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Cosmic Jokers, Ash Ra Tempel and others’ albums were so made available in this land. This is a rare audience recording with its obvious quality limits. MANFRED SCHOOF - Horizons (Germany 1980)
2007-11-22 23:11:00 Manfred Schoof is a German jazz trumpet player. In 1969, he joined the George Russell Orchestra and stayed with the band until 1971. Throughout the next two decades, Schoof expanded his musical horizons, recording and performing with several groups, including Global Unity Orchestra and Jasper van't Hof. Recorded in November 1979 at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg, Horizon s was released on the JAPO label. JAPO is an abbreviation for Jazz by Post and was the predecessor of ECM. This album, though a little late for the golden era of progressive jazz, has ever been one of our German jazz favourite, alongside with Rolf Kühn's Going To The Rainbow. Notable here is the presence of Rainer Brüninghaus on keyboards. This is a Lp rip.The line-up:Manfred Schoof - trumpet, fluegelhornRainer Brüninghaus - piano, synthesizerMichel Pilz - bass clarinetGünter Lenz - bassRalf Hübner - drumsThe tracks:1. JOHN MAYALL - Ten Years Are Gone Vol. 2 (1973)
2007-11-22 01:01:00 Here's the promised Volume Two of this missed album. This is the live record. With two warnings: this set is very lower in inspiration than Jazz Blues Fusion or Moving On, and the sound quality in the original vinyl was surprisingly poor for an official record: this is probably one of the reasons of its discard from the catalogue. NIEMEN - Aerolit (Poland 1974)
2007-11-21 01:20:00 Czes?aw Niemen (1939 - 2004) was one of the most important and original Polish musicians. His song of 1967, Dziwny jest ten ?wiat (Strange Is This World) became the most important Polish protest song of that era. He was one of the first Polish performers to wear long hair and colourful clothes and introducing psychedelia style to communist Poland . In 1969 he changed musical style to progressive rock while recording the monumental album Enigmatic. Niemen played Hammond organ, later mellotron and Moog synthesizer on his records. In the early 70s, Niemen recorded three English language albums under the CBS label. ISOTOPE - Perception Of The Beholder (Holland 2002)
2007-11-17 00:25:00 Though not too far in musical context, these guys are not the Seventies? English Isotope with Gary Boyle and Hugh Hopper, but a contemporary band from Holland . Drummer Sebastiaan Cornelissen formed this jazz/fusion trio at The Conservatory of Amsterdam along with his teacher and well-known Dutch piano virtuoso Rob van Bavel. They have since released two albums: Isotope (1999) and Perception of the Beholder (2002). Though not out of print, this album is not easy to find and to buy from the main and safe records sellers, so we think to give it an helping hand in letting you know it as it deserves. The line-up:Rob Van Bavel - Electric PianoUdo Pannekeet - BassSebastiaan Cornelissen - DrumswithTom Beek - SaxRuud Breuls - TrumpetJan van Duikeren - TrumpetWim Both - TrumpetIlja Reijngoud - TromboneThe tracks:1. KLAUS SCHULZE - The Studio Seventies Vol.1 1970-73
2007-11-16 00:54:00 It?s difficult for a band like us to deny the influence of Klaus Schulze on our music. Just as it is for a big part of contemporary musicians involved in the non-pop use of keyboards and electronics. So, an homage to The Cosmic Musician is due. We present here five non-album studio recordings dating the 1970-1973 period, the most experimental one: long before his debut solo work Irrlicht to his second one, Cyborg. As this collection's title says, a Volume 2 will probably follow? The tracks:CD11. Tempus Fugit (1970) [26:25]2. Landpartie (1972) [10:47]3. Dynamo (1973) [14:27]CD24. Traumraum (1973) [31:41]5. DON ?SUGAR CANE? HARRIS - Keep On Driving (1970)
2007-11-15 01:06:00 "When actually he was to come, it was November. I wrote him to bring along an over-coat as Villingen is 1000 metres high and there was already snow in the Black Forest. When on the eve of his departure to Germany Don with his new coat stepped out of a shop in Venice, near Los Angeles, some bloke threatened him with a gun ('it was a big one - a real canon') and coat, car, money, violin, bass, and - 'this was the worst' - lovely ring changed their owner. 'I literally lost everything but the ticket to Europe.' And that is why two day later Don 'Sugar Cane ' Harris stood chilly and trembling in the Black Forest's snow in white beach shoes and in a summer-shirt Californian style and with a single US-dollar only. He had to borrow the violin from a music shop in Donaueschingen, the pick up from Volker Kriegel, and the coat from the son of an MPS employee" (J. E. Berendt, excerpt from the original Lp liner notes). That's enough to introduce the first Sugar Cane's MPS album: the mu... More About: Driving
TERRY RILEY & DON CHERRY - Studio Session, Copenhagen, September 1970
