Los Campesinos!: Live at Cardiff Solus. April 10, 2008
2008-04-21 01:17:00
I'd usually start off with a review of the support band(s) but in this case I shall not. A search for a cherry pie put pay to most of 'Little My's set although they did look like a lot of fun, from what I saw. The less said about the next support band 'Lovvers' the better. They did seem to be a little stuck in 1992.Los Campesinos ! however, were absolutely everything I'd dreamed of, and more. They played everything I wanted them to, including a lovely rendition of Frontwards, a pavement song they are very nearly making their own. Returning to the venue where they'd played their first ever gig the band seemed in good spirits, or maybe it was just knowing they were to appear on Soccer AM at the weekend? (very funny watch)I'm going to see Vampire Weekend in less than 2 weeks. Vampire Weekend and Los Campesinos ! are undoubtedly responsible for my two favourite debut albums of 2008 (so far). Now I'll get to see how their live shows compete. From the hometown show Los Campesinos! ...

Record Review - M83 - New Music
2008-04-16 11:42:00
Artist: M83Album: Saturdays = YouthReleased: April 14, 2008Label: MuteI'm pretty sure I'm speaking for everyone here at facesinthesand when I say 'We love M83!' 'Before the Dawn Heals us' and 'Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts' are two of my all-time favourite albums. After the relatively disappointing 'Digital Shades', this is one hell of a return to form for Anthony Gonzalez. The songs are so beautiful on this album, it's still distinctively M83 but there's just something more to the structure and composition of the music. It really sounds great! Here's the first singleM83 - Couleursand the video for my favourite (and second single) Graveyard Girl can be found here on the brand new Pitchfork.tv website... get on over there it's great!and so are M83.

Record Review - Why? - New Music
2008-04-16 01:26:00
Artist: Why?Album: AlopeciaReleased: March 11, 2008Label: AnticonI was told to get this by a very special person and I have listened to it ever since. It's clearly one of the best albums of 2008 to date and lyrically, it is untouchable in it's glory. Just last week at the Los Campesinos show I attended in Cardiff (I'll get a review up soon I PROMISE) it was played over the PA prior to the show, I was loving it a lot more than the support band. This album is a fantastic mix of indie and hip-hop (more indie) and has something for just about anybody. Well played Mr Wolf. Why? - These Few Presidents'Even though I haven't seen you in years, yours is a funeral I'd fly to from anywhere.'I'm also loving 'Hollows' which you can find on their Myspace

Throw away your prejudices and get over there, there's some really good content. So here it is.. the video for Water Curses, see what you make of it. Record Review - Moby - New Music
2008-04-07 02:06:00
Artist: Moby Album: Last NightReleased: April 1st, 2008Label: MuteThis album is tight. This, to Moby at least, is the realisation of his dreams since the early 90's. However, with that being the case, it's not especially potent arriving in 2008. That's not to say it's not an incredibly good release. I've been listening to it pretty intensely over the last few weeks. This release is sure to marginalise Moby’s recent fans, but that was necessary unfortunately for Moby to treat his long-standing faithful to this masterpiece, that crams almost his entire career into one l.p.Well does it work? The answer of course is ‘yes’ and ‘no’. It’s not an album that flows from one glorious song to another. It is rather sketchy in how Moby jumps from one perspective to another. Can an album be criticised for trying too many things? Yes, I believe it can. The songs are great of course, individually. Personal highlights are '257.zero' 'Everyday It's 1989' 'I'm In Love' and 'Di...

Record Review - R.E.M. - New Music
2008-03-28 21:07:00
Artist: R.E.M.Album: AccelerateReleased: April 1, 2008Label: Warner BrosR.E.M. are back, BABY! Before I get my teeth into this one I'd like to direct you to their Live Lounge performance the other day. It shall be at the bottom of this here post. So we arrive at Accelerate, R.E.M.'s 14th studio album and it really is fantastic. Easily their best work in over a decade. With Irish producer, Jacknife Lee on board, they've finally managed to get their asses in gear. Overall this is a much more organised and focused effort than any of their other recent releases. R.E.M. may very well be over the hill, and I'm sure this album won't create the waves it would have done, if it had been released in say, 1994. However, if you're a hardcore fan, this is the album you have been waiting for for a long long time. And for that I salute you. YEAH!I'm not a big fan of R.E.M. I must admit that, but there's definitely tracks on this album that I dig. 'Supernatural Superserious', 'Houston' a...

