2008-03-26 19:53:00
You ever have one of these weekends where everything falls into place? That was my SXSW weekend. Can’t find a cab? Bus pulls up. Cabbie screws you over? Random electrician guy drives you across town. Great performances, great people, awesome weekend. In a weekend filled with top-notch performances, here are my top 10. 1. Ha Ha ...

Port O’Brien - All We Could Do Was Sing
2008-03-25 16:13:00
I suppose if you’re a musician, you draw inspiration from your day-to-day life. If you spend your hours as a barista at Starbucks, your music may be uninspired. I’m no musician, but if I were, I’d probably have some rockin’ tunes about cubicle decor or Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. The music of Port O’Brien, on the other hand, is inspired by long days and nights on a fishing vessel off of the coast of Alaska. I recently received a copy of their upcoming release, All We Could Do Was Sing , and every time I put on my headphones Port O’Brien takes me on a journey out to sea. I first fell in love with Port O’Brien after hearing The Wind and the Swell last year. They sounded like a traveling band of gypsies with a sound so loose it seemed their instruments may fall to pieces at any moment. The album wasn’t produced in a studio, the cover art shows two people in rain coats laying on a ship, the songs were mostly acoustic, and the vocals we...
SXSW 2008 Videos: The Felice Brothers
2008-03-24 15:49:00
Here are the first batch of videos from SxSW 2008 . We caught The Felice Brothers at Opal Divine’s on a small outdoor deck. Unfortunately the sun was setting behind the band, so I had trouble getting comfortable and couldn’t get a shot of the entire band without getting some serious glare (hence the shakiness). The ...

Guitar Hero Makes You Feel Like You Could Have Been Sweet At Guitar
2008-03-21 15:52:00
I finally played ?Guitar Hero III, Legends of Rock? a couple weeks ago for the first time. I?d heard all the buzz about it, and was really excited to play. I?m not ashamed to say it did not disappoint. I mean seriously, is there a better game to sit around with your buddies and drink ...

The Dexateens Give Away Album
2008-03-20 15:56:00

The Alabama outfit, The Dexateens, has made like Glossary and some band called Radiohead and decided to give away their new album, Lost and Found. One Track at a Time: Architecture in Helsinki - Heart It Races
2008-03-19 15:11:00
A few weeks ago we went through a phase where we mentioned Amy Winehouse like seven times. Okay. That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but with all the attention it got, it certainly felt like it. Regardless of Oz’s feelings toward her and her hygiene (or lack-thereof) it did give us an ...

Oh, and Thanks Austin!
2008-03-18 17:23:00
I’ll have a full SxSW recap in the next few days, but I just wanted to take a minute to thank the great city of Austin for a fantastic time. On Saturday night, I dragged three of my friends into Buffalo Billiards to see The Delta Spirit at Midnight. We all hit the wall about 6 ...
Thanks Bloodshot. Thanks Beer Nuts. Thanks Shirk.
2008-03-18 15:51:00
We’ll get back to the music soon enough (I’m sure some of you are tired of all the SXSW talk), but this is an important post. First, I’d like to thank Bloodshot Records for letting us be a part of their day party at Yard Dog. It was absolutely, without a doubt, the most well-attended ...

2008-03-17 05:22:00
Still in recovery from SXSW 2008 , but here are a few pictures from the ole point-and-shoot Olympus. The HearYa gang made a pact when we arrived to SXSW to make sure it felt like a vacation. That meant very little blogging during the week and very few pictures. We managed to get some decent ...

Sorry for the lack of activity?
2008-03-16 01:53:00
We’re running all over Austin at SXSW and not much time to handle the site.  We’ve seen great music and several F list celebrity sightings.  The Bachelor, Brad Womack, was at Chuggin’ Monkey and Matt Pinfield from the MTV glory days is in the room next to us.  We also saw Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite. Megafaun - Bury The Square, SXSW 2008
2008-03-08 04:07:00
I first heard “Lazy Suicide” by Megafaun and was immediately hooked. The song slowly builds with wonderful harmonies ala The Avett Brothers with just a hint of the sound that makes me love O’Death so much. The song slowly descends into a bizarre little jam full of unique instrumentation before easing back into the harmonies ...

The Whipsaws - 60 Watt Ave, SXSW 2008
2008-03-06 17:35:00
I was introduced to The Whipsaws by one of my favorite blogs, Nine Bullets. Normally I would leave well enough alone, as Nine Bullets does a great job, but I feel it’s my duty to spread the word about the Anchorage four-piece. They’ll be bouncing around at SXSW 2008 in March and deserve to ...
Say Hi - The Wishes and The Glitch, SXSW 2008
2008-03-05 23:06:00
I was raised listening to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. For some reason, I went through an odd phase in high school where I listened to 80’s music. It’s pretty much all I listened to for the entire year of 1992 (other than that Seattle grunge stuff) while living in ...

Howlin? Rain - Magnificent Fiend, SXSW 2008
2008-03-04 16:47:00
A couple of months ago, Drinking Buddy referred to Matt Pond’s latest release as a turkey sub from Subway. Well in keeping with that spirit, Magnificent Fiend by Howlin’ Rain is a mile-high corned-beef on rye with cole slaw and mustard dripping from the sides. This release is a sprawling classic that revels in everything ...