2007-11-14 00:51:00 The legend regarding this session tells that took place in a completely darkened room, with the musicians seated in a circle on the floor. And that the session itself was the result of a casual meeting of Riley and Cherry . Apart from this all, this recordings are rather interesting, especially the second part, that recalls nearly the structure of the most famous Riley?s work, A Rainbow In Curved Air, following a slight more minimalist first part. The line-up:Terry Riley - soprano sax part 1 & 3, organ part 2Don Cherry - pocket trumpet, wood drum part 2Knud Bjørnøe - flute part 1 & 2, drum part 3Jesper Zeuthen - soprano sax part 1, tenor sax & tambourine part 2, wooden flute part 3Poul Ehlers - bass part 1 & 2, cello part 3The tracks:1. VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - The Virtual Live (1970-72)
2007-11-12 00:18:00 The unusual thing in the VDGG discography - compared with the other main bands of the golden prog era - is the lack of an official live album in the higher days of their career. Earthbound, Yessongs, Playing The Fool, Genesis Live ... was common efforts in those days: but Van Der Graaf published their Vital/Live only in 1978, when they had yet lost the word Generator from the name and the keyboards of Hugh Banton from the band. Moreover, the unofficial VDGG recording field is very poor, made of a fistful of horribly sounding bootlegs. So, like in a genetic laboratory, we tried to reconstruct the live album that never was picking the most listenable and rare fragments and joining them together in a skeleton of classic VDGG 1970-72 concert. We reprocessed the pieces to obtain the most audible and uniform sound possible, split all in a two-disc set, drew the cover... and so The Virtual Live is here to simulate an evening show of thirtyfive years ago: the rest it?s up to your immaginatio...
GRATEFUL DEAD - The Other Ones Restored Edition (1967-1995)
2007-11-11 11:09:00 Due to the discover of a new long 1967 performance, we decided to expand our The Other Ones compilation. In doing this, we also decided to substitute some of the formerly included performances with new better sounding items - and notably the 1971, 1989, 1994 and 1995 ones - and to remove the unuseful one minute long 1972-part2 track. All these variations are included in the CDs 1 and 4, wich we provided of new links: so, if you intend to upgrade your copy, download these two volumes only. All of this can be found in the original post. More About: Dead , Grateful Dead , Edition
EDDIE LOUISS - Our Kind Of Sabi (1970)
2007-11-11 00:27:00 Let?s have a short break from the Association P.C.'s albums to listen to another gem from the great MPS/Basf vaults. This time we put forward a peculiar work featuring an unusual organ/sax/drums trio leaded by the French organist Eddie Louiss. As always out of print, this is moreover one of the most difficult to find something about even in the Net. But thankfully we bought a vinyl copy at the time? So here it is.The line-up:Eddie Louiss - organ, piano, marimbaJohn Surman - baritone & soprano saxDaniel Humair - drumsNiels-Henning Oersted-Pedersen plays bass on track 2 onlyThe tracks:1. JOHN MAYALL - Ten Years Are Gone Vol. 1 (1973)
2007-11-10 01:34:00 Another John Mayall lost album (mysteries of the majors...). It was released as the last one of an albums' trilogy - featuring nearly the same personnel - that started in 1972 with Jazz Blues Fusion and continued with Moving On. Notable here - otherwise than in the other two items - is the presence of Sugarcane Harris on the violin. Ten Years Are Gone was a double-Lp outfit published also as two separated volumes: this is the Volume One, recorded in studio. Volume Two, a live recording, will follow sooner or later? The line-up:John Mayall - vocals, guitar, pianoFreddy Robinson - guitar, vocalsSugarcane Harris - violinBlue Mitchell - trumpetRed Holloway - sax, fluteVictor Gaskin - bassKeef Hartley - drumsThe tracks:1. THE ALAN SKIDMORE QUINTET - TCB (1970)
2007-11-09 01:12:00 A rare outfit from the classic age of the British jazz. Now out of print, we have seen that the used CD value is around 200$. So, we think it's better to give a chance to those not rich enough to reach it! The names of the musicians here seem like terms in the Seventies? British Progressive Jazz Encyclopedia. GRATEFUL DEAD - The Other Ones
2007-11-07 23:44:00 Well, we're not exactly deadheads, and we have problems with country music, but Greatful Dead deserve a special attention as unquestioned heroes of improvised music. But as it happens with King Crimson, the Net and the music world are full of Grateful Dead ? So, once more, sort of homage, we decided to work a bit, gathering 29 versions of one of our Dead favourites, the suite The Other One. We choose one performance per year from 1967 to 1995, picking from the boundless Dead live recordings catalogue and, of course, providing a new cover art for the whole thing. As usual for the band?s items, the result it?s a 4CD-set! Obviously, the tracks differ a lot in terms of musical interplay and sound quality.