Record Review - Cuty Copy - New Music
2008-03-28 20:50:00
Artist: Cut Copy Album: In Ghost ColoursReleased: April 14, 2008Label: Modular Record ingsTim Goldsworthy is quickly becoming a favourite name of mine. Firstly with Hercules and Love Affair and now here, with Cut Copy, his name is quickly becoming synonymous with the dance-punk genre.Cut Copy are an Australian band and this is the follow up to their well received debut release, 'Bright Like Neon Love'. I feel this should also garner a lot of praise as it's well, awesome. I really really like this and definitely reccomend you pick it up when it's released (already out in Australia, scheduled for an early April release in the States and the UK).Fusing everything that's good about dance-punk 'In Ghost Colours' is a big winner. It feels like The Rapture, just with less screeching and a much mellower approach to the vocals. It's still very dance-friendly with a punkish style to rival even some of LCD Soundsystem's material. Definitely a name to look out for in 2008, a popular brea...

Artist: GuillemotsAlbum: RedReleased: March 24, 2008Label: PolydorForget everything you thought you knew about Guillemots. This album is surprising, yes. Amazing, yes. Full out rocking, Hell Yea!I was worried about this album when I saw NME has smote it with a 4/10. Upon listening to the album I'm unbelievably confused. I know the NME is notorious for being wrong, and yes, I know the NME is infamous for trying to make a dramatic point. No, this isn't 'Through the Windowpane' but since when have any great band made the same album twice? I think it's wonderful and all I've got to say to the NME is Get Over It!!!That's not to say it's an album devoid of the epic beauty of Through the Windowpane. It's an album of wonderfully crafted pop songs, a lot more guitar than Through the Windowpane but these songs are still beautiful, one wonders if the NME even listened to 'Don't Look Down' or 'Take Me Home'. OK, It's not the album that Through The Windowpane was but it's tough t...

Record Review - Mystery Jets - New Music
2008-03-24 18:12:00
Artist: Mystery Jets Album: Twenty OneReleased: March 24, 2008Label: 679 Record ingsGood day today for British music.. with the aforementioned Foals (and soon to be mentioned Guillemots) albums released.Which brings me to the Mystery Jets. A band of so much promise finally delivering and delivering big. I want to desperately avoid the 'growing up' cliché as much as possible, you'll see it other places but not here. Instead what you get with Twenty One is a refined sound, the youthful energy is still there in every aspect. What has changed is the production, wonderfully done by the genius that is Erol Alkan and subsequently sounds so much better than their sometimes sketchy debut. It's a truely wonderful album, and sounds so great on my new speaker system. My personal favourite song is the sublime 'Flakes'. You can get a taste of it's brilliance here. Here's the video for the Young Love single featuring the wonderful Laura Marling (from whom big things I also expect):

Record Review - Foals - New Music
2008-03-23 20:48:00
Artist: Foals Album: AntidotesReleased: March 24, 2008Label: TransgressiveYes! Yes! Britain strikes back. It's about time we produced someone interesting and here we have something, in the shape of the debut album from Oxford's Foals. You could bemoan an absence of joy and the Hitler hair-cuts but why? this is math-rock after all people, it was never meant to be cool. The truth is these guys are extremely talented, they make extremely good songs and they're unorthodox to the extent that they should be celebrated for originality not tedium! It's an excellent album and really cements the hype created by some of their prior singles. The hype around this band is incredible, and I would not bet against a fall from their current popularity plinth. This band is clearly not for everyone but if you're a connoisseur of the interesting and different then this will be right up your street. Apologies for the promptness of such a post, or lack thereof... Was getting bitchslapped about by a presentation/essay/essay combo at the time you see... Nasty work.Further apology; if this post loses some steam, it's cos tea's on the horizon and i'm eager. Onwards. Festivities began as most feasts tend to in this day, with the Starter.Such support was provided by, "S.K.G", or Sebastian Konrad Gach as his MySpace enlightens.Charmed somewhat by the course of his set, he ousted some cheeky electrofried noises for the Bang-Bang Anglo-Saxons of the disco, trimmed finely with an array of thought-felt lyrics...S.K.G's clearly a virtuoso in his salad days, with surplus potential disgorging each time he thwacks the ivory. Chuck a production team behind him, and we'll see some very special somethings from him soon enough. Post-gig I bought a CD from him, an entity which has been getting a lot of love from those ears of mine ever since - and methinks you should also prick those...

