I know I'm picking a show that's spold out, but in the past that has proved to be a surmountable obstacle. It's a good thing too, because we could all use a little more good music in our lives. We need a soundtrack to the glorious spectacle that nature is putting on for us right now.

This marks the very first time I have picked Speakeasy for this post, which really is a result of my own ignorance of it's existance. No longer!Arkadelphia / The National Trust @ Speakeasy Admission: ? Be There: ?Local boys Arkadelphia are playing tonight, and they?re one of the better bands from our neck of the woods. These guys know how to rock, and they know how to bring it with the acoustic folkitude. Playin lead and hitting the mic with vox is Lee Bains, who may recognize from some of his solo shows about town.The National Trust are a Tuscaloosa trio with a great songwriting sensibility and pretty kickin? rock chops. Come on down and check it out.

Happy May!The Strife Rifle / The White Oaks / VASA / The Delicate Cutters @ WorkplayAdmission: 10$Go Time: 8:00 p.m.We certainly have been showered with a bounty of great concerts here in Birmingham lately. Today?s show isn?t as jam packed as last weeks Raindrop Festival, but the bands are some of the best locals to be found, and the charity (The Gopher Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer) is righteous. On top of all that, this is a pretty cheap ticket for Thursday night at Workplay, so it won?t break your wallet either.

Another movie night is upon us, and what a weird cult classic they've selected for us:Road House @ BottletreeAdmission: FREEGo Time: 8PMTo quote Bottletree's excellent intro:"Road House is one of those films you spend about two hours watching and never really understand what is happening but you're too entertained to care. It is about Dalton (Swayze), the greatest bouncer, who has come to a small road house to instill order. He cleans up the bar's poor crop of bouncers and manages to fall in love with the town doctor. All the while, pissing off the local crime boss. Monster trucks, tons of breasts, kung fu, and a blind guitarist later, you still don't have to think to be amused. All in all, Road House is the perfect movie to do just about anything too because it has everything a good time requires."There you have it. Have at it.

There's certainly a lot of variety in town today, what with Bottletree having a mini-fest. The two bands I really want to see are somewhere else, though:Dexateens / Teen Getwaway @ The NickAdmission: $7Zero Hour: 10 p.m.The Dexateens recently released a new album and they?re giving it away for FREE online! Go download you some of these rascals from Tuscaloosa, and then make it out to the show tonight, cause I?m sure they?ll be playing some of the new tracks. Life is good. Free is good.As if the Dexateens show wasn?t enough, they?ve been paired with another of my favorite local bands. Teen Getaway have played with most of the great local acts, but they don?t play a ton of shows, so you should definitely make the most of this opportunity to catch them.Honorable Mention: Amplifest II @ Bottletree

Get out to tonight's pick:Dan Wilson @ WorkplayAdmission: 15$Go Time: 8 p.m.Dan Wilson recorded his first solo album last year (with the help of Rick Rubin), but he already has a couple of Grammy?s under his belt. He wrote the hit song ?Closing Time? for the band Semisonic, and was also a big part of the songwriting team for The Dixie Chicks critically acclaimed album ?Taking the Long Way?. What?s nice about all this is that his music feels instantly familiar, though I haven?t heard it before.