Artist: Gnarls Barkley Album: The Odd CoupleReleased: May 18th, 2008 (online) May 25th, 2008 (In stores)Label: Downtown/AtlanticAfter leaking to the internet a couple weeks back, Cee-lo and Danger Mouse have decided to bring forward the release date to well, today. initially slated for a May release this is a great surprise in a week of great surprises. This really is a great disc, there isn't a mega-single as awesome as 'Crazy' but how could you ever hope to top that anyway? Instead, there are several fantastic songs that really stretch the perception you had of Gnarls Barkley. My personal favourite is the achingly beautiful 'who's gonna save my soul' which sees a far more mellow Danger Mouse just letting Cee-lo do his thing and boy, can that guy sing soul!Gnarls Barkley Who's Gonna Save My Soul (zshare)The first single is also very good. Record Review - Animal Collective - First Listen
2008-03-18 11:24:00
Artist: Animal CollectiveAlbum: Water CursesRelease: May 5th, 2008Label: DominoSo how do you follow an album like Strawberry Jam? Well Animal Collective simply went straight back in he studio to create this masterpiece. Be it only a 4-track e.p. it still retains magnificence. A more stripped down feel than their recent work, a return to their earlier days and also hints of Panda Bear's solo work shine through in the music.Opener 'Water Curses' is instantly a candidate for song of the year. Infusing that unique Animal Collective sound with elements of calypso and dance it's an instant winner. Streamable from hereNext up is 'Street Flash' which is near to seven minutes of Sung Tongs-esque meandering lyrics, shouting, strange electronics and pretty much everything else that is great about this band. The occasional scream (or is it a manic laugh) adorns this beautiful piece.'Cobwebs' is the third track and brings to the table the most quotable line on the E.P "I’m not going un...

Record Review - Hercules and Love Affair - New Music
2008-03-18 01:01:00
Artist: Hercules and Love AffairAlbum: Hercules and Love AffairReleased: March 10th, 2008Label: DFAIt's no surprise that Hercules and Love Affair are labelmates of LCD soundsystem. They have a wonderful new take on a rather old genre of music. Is this 2008's 'Sound of Silver' perhaps? Hercules and Love Affair are the brainchild of New York DJ, Andy Butler. The l.p also sees vocals from Antony Hegarty (of mercury prize winning Antony & the Johnsons fame) on 5 of the 10 tracks. The album is co-produced by Tim Goldsworthy of UNKLE and LCD Soundsystem fame.. and unsurprisingly sounds utterly fantastic. 2008 has been a mighty fine year so far, and with so much promise to come I couldn't be happier than I am at present. This is a must-buy album.. believe me. I know I say it a lot but WOW! this is an absolutely wonderful disc.Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (zshare)

2008-03-18 00:28:00
Artist: Crystal Castles Album: Crystal CastlesReleased: March 18, 2008Label: Last Gang Record sI was already aware of how freaking good these guys were live. Now the ultimate test has arrived. The debut album. Again, they pass the test but I wasn't as impressed. That's not to say there's something wrong with the songs. There isn't. Crystal Castles are born for the dancefloor, this 8-bit infectious dance noise is as wonderous as it is odd, I just don't feel it runs well as an album. It feels like a ramshackle of singles stuffed together for release. I really like each and everyone of these songs, there's just something that keeps it coming together. For those of you who love the mp3 this is a dream come true however. There's plenty of new (and very excellent) songs to be had. Crystal Castles themselves built themselves upon remixes of their contemporaries (see klaxons, liars, goodbooks etc.) and I wouldn't be surprised if their own work is wonderfully remixed by a whole heap of...

I should also note that January 22nd was only it's physical release, as it's been available for quite some time online.I have tickets to see these guys in May and damn am I excited. I think this is definitely my favourite record of the new year. It's just full of excellent, playful tracks, that give you little choice but to feel young and happy. As far as I can see it hasn't been particularly well received amongst critics, which is a mystery to me. This album is as spectacular as the name suggests. Record Review - Sh! The Octopus
2008-01-14 20:31:00
Artist: Sh! The Octopus Album: The Carrot ChaseReleased: July 17, 2007Label: Self ReleasedI got this disc through the post about 3 weeks ago. After several listens and a couple weeks deliberation, I laboured to the decision that this album is... Brilliant. Hailing out of Detroit, Sh! The Octopus pretty much incorporate all the successful dimensions of American pop. Frontman Randy Bishop has an individual voice, the sort that easily captivated me for the length of the record. There are many beautiful melodies throughout. However, these are really complimented by a very strong rhythm section, which somewhat steals the show. On my favourite track from the l.p. 'Apology', Christine Baxter provides some stunning backing vocals that really contrast well with Bishop's voice. Baxter provides keys and backing vocals through out and really is the completing piece of this puzzle.A delightful little record. Highlights for me are 'Apology', 'Flaking Friends' and 'My Kicks'their Myspace ta...

Record Review - Olivia Tremor Control
2008-01-13 07:14:00
Artist: Olivia Tremor Control Album: Music From The Unrealized Film Script: Dusk At Cubist CastleReleased: August 6, 1996Label: Flydaddy Record s The Olivia Tremor Control are a hugely under appreciated band. Their sound pleasantly reminds me of the 60's stylings of artists such as the Beach Boys. A time when pop music was about hummable melodies, rather than the watered down take on other genres as I hear today.. 'Rock-Lite', 'Soul-Lite'.. No thanks, I want the pure breed! That is exactly what we have here in this, the debut album by the Olivia Tremor Control. A hidden classic, a victim of the times, say what you will... I simply adore this disc!1) Jumping Fences 2) The Opera HouseIf you enjoy those you'll definitely enjoy 'Black Foliage: Animation Music', a 1999 release by the same band, try at it hereOlivia Tremor Control's Myspace

Unlucky for some. Apparently a fear of it is termed, 'triskaidekaphobia'...? Should really be using such time to revise for the impending examination-ruination-annihilations, or at best something other than bolting myself to the bed, immersed in the acoustic-womb that be, well, that created by such songs i guess?...Roll-forth.(1) "The Darkside Of The Sun" - Modeselektor [zShare]The MIDI-fuelled distich that be Modeselektor; InDaMu, glitch, electronica avec hippedy-hop... Such a tune.(2) "Last Night (Album Sampler)" - Moby [mp3]With 2008 set to be, The Return of the Vegan (Coldplay, Moby et al.) we can look forth with much merriment. I'll leave the full album-review (March '08, Mute Records) to the Duncan, for his reviews tend to be all the more goodly and relevant, as opposed to the wavering trivial batches of impertinence that mine tend to become... The single that shall soon commeth, "Alice"...

Recycling the 90's
2008-01-10 19:41:00
Whilst the 90’s was guilty of producing some absolute garbage, there’s a hell of a lot of good stuff to get excited about. I’ve gone back and dragged out some tunes from each year of the 90’s for you to listen to. This is just stuff I really like, some of it is popular, some not. Just take a listen!1990 – Sonic Youth – Dirty Boots1991 – My Bloody Valentine – Only Shallow1992 – R.E.M – Everybody Hurts 1993 – Magnetic Fields – In My Secret Place1994 – Pavement – Cut Your Hair1995 – Radiohead – Street Spirit (Fade Out)1996 – Olivia Tremor Control – Jumping Fences1997 – Grandaddy – Nonphenomenal Lineage1998 – Neutral Milk Hotel – In The Aeroplane Over The Sea1999 – Flaming Lips – Waitin’ For a SupermanHopefully that enlightened you somewhat to the inner workings of my mind. My personal favourite is the Beach Boys-esque melodies of Olivia Tremor Control.Have a good weekend!
